WELCOME TO
BLOWING ROCK
Crown of the Blue Ridge
The 125-year-old village of Blowing Rock lies nestled in the Blue
Ridge Mountains at an elevation of 4,000 feet. Its simple charm
amid 6,000 square miles of majestic mountains and the valleys
they overshadow beckons visitors from all over the world. Even before its incorporation in 1889, the Village was a popular resort community of vacationers and seasonal residents seeking relief from
the heat of the lower elevations.
We invite you to visit us and experience the lively combination of
climate, activity and scenery that makes Blowing Rock a favorite
vacation spot time and time again.

“The Blowing Rock is the
only place in the world where
it snows upside down.”
-Ripley’s “Believe it Or Not”
THE LEGEND OF
THE BLOWING ROCK
North Carolina’s
Oldest Family Attraction
The town took its name from the Blowing Rock, an immense cliff
4000 feet above sea level, overhanging Johns River Gorge. The
legend of the Blowing Rock claims that a Chickasaw chieftain,
fearful of a white man’s admiration for his lovely daughter, journeyed far from the plains to bring her to The Blowing Rock and
the care of a squaw mother. One day the maiden, daydreaming on
the craggy cliff, spied a Cherokee brave wandering in the wilderness far below and playfully shot an arrow in his direction. The
flirtation worked because soon he appeared before her wigwam,
courted her with songs of his land and they became lovers, wandering the pathless woodlands and along the crystal streams.
One day a strange reddening of the sky brought the brave and the
maiden to The Blowing Rock. To him it was a sign of trouble commanding his return to his tribe in the plains. With the maiden’s
entreaties not leave, the brave, torn by the conflict of duty and
heart, leaped from The Rock into the wilderness far below. The
grief-stricken maiden prayed daily to the Great Spirit until one
evening with a reddening sky, a gust of wind blew her lover back
onto The Rock from the valley below. For people of other days, at
least, this was explanation enough for The Blowing Rock’s mysterious winds causing even the snow to fall upside down.
Come and experience the beauty
and mysterious winds for yourself.

Blowing Rock
OUTDOOR
ADVENTURE
From Waterfalls to Snowballs
Blowing Rock offers an array of exciting outdoor activities in one of
the most ecologically diverse and beautiful regions in North America. Tucked among the ridges of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing
Rock also enjoys the recreational and leisure opportunities that the
renowned park brings.
With access to countless hiking and horseback riding trails, the serenity of the mountains offers visitors an escape from city life. The Glen
Burney Trail, located in the heart of Blowing Rock, is a favorite among
locals and visitors alike. The trail, which was long used by native hunters and later as access to turn of the century logging camps, provides
breathtaking vistas of two substantial waterfalls.
The Moses Cone Carriage Trails on the Blue Ridge Parkway showcase
the luxury of nature in an easily accessible and relaxing way. They are
popular for horseback riding and easy hiking year round, as well as
cross-country skiing in winter. Notable trails in the 26-mile network include the Craftsman’s Trail, a 20-minute loop the Cones walked each
morning, and the Bass Lake Trail, which winds around the lake in a flat
loop and offers views of the Cone Manor House.
Fish in the area’s trout streams, canoe the lakes, or take a cave trip and
explore the intricate underground world of magnificent rock formations. Enjoy rock formations above ground, too, with local bouldering
fields and climbing areas. Get even higher off the ground at one of the
area’s newest outdoor attractions, High Gravity Adventures, an aerial
adventure park.
During the winter months, premier ski resorts offer skiers the area’s optimum slopes. For the beginning skier or the snowboarder, learn from
expert trainers who will teach you the latest tricks and techniques.

