Summer is officially here, and this one is a hot, hot summer! What better way to cool
off than swimming at the OCC pool. Parents, please take the time to go over the pool
rules with your kids. Also, parents please note that no children under the age of 12 may

From the President
Last month we completed
the 48th Annual Quarter Century Golf Tournament. Again,
it was a huge success. Despite
the drought conditions we are
currently experiencing, both
courses were in “very playable” condition and everyone
seemed to have had a good
time, whether they won or lost.
Congratulations to Shawn
Savage and Bobby Gee for a
Tim Peden
wire to wire victory.
President
Odessa Country Club is always saddened when we learn of the death of one of our
members. That was especially true this month as we became
aware of the deaths of our Members Peggy and Dick Glover,
Terry Arnold and C.H. (Skeezix) Martin.
Peggy and Dick had been long time members of Odessa
Country Club, having been members for more than forty years.
For many years, they played golf on a regular basis. During
these last years you could find them almost every day enjoying lunch in the Mixed Grill, or many evenings having dinner
with their children and grandchildren. Their friends, many of
them long time friends at Odessa Country Club, were special
to them. They will be missed.
Terry Arnold was only a member for a few short months, but
he leaves behind many friends at Odessa Country Club.
And where do you start to remember C.H.Martin - known to
his friends as Skeezix, a man that had been a member of Odessa Country Club for fifty years. There is no way we can begin to
tell you how much he has done for Odessa Country Club. Thru
the years, he served three terms on the OCC Board of Directors and was President of the Board for 1980/81. He served on
several committees and was one of the driving forces behind
the Odessa Pro-Am and a winner of the Quarter Century Golf
Tournament with my father in 1970. Until his recent illness, he
could be found in the Men’s Locker Room enjoying the friendship of many long time friends. He loved Odessa Country Club,
and he and his wife Beverly have always considered Odessa
Country Club their second home. Thank you Skeezix for all the
many hours of leadership you have given to OCC! The Odessa
Country Club is a better place because of you.
Please remember and pray for the families of our recently
lost members.
From the Manager
Our cover picture is the only
fireworks display at Odessa
Country Club this year. The high
fire danger and current drought
conditions are a major concern
for the entire region. With this
in mind, we will not have our
traditional fireworks display
on Monday, July 4th. However,
the party will go on. The Rio
Ryan George
Grande Band will entertain
General Manager
with live music. Our traditional
pool games and horseshoe tournament will go on as planned.
Make reservations for this “FREE” event.
If you have recently dined with us, you may have missed our
favorite mints in the lobby. This mint has been discontinued
by the manufacturer and is no longer available. Our plan to
select a replacement mint involves you. We will be sampling
different mints in the lobby for the next month. As you leave
the club, let us know your preference by placing your favorite
mint in the appropriate jar. The mint that receives the most
votes will become our new signature mint.
The Club has been blessed with many members enjoying
our dining facilities. Several times each week the Mixed Grill,
Cocktail Lounge and or Patio are full. Reservations not only
guarantee your family a table, but they are very helpful for
planning, and anticipating your service needs. Special menu
requests and non menu items take additional time to prepare,
and we appreciate your understanding this during these peak
times.
Stay cool, hydrated, and keep praying for rain. See you
around the Club.

