Retirement Living
With an “anything is possible” philosophy and
a friendly staff that goes the extra mile to help
new residents feel right at home, The Mayflower
strives to make the transition to retirement living
seamless and stress-free.
W
hen it comes to retiring at
The Mayflower, “one size fits
all” is simply not in the lexicon.
On the contrary, Mayflower
residents enjoy
the freedom
to personalize
their apartments
and villas with
upgrades and
customizations
that make each
living space
truly unique.
The Mayflower’s

is to provide
residents with as seamless a
transition into their new home
as possible,” says Jana Ricci,
director of marketing. “We work
hard to accommodate individual
needs and preferences – even if
it means knocking down walls
and reconfiguring space.”
Along those lines, The
Mayflower staff has overseen
a long list of modifications to
existing residences, including
installing fireplaces, total
kitchen renovations, putting
down hardwood floors,
adding a yoga studio and even
combining two apartments
into one. “If it’s feasible from a
construction standpoint, we
do it,” Ricci adds.
Phil and Diane Reece worked closely with Mayflower staff to combine two
one-bedroom apartments into a larger living space that accommodated their
specific needs. Diane, an interior designer, drew up the plans herself. Below,
at left, are the finished living room and dining area.
Creating Their Own Space
Phil and Diane Reece can
attest to that. When the time
came to start a new chapter of
their lives at The Mayflower,
it was important to find a
spacious apartment that could
be modified to fit their needs.
Working with renovation and
design teams suggested by The
Mayflower, the Reeces set about
combining two one-bedroom
apartments to create a custom,
1,600-square-foot living space
that features top-of-the-line
fixtures and a wonderful view
of Lake Bradford.
“We just said what we
wanted and The Mayflower
made it happen,” Diane says.
“It feels like home, because all
of my favorite things are there.”
The process began when
Diane, an interior designer,
gave The Mayflower design plans
she drew up with help from local
interior designer Mark Rash.
She and Phil selected features
like hardwood flooring, crown
molding, thick-panel 36-inch doors
and frameless glass for the shower.
They picked out appliances, chose
paint colors, set aside ample
storage space and added an extra
touch of personality by including
a built-in Murphy bed.
From there, The Mayflower
staff went about meeting the
Reeces’ every expectation,
walking them through each step
of the renovation. “We moved
out of a large house, and we were
accustomed to doing a lot of work
to maintain it,” Phil says. “Now,
The Mayflower handles all those
things for us. They’ll even hang a
picture on the wall, change a light
bulb and deliver food to our room.
We’ve found that The Mayflower
really delivers on all the services
we might need.”

Community Engagement
From teaching fitness classes … to helping children with developmental disabilities … to volunteering
at Winter Park Memorial Hospital, Mayflower residents and staff are changing lives by giving back.
Students + Seniors = Win-Win
Jane Lapple had lived at The Mayflower
only a short time before her outgoing
personality caught the imagination of
marketing director Jana Ricci. With Jane’s
penchant for serving others and her 30-year
career in elementary education, she was a
natural fit to volunteer with children.
At Jana’s urging, Jane soon joined the
nationally recognized “OASIS CATCH
Healthy Habits” program, sponsored locally
by Rollins College and the Winter Park
Health Foundation. The outreach connects
teams of adults 50-plus with kids in grades
K-5 to provide a healthy snack, teach a lesson
on nutrition and lead children in 30 minutes
of fun, non-competitive exercise.
“I’m a social being by nature, and Jana
picked up on that very quickly,” Jane says.
“She helped me find an opportunity to
volunteer and give back. When she called
and said, ‘I found something I think you’ll
like,’ I knew right away it was a good match.
That’s the kind of personal approach that
makes The Mayflower so special.”
Once a week during the school year, Jane
leads a group of OASIS volunteers at nearby
Brookshire Elementary School, where they
interact with students in afterschool care.
Part of the program for the past two years,
she appreciates the opportunity to work
with children again.
It’s nice to know I am helping other children
through my involvement with the Center.”
By spreading community awareness,
planning fundraisers and sending letters to
state representatives, Cheryl helps the Center
extend its outreach to Orange, Seminole
and Brevard counties. And she has the full
backing of The Mayflower.
Touching Lives
“I love the whole concept of pairing
elementary school students with seniors,”
Jane says. “We learn from one another.
The kids come in with smiling faces, excited
about what they’re going to do that day.
And, of course, volunteering at school helps
the seniors stay vibrant and connected
with the young people in their community.
It’s a win-win.”

Giving Back
For Mayflower CFO Cheryl Lane, it’s
important to lead a life of service. As such,
she is a longtime member of the Community
Leadership Council for the Howard Phillips
Center for Children & Families, a local
nonprofit that provides dignity and healing
for children, families and individuals who
face overwhelming challenges like child
abuse, sexual trauma, developmental
disabilities and lack of access to medical care.
“Knowing that I’m doing something for
people who are underserved, especially on
the medical side – that’s rewarding,” says
Cheryl, who handles much of the Center’s
financial duties. “I feel like I’m paying back
what was given to me.”
“It is important for us as parents to be an
advocate for our children, especially those
who have been abused or that face medical
issues that none of us have had to encounter
in our lives,” she adds. “As a parent of two
boys, I have had to face some of those issues
and challenges and know how hard that can
be. The Howard Phillips Center gives children
and families the resources to work through
these difficult times and provides the support
needed to work through these challenges.
prayer and emotional support to patients,
families and loved ones in need.
“I just wanted to give of myself,” Pauline
says. “I’m a people person, and it gave me
great pleasure to volunteer. It was such
a wonderful experience.”
After a lifetime of working in a hospital,
Pauline especially appreciates how The
Mayflower is committed to offering the best
possible long-term care services. “The staff

