Product advantages and applications
■
■
■
■
TS is an ideal separation and filter geotextile for civil
engineering.
TS ensures the uniform thickness of the base course
throughout the entire period during which it is subject to
loads, by preventing the ingress of fill material into the
fine-grained substrata.
TS enhances the compacting level of the fill, which
provides improved and more uniform load distribution.
TS increases the stability of the subsoil due to faster
consolidation and reduces long-term settlement.
TS possesses balanced mechanical and hydraulic
properties. This creates both resistance to installation
damage and sufficient reinforcement, thus ensuring
optimum separation and load distribution.
Stable road with TS
TS furnishes drainage systems with lasting protection against
silting.
■ TS ensures that the filter gravel retains its water conductive capacity, thus providing speedy and effective drainage of the subsoil.
■ TS offers excellent filter properties and is characterised by high
water permeability and optimized soil particle retention capability
even under high loads.
TS offers excellent long-term performance due to the use of
selected raw materials.
■ The production process (continuous-filament) guarantees the
consistent use of top quality materials.
■ Polypropylene is resistant to all the usual chemical and biological
substances found in soils and building materials. Polypropylene is
water insoluble and thus has no negative impact on ground water.
■ The polypropylene used for the production of TS is equipped with
a UV-stabiliser, which provides it with enhanced resistance to sunlight.

TenCate Polyfelt P – protection geotextiles
Product advantages and applications
P is the ideal geotextile for the protection of geomembranes.
■ P prevents direct contact between sharp stones and
a membrane. The combination of product density and
thickness reduces any stresses, which otherwise might
puncture or tear the membrane.
■ P reduces the harmful friction forces between drainage
gravel and membranes on slopes.
■ In-plane permeability of P facilitates water and gas
drainage.
■
■
■
■
Due to special production technology, P geotextiles are
ideal for protection purposes.
P geotextiles demonstrate high tensile strength at low
elongation. This means that the protective effect is better
retained under tension and membrane deformation under
load is reduced.
The high tensile strength of P geotextiles reduces the risk
of parallel slippage on slopes.
The production process allows the exclusive use of high
quality polypropylene only. This raw material is resistant
to all the usual chemical and biological substances in soil
and building materials. Polypropylene is water insoluble
and thus has no negative impact on ground water.
P is fitted with a special UV-stabiliser in order to provide
resistance to long-term climatic influences.
Applications

TenCate Polyfelt F – filter mats
Product advantages and applications
■
■
■
■
F is eminently suitable as a filter under
bank revetments.
F prevents the erosion of fine soil particles
due to waves and currents and thus
secures the stability of coastal and river
bank revetments.
F guarantees an exchange between
ground and open waters, thereby preventing a build up of hydraulic pressure
under the revetment.
F is simpler and less expensive to install
than mineral filters.
F can be used in nearly all types of
critical soil. By comparison, mineral filters
require adaptation to the soil conditions
prevailing in the respective bank.
F geotextiles consist of two layers.
The grey layer is designed as filter layer.
This both stabilises the grain skeleton of
the soil, while simultaneously allowing
water to permeate virtually unobstructed.
Filter behaviour is determined by the
number of constrictions (fibre layers).
Relatively thick geotextiles with over 40
constrictions tend to clog. Accordingly
the filter layer in F products has 25-40
constrictions, which is ideal for soil
retention and water permeability.
■ The blue layer is the protection layer,
which prevents damage to the filter layer
during installation and use. The comparatively large openings in the protection
layer ensure that filtration is not obstructed
and minimises the risk of clogging.

Product advantages and applications
Geolon PP woven polypropylene geotextiles
are characterised by an extremely high
stiffness modulus. This allows the attainment
of high strength at low elongation and
less deformation than in standard woven
geotextiles.
Other Geolon PP advantages include high
chemical and UV-resistance, as well the
possibility of making-up into large panels for
simpler installation.

Product advantages and applications
Rock PEC has been developed in order to
combine reinforcement, separation, filtration
and drainage in one product. The nonwoven
protects the yarns used for reinforcement
against damage and prolongs the long-term
life of the product. The high-tenacity polyester
yarns are characterised by low creep in
comparison with polyethylene and as a result,
Rock PEC permits cost-efficient designing.
14
PRODUCT CATALOGUE GEOSYNTHETICS
The combination of reinforcement and drainage
functions makes Rock PEC ideal for the reinforcement of soil structures, when mediumor fine-grain soils are to be used. These types
of soil are often locally available, but tend to
be susceptible to pore water pressure and
are therefore generally unsuitable for steep
reinforced soil structures. However, Rock PEC
offers optimum in-plane drainage capacity,
which facilitates the rapid dissipation of this
pore water pressure and thus increases the
shear resistance of the soil. In turn, this leads
to greater stability during the building work
and faster construction progress.
TenCate Polyfelt Rock PEC
Rock PEC also ideally combines a
diversity of functions in road and railway
construction applications.
■ The base course is separated from the
soft and possibly saturated subgrade, thus
preserving its properties, thickness and load
distribution capacity in the long-term.
■ The filtration and drainage capacity of
Rock PEC allows the rapid dissipation of
excess pore water pressure and thus rapid
construction progress. Besides, it prevents
migration (pumping) of fine soil particles
from the subgrade into the base course.
■ The high strength of Rock PEC stabilises the
subgrade while simultaneously reinforcing
the base course layer, which enables cost
savings on aggregate use because of
reduction of the base course thickness.
Rock PEC thus combines the advantages of
a separation and filter geotextile with those
of a geogrid.
■
■
■
■
Rock PEC provides the following advantages for road- and railway construction:
Longer construction life
Uniform bearing capacity in tandem with
reduced base course thickness
Minimum disturbance of the subgrade
Facilitation of construction on soft soils
Rock PEC products are flexible and easy to
install. Their surface structure and flexibility
ensure excellent soil interaction.

