Making Our Love and Mission Visible
Lighting Up January
Christmas now is past. Spring seems so far off. But the days are slowly growing longer
now. One way to lighten up dark days is to create time for friends and a time to enjoy an
interest that brings pleasure to life. Your church family can help lighten up dark days of
winter. We are exploring the establishment of several new small groups. Many interests are
addressed. Curious and interested in learning something new with fun people? You can join
with a group of people who have similar passions and interests.
1. Learn about brain fitness: Explore games and fun strategies to stimulate your brain
into the future.
2. Want to make better use of that digital camera sitting on the back shelf of your
closet? There is a group joining together to take better pictures.
3. Is there a book somewhere inside of you? We will have a small group of writers
led by novelist Angelia Schultz. Check out her novel, The Nameless, for eBooks on
Amazon!
4. What’s it like to travel around the Holy Land and see the places Jesus walked? Yes,
we have a group for that!

Do you want to feel the satisfaction of making a difference in the life
of another through service? Become part of the Men in Mission
group for men and teens.
Want to find peace and meaning in life? There will be a small group
on spiritual life and growth.
A great way to bring sunshine into January is Mediterranean
Cooking. This group will come together for potluck meals and then
watch cooking videos made at The Culinary Institute of America
from Napa Valley, California.
High quality videos will be used with the spirituality group, the
photography group, the brain fitness group, and the Mediterranean
cooking group. Yes, we want these groups to be of a high quality but the
best part of all will be the people gathered together. Sign-up sheets are
available at church. Groups will typically run through May although some
may want to continue for a longer period of time.
Will we end up having all of these groups? It depends on people
signing up. It’s important to let us know your interest and days and
schedule to be a part of one or more of these groups. So indicate your
interest and bring along a friend or two. As you invite friends you become
part of the sunshine in the dark days of January.

2015-2016 Registration
We are accepting registrations for the
2015-2016 school year. I will be at a table
in the fellowship hall on Sunday, January
25th, between services, to accept
registrations from Good Shepherd
Maggie Bruns, Director/Teacher
Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe
our school year is half over already!
We started out December by making
little preschool elves, angels, light
bulbs, and much more Christmas art.
We had an advent calendar in our
classroom that helped us to
understand the story of Jesus' birth
along with books, songs, and a Nativity
scene. After spending a few weeks
practicing our Christmas songs we had
a concert for our friends and family.
The children did an amazing job and
everyone seemed to have a great
time. We had a visit from Santa Claus
where the children received a special
present. They were very excited!

Thank you!!
Thank you to everyone who helped to make “The Christmas Check List” Program a wonderful experience for
both the youth and the congregation. It was really great to “check” things off the list as we get ready for Christmas. It was an amazing day and a beautiful sight to see all of the kids smiling and singing their hearts out. Thank
you to all of the Sunday and Wednesday School Teachers: Jill Vining, Emma Getty, Ann Langbehn, Heather
Scheidt, Mia Bergan, Jean Black, Patricia Kendall, Chris and Connie Getty, Lisa Anderson, Lori Tiede, Sarah Black,
Becky Sudenga, Morgan Johnson, Karla Mehlhoff, Sydna Odland, Amy Nilson, Christen Salfrank, Amy Wright,
Hope Metzger, and Nancy Rall for all your help with this program!
Also, I would like to say a special thank you to Gina Malchow and Alicia Peterson for their leadership with the
music for the program and the entire year! We couldn’t do this without you. Also, thank you to Helen Heuer for
her beautiful piano playing during the service. It was wonderful!
The Youth Team and I would like to thank the entire congregation for all that you have done and continue to do
to support our youth! It is a wonderful thing to see.
Blessings!!

