tudents who attended the Third Grade Reading
Night on February 4, 2015 with their parents listened to the children’s author, Johnny Cuomo
speak about the writing and illustrating process in publishing his first two books about the “Puffs” adventures with
humans. Time was also spent reading with each other
and designing their own “Puff” characters to make a
memorable evening in celebration of reading.

100th Day of School
Kindergarten students celebrated being “100 days
Smarter” on Thursday, February 25, 2016 by dressing as
if they were 100 years old. From gray hair and spectacles
to curlers and pearls, students also did a number of fun
activities in their classes to celebrate this yearly milestone.
ALS Check
E
ach year the Mt Sinai Elementary Student Council
sponsors an ALS baseballs sale. The proceeds of this
fundraiser are proudly donated to Mr. Chris Pendergast
and the ALS foundation - "Ride for Life". In addition to
this sale, our 4th grade students went classroom to classroom collecting water bottles and cans and recycled
them. These combined efforts resulted in a $2000 donation last May! At the January board meeting the students
and staff were awarded the "Silver" award from Chris
Pendergast himself. Mt. Sinai Elementary students are
active players on the ALS team and will continue to work
to strike out ALS!

Kindergarten Reading Night
Mr. Cuomo
he kindergarten students had a wonderful time
listening to the story of “The Little Red Hen”
retold by Heather Forest. Then they took a trip back in
time as they listened to special stories about themselves
as babies retold by their own moms and dads. They enjoyed a special treat and left with a brand new book!
O
n Friday, March 11th, Mrs. Nania’s class had the
pleasure of having a special visit from Mr. Cuomo. Mr.
Cuomo taught the fourth grade class a little about a few
Irish instruments. Not only did the children get to enjoy
listening to his musical talents, but in addition, their classmate Johnny played with his dad a taste of an Irish and
Bluegrass song

Snowman Contest
uring the week of Monday, February 1st through
Friday, February 5th Mt. Sinai Elementary School
students participated in the Second annual “Soup-er
Bowl” event. The students were bowling in their Physical
Education classes and were asked to bring in a can of
soup to be donated to the Hope House Ministries in Port
Jefferson. This event helped our students establish a
better understanding of charity and their role in our community. Student’s donations counted as votes to help
decide which team would win between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. The
final number of donated cans was: Denver Broncos – 342
and Carolina Panthers – 237. Making our grand total 579
cans of soup!
Sweet Potato Pie—Folktales & Fables
Elementary School students were treated to African
folktales and fables recognizing the importance of positive
character traits and collaboration. A number of students
(and teachers!) joined on stage for all to enjoy. Our

“Meet Harvey, Our Furry Visitor”
T
he Literacy Magazine Club (Zed) and the Art
Club have once again decided to collaborate this
year in our creative pursuits. Working together last year
proved to be truly beneficial for the students who participated in both clubs and led to a wonderfully unique display of students’ work in both language arts and the fine
arts. Meeting on scheduled Wednesday afternoons, the
Art Club and Zed share their creations with each other in
a way to create new poetry and artwork. Music also plays
its role as a form of inspiration for the students. During
Zed sessions, students listen to selected music, and compose their poems from their impressions of the
piece. Progressing naturally from last year’s focus on
Impressionist music, this year has taken a look at notable
Jazz artists such as Wes Montgomery and Count Basie. As always, the goal between the two clubs is to foster thoughtful creativity and expression.
Harvey
Members of the Art and Zed Club
In February, the middle school welcomed Harvey, a
puppy from the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind. Mrs.
Wallace will be raising Harvey for the next year, and then
he will be returned to the Foundation for formal training,
where he will learn the skills required to assist a person
who is blind. During the first year of his life, it is important
that Harvey is properly socialized. He needs to be exposed to a variety of situations and public places, so being in a school environment will be very helpful to him.
Harvey's presence has resulted in a renewed districtwide effort to sponsor a Guide Dog puppy. When enough
funds are raised, students in all three buildings will have
an opportunity to vote on the sponsored puppy's name. If
you are interested in donating, please go to the district
website and follow the link under Upcoming Events.