Product advantages and applications
Miragrid GX has been especially designed for
reinforcement of granular, fine to coarsegrained non-cohesive soils. It is an extremely
stable yet flexible geogrid. In tandem with
surface roughness, this flexibility provides
optimum interaction with the soil (increased
pullout and shear resistance) and costefficient designing.
16
PRODUCT CATALOGUE GEOSYNTHETICS
The use of high-tenacity polyester yarns
results in excellent creep resistance. In
addition, a high molecular weight makes
the yarns resistant to chemical attack (e.g.
hydrolysis) in the pH range normally
encountered in reinforced soil environments.
The flexibility of GX also facilitates the
installation process. It is easily cut without
the risk of injury on sharp edges and once
rolled, it does not recoil, as is frequently the
case with stiff geogrids.
TenCate Miragrid GX geogrids
Miragrid geogrids are frequently employed
in landfills in order to reinforce sealings
(mineral or synthetic liner) and prevent
slippage of the cover soil.

Shear resistance [kN/m2]
Above all, TenCate Miragrid GX is used for
the reinforcement of steep embankments,
support walls and bridge abutments. GX can
be integrated into a diversity of segmental
concrete block wall systems, in order to
ensure their stability. The connection of the
geogrid with the wall results primarily from
the friction generated between the fabric
and the blocks. Optimum load transmission
guarantees cost-efficient design.

Product advantages and applications
Envirofelt CO prevents surface erosion on steep
slopes and thus provides sustained support for
plant growth. The mat retains humus and
thereby assists the critical vegetation rooting
phase.
As a result of the natural decomposition of
the coconut fibres, Envirofelt CO also serves
as a fertiliser and thereby promotes plant
growth. The product lifespan of up to five years
guarantees an adequate rooting phase. Natural
vegetation can grow freely and then assume
the task of soil stabilisation.

TenCate Polyfelt Megadrain – drainage mats
Product advantages and applications
Megadrain is a drainage mat with high
water flow capacity under low to medium
loads.
■ Megadrain mats cut space requirements
and excavation costs. They offer the same
in-plane throughflow rates as conventional
drainage gravel, but at a considerably
reduced thickness.
■ The high drainage capacity of Megadrain
mats makes them especially suitable for
constructions with low gradients.
■ Megadrain mats are easy to install, one roll
replacing 15-20 t of gravel.
Megadrain mats offers first class drainage.
■ The controlled production process used for
Megadrain mats guarantees constant high
quality, which facilitates simpler, on-site
quality checks.
■ Both the HDPE core and the PP geotextile
provide excellent chemical and biological
resistance.

Prior to installation, the total effective tack-coat quantity of 1.2 kg/m2
is evenly applied across the entire
width of the geocomposite with an
overlap of max. 10 cm. The quality
of the tack-coat depends on the
climatic conditions and the type of
asphalt surface to be used.
4
Installation of the paving felt
commences once the curing
of the emulsion has begun.
Seepage is not possible due to
the small amount employed. The
PGM is laid onto the tack-coat
by unrolling using specially
designed laying equipment. Pretensioning is unnecessary.
5
In the case of surface treatment, a second tackcoat (B), consisting of parts B1 and B2, is applied:
• B1 is required to saturate the paving felt
(approx. 0.8 kg/m2 of 70% emulsion).
• B2 is needed to embed the chippings. The
quantity to be applied varies according to the
recommendations of the emulsion producer,
and depends on the quality, quantity, shape
and size of the chippings used, as is the case
with conventional surface dressing applications.
• Immediately after the application of the
emulsion on top of the paving felt, the required
quantity of chippings is spread evenly. This
is followed by compaction, preferably with
rubber-tyre rollers.
• In the case of double or multi-layered surface
dressings, it must be ensured that the tackcoat of the second layer bonds tightly with
the first layer.
• After a period of 1 - 3 days, any excess
chippings should be removed using suitable
road-sweeping equipment.
• In the case of spot maintenance, the paving
felt can be laid onto the uncured emulsion,
after which the surface is covered with sand
to allow traffic to pass on a temporary basis.
6
The asphaltic concrete (min.
thickness 40 mm) can be
installed immediately after the
unrolling of the PGM-G.
• The use of crawler-type pavers
is recommended.
•The temperature of the asphalt
mix may not exceed 160°C
during installation. This normally
corresponds to a mixing temperature of max. 190°C.
• At high ambient temperatures,
or if an excess of tack-coat
seeps through, sticking of
the tyres of the paver can be
avoided by spreading asphalt
mix or chippings into the wheel
tracks.

DESIGN PRINCIPLE
Designing is based on a comparison between the result of standard calculations for paving rehabilitation and a calculation using a socalled fabric effectiveness factor (FEF). The result of the comparison is the extension to the lifetime of the structure provided by the use
of the geosynthetic material.
The paving calculations are completed pursuant to Manual no. 17 (MS 17) of the US Asphalt Institute, or according to a combination of
MS 17 and the RVS 3.63 (Austria).
The FEF is evaluated with the help of laboratory testing (please see “Simulation testing of geotextile membranes for reflective cracking”
– Second International Geotextiles Conference, proceedings vol.2.