Und ein Gutes Neues Jahr! (my German is rusty, but not the wish for 2015!!)
As we celebrate the wonders of God with us and of a year ahead in which God can lead us
together to be his people, we sense a clear call to work together as his people in Good Shepherd
church. There has been quiet planning and prayerful hoping that we can strengthen and increase
our growing youth and family life. Over the past year, Pastor Liz has carried the major role with
helpers to grow our youth Church Schools programs. For 3 years we have remembered the
action of the annual meeting in which the request was made that the position of Youth Ministry be
filled with a regular staff member. We are indebted to Pastor Liz for building that program along
with all of her additional pastoral duties and in 2015 the congregation is now being challenged to
support a Youth & Family Ministries Coordinator.
This step should allow several things to develop in our family-focused congregation. First,
the careful and steady guidance of our twice-weekly Christian Education programs on Sunday
morning and Wednesday evenings will be solidly led by an administrator who will support the host
of volunteer leaders we are so fortunate to have. Second, the time for close ties between Pastor
Liz and her Youth TEAM and our high school youth can be deepened because much background
work will be done by the Youth & Family Coordinator. Third, reaching out to and relating to many
parents who want their children to have a vital faith, but have often been only marginally involved
in church, offer a serious ministry of Good Shepherd Church.
Ours is a time when parents and children live very busy lives. The church and the faith
journey can be an important part of those busy lives IF WE CARE ENOUGH TO SEEK AND
LISTEN TO THEIR NEEDS. If family crises and turmoil, when they happen, can be balanced with
growing faith shared among our people, we can see satisfying and wonderful days ahead. We
enter 2015 in solid financial condition, a mortgage under control, a physical plant that is attractive
and inviting, some reserve funds, and a spirit of friendly warmth among most folks in the
congregation. NOW IS THE TIME to pray and plan together for a new chapter in our life as God’s
folks here. The 2015 budget will ask us all to consider our current support for the ministries of
Good Shepherd and to commit a bit more if we can in order to grow our Youth & Family program.
This is a valuable core ministry and if every family will help just a bit, we can see an exciting new
chapter in the faith life of Good Shepherd develop. Will YOU join in this serious step forward for
our church? Sunday, January 11 a discussion will be offered between services about the new
Youth and Family Ministry program. Join us, won’t you?

Annual Meeting: January 18, 2015
PAGE 5
Don’t miss this year’s annual meeting as we launch the direction of the church for the year
to come. We are very excited to present plans for a much extended Youth and Family
Ministry program for 2015. Ministry opportunities will be expanded to all ages. We will also
provide inspiration and resources for faith to be shared in our homes and our church.
We are proposing hiring a person who will lay the foundation for ministry that will
be implemented by our pastors, volunteers, and within our families. This person will be the
Good Shepherd Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator. We are eager and ready to grow in
loving God through faith sharing that takes place in our own homes. The time is now to build
relationships and friendships in our congregation as people bond together around our
shared love of God. New youth groups are being planned for elementary aged children and
their families and even a plan to engage teens and their families in the last two years of high
school in faith formation. As we’ve moved from one to two pastors the ministry events of
Good Shepherd have grown. Now we at the start of expanding these ministries even more.
We have big dreams as we grow in loving God.

Why do handbell ringers wear gloves when playing bells?
What is used on the bell tables to protect the bells from
damage and to keep them from rolling off the table?
How is the volume adjusted on the bells? (besides ringing with
stronger force & motion)
Who made (sewed) the first black corduroy covers for the bell
tables in the sanctuary? (They were replaced four years
ago, and now are used for rehearsals in the Bell Room.)
How do ringers know which side of the bell to pick up? Does it
matter?
Over the last twenty years, what Good Shepherd “family” has
had the most members in our various bell choirs?
(answers on Page 9)
Getting the Big Picture: Taking in the World
Sharing the love of God around the world is an active and exciting process in the
church. Would you like to be involved? You can be a Mission Interpreter. You will be in
direct communication with the ministry of mission to the world. Mission interpreters
will be informed and in communication with what is going on in global mission and will
be entrusted to share these exciting stories with the congregation as we in our church
cross boundaries. On January 17 at Good Shepherd the South Dakota Synod will gather
mission interpreters together from area churches at Good Shepherd. This gather begins
at 10:00am and ends around noon. This is a significant opportunity for those who are
excited for the power of faith and the love of God to bring people together from all
over the world.

Wednesday Meals
No Wednesday School on December 17, but kids started showing up at church
anyway. “What’s for supper?” So we went into the kitchen to see for ourselves. There
were the makings for a salad. There was an unopened package of French fries in the
freezer. Pastor Liz took off to get hotdogs and buns. Pastor Tim went into the kitchen
to make supper with kids. They got right to work. Paige Haugen and Kaitlyn started
up the oven and began the process for French fries. A pot of water was put on for the hot dogs. The kids
opened the package of greens and mixed in purple cabbage and shredded carrots. Leftovers were pulled
out from the previous Sunday’s Angel Brunch. We attempted to mix up drinks which didn’t turn out just
right. There was a little too much water compared to the mix. The meal wasn’t perfect, but the kids
dug into it with enthusiasm. We even did the clean up by hand without the dishwasher, because we had
forgotten to warm the water. Haylee Mork arrived after the clean up had begun and got a yummy supper
of French fries and potato chips! But she cheerfully ate that supper as well. When all was said, done and
eaten, it was a God sighting.
Wednesday meals start up again on January 14 when Wednesday School, Confirmation, and
Wednesday worship resume. Come and be a part of it. We begin the preparation of food around 3:00pm
to be ready to serve by 4:45-6:00pm. Clean up begins soon after the first dishes are brought back to the
counter. We invite you to join us for the meal. You are welcome to help with the preparation and with
the clean up. Donations are accepted. The recommended amount is $2.00, but no one is turned away.
Music
at Good Shepherd
Curt Eisenbeisz and Susan Landon-Arnold have retired and are enjoying a time of travel and
adventure. They have been a huge gift to this church in developing a first-class praise band. On Sunday,
January 18 bring a card of gratitude for the contribution that Curt Eisenbeisz has made in leadership of the
Praise Band and thanks to Susan Landon-Arnold for her participation and support in the band. We’ll gather
those cards up and send them to them. In the meantime, we are encouraging new leadership and support
for the important praise band ministry in our church.
Also, we are pleased to welcome a new music coordinator, Rachel Hemke, to the staff of Good
Shepherd. Rachel takes over from Nancy Ohnstad who did so much to encourage participation in music in
our worship during her time as our coordinator. Rachel is also committed to bring people into the
worship setting to share their musical gifts.
Beginning in January we will recognize a different music person or group per week who add life to
the worship at Good Shepherd. This recognition will take place on Sunday mornings in in words of
appreciation, in the bulletin and in the prayers.
New Member Sunday, January 18
We will welcome new members into our community on Sunday, January 18.
This will be a special day in which we have our Annual meeting that launches us
in our direction for a new year. We will have a New Member Orientation on
Saturday morning, January 10, from 9:00 to 11:30. If you are interested in
membership or know of someone else who is please give Pastor Liz or Pastor
Tim a call.