Home and Careers Club 5th & 6th grade
“The kitchen is a country in which there are always discoveries to be made”
Ms. Pomponio wants her students to have fun and embrace their creative side when they meet for home and
careers club every Thursday and Friday afternoon. She
always wants them to learn something new every time
they meet. During the first meeting, she asked the club
participants what they were interested in doing. This is
important because Ms. Pomponio can come up with ideas
and techniques to show the students based on the foods
they are most interested in. Ms. Pomponio also likes to
know what foods the students are interested in because
she is able to teach them about other types of foods from
various cultures to help expand their pallet and broaden
their horizons. Throughout the year the home and careers club has made several things including items for the
holidays such as Halloween masks, door hangers, posters, and holiday ornaments. The home and careers club
also made friendship bracelets for the members to give to
their friends and family, as well as a variety of cookies,
scratch art magnets, and several different picture frames.
The members had a great time making wreaths and
“stained glass” to put on our window sills. Ms. Pomponio
always felt it was important to do these types of crafts
with children. Ms. Pomponio recalls fond memories of
making Christmas ornaments in grade school and is reminded of them each year, when she sees her mother’s
tree decorated with the same ones she made some time
ago. Ms. Pomponio believes that sometimes some of the
smallest things can have such a large impact on a parent,
grandparent, or friend that they will stay with you for many
years to come.
Awareness Night at Mt. Sinai Middle School
A
s part of our ongoing mission to promote kindness,
unity, and good decision-making, Peer Support hosted
our seventh annual Awareness Night at Mt. Sinai Middle
School on January 29, 2016. The intent of Awareness
Night is to sensitize our seventh and eighth grade students to pertinent social issues such as bullying, selfconfidence, friendship, self-image and the importance of
making good decisions. In addition, Awareness Night is
designed to break down walls and build bridges between
students of divergent ethnic and social groups.
Students were given the opportunity to process
presentations and debrief in smaller supervised Family
Groups.
This year’s guest speaker was Shadrack
Boyke. Shadrack delivered inspirational messages that
our students could relate to. In addition, a snack and dinner were provided for all of the participants. Thanks to
the PTO for sponsoring the event and a special thanks to
Mrs. Tabile and Mrs. Tartaglia for preparing the dinner.
The evening began immediately after school and concluded at 10:30 pm.

Winter Social
Winter Rec Night
The Middle School Student Council hosted the second
Teen Rec Night of the school year. The first, Rec Night
back in December was such a big hit for the 6th grade, the
Student Council also invited the 7th Grade this time
around. The evening started off with a giant indoor
“snowball” fight. All those who played had a blast.
Throughout the night the students hopped from activity to
activity. There were Ping Pong tournaments, Karaoke
singing, and even a Foul Shooting Contest. The student
council will be hosting one more Rec Night this spring. Be
sure to check the middle school website for more details.
The annual 5th and 6th grade Winter Social was a huge
success! The students spent the afternoon dancing and
enjoying each other’s company. The student council provided the music and the fun. At this social, the student
council tried out a new DJ and he was a big hit. The DJ
not only spun today’s pop hits, but filled the afternoon with
amazing activities. The time flew by with hula hoop contests, dance contents and even a winter mummy wrap
contest. Don’t forget the next social is scheduled for the
beginning of May. It will be the Annual Ice Cream Social
and the final social of the school year.