Golf Shop News
It is hot and golf season is in full swing. Make sure to stay protected and wear plenty of sunscreen and drink enough water.
The golf shop has plenty of great shirts for the summer from
Peter Millar, RLX, Adidas, and Travis Matthew to keep you feeling
cool and looking stylish on and off the golf course.
We also have plenty of hats and caps from Titleist, Ahead,
and Under Armour to keep the sun out of your eyes on the golf
course this summer. We also have great shades from Oakley
and Maui Jim.
As always, the golf staff is more than happy to assist you in
any way we can.
From the Fairway
I would like to begin by thanking
everyone who participated in this
year’s 48th Annual Quarter Century
Partnership. This continues to be one
of the premier events in the state of
Texas and the staff of Odessa Country
Club and I are very proud to be
involved with this great tournament.
Clay Kinnaird
Director of Golf
Congratulations to Shawn Savage and Bobby Gee who won with
an impressive total of 196, as well as the rest of the flight winners.
This summer will continue to have plenty of great events for
both the men and women to play in. This month we have both
the Men’s Match Play Club Championship and the Women’s
Club Championship. The flight winner’s and runner-up in the
Championship flight for the Men’s event will qualify for the 2011
Midessa Cup being held later this year. In addition, The Odessa
Country Club Professional staff will be hosting a Women’s clinic
on the 9th and 10th focusing on teaching the fundamentals of
the “Power Game.”
We continue to welcome your junior golfers to take advantage
of the summer off from school on both the driving range and
the golf course. They are allowed to make times and play before
11am and after 2pm during the weekdays, and may also make
of the Permian Basin
times on the weekend after 3pm. We will continue to host our
monthly Junior Golf Camps, which will be held July 6th – 8th and

Jake McCullough, our Head Golf Professional, was recently certified in TPI Golf Fitness. He has since been working with and
training our other professionals about the relationships between golf and fitness. We now are able to put you through a fitness
screen that will evaluate your fitness level as needed for efficient golf. Then, if you are interested, we have a group of trainers that
we have been working with that can help you to get rid of your physical limitations. You will be on your way to better golf and feel
better throughout your day. For more information on this program, please contact a member of our professional staff.
Are you in this group? We have often heard the definition of insanity as repeating the same task while expecting different
results. For many people, this happens everyday when they go to the course. Golfers go to the course with a new tip they just read
in the latest golf magazine and feel like they have finally figured the game out. Only after a couple of shots they realize they have
not increased their proficiency at all.
Why are you not improving? Research shows that most golfers are not improving their ball striking abilities because there
bodies cannot perform the athletic motion due to some deficiency in their flexibility or stability. These limitations create swing
compensations that negatively affect the mechanics of the motion. Through research from TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) we
now know exactly how physical limitations affect golf performance.
What is TPI? The Titleist Performance Institute is the industry leader in golf health and fitness and they work with some of the
top golfers in the world. It has an advisory board comprised of an elite group of outstanding professionals in a variety of fields that
affect golf performance such as: medical, golf, fitness, junior golf, nutrition, biomechanics, and education. Through their research,
programs, and education, we are able to better understand exactly how a person’s body can affect golf performance.

OCC Ladies
Golf Association
Independence Day! What a glorious feeling that is. The Fourth of
July is always such a fun month for all of our lady golfers! Please ladies,
again remember our Play Day schedule. Sign up at 8:30 am or earlier
and tee off time is 9:00 am. Remember it is very hot out there on the
course. Drink plenty of water, or something you like to keep those
electrolytes flowing and keep plenty of wet towels to help cool your
body temperature down!
The Women’s West Texas Tournament was played in San Angelo this
past June at the San Angelo Country Club. What a fun and challenging course, and we did have a great turnout from OCC. We
had the best time, their members treated us royally. It is always so exciting to meet new friends to play golf with from all over the
great “State of Texas”. Also bringing home a winner is the very best part. That winner is Sandra Hill, Champion of the Second Flight.
Congratulation Sandra. Way to Play!
Well ladies, how proud are we of our team this year. We won the Challenge Match against Ranchland Hills CC on our Links Course!
Believe me, we are very proud.
By the time you are reading this article, we will have played our Parent-Child Tournament, and the OCC Ladies Club Championship.
Of course, the Club Championship will be one of the most exciting tournaments of the year. It’s a very challenging time when we
crown our very own champion of the OCC Women’s Golf Association. No doubt it will be big news, and heard throughout our Club
– way before the August Pipeline - maybe around the “World”; who knows? We will also have another Challenge Match with Green
Tree Country Club. This will be played at the Links Course, so girls “cross your golf clubs” that we win. Also don’t forget our Permian
Basin Play Day girls. The next one will be August 17th at Green Tree CC..
Let us remember some very important dates again: Guest Day, Old Course August 16th; and our very own OCC Summer Classic
August 23 – 25. Check all emails and bulletin boards. We will have Interclub Challenge Tournament at Green Tree Country Club
August 31st.

