The Allnitelongers
First Last Sunday Starts the Year Off on a Great Note…
Another great night of folk entertainment was had by a small but enthusiastic audience at the
first Last Sunday concert for the year. Opening the evening, Ian Zierk had those present
listening carefully to his silky vocals and excellent guitar as he presented a great repertoire of
folk favourites and originals. An enthusiastic and entertaining performance from Jason
Baranski with Caroline and Grant followed. Rounding out the evening was the stellar
performance of Red Cat - beautiful guitar playing accompanied by tight and soaring
harmonies made for an excellent evening of musical entertainment.
On that note… The next Last Sunday gig features The Allnitelongers…
The Allnitelongers were formed in July 2009 by 3 musician friends who are long time fans of
Johnny Cash. Melbourne muso Don Gula ( double bass player) is one of the organizers of the
Newport(Victoria)Folk Festival, and it was suggested that they should do a Johnny Cash “Sun
Recordings” tribute for the Festival. They were all well aware that most of the Cash tributes
were not up to a standard of presenting the great man’s songs as they should be, just
“cashing” in on “Walk the Line”. With Mick Coates (vocals, acoustic guitar) and Oliver Dear
(Electric guitar and Fender Tweed amp) they had a very authentic replica of Johnny Cash &
The Tennessee Two, and got down to practising for the Festival.
The 3 guys had been playing some of the stuff in their own bands for many years, so the
sound and the feel was happening virtually from the start. The act at the Festival, held at the
Newport RSL, was so popular, that they are still playing that venue once or twice a month’ as
well as numerous hotel and bar gigs around Victoria. In the relatively short space of time
since, The Allnitelongers have widened their repertoire to include more material from the rest
of the Cash catalogue, encompassing the Sun days to the prison concerts and Rick Rubin’s
American albums. This has necessitated the band adding the services of a drummer, thus
replicating the Tennessee Three. They are flexible in being able to operate as a 3 or 4 piece.
BAND MEMBERS
Mick Coates has played nearly 100 gigs since 2006 as front man for Bendigo
based band UNWANTED MEN IN BLACK & A LADY. A Cowboy come Johnny Cash
outfit, they proved very popular with all ages at 20 or more Festivals around
Victoria, as well as the usual pub and private shows. Of all the singers who have
attempted to emulate the great man’s voice, you won’t hear anyone closer than
this guy. And he sings them all in the SAME key Johnny did himself, or lower,
because he CAN! This aint no boy soprano! He prides himself with playing at
every Guildford Banjo Jamboree since its inception six years ago.
Oliver Dear is the youngest member of the band at the tender age of just 18.
Apart from practicing his Luther Perkin’s boom-chicka, since purchasing his 1966
green Fender Mustang as a 14 yo, Oliver has been a mean mandolinist for his
father’s award winning Bluegrass band “Hardrive” since he “was just a little kid”.
So mean that he came in 3rd at the time honoured Galax (USA) Fiddler’s
Convention’s pick off in the under 21 section a few years ago out of 750
contestants! Also a devout Hank Williams fan, Oliver will sing a sprinkling of the
legend’s hits during the show, if he’s not feeling too shy! And if you need your
guitar fixed, he’s almost a qualified Luthier.
Don Gula must be the hardest working musician in the state of VIC, if not the
world. When not organizing festivals, or saving his local Newport RSL from
extinction, by promoting music there, he usually plays 7 days per week, and
somehow manages to be the music teacher for the local schools.
Truckstop Honeymoon
THEY'RE BACK! Mike West and Katie Euliss are heading back down under and will be touring
all over the place during the festival season. Your best chance to see them "up-close and
personal" is at their one and ONLY Geelong performance.
Just like last time Mike & Katie were in town back in 2008, they will be playing a house
concert to a select number of punters. Unfortunately Dani and I won't be able to host the
show this time around but die-hard fans and all round good-guys Justin & Sue Hartnett have
stepped up to the plate and have offered their place up for the gig. Great work Justin & Sue...
So the details are:
Monday 22nd March 2010
8pm-ish start. Tickets will be $25 with student $15.
The show will be in Highton, Geelong.
BYO Drinks and snacks. Also, BYO small
folding chair that'd be really helpful...
TICKETS: To book tickets for this show please
contact Justin or Sue at home on 5244 2081.
BE QUICK only about 30 tickets available!!!
Please support Mike & Katie and get along to the show. They are truly a sensationally
entertaining act with some of the best songwriting around. Feel free to email me if you'd like
to know what the last show was like (in short – amazing!) or if you need any more info.
Check 'em out www.truckstophoneymoon.com
Hope to see you there, I'll be the one in the front row!
Cheers Adam & Dani
Bluey by snail mail or eMail? That is
the question!
Many members now receive their issue of Bluey
via Adam’s emailing list. This does save on
postage and time.
Many still request their copy by snail mail as they
like the hard copy!
An advantage of the eBluey is that photos will be
in colour (currently B & W) and that you get the
issue as soon as it is edited.
If you wish to change to an eBluey could you
contact Adam on
[email protected] and he will set
it up for you to receive from his mailing list.