Mount Sinai Takes Second Place in Stony Brook
University’s Bay Scallop Bowl
T
he Ocean Sciences Bowl team from Mount Sinai High School won second place at Stony
Brook University’s Bay Scallop Bowl on March 5, which
was held at its new venue this year, Mount Sinai Middle
School. The regional competition included sixteen teams
from Long Island, New York City, and upstate New York.
Team members this year included Alexander Mulé (Team
Captain), Daniel O’Mara, Nicholas Eberhard, Andrew Rodriguez and Benjamin May. Each team member will receive a check for $250 for winning second place. Our
team remained in the lead all day as they defeated such
schools as Three Village, Stuyvesant, and Half Hollows
Hills East. They remained undefeated until the last round
when students from Midwood High School in Brooklyn
took first place.
The team was coached this year by Ms. Gina Sing and
Ms. Glynis Nau-Ritter with assistance from Mr. David
Chase. Out of the fifteen Bay Scallop Bowls, Mount Sinai
has placed first nine times and second place several
times. The hard work and dedication of both the coaches
and students contribute to our “hard to beat” teams!
Prior to the Scallop Bowl, the team also placed second
at the Long Island regional competition of the National
Science Bowl. The competition consists of a round robin
followed by a double elimination final in a format similar to
the Ocean Bowl. The questions, however, were multiple
choice and short answer on such categories as chemistry,
biology, physics, mathematics, astronomy, earth science,
and computer science.
Mount Sinai’s team consisted of Nicholas Eberhard,
Patrick Hanaj, Alexander Mulé (Captain), Daniel O’Mara,
Andrew Rodriguez and Ms. Sing (Coach) with preparatory
sessions this year with Ms. Nau-Ritter. During the morning round robin session, Mount Sinai faced Bishop
McGann-Mercy, Half Hollow Hills East, Commack and
Malverne high schools. For the first time ever, Mount Sinai was undefeated and made it to the double elimination
competition after lunch where students defeated Great
Neck South and Farmingdale, placing them in the finals.
Farmingdale emerged victorious in the final rounds and
Mount Sinai was awarded a second place trophy, medals
and $50 to each student. Congratulations to all students
involved in the “Bowl” competitions.
Patrick Hanaj, Alexander Mulé, Daniel O’Mara, Nicholas Eberhard, Andrew Rodriguez and Ms. Sing.
Alexander Mulé
Semi-Finalist in Biology Olympiad
Senior Alexander Mulé is a semi-finalist in the USA
Biology Olympiad under the auspices of Ms. Glynis NauRitter. Over 10,000 students and fifty schools participated in the 2016 exam this year, which was given on February 12. This is the second year in a row that Alexander has achieved a semi-finalist position. He was also
awarded this status last year on the USA Chemistry
Olympiad under the guidance of Dr. James DiNapoli.
Good luck Alexander as you proceed to the next testing session which not only includes higher-level multiple
choice questions, but also short answer questions related to biological research topics.
If successful, Alexander will continue to the national
and international Biology Olympiad held over the summer in Vietnam.

STEM Initiative Program
S
tudents from Mount Sinai High School and Port
Jefferson High School participated in the second
year of Stony Brook University’s Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math Initiative (STEM) Program where
high school students were given the opportunity to explore various aspects of engineering and computer programming. The program was conducted on Thursdays
from November until March at the I-STEM Center for Science and Math Education located on the Stony Brook
University campus. Students who were selected in the
program attended sessions at Stony Brook University with
high school science teachers, Ms. Glynis Nau-Ritter and
Ms. Catherine Hantz. The fall session included programs
on horticulture, which were performed in the university’s
greenhouse along with a genetics program using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) techniques. The spring
session included one group creating electronic circuit
boards while the other group studied the population dynamics of penguins in Antarctica.
Select members of the STEM program were interviewed with Port Jefferson students and teachers on February 23, by Mr. Bob Vecchio of 103.9 FM radio during a
show entitled, “Spotlight on Long Island Schools.” The
group was divided into two eleven minute sessions to be
aired on Saturday, March 19, at 10:30 a.m. One group
included Ms. Hantz (Master Teacher) with Benjamin May
and Noreen Guilfoyle (photo below) who discussed the
beginning of the STEM Program. The other group included Ms. Nau-Ritter with Damian DeMarco and Alexander
Cubillo who discussed specific sessions of the program.
The funding of this STEM Initiative Program is arranged through a grant from Senator LaValle and will
hopefully continue next year with another group of students from ninth through eleventh grades who show a
strong interest in pursuing science and engineering. Any
interested students should see Ms. Nau-Ritter or Ms.
Hantz in the high school.
INTERACT Club
Prior to the winter break, Interact Club members collected items to donate to Save-a-Pet Animal Shelter.
Items ranged from cat/dog food, treats, leashes, collars,
cat litter, cat/dog beds and toys. The students were more
than happy with the incredible response of the community. We were able to fill a truck with donated items and
bring them to the animals at the shelter. Bryan Koflanovich was instrumental in organizing this event. He has
been volunteering his time at the shelter and the donation
was greatly welcomed by the staff. Please visit the Savea-Pet website at www.saveapetli.net/donate for a complete listing.
We are currently beginning to work on our new activity
called “Pennies for Patients.” It is an annual fundraiser
for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to promote research and awareness. Each student will have a donation kit to raise money for this worthy cause. Checks can
be made payable to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The Mount Sinai High School Interact Club meets every other Monday in the high school cafeteria after school.
The purpose of this club is to provide community support
and volunteer efforts to the local and international communities. New members are always welcome. Please
contact Ms. Falco for more information.