Urgent!
The Time is Now to Sign Up for the St. Dysmas Trip
What a great experience it is to travel twice a year to St. Dysmas Prison Ministry at
the South Dakota Penitentiary. We will leave around 12:15 on Thursday, January 22 and
drive to Sioux Falls. Arriving at Sioux Falls we go out to eat together and enjoy the meal
and fellowship. We each pay for our own meal. Then we go to the South Dakota Penitentiary and to worship with the St. Dysmas Prison Congregation. There are strict rules
governing our safety while we are there and the Pastor Marlin, when he was there, would
always tell groups arriving that they were safer there than out on the street. After we leave
there remain strict rules that limit communication between prisoners and visitors as well.
It’s traditional on the way home to stop for pie in Watertown and to further enjoy the time that we have
together. We arrive late back in Aberdeen, sometime around midnight to 1:00am. Yes, this is a full day but one
that will touch you and you will never forget.
Before we go, we need to be cleared to enter the facility through paperwork that is filled out a couple of
weeks before hand. This requires planning ahead. You can’t simply go at the last minute. Of course it happens
sometimes that people fill out the paper work and have something come up that makes it impossible for them to
go.
This is truly a trip in which we cross boundaries to experience and share our love of God.
Crossing Boundaries Sunday
The love of God leads us to cross boundaries. Christ goes ahead of us and walking with Christ we
come to places we’ve never been and meet people who we otherwise would never have met. Already in
this newsletter are stories and opportunities for us to cross boundaries for Global Mission through the Mission Interpreters and the St. Dysmas Prison trip. On Sunday, January 25, we read of how Jesus crossed
boundaries as he went from his baptism near Jerusalem. Jesus traveled north into Galilee and began to
call his disciples. How far can we go? This Sunday we will have guests in the church from CMA, the Christian Motorcycle Association. Bruce “Moses” Greenhalgh will tell us stories of how this organization crosses
borders throughout the world to reach a group of people, some of whom are unlikely to darken the door
of a church without an invitation. Good Shepherd members Bruce and Mona Greenhalgh and Dale Powers
are part of CMA in Aberdeen and would like to welcome others of you into this organization on the move
for the love of Jesus Christ.
MISSION OF THE MONTH
Individuals, couples, are you looking for a volunteer opportunity
at Good Shepherd? Consider joining the Altar Guild—yes, men
can join! We train you and we always work as a team so you
won't have to work alone. We generally sign up for one month
during the year, but you can volunteer throughout the year
whenever you have time.
Our job consists primarily of filling the altar candles, preparing
communion, changing paraments when needed, and dusting
and vacuuming the altar.
If you are interested in finding out more about Altar Guild, call
Sandy Cahoy at 228-9092, or any of the other members, or stop
in at our meeting the 3rd Sunday of each month at 9:40 a.m. in
the church library.
The Mission of the Month offering is received on
the 2nd and 4th Sunday and Wednesday with
our “Noisy Offering” by passing the bread pans.
In December, $333.44 was donated to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.

Answers-Bell Facts & Trivia
1. It's because the perspiration from your hands has acids
in it that tarnish and eat away at the brass of the bells.
In order to keep them shiny and sounding good, bell
ringers should wear gloves at all times when handling
them.
2. Dense foam. It needs to be a minimum of two inches
thick. All of our tables have foam that is four inches
high and covers the entire table.
3. Our Malmark bells have adjustable clappers that each
have three different settings: Soft, Medium, & Hard.
4. Sharon Bossert and her mother, the late Ruth Magagna,
sewed them.
