Five teams on the network are lacing up their
boots to play each other this season and Southern
stations will be resounding to the sound of chants
and cheers come match day
The history, the atmosphere, the
rivalry. There’s nothing quite like a
local derby to get the blood pumping,
and this season fans in the south can
get ready for a hatful. Thanks to
Southampton and Brighton winning
promotion to the Championship,
there will be five clubs on the
Southern network playing each
other home and away. But what
will the season hold for Millwall,
Crystal Palace, Portsmouth and the
two newcomers?
Down on the coast at Brighton,
expectations are high. After 14 years
as the nomads of English football,
Seagulls fans are desperate to get
through the turnstiles of their new
22,500-seater Amex Stadium and
see how their team matches up in the
division. And with extra train services
to nearby Falmer Station, the club is
well prepared to welcome the crowds
needed to fund their lofty ambitions.
Further along the coast, fans of
Southampton are looking forward
to renewing old rivalries with
neighbours Portsmouth, while
4——GO Southern ISSUE 7
Millwall will hope to shake off the
disappointment of missing out on a
play-off place last term to challenge
for promotion – not to mention the
small matter of staying ahead of
Crystal Palace in the south London
pecking order.
But according to the experts, of the
five sides, new boys Southampton are
most fancied to be celebrating come
May. After an impressive campaign last
year, they boasted five players in the
League One PFA team of the season,
with England under-21 midfielder
Adam Lallana and Portuguese defender
José Fonte giving Saints fans cause
for optimism. But, as all fans know,
predictions count for little.
Soon though it will be time to
put the guesswork to one side. The
first of the southern match-ups
– Portsmouth v Brighton – is on
Saturday 13 August. In total there
will be 20 league games between
the five clubs, with nearby Southern
stations at each of the grounds easing
the path for both home and away
fans (see page 6).

Up the Town
It’s been a long time coming,
but Crawley Town has finally
made it. Two divisions
beneath the Championship,
the West Sussex club are set to make their
very first appearance in the football league
in League 2.
The Red Devils have a long and proud
history stretching all the way back to 1896,
but it’s only in recent years that they have
had the financial backing to make the step
up to league football.
Last season’s runaway Conference Premier
champions were also its biggest spenders,
adding players such as Matt Tubbs, a £70,000
signing from Salisbury City, and Argentinian
striker Sergio Torres to their ranks.
You can help welcome them to the big time
by taking a trip to see their home games at
Broadfield Stadium – just a short walk from
Crawley Station.

Interview
With the final instalment of the Harry
Potter film series enchanting cinema goers
across the region, actor Daniel Radcliffe
talks about how he feels about saying
goodbye to Harry, how he plans to get a
tattoo now that his contract is over, and
the close bond he has formed with his cast
mates
HOW DOES IT FEEL COMING TO THE
END AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?
D: It’s bizarre, you know, we filmed
it all in one go – Parts 1 and 2 – and
on the last day it was just bizarre
and there were a lot of tears and,
you know, I wept like a child!
DID YOU REALLY CRY?
D: It’s 10 years of our lives so it’s
bizarre. I’m on another job at
the moment and I’ve got another
job coming up but at the time
the outlook seemed really bleak.
I was like, ‘What am I going to
do now’? But no, it was quite
emotional but it was great.
SO HAVE YOU FELT A BIT LOST SINCE
IT ALL FINISHED?
D: I actually had a really weird
moment the other day when I
was in the lifts in my apartment,
not in my apartment, up to my
apartment, I don’t have lifts inside
my apartment, that would be
awesome. But I just sort of looked
in the mirror and bizarrely missed
10——GO SOUTHERN ISSUE 7
the scar and thought, ‘I’ll never
have that piece of make-up on
again.’ Yeah it was very weird.
WAS THERE ANYTHING IN YOUR
CONTRACT THAT YOU WERE
DESPERATE TO DO WHEN YOU
FINISHED FILMING?
previous
D: Not really. I do like having my
hair a lot shorter but I’m doing
a film.
WHAT ABOUT TATTOOS?
D: I don’t want to get my whole face
tattooed but I definitely do want to get
some tattoos, which would have been
really ill advised if I’d done that during
Potter. As far as a tan is concerned, I
am the world’s palest man anyway so
it would be pointless me getting a tan.
I’d just look ridiculous.
home
YOU GUYS MUST BE SUCH GOOD
FRIENDS. DO YOU STAY IN TOUCH MUCH
WHEN YOU’RE NOT DOING THE MOVIES?
D: Well over the past 10 years there
haven’t been many times when we’ve
not been doing the movies – that’s
ISSUE 7 GO Southern——11