Class of 2016 Goes to Disney
O
n March 9, approximately one hundred and forty seniors and twelve staff members embarked on a five day trip to Orlando, Florida, to visit the many attractions that make up
Disney World. Mr. Izzo and Mr. McEvoy, senior class advisors, created an action packed
itinerary for the group.
After arriving at the hotel on Wednesday, the group woke up on Thursday ready to board the various rides and roller coasters at Universal Studios. On Friday, they set out for the Magic Kingdom for
breakfast with the characters, then, they were off to explore the various attractions. Subsequently,
the group reconvened in the late afternoon and headed to Epcot to experience the cultures represented by the various countries within the park and the well-known light show. On Saturday, the
group awoke a bit groggy, but recharged at breakfast and boarded buses to Hollywood Studios for
another day of rides and attractions. Later that evening, the group returned to the Magic Kingdom to
observe the fireworks show. Again, after getting to bed late, the group forged on Sunday morning to
visit the Animal Kingdom for one last day of rides and sightseeing.
As one would imagine, the “always on the run” itinerary began to take its toll on the group, especially the chaperones. Luckily, it was time to regroup and head to the airport for a return trip to
Mount Sinai.
All in all, the trip was a great success; students were great, the weather was outstanding and all
chaperones survived. Kudos to Mr. Izzo and Mr. McEvoy for a job well done!