REVIEW OF OPEN MIC AT IRISH MURPHY’S
MURPHY S ON FEBRUARY NINE 2010.
It’s always good when the regular events of the year begin again after the disorganization of the
“Silly Season”. Apart from anything else, it’s a guide to knowing what day and week it is. At the Open
Mic one knows that it is a Tuesday and also the second Tuesday of the month. This saves always
having to check the calendar for guidance. Aside from this aspect, it’s always good value at the Open
Mic and a lot of fun and the opening one for this year was no exception.
The evening began with Paula on Vocals, Dwaine on Guitar
and Rob on Sax. First song was “Feelin’ Good”, followed by
“Take The ‘A’ Train”, “Bye, Bye Blackbird” and “Paper Moon”.
Dwaine’s walking Bass lines alternating with lead work and
Rob’s Sax solos gave a good backing to Paula’s Jazzy Vocals.
A good start!
Jill Meehan came on with Guitar next doing the Joni
Mitchell song: “River”. She then covered a song of Mike
Whittle’s: “She’s Gone Now” and this was done with great
feeling. For her final number – “Under The Boardwalk” – she
was joined by Paula on backing Vocals and Robert on Sax.
Jill Meehan feat. Paula and Rob
Ian Zierk was next with the Don McLean song: “Tapestry”
which was joined onto an environmental poem. Then a 1988
song about the “Rainbow Warrior” with an additional verse
by Ian himself. “Lovers And Strangers” was the piece that
then finished his set.
Mike Whittle started with the gambling song: “Jack ‘O
Diamonds” and then, in memory of Kate McGarrigle who had
died just recently, he did her “New York State”. His
concluding piece was his original “Annie Took Me Home”
which was listened to in attentive silence by those present.
Carolyne Coope with her pink capo
Jason – on Accordion – changed the tempo of things with
the Ross Wilson song: “Come Back Again”. He was then
joined by Shirley Parsons for two Everly Brothers numbers
which got everybody singing along. “Dream” was the first of
these and he finished with the lively “Walk Right Back” in
which everybody participated!
Claudia’s songs are always looked forward to and tonight she
gave good measure. First was a medley consisting of the Blusey
“My Boyfriend’s A Musician” leading into “Thank You For Being A
Bastard” and ending with the traditional farewell to such types:
“Shut That Door”. Another medley began with the immortal
“Bring Me A Bundy From The Bar” ( And someone did!) which
blended with “Sex With Me” and the ultra-solo “Musical
Masturbation” and ending with “You Look So Much Better When
I’m Drunk” (Talk about “Social Realism”!). Her final number was
“I’m Too Bloody Drunk” – a song to which many can relate!
A hard act to follow, but Carolyne Coope was the brave one
who did so and acquitted herself more than well. “Lighthouse”
was her opening number and then came “My Dog Don’t Like
You”. The bawdy classic “The Little Red Hen” was next – with
help from suitably-cued members of the audience – and she
finished with an instrumental version of “Yellow Bird”.
Ian Zierk strutting his stuff
Neil Nicholson – on Guitar and Vocals – began his set with the song made famous by “The Blues
Brothers”: “She Took The Katy”. Then came a medley of Celtic Instrumentals using a lot of slide and
which included “Dunmore Lassies” and “Drowsy Maggie”. His last song was about four drunken mates
and this was interspersed with many Celtic melodies and got a good response from those present.
REVIEW OF OPEN MIC AT IRISH MURPHY’S
MURPHY S ON FEBRUARY NINE 2010…
2010 continued…
continued
The final act for the evening was Adam Parsons and “The Shanghai Times” – his band – with
Darren and Steve and instrumentation of two Guitars, Bass and Drums. “The Stars Are Out Tonight”
was their opening number which featured a lot of good harmonies and incredible counterpoint between
the two Guitars. “Thirty Years” came next and their final song was “Criminal”. A lively ending to a very
lively night!
Once again, many thanks to Mark and Ade for their work on Sound,
Paula for her M.C. work, the management and staff of Irish Murphy’s
and especially YOU – the audience – whose support for those
performing make it all worthwhile and fun!
Don’t forget the next Open Mic of March Nine and the “Last Sunday”
concerts of every month.
Meanwhile,
Until Then,
“Happy Listening”.
Peter A.D. Fogarty.
Banjo and Bluegrass Workshops to Start Again in March!
Late last year a number of banjo (and bluegrass)
workshops were held at Irish Murphy’s on the third
Sunday afternoon of the month. These workshops,
hosted by banjo players Mark Wardle and Peter
Somerville have been enjoyed by a good number of
participants. With an emphasis on informality and a
supportive learning environment these workshops
have helped along the skills of the players involved.
With the added support of a dedicated web site,
players can hone their skills between workshops at a
pace to suit themselves.
Peter Somerville
A new series of workshops is planned for the next
few months starting on Sunday March 21st. If
you are interested in joining in, contact Mark
Wardle via email [email protected] .
Workshops run from 3:00pm to 5:00 pm Sunday
afternoons and cost $30 per participant. Whilst the
emphasis is on 5 string banjo, instruction can be
provided on most bluegrass instruments including
guitar, mandolin, bass and dobro.
Mark Wardle
Hope to see you there!