Harry Potter and ...
ARE YOU GOING TO FACTOR IN TIME
THOUGH NOW SEEING AS YOU’RE
NOT GOING TO BE DOING THE

D: Yes absolutely. Especially as I’m
doing a show in New York and
Emma’s going to be in America so
I’m sure we’ll be able to hook up.
REALLY? YOU’RE NOT USED TO IT NOW?
D: When you get out of the car and

...the Chamber of

AND YOU GOT TO KISS THE LOVELY
EMMA WATSON IN PART 1 WHO SAID
YOU WERE FABULOUS BY THE WAY.
D: Did she? Fantastic. That’s great.
WAS IT WEIRD THOUGH?
D: It was quite weird. Especially
because, I don’t know, I thought it was
going to be like a slow, sensual kind of
thing and it was quite vigorous. I was
taken by surprise. But no, it was great.
I’m not going to complain because
there are thousands of men worldwide
who would have cut off a limb to be
in that position. So yeah I enjoyed it.
What was slightly bizarre about it was
that we were actually covered in silver
body paint and glitter to have that
effect to look the way it did. So it was
slightly odd. It looked like we’d just
spent the night in a club or something.
YOU HAVE COMPARED BEING IN
HARRY POTTER TO BEING IN THE
MAFIA, SAYING ONCE YOU’RE IN
YOU’RE NEVER OUT, SO DO YOU GET
YOUR WAND OUT IN SECRET?
D: I do my own little Scorcese film at
home with all my Harry Potter props
that I’ve stolen – I have stolen some.
WHAT DID YOU TAKE?
D: Well I stole quite a few things from
a couple of sets. They had all these
sort of goblets and things, there were
hundreds, so I thought they’re not going
to miss any of them. And then I’ve got
the glasses as well. I’ve got the pair from
the first film and the pair from the last
film. The pair from the first film are tiny,
when I was a little me. So yeah I’ve got
both of them and that’s awesome.
12——GO SOUTHERN ISSUE 7
CAN YOU GO ANYWHERE WITH PEOPLE
NOT RECOGNISING YOU AS HARRY?
...the Prisoner of
Azkaban (2004)
D: I can but wherever I go I play on
it. Sometimes I make up a whole
new reality for myself. It’s fun.
Actually a while back a guy was
teaching me bass guitar and after
a year-and-a-half of lessons he still
had no idea who I was. Either that
or he was the coolest man alive
and really didn’t care.
...the Goblet of
Fire (2005)
HOW HARD HAS IT BEEN AT TIMES TO
BE NORMAL AND DO NORMAL THINGS?
D: There is a certain amount of
that and it’s a fine line between
accepting that and talking about
it. The last thing people want
to see is a celebrity whingeing.
Everyone hates that – I hate that.
There are tricky moments and
you do find yourself in situations
that you would not be in were
it not for being Harry Potter or
being famous. But all of that is so
outweighed by the joy of being
on set. The premieres and stuff is
something else – that’s fun and
weird and mad – but filming is
what matters to me and what I
love doing. I just couldn’t give that
up, no matter how mad it all got.
YOUR LAST POTTER PREMIERE IS
COMING UP. CAN YOU REMEMBER THE
FIRST 10 YEARS AGO?
D: I can and it was terrifying then and
it’s only slightly less terrifying now.
you’re hit by that wall of sound
and screaming it is just insane. I
mean it’s incredible and amazing
but it’s quite scary and intimidating
too.
...the Order of the
Phoenix (2007)

the world that doesn’t want there
to be an eighth Harry Potter book.
YOU CAN’T SAY THAT!
D: I can! Believe me I’ve given 10

