06 Solution
Sandvik Hard Materials is committed to
continuously providing solutions for the
can making industry. These solutions are
based on outstanding can tools that help
our customers improve productivity.
As a full solutions supplier, it is important for us to understand both the
customer production process and their
challenges. This allows us to provide
service personalized to fit the customer’s unique needs, such as tooling,
engineering services or consulting.
01 Challenge
Can production is a sophisticated
process that depends on the combined
performance of coils, lubricants, tools,
machines and even sensors. The malfunction of any one of these items will
result in a total stoppage of the line.

03 Idea
04 Design
With Sandvik’s expertise in can
design, engineering, support and
troubleshooting, we can help the
customer bring their idea to reality.
Involve us at an early stage to get
the best result.
Sandvik Hard Materials can tooling gives
the customer the opportunity to implement
a unique design. Our tooling allows the
customer to specify the dimensions of the
body, the cup, the necking die and metal
blanking specification. With us, design goes
hand in hand with optimized plant performance.
By utilizing our research and development, we can give canmakers the optimum material grade for their specific
production applications. Each design
may require a very specific grade. Our
ongoing material development programs focus on providing manufacturers
with superior products of consistent
quality in different grades to perfectly
suit the application.
Engineered Can Tool Solutions
Sandvik is its own raw material developer and manufacturer, which is an advantage
for the customer, in terms of costs and reliability. Cemented carbide is one of the most
successful composite engineering materials ever produced. Its unique combination of
strength, hardness and toughness satisfies the most demanding applications. The most
valuable property of cemented carbide is that it offers a safer and more dependable solution than any other known material to one of the toughest problems which engineers
have to contend with - reliability.
Our ongoing material development programs at Sandvik Research and Development
focus on providing manufactures with superior products of uniform quality in different
grades to perfect suit the application.

Recycling and sustainability
Environmental consideration is a key element in all our operations. We always strive to
prevent or minimize harmful effects of our operations on the environment. The Sandvik Hard Materials Recycling Concept is a service intended to make it easy and effective
to recycle used tooling in a properly managed and in an environmentally suitable way.
A principal aim is to increase the amount of carbide being recycled, thus reducing the
demand for non renewable resources.
Sandvik maintains full control over the complete recycling process. This ensures that we
maintain our high product quality, whether the material is of virgin or recycled sources.
Certified Recycling Process
Sandvik’s core strengths in cemented carbide materials technology and development,
and fully integrated manufacturing processes, reinforce a global leadership position by
providing engineering solutions to the can maker industry.
Our commitment of early involvement in new product development programs allow
Sandvik customers to leverage our core strengths ensuring the highest level of technical, engineering, design and manufacturing support. Benefits to our customers include
a reduction in new product “time to market”, cycle time, lower overall product costs,
improved productivity and increased profitability.
Sandvik invites you to take advantage of our core strengths. Involve us as early in new
product development projects from design stage to end support and recycling, to offer
you a full solution.
All our metallurgical processes are rigorously controlled, from the raw material to the
finished product. We are, of course, quality certified in accordance with the ISO 9001,
ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 norms.

Body Maker
Canmakers have very different criteria when changing their tools. Some change tooling after the manufacture of a certain number of cans and others only change tooling when the cans produced are no longer meeting specifications. Regardless of how
you determine when to change your tooling, production will stop while making the
change. Improved bodymaker, cupper press and necking tooling design can help reduce tooling costs and allow you to operate at higher speeds.
Many canmakers regard the bodymaker as key to the performance of the finished can,
which is why Sandvik Hard Materials supplies the full range of bodymaker tools.
Sandvik Hard Materials has a proven track record as a key global supplier of cemented
carbide and steel tooling for the manufacture of 2 piece beverage cans. We offer tooling in both steel and cemented carbide, giving you the ability to source your total
requirements from one supplier and partner, Sandvik.

Premium Grades for Punch Sleeves
DZ10
Offers outstanding performance
compared to standard grades
Advantages offered by DZ10 compared to conventional grades to produce both aluminum and steel cans:
• Longer production life between repolishing/cross-hatching.
• Longer production life between regrinds.
• More regrinds are possible as less material needs to be removed.
• Total Punch production life up on conventional grades by as much as 3 times.
• Punch maintains its surface finished throughout the production cycle.
• Less stripping problems.
• Less wear as a result of enhanced abrasion and corrosion resistance giving.
DZ18
Lightweight cemented carbide
grade for Can Tooling
Advantages offered by DZ18:
• 15% lightweight punch reduces bodymaker ram drop and improves tool pack alignment*.
• Improved sliding properties facilitates stripping of the can and reduced tear off rate.
• Longer production life between repolishing, crosshatching and regrinds
• More regrinds are possible as less material needs to be removed.
• Total punch production life higher than conventional grades by as much as 3 times.
• Punch maintains its surface finish throughout the production cycle.
*new bodymaker set up to be considered when changing from conventional to lightweight grade. For example,
this grade provides 0.6kg weight reduction in 33 cl punches.

Manufacturing process
from cemented carbide
When creating a tooling solution for 2 piece cans, the tooling specifications must to be
clearly defined. By utilizing our knowledge in powder metallurgy, we can give canmakers the optimum material grade for their specific production applications. Each design
may require a very specific grade. Our ongoing material development programs focus
on providing manufacturers with superior products of consistent quality in different
grades to perfectly suit the application.
All our metallurgical processes are rigurously controlled, from the raw material to the
finished product. We are, of course, quality certified in accordance with:
• ISO 9001: Quality Assurance
• ISO 14001: Environmental
• OHSAS 18001: Health & Safety
The processes also undergo continuous development in order to improve existing procedures and create new ones to achieve specific material compositions, design, production
and machining techniques as well as solving particular application trouble-shootings.