Battle of the Educators
On Friday, March 4, about thirty faculty
members laced up their sneakers once
again for the 15th Annual Battle of the
Educators. This night continues to be
a fun time for faculty, students and parents alike. It also serves as a great
fund-raising event for the Booster Club,
who in turn have generously donated
funds for various programs throughout the District.
The gymnasium was packed again to capacity as
spectators cheered on their favorite teachers and other
players. The staff dazzled the crowd with their basketball
skills and nifty play. After a close first half, the team comprised of high school and elementary school staff members pulled away from the middle school team. Regardless of the score, everyone went home happy!
Volunteer Fair
The first Volunteer Fair was held on Wednesday and
Thursday, February 24 and 25, in the high school’s library. This event was sponsored by members of the National Honor Society. Students were given the opportunity to obtain information on volunteer options from local
non-profit organizations. The organizations that attended
this event included:
Coastal Steward
Friends of Karen
Great Strides
Guide Dog Foundation
Habitat for Humanity
Maritime Exploratorium
Mather Hospital
Mount Sinai Heritage Center
Riverhead Foundation for Marine
Research and Preservation
Long Island Cares
Legislator Sarah Anker
The Volunteer Fair was a way for community nonprofits and service organizations to showcase their work
and their need for volunteers. Many of the organizations
do extraordinary work, but face a shortage of volunteers.
At the same time, many students have a desire to volunteer, but are unfamiliar with where to start. Students
seeking volunteer work and community service had the
opportunity to speak with representatives in a casual atmosphere.
The Volunteer Fair was well attended and many of the
organizations were able to secure over one hundred student volunteers. The Mount Sinai staff and faculty are
proud of our civic-minded students who take the initiative
to get involved in their community.
College and Career Workshop
On Tuesday, February 23, the Mount Sinai High
School’s Guidance Department held a College and Career Workshop for eleventh grade students and their parents. The students met in groups in four classrooms according to their assigned counselors. This was the first of
two evening presentations, the other taking place in the
September of the students’ senior year.
On this night, counselors discussed the following
agenda items: starting the college search and trying to
find colleges that match what the student is looking for,
using Naviance, and standardized tests (SAT/SATII/ACT).
Counselors used SmartBoards to “walk” those in attendance through Naviance, highlighting several features of
the program that will assist our students in this process.
O
Freshman Orientation
n January 12, administrators and the guidance team
met with the parents of current eighth grade students to communicate the academic scope and sequence
of the secondary curriculum in preparation for their children’s arrival to Mount Sinai High School in the fall.
As such, Mr. Grable welcomed the group and shared
some general information relative to what their kids can
expect upon arrival to the high school, the various opportunities available to them, and the resources that are
available to assist them. Likewise, Mr. Dyroff shared the
role of the Guidance Department and the services the
counselors will provide for their children over the next four
years.
Subsequently, Mr. LaBianca and Mr. Matthews communicated information related to the humanities, and the
math, science and technology curricula. In conclusion,
parents were provided an opportunity to ask questions
and/or meet individually with administrators or guidance
counselors.
We look forward to hosting our student orientation program in August.

O
Peter Van Buskirk
n Tuesday, March 15, Mr. Peter Van Buskirk gave
his presentation titled, “Getting from Where You Are to
Where You Want to Be,” to our tenth and eleventh grade
students. This presentation challenged our students to
reflect on their decisions to attend college, what they have
been doing to help themselves prepare for college, and
think about what they need to do in order to help them be
successful in this endeavor.
Mr. Van Buskirk is an author, speaker, and former
Dean of Admissions at the college level. He encouraged
students to be active participants in the whole college process and to strive to find a college/university that will meet
their overall needs for academics, location, cost, structure
and other factors.
Additionally, later that evening, Mr. Van Buskirk gave a
presentation to eighth through eleventh grade students/
parents on “The Admission Game.” During this time, Mr.
Van Buskirk gave an in-depth look at the selection process that colleges go through when reviewing students’
applications. After breaking down the “ins and outs” of
the process, those in attendance reviewed four prospective applicants to a mock institution. Mr. Van Buskirk then
pointed out various aspects of each candidates’ application that may enhance or hinder their chances of being
accepted to that school.
Both of Mr. Van Buskirk’s presentations were well
received by students and parents.
The afternoon session involved commencing the writing
of a proposal to “Make a Difference in Your High School.”
The national goal of YOCS is for high school students to
“create action plans to tackle marine conservation issues
in their local community.” Our students, led by EOC
President Benjamin May (junior), wrote their grant entitled, “Buy a Bottle, Save A’Lottle.” The EOC is concerned with one-use water bottles in the high school
since they are cost inefficient and damaging both the terrestrial and marine environments. Countless plastic bottles are presently entering and filling our solid waste sites
leading to ubiquitous plastic pollution in the world’s
oceans now.
On February 12, it was announced that the EOC received one of the three mini-grants that were awarded by
YOCS to New York State. They were chosen from all the
groups that submitted proposals from the November
Summit. The money for the grant came from the Mote
Marine Lab in Sarasota, Florida, via the Coastal Steward
on Long Island.
Our students are presently working to recycle as many
water bottles as possible and replace drinking water fountains with refillable stations. These stations are found on
other high school and college campuses. Other programs to reduce plastic bottle pollution in the school are
currently under evaluation.