SHOPPING
in Blowing Rock
Is shopping your style? It is no secret that Blowing Rock has a reputation for its distinctive shops.
Southern Living magazine claims that Blowing Rock
“has the best shopping around.” Grab your girlfriends for a weekend trip, and take a stroll around
town to see what all the buzz is about.
Noteworthy shops include those found in the historic Martin House, built in the 1860’s, and the cluster at Southmarke, a collection of seasonal and
year-round boutiques. From antiques and pottery
to unique gifts, anyone is sure to find special mementos that capture the spirit of the Village.
Less than a mile from downtown you’ll find Tanger
Outlet Shoppes on the Parkway. Browse through 30
factory stores for top-of-the-line apparel and accessories at great outlet prices.
During the holidays, shop in Blowing Rock to get everything to go under your Christmas tree--and get
your tree, too! An old fashioned family tradition,
Christmas tree farms in our area offer shoppers the
finest fraser firs, wreaths and garlands. You can walk
right out on the farm, choose the one you want, and
they’ll cut it for you and tie it to your car.
According to Southern Living,
Blowing Rock has “the best shopping around.”

DINING
in Blowing Rock
The Local Experience
Blowing Rock has a history of attracting creative individuals,
and that goes for chefs and food purveyors as much as artists
and craftspeople. And when you dine in Blowing Rock, you can
enjoy the inventive flair of our culinary pros as they work with
the best of local foods. It might be a trend elsewhere, but it’s
just business as usual here. With so many amazing farms and
food producers in the High Country, it’s easy to see why.
For those who like to savor a bit of local flavor in a glass, the
Blowing Rock Ale House & Brewery is ready to welcome you. An
ever-changing, seasonal menu assures that you will have a deliciously local dining experience to accompany your libations.
Brewery tours are available nearly every day. They use local
ingredients in the brews, too, and have a creative line-up that
includes a cucumber Saison featuring green peppercorns from
the Blowing Rock Spice & Tea Exchange, and a stout made with
locally roasted coffee.
That coffee is roasted right on Main Street, where you can watch
the process and learn about the art of roasting. Camp Coffee
Roasters brings the behind-the-scenes action to the front of
the house, offering guests the opportunity to see, smell, and
hear the beans as they tumble in the roaster. Find coffee cupping events there as well as a full-service coffee and tea shop.
From the little things – like watching fudge made in-shop at
Kilwin’s – to the more extravagant – like Pork Loin from nearby Mountain Memories Farm served with a delicious jus and a
view at Gideon Ridge - we invite you to enjoy the local experience while dining in Blowing Rock.

Four Seasons
While there are great events and attractions to be found
any time you decide to visit Blowing Rock, you may want to
drop by and see us just for the seasonal ambiance. Every
season in the Blue Ridge holds special treasures just waiting to be featured in your favorite memories.
This little village starts the year off right with great local
skiing, snowboarding, and tubing under sweet Carolina
blue skies. In winter, the long distance views are even
longer and clearer in the cold air, so take your time and
enjoy the sights from the top of those snowy slopes!
When you come back down, warm firesides and mountain
hospitality await.
Spring brings a gentle warming with a pace that only the
mountains can offer, fi nishing in a riot of blooms. As
the snow and ice melt away, the valleys become greener
and the color creeps back up the hills in a daily, ever-changing show. Nearby wild and protected areas offer
sought-after sights for the nature-lover, from endangered
blooms to rare migratory birds. And the food! Our local
chefs love spring, and after tasting ultra-fresh seasonal
delights like wild ramps and morels foraged right from
the Blue Ridge, you will, too.
in Blowing Rock
Summer in the Blowing Rock area is truly an outdoor-lover’s paradise. Cooler summer temperatures make for more
refreshing adventures. Hiking, camping, climbing, ziplining,
kayaking, biking; you name it! Outdoor events abound as
well, from concerts to art shows.
Crisp air heralds the next season, as nature puts on the finery
of autumn. The slopes and varying elevations play a big part
in this show, offering a very long color season as the foliage
changes at higher peaks first. We track the color as it makes
its way to the valleys with our Daily Fall Photos online, but
this is one spectacle you’ll want to see for yourself. Find your
great escape in Blowing Rock. You’re welcome in any season!
During the holidays, Blowing Rock should certainly come
to mind for finding those perfect, one-of-a-kind gifts in
the village and the nearby outlets. While you’re here, make
your holiday tradition complete with a Choose & Cut experience. Visit a beautiful mountain farm, pick out your tree,
and have it cut and baled for you as you enjoy activities
like hayrides and visits with Santa. Make memories and
support a family tree farm!
