Spend the weeken d o f Apr il F ool's Day in a fool's paradise
of mu sic and dan ce. This year's program will feature N ew
England traditional dance, Southern squares, Irish stepdan cing, traditional French and Br et on socia l dan ce, and
son g and instrument wor ksh ops. Mu sic and da nce wor kshops will be h eld throughout Saturday and Sunday, and
there will be even in g dances on Friday and Saturday. As
always, there will be plent y o f opportunities for in for ma l
dancing, singing, and mu sic-m akin g. Be sure to bring
somet hing foolish for the Saturday evening F ool's Dan ce.
CAMP LETTS
Loca t ed in Edgewa ter, Ma ryla nd, ten m iles fr om Ann apolis
and 34 m iles fr om Washington, D.C., Camp Letts is on a
peninsula creat ed by t wo rivers flowin g into the Chesa ­
peake Ba y. Th e ca m p is own ed and operated by the
YM C A on the grou nds of a for m er estate. Th e main
dances will be h eld in the spa ciou s wood -floor ed dance
hall over look in g the waterfront. This bu ildin g dou bles as
the dining hall for meals prepar ed by ou r favor it e caterer,
Barbara Kline. Smaller wor ksh ops will be h eld in other
buildings on the ca mp gr ou nds. Weather per mitting, we
will also h ave a ccess to other ca m p facilit ies including
wa lking trails, tennis cou r ts, athletic fields, boa t in g, and
h or seba ck riding (m odest fee). Cabins are dor mit or y
style, sleepin g 8-12 person s to a r oom . We ca n a ccom ­
modat e m ost people in heated facilit ies wit h bat hr ooms,
but som e participants will be assigned to m or e rustic,
unheated cabin s. Cabin assignments are ba sed on date of
r eceipt of a pplica tion and spa ce is limit ed so regist er

and P in ewoods, wit h his own com posit ion s as well as tradi­
tiona l son gs and stor ies he learned as a ch ild. Lotus will be

in Indiana.

socia l dances. A teacher o f international folk da nce
at Santa Rosa J unior College in Ca lifor n ia for 18
years, Ma r ilyn has don e ext en sive r esea rch into the
traditional m usic and dances o f France, studying in
master dance cla sses and meet ing with mu sician s and
instrument makers. She has h elped or ga nize dan ce
camps at Men docin o and has taught at ma ny others,
including P in ewoods, Bu ffa lo Gap, St ockt on , and the
K olo Festival. Ma r ilyn will t each traditional gr ou p
and cou ple da nces o f France, par ticular ly t h ose of
Berry and the Auvergn e.
B ob M cQ u ille n , pia n o and a ccor dia n . B ob pla yed h is first
da nce for Ra lph Pa ge in 1947 and sin ce then has est ablish ed
h im self as the quintessential New E ngla nd dan ce m usician . His
or igin a l com posit ion s, su ch as "Da n cin g Bea r" and "Am elia 's
Wa lt z," h a ve been en joyed by ma ny dancers and r ecor ded by
m an y artists. P er for min g with B ob this weeken d will be

been ca llin g dan ces for mor e than ten years, fr om N ew England
to Devon , England, and at fest iva ls in clu ding F ox H ollow,
E ist eddfod, NEFF A, Heritage, and Hu dson River. She has
written m or e than 25 dan ces, ma ny o f wh ich h a ve been taken
into the popula r da n ce reper toire. She has been president of
the N ew E ngla nd F olk Festiva l Associa t ion sin ce 1985.
C r it t on H ollow S t r in g Ba n d , Sout h er n da n ce ba n d. Wit h
S a m H e r r m a n n on h ammered dulcim er , J oe H e r r m a n n on
fiddle, and J oe F a llon on guitar and ba n jo, Cr it ton H ollow

Glen E ch o Irish F olk Festival. Linnane will be

Th e cost for the weeken d is $100, wh ich includes

supply own beddin g) and use o f oth er ca mp facilit ies, and
five meals (pot lu ck Friday n igh t ). Each a pplica tion must
be a ccom pa n ied by a $60 deposit o f wh ich all but $15
will be r efunded if ca n cella tion is ma de by Ma r ch 17.
You are en cour a ged to pay the fu ll fee in a dvance if
possible. Full payment must be ma de on arrival at Ca mp
Letts. Ch eck -in begin s at 4:00 p.m . Frida y; the pr ogra m
con clu des at 3:30 Sunday. A number of $60 registrations
are available in exch a n ge for five hours o f wor k in the

Attendance at the dan ce weeken d is limit ed. In the
past it has filled up very quickly, so early