Their works, completed in Ms. Romeo’s Advanced
Placement Studio Art class, were on display as part of the
“GO APE” Advanced Placement exhibition at the Jeanie
Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills. The prestigious exhibition
featured 2-D and 3-D works by one hundred and twentytwo students from thirty-seven Long Island high schools.
These talented seniors were honored for their outstanding achievement in the visual arts at a closing reception on March 13.
“Advanced Visions”
Seniors, Andrew Smalley and Hallie Devlin, have been
recognized as High School Artists of Excellence by the
Long Island University Student Art League. Hallie and
Andrew were invited to participate in the twelfth annual
“Advanced Visions” Exhibition. The exhibition honors the
most accomplished student artists in Nassau and Suffolk
counties, as well as the boroughs of New York who are
enrolled in Advanced Placement Studio Art or International Baccalaureate classes.
Andrew’s original photograph and Hallie’s pastel composition were on display at the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library Gallery at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. These talented seniors were honored for
their outstanding achievement in the visual arts at a reception held on January 27.

Shadow Days
F
rom Monday, December 7, through Thursday,
December 10, we hosted our first “Shadow Days”
for eighth grade students. Fifty students from the
Middle School arrived at the High School each
day. In pairs, the students were partnered with a senior
student, forming twenty-five groups. Each group followed
the seniors’ schedule for periods 3 through 9.
These “Shadow Days” gave eighth grade students an
opportunity to experience a day in the High School. They
were able to walk the hallways, sit in a variety of classes
(AP and Regents level courses, as well as electives), and
talk with students about “life” in the school.
We received a great deal of feedback from the students involved, and we anticipate continuing this program,
with some modifications, in future years.

Movie Night
On Friday, February 26, members of the History Club
hosted another charity movie night for the children in our
community. Together with over fifty youngsters and their
parents, we watched “Inside Out” on the inflatable jumbo
screen in the high school’s library.
A great time was had by all!
Congratulations to all the students who were chosen to
participate.
Variety Show 2016
On January 22, the Class of 2017, in conjunction with
the Friends of the Arts, put on another successful Variety
Show. The show consisted of various forms of talent from
vocal performances to dance routines. Both high school
and middle school students put their talents on display for
the entire community to see. The event was one of unity
and community building, filled with great moments
throughout.
In all, over three hundred people came out to support
this wonderful event. A great time was had by all, and
those involved in its production look forward to carrying
on the tradition in years to come.
A special thank you to the Friends of the Arts, faculty
and students from both schools who helped to make this
such a great night.

Tri-M Students Performs
S
everal Tri-M students performed solo works and duets at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai this
past January. The students were Hallie Devlin (Grade 12, French horn), Emily Mantone (Grade 12, cello), Alec Donowitz (Grade 12, trumpet), Marissa Caputo (Grade 12, flute), and Claire Cai (Grade 10, violin).
The performance experience had a dual purpose: to help the students prepare for their college auditions and solo
recitals, and to provide them with the opportunity to give back to their community. The senior citizens at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center were very welcoming and appreciative of the performance by our music students. This was a wonderful example of how music can cross multi-generations and bring people together from various backgrounds and life
experiences.

Student-Centered Inspiration: Colors of Long Island, Student Expressions
By: Ms. Trapani
The Long Island Museum (LIM) located in Stony brook will host its annual Colors of Long Island: Student Expressions.
Mount Sinai High School photography students, Noreen Guilfoyle, Madison Goss, Veronica Katsaros, and Constance
Cash will be on exhibit from March 13-May 2, 2016.
This display was developed from student inspirations and ideas. Both Noreen Guilfoyle and Constance Cash through
leadership and vision cultivated their ideas into a remarkable lesson. Noreen introduced split portraits to bring awareness to the uncanny resemblances we share with our loved ones and even peers. While Constance took a more graphic
approach and created surreal portraits from an original photograph. I am proud to have the products of their exemplary
work on display.
I invite you to show your support and check out their work along with other talents island wide.