couldn’t be better,” she says. “The nurses and
Dr. Lopez are marvelous, and everything I
need is right here. I couldn’t be happier.”
When it comes to helping those
in need, few people can match the
longevity of Mayflower resident
Pauline McEuen Kellam, who
volunteered at Winter Park Memorial
Hospital from 1968 to 2014.
During that time, her duties spanned
a wide range of responsibilities – from
working in the pharmacy to overseeing
400-plus volunteers as president of the
auxiliary in the mid-1990s. She recalls
staying overnight at the hospital
during Hurricane Charley in 2004
and serving hamburgers to doctors
in the late 1960s using a brand-new
appliance – the microwave.

Two new, state-of-the-art vehicles – including a 23-seat shuttle bus –
take The Mayflower out into the community in more ways than one.
Wrapped in iconic Mayflower
photography, the community’s
new shuttle bus provides luxury
transportation for a variety of
excursions. Above (front to back),
residents Rae DelFosse, Judy Mamos,
Tom Savino, Aggie Koster and
Bob Pittman travel in comfort,
while enjoying amenities such as a
mini-bar and two movie monitors.
Another Mayflower resident instrumental
at Winter Park Memorial Hospital is Sylvia
Reaves, a retired nurse who has volunteered
for the past eight years in the neonatal
intensive care unit and mother/baby
department.
Once a week, Sylvia administers statemandated hearing tests for newborns – an
average of seven or eight per day. Helping all
those precious children get a healthy start on
life provides all the reward she needs.
“I just love it,” says Sylvia, who credits life
at The Mayflower with giving her ample time
to volunteer. “When you don’t have to worry
about the sprinkler system and the lawn and
the roof, you have more time on your hands
to give back.”
hether they’re just out and about in downtown
Winter Park, or heading for more adventurous
locales across Florida, Mayflower residents now
have two new, luxurious ways to travel.
For group excursions, the community’s 2015
Federal Coach Spirit shuttle bus comes equipped
with a host of amenities, including two movie
monitors, a beverage and snack center, ice cooler,
overhead storage, neck pillows, blankets, spacious
seating and a speaker system with wireless
headphones. For shorter trips that can include
wheelchair-accessible medical transport, a 2015
Ford Transit van offers plenty of room and
personalized comfort.
On both buses, vehicle “wraps,” which feature
stunning photography of Mayflower vistas, enable
images of the community to travel right along with
the residents.
“The bus gives us the flexibility to go wherever we
want at any time,” says Janelle Renda, community
services director. “It’s already become a big
presence in Winter Park and throughout Central
Florida, and people are definitely taking notice of
its gorgeous presentation. It really speaks to the
sophistication and class that distinguish life at
The Mayflower.”
Experts in Senior Care
In addition to featuring a 5-Star rated, Gold Seal Health Center,
The Mayflower has recently formed an innovative partnership with
the new Senior ER at Winter Park Memorial Hospital.

addition, The Mayflower Health Center was
ranked as one of the “Best Nursing Homes”
in 2015 by U.S. News & World Report.
Here, patients receive a range of
services that include 24/7 licensed nursing
care, a resident physician, convenient
transportation, customized daily activity
programs and dietitian-approved meals
in a fine-dining atmosphere. Short- and
long-term rehabilitation is also available
for physical therapy, occupational therapy
and speech/language pathology. On-site
specialty appointments cover podiatry,
optometry, audiology, wound care, dentistry,
dermatology and ophthalmology.
“The Mayflower’s high ratings demonstrate
our commitment to excellence in healthcare for
older adults,” says Ann Cameron, director of
health services. “That’s why we’re so honored
to have been chosen to partner with Winter
Park Memorial Hospital on its
new Senior ER program.”
Partners in Innovation
As one of a select few retirement
communities chosen to partner with
Winter Park Memorial Hospital’s
Senior ER (the first of its kind in
Central Florida), The Mayflower is
engaged in a collaborative effort to
develop a standard protocol that will
improve communication with all
senior facilities in the area. This new

protocol will ensure that appropriate
and accurate data (such as a patient’s
chief complaints, medical history, current
medications, family contacts and primary
physician) are provided in a timely manner
to the ER. In addition to saving time for both
patients and hospital staff, this enhanced
communication provides a more seamless
process that helps minimize readmissions,
improve continuity of care and streamline
the ER experience.
Once a quarter, healthcare leaders from
the hospital will also attend quality-assurance
meetings at The Mayflower to engage in regular
dialogue that promotes a unified approach.
“We’re excited that The Mayflower is
bringing its expertise to the table in helping
shape best practices that promote advances in
senior care,” says Ken Bradley, CEO of Winter
Park Memorial Hospital. “The Mayflower has
been a leader in long-term care for more than
25 years, and its partnership with our Senior ER
will tremendously benefit both organizations as
well as the greater community.”
