Health Standards (OPHS). The OPHS establish requirements for fundamental public health programs and
services, which include assessment and surveillance, health promotion and policy development, disease and
injury prevention, and health protection. Using a population health approach that includes consideration of
priority populations, and collaboration with both health and non-health sector partners, the TBDHU strives to
meet the public health needs of the population, drawing upon and applying relevant research, evidence and
best practice within the local context to optimize the achievement of population health outcomes.
We are seeking Associate Medical Officer of Health, Aboriginal Health:
A Public Health and Preventive Medicine specialist licensed in the province of Ontario will be employed
by the Board of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit as an Associate Medical Officer of Health, to give
leadership and consulting expertise in developing models and programs for the delivery of Public Health
to First Nation communities/individuals of the Thunder Bay District and those under the Sioux Lookout
First Nation Health Authority. The AMOH, Aboriginal Health is a contract position, under the direction
of the Medical Officer of Health, fulfills the next phase in an ongoing Quadripartite First Nation Public
Health model development.
Requirements:
Education:
1.
Possession of a degree in medicine with a current license to practice from the College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and be in good standing with the CPSO.
2.
Further training in public health, with a fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada, preferably in Public Health and Preventive Medicine or Community Medicine
or a Master’s Degree in Public Health from a recognized university, in accordance with the Health
Protection and Promotion Act, and the Ontario Regulation 566.
3.
If a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada the FRCPC candidate must
be in good standing with the Royal College in all regards.
Eligibility:
The candidate must meet the requirements of the Health Protection and Promotion Act (1990) (HPPA)
S. 64: No person is eligible for appointment as a medical officer of health or an associate medical officer
of health unless,
(a)
He or she is a physician;
(b)
He or she possesses the qualifications and requirements prescribed by the regulations for the
position; and
(c)
The Minister approves of the proposed appointment, R.S.O. 1990, c H. 7, s. 64.
Hours of work: Full-Time Temporary, Immediately – to March 31, 2016 with possibility for extension
