North Central Regional Library and Links to Literacy
Links to Literacy is the early literacy program that librarians throughout
the NCRL branches use in their weekly storytimes. Links to Literacy is
a program that teaches children the skills needed to begin to learn to
read. The branch librarians model book-sharing techniques for
parents during storytimes, so they can incorporate these ideas
into storytimes at home. Join us at your local community library
for stories, songs, rhymes and fun!
Early Literacy Skills that every child learns before reading:

• PRINT AWARENESS
• BOOK KNOWLEDGE AND APPRECIATION

Early Literacy Spotlight: ALPHABET RECOGNITION
ALPHABET RECOGNITION is simply those skills that help a child recognize that the symbols on a page
are individual letters and have a corresponding sound that goes with it. Recognizing letters is an essential
skill necessary for a child to be able to sound out and form whole words. One way to help children learn
the alphabet is to point out letters when you are reading to them, and there are no better books to do this
than fun and engaging alphabet books like
“B is for Babar”. Children also learn letters
by first recognizing different shapes. They
learn about shapes by manipulating blocks
or other toys and also by looking at books
that have interesting shapes. “Chowder”
is a fun book with distinctive shapes that the