They’re here at last! School’s out and the
holidays have begun. Many parents and
guardians will be thinking about things to
do with the kids during the holidays, so why
not let Southern Railway take you away on
the adventure you’ve been dreaming about?
Sunshine, sand, adventure, culture
and fun – they’re all out there on the Southern
network. Now all you need is a map to plot
your route, an activity book full of ideas
which will also help keep the kids and their
busy minds occupied and, most importantly,
a really cheap way of getting there.
Isn’t it lucky then that Southern has
already thought about all of those wishes to
help your family plan the perfect Southern

years – I can. Look, I’ve had an
amazing time, I think it’s been
an amazing 10 years and I would
be quite happy for it to finish at
this point because, you know, the
stories were rounded off in such a
succinct and perfect way – I don’t
know how you’d go back to it.
ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH THE
ASSOCIATION YOU’LL HAVE FOR THE REST
OF YOUR LIFE WITH THE CHARACTER?
D: Every opportunity I will get
for the rest of my life, I would
not have got if it wasn’t for
Harry Potter. And it would be
the height of ingratitude if I was
ever anything but proud to be
associated with these films.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE HARRY POTTER
FRANCHISE – WHY HAS THE WORLD
LOVED IT SO MUCH?
D: I think it’s a combination of things.
...the Half-Blood
Prince (2009)
Let Southern take you on a fun-filled summer to remember
Partly it’s the fact that, you know, it’s
a book in a rich tradition of sort of
orphan literature, where the character
is an orphan from the beginning
and that automatically sets him up
as being an underdog for life and
the success and the strength of the
character and also the meticulously
created world of magic, people love
to get involved in the laws and rules
of it I think. And so that combined
with many, many millions of pounds
and a big budget for a film – it’s a
winning combination!

Hallows – Part 2 is now in cinemas

Step back into the golden age of travel and enjoy a car-free day out on the Spa Valley Railway
Earlier this year the volunteers of the
Spa Valley Railway achieved their
greatest ambition – the re-opening of
the link to the Southern main line at
Eridge for the first time in 26 years.
Thanks to their efforts passengers
are now able to travel by train
from London, join the Spa Valley
steam train at Eridge and enjoy a
completely car-free day out in the
beautiful Sussex and Kent Weald.
Paul McKinnell is a director of the line.
“It’s a real pleasure for us to see all the
happy faces travelling along the line we
rebuilt ourselves, and we have to pinch
ourselves that we’ve actually done it,”
he said. “We’re a unique proposition, in
that as well as being an attraction in our
own right, there’s loads to see and do
right next to all our stations.”
The smart green and red train
with its well upholstered seats really
is a throwback to a bygone age.
Uniformed stewards wait to take
your drinks order and food on offer
includes a cream tea or doughnuts.
First stop is Groombridge, where
there’s a ‘chocolate box’ village on
a green.
The next station up the line is High
Rocks, situated in the High Rocks
Inn’s garden. Above the inn, you can
explore acres of sandstone outcrops
and cliffs, all linked by ornamental
bridges.
The Spa Valley’s terminus is at
Tunbridge Wells West, perfectly
situated just a short walk from
the famous Pantiles – a Georgian
colonnaded parade of shops and
coffee houses.
Back at the station, you can take
a look at the historic collection of
engines and carriages undergoing
repair in the only Victorian engine
shed still serving its original purpose.
The Spa Valley Railway runs
every weekend between April and
October, plus Santa Specials in
December and weekdays in the
school holidays. There’s also a
chance to meet Peppa Pig and
George on 10 September.
Joint tickets are available
from all Southern
stations.

