Gerrard Lin: “30km mark. 12km

ONE Fighting Championship™ 2012
ONE Fighting Championship™ is the largest MMA organisation
in Asia and was recently recognised as The Most Exciting
MMA Promotion in the World by the prestigious Asian MMA
Awards.
The event brings the best fighters and champions in Asia
together to compete for greatness in the fastest growing sport
in the world – Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). MMA allows
fighters from all over Asia to enter the cage to prove the
effectiveness of their core martial art on the world stage. ONE
Fighting Championship™ held two sold-out events in 2012 at
the Singapore Indoor Stadium titled ONE FC: WAR OF THE
LIONS (March) and ONE FC: RISE OF KINGS (October). It
made history as more than 10,000 MMA fans in Singapore
witnessed the crowning of the first Asian World Champions on
the largest stage in Asian MMA.
Leslie Tan illustrates the triumph
of mind over matter and how
an ordinary Singaporean like
Mr Gerrard Lin is making an
extraordinary impact on the lives
of others. Mr Lin, who is better
known by his nickname Ah Siao,
ran the 2012 Standard Chartered
Marathon Singapore dragging a
14kg tyre to help raise awareness
and funds for the Bone Marrow Donor Programme.
Leslie takes readers on an up-close and personal journey into
Mr Lin’s mission; from the intense training that he put himself
through to prepare for the race, to the struggles he faced during
the run. As Mr Lin put it: “30km mark. 12km more. Hell
began....Then it was hell again as the sun became my adversary.
The body was screaming.”
Mr Lin’s accomplishment of what many would look to as an
almost impossible mission is truly an inspiration.
There’s Always Another Mountain

Jeanette Tan,
Yahoo! News, 5 june 2012
Jeanette Tan’s story about Mr
Shariff Abdullah’s determination
to live a full and normal life
despite his disability tugs is truly
a heart-gripping piece.
Jeanette draws readers in as she
brings out the difficulties and
challenges Shariff faced. 43-yearold Shariff was born without a left
foot, but from a very young age
would not let that stop him from climbing in life, both literally
and figuratively. In her story, Jeanette recounts the lowest
point in Shariff ’s life; when doctors told him that he needed to
amputate a further five inches from his left leg. The stress from
the prospect of not being able to work proved too much for him
– Shariff made several attempts to take his own life, including
drinking Dettol.
Today, Shariff climbs mountains and runs marathons to raise
awareness and funds for charity groups. Shariff ’s resilience
and ability to bounce back from adversity proves that there is
always hope, even when hope seems lost. As Jeanette illustrates
in Shariff ’s words: “...today I can be a loser, tomorrow I can be
a winner.”

Chan U-Gene,
The Sunday Times, 15 april
2012
Chan U-Gene’s story about Kirsten
Koh’s battle to recover from a
dreadful accident to walk at the
Sundown Marathon is truly a tale
for the ages.
It is a story that anyone can relate to
- and be inspired by. For Koh is not
an elite athlete. She is an ordinary
person, a weekend warrior who was
going about her own business when
she was knocked down by a lorry while cycling.
Not only did U-Gene chart the physical trauma of the accident,
noting that she underwent 19 operations totalling 80 hours,
needed 5 litres of blood from transfusions and had eight broken
bones, but this was also a record of the mental battle she went
through to recover her identity as an athlete after the accident
left her 2cm shorter, with a limp and perpetual pain.
It is a story of how an athlete was knocked down doing sport,
and how sport is helping her to get up again.

Elisa Yukie Yokoyama, Jessica Goh Kai Ling, Loh Jia Yi,
Edward Tan Yi Zhu, Samuel Neo Jiun Jie
The National Sailing Optimist Team impressed the world by
defending their Championship title at the World Team Racing
Championship.
Victory Lies in Tan’s Duel with
Life
Comprising Elisa Yukie Yokoyama, Jessica Goh, Loh Jia Yi,
Edward Tan and Samuel Neo, the championship title was
deemed “impossible”, given that they had to win the team
racing event and the overall Nation’s Cup.
Rohit Brijnath,
The team proved naysayers wrong with their determination
and success. Not only did they defend the championship title,
they also swept all individual podium positions.
The Straits Times,
4 september 2012
“What matters is what she tells us
about life, that it isn’t perfect, it’s
messy, it’s unfair and yet, she reminds
us, disadvantage is only as daunting as
we make it”.
This line from Rohit’s commentary
sums up succinctly why Laurentia
Tan’s achievements matter. Why the
Paralympics matter. And why disabled
athletes do what they do.
More importantly, this telling of Laurentia’s tale - of how even
at the Paralympics, she had to also overcome a disadvantage in
being deaf and not hearing the music in her programme - and
the unveiling of her philosophy towards life, is a lesson that
moves everyone, not just those in the sporting fraternity.
It tell us why Laurentia is an inspiration and a hero, not just
because she’s the proud owner of several Paralympic medals, but
because she’s taken on life - and won.
Never before has a country in the world dominated the elite
junior sailing event in such a fashion, and this remarkable team
from Singapore is the first.

an unprecedented back-to-back clean sweep of the world titles.
With his dedication to the team, he has grown both the quality
and quantity of the Optimist sailors from 32 in 2011 to 48 in

Going beyond the call of duty, Hidayat pays attention to
more than just the athletes’ training. He cooks for them at
competitions and communicates with their parents on their
development - demonstrating genuine care and concern for his
team.
As the Head Coach at the Singapore Silat Federation, he
demands a high standard of training and discipline from
both the coaches and the athletes. He also demonstrates
sportsmanship. He runs, kicks, punches, sweats together with
the athletes to demonstrate himself as a role model for both the
athletes and coaches.
Elisa Yukie Yokoyama
Sailing
Yukie is a fighter who performs impeccably at competitions.
She represented Singapore at several international sailing
competitions in 2012 and clinched the IODA World

titles respectively, bringing glory to the country.
Going into the last day of racing at the 2012 World
Championships with equal leading scores from her other
competitors, Yukie had to win all of her races in order to clinch
the IODA World Championship title. In the face of pressure,
Yukie did not relent and emerged victorious.
Under his charge, Singapore bagged a total of 22 Golds, 19
Silvers and 16 Bronzes in 2012 at various international Silat
competitions.
Zhou Shusen

victories since he took over the helm of leadership. In 2010, the
stunning upset of World’s Number 1 China team at the World
Team Table Tennis Championship held in Moscow, positioned
the Singaporean paddlers as a force to be reckoned with.
Vera started to participate in competitive Wushu at the tender
age of 11. With merely 3 years of experience, she has done
Singapore proud in 2012 at the 4th Junior Wushu Championship
held in Macau, China.

development, and works closely with them on their styles and
techniques in the sport.
Wushu
Organised by the International Wushu Federation, the
competition was hailed as the most prestigious Wushu
competition in the world for competitors below the age of 18.
