K-Talk Radio
In the last two years I have started a new career by creating a K-‐TALK radio show. I am the host. We recognize and salute the achievements of folks who are over age 60 and who are “still makin’ things happen”. I call it the seasoned citizen’s program. From 1992 to 2012 I was a real estate agent, broker, entrepreneur and investor. The duplexes and other rental property I own, enabled me to take the time off to do volunteer work. My wife and I enjoyed teaching English to refugees in Utah and doing other Inner-‐City Project work which then evolved into generating publicity for the community activity centers which assist elderly folks. ROTARY WISDOM
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ― Mahatma Gandhi Guest speaker – Rich Dixon
It was public relations work and in turn led to an opportunity to start the radio show described above. For the previous thirty years, following my graduation from the University o f Utah in the 1960’s I was part of corporate America, holding sales and m anagement positions in Washington, Texas, Utah and broadcast-‐advertising California for firms including Bonneville International. My philosophy: Just as organizations such as Rotary have d one so many fine things in society and for persons, so too individuals can make contributions in society plus – along the way – help themselves to fulfillment and satisfying personal or leadership development. I have found experiences which people share with others can be inspiring and uplifting. I look forward to sharing some of these ideas. DISTRICT FIESTA 2015
FINAL REPORT FROM
PDG MIKE WELLS...
Thank you, thank you, thank you to Rotarians, family members and friends -‐ a total of nearly 750 volunteers -‐ who traveled at your own expense to attend our first ever "out-‐of-‐district" District Conference and to do 4-‐days of service in and for the people of Puerto Penasco, Mexico Much was accomplished during our week together. Here is just a sampling: ·∙ Built three two-‐bedroom, two-‐bath homes from the stage of empty pads to having all of the block walls constructed and roofs installed. ·∙ Finished, decorated and presented four other homes similarly constructed last December ·∙ Expanded the piñata factory, where young people with a wide range of disabilities (from blindness to cerebral palsy), are employed. ·∙ Worked with those employees to build 200 piñatas, then sold them to the volunteers to help fund programs at the piñata factory ·∙ In 4 days, organized a pop-‐up dental office, and treated 293 people who can't afford dental care. ·∙ Equipped a dialysis clinic, the first and only one in this part of Mexico ·∙ Donated an ambulance to the dialysis clinic ·∙ Landscaped the dialysis clinic to reduce dust and improve air quality inside the clinic to maintain a sanitary environment ·∙ Replaced a secondary school typing lab with a computer lab with 65 iMac computers, networked them, obtained internet access and set up a projector for instruction ·∙ Created a library for an elementary school ·∙ Set up a learning lab in the elementary school with 30 tablet computers, a hub, charging station and internet access for one year ·∙ Painted and fenced an elementary school ·∙ Donated two buses ·∙ Donated 1 ,500 pairs of glasses, including 800 pairs of sunglasses to people who work outside all day, including construction workers, oyster farmers and fisherfolk. ·∙ Provided dresses and shorts to m ore than 100 school children ·∙ Refurbished 50 school desks ·∙ Donated 2 00 toy cars to young students, one of whom reportedly asked, with tears in his eyes, "Did we get these because we were good?" It has been a genuine pleasure to serve as your District Governor (RY2014-‐15). Karlene and I thank you for your amazing example of "service above self" ... and we hope you had a good time in the process, because, after all, "if it’s not fun, you are doing it wrong!" http://www.utahrotary.com/home/all-‐