Go Southern has a family
ticket to give away for
a trip on the Spa Valley
Railway. The ticket is available
on weekends from 11 September to
16 October (dates and timings based on
the current 2011 timetable).
To be in with a chance of winning this
lovely day out please send your name,
address, email address and phone
number to gosoutherncompetition@
southernrailway.com by 31 August 2011
marking your entry ‘Spa Valley’. Please
let us know which day you would like to
travel. The winner will be picked at random
and there are no cash alternatives.

Mitcham
magic
Southern’s Mitcham Junction Station was
highly commended in the Rail Station of the
Year category at the London Transport Awards.
The entry was a joint one by the London
Borough of Merton, Southern and Network Rail
and was up against stiff competition – not
least Southern’s own Streatham Hill Station.
There had been long-standing concerns
about access to Mitcham Junction Station, in
particular the amount of parked cars on the
forecourt, the poor cycling parking facilities,
the litter and graffiti, a nearby waste transfer
station creating an unappealing environment,
plus poor lighting and uneven surfaces.
In a joint effort a new footbridge was
constructed, the waste transfer station
was relocated, and covered cycle parking
and motorcycle parking was provided.
Lighting, new signage, new disabled parking
bays and a designated drop-off area were
all introduced. And litter and graffiti were
removed to add a more welcoming feel.
Southern’s Head of Stations Chris Brooks
said: ”This is so deserved as the investment
of time, money and effort by all three
organisations working together has truly
transformed Mitcham Junction Station and the
surrounding area.”
Cracking
racking
Southern has introduced a double
deck cycle rack at Sutton Station.
It will now hold 40 cycles,
double the amount and is covered
by a canopy to keep the worst
of the rain off, and by 24-hour
CCTV.
The rack was installed following
comments from passengers, local
authorities and user groups
who contributed to

commitment to improving a business through
our people, a premise supported by our vision
of ‘Making Every Journey Better’ for both our
passengers and staff.
To achieve accreditation, Investors in

400 Southern staff across the business to
gather evidence that we fully engaged our
staff on topics such as recognition, leadership
capability and opportunities for personal
growth and development. Southern’s senior
management were also interviewed to ensure

Southern’s area manager, Mark

extremely positive.”

Aids for passengers with learning difficulties
or whose first language is not English, and
passengers who often find communicating
difficult, have been introduced by Southern.
The Easy Read Accessibility Guide explains stepby-step everything people need to enable them to
use Southern’s services. Laid out in simple, easy
to understand language, the guide
uses pictures to illustrate each point.
There’s also information on
travelling with a wheelchair or
mobility scooter, station and
train accessibility, access
on board trains and using
Southern’s Priority Seat Card.
Easy Read information is also available
at www.southernrailway.com/easyread. The
Travel Support Card is a pocket size card which
has details of the holder’s home station, where
they travel to and from, and a section which
can be pre-written, stating how staff can help
them. It also contains useful contact numbers,
and a space for the card holder’s emergency
contact number.
Finally the communication aid will help those
who find communicating difficult and is a
laminated pictorial A4 size card which enables
the passenger to point to a picture to indicate
to a member of Southern staff what they need
help with.
All three aids are available to download
from www.southernrailway.com, from Customer
Services and on request from most ticket offices.

The spring 2011 National Passenger Survey
has shown that the improvement work
Southern has been focusing on over the
last year has paid off, with passengers
recognising the improvements.
Published by rail watchdog Passenger
Focus, the report shows Southern
increased scores in:
l The upkeep/repair of station buildings
and platforms
l Cleanliness of stations
l The overall station environment
l Personal security while at stations
l How requests to station staff were handled
l Frequency of trains
l Connections with other train services
l Toilet facilities on trains
l Personal security while on board trains
l How well Southern dealt with delays.
Southern Managing Director Chris Burchell
said: “I am extremely pleased that the
areas where we have been working hard
to improve have been recognised by our
passengers. We have just completed a
major station deep clean and repainting
programme which is reflected in the scores.”
Southern has also been working
hard to improve its on-train toilets, which
was recognised with a two per cent
increase in satisfaction. However, Chris
Burchell recognised that there is still much
work to be done and that all at Southern
will continue to work hard to improve in
all areas.