All American
Luncheon
Our June ladies luncheon was hosted by chairman, Charlotte Harris, (not pictured)
Anne Tilley and Sue Wikelski. We were all reminded how proud we are to be Americans
(and Texans, of course) with patriotic decorations and an All American menu. Charlotte
Harris loaned her beautiful red, white and blue animal carvings for the sign in table. The
tables were adorned with red, white and blue vases with American flags & stars, along
with cowboy hats spruced up with decorative ribbon and stars. The cowboy hats were
given as the door prizes to the following winners, as pictured: Evelyn Lafrentz, Patti Husband, Susan Parker, Doris Edmondson, Wanda Jones, Tody Oakley, Jamie Turner and Gloria
Lambert. We had a great American menu of salad, fried chicken breast, country gravy,
fresh vegetables and apple pie. Sue Wikelski gave her recipe to our fantastic pastry chef
Carol Ames who prepared it perfectly. Everyone raved about it!
Evelyn Lafrentz, Chairman, called the meeting to order by reminding us how thankful
we are to live in the great United States of America. We are also thankful to have a country club where we appreciate the opportunity to enjoy the many amenities
Chairman - Charlotte Harris & Sue Wikelski
that the club has to offer, opportunities to volunteer our time to make it the
best club around, and most of all thankful that we have such a great group
of people that make up our members. In memory of our dear members
that have passed on, we had a moment of silence. Our short business meeting included Dorothy Hall giving her Treasurer report and to let us know
that the ladies association is in good financial shape and will have enough
funds to carry us through the rest of the year. Evelyn thanked the hostesses
for another fabulous and festive luncheon and Sue Wikelski announced the
winner of the Sunday buffet was Shirley Klaus, and the $50 gifts were awarded to Dorothy Brooks and Starling Edwards. Evelyn asked if there were any
other reports. There was no old or new business to discuss and the meeting
was adjourned for games. The winners were: 1st High Linda Felts; 2nd High
Wylma Madden. Other winners were Frankie Sorenson, Frances Moore and
Sue Wikelski. Make sure to plan to attend the next luncheon on July 8th at
11:30 hosted by Ramona Thompson, Chairman, Marge Garner, Pauline Gage,
Wanda Jones, Dot Bates and Marie Robertson. We will have a program to
salute the colors by the JR. ROTC group from Permian High School.

and ½ cup grated Cheddar cheese. Mix in ½ stick or ¼ cup butter, melted,
and sprinkle the cheese crumbs over the apples. Bake the pie in a hot oven
(400º F) for 40 minutes, or until the topping and crust are golden brown. Let
the pie cool on a wire rack and serve it warm, topping each slice with a generous spoonful of sour cream. Serves 6 to 8.

1 ¼ cups chopped snickers candy bars
(about four bars)
For the topping:
1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/3 cup chopped peanuts

with hints of citrus and minerals. This pale yellow colored
Chard opens with a mild Clementine and Melon Bouquet. On
the Palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced, and easy to
drink. The flavor profile is a fruity blend with an emphasis on
peach and apple, with notes of lime and Clementine. The finish
is dry and subtle. This wine pairs well with sole, halibut, salmon,
poultry, mild cheese, and shellfish. You may enjoy this wine by
the glass for $7.00 or by bottle for $28.00.

Triple digits! What could be worse than not having rain? Going into summer with temperatures over 100 degrees each day. With
air conditioners running trying to maintain cooler temperatures indoors, the pool always is a quick way to feel refreshed and cool
during the heat of the day. I invite you to visit us here at the OCC pool to help relieve yourself of the hot days.
Working at the pool, one is always thinking about keeping everyone as safe as possible. With the heat as high as it is, we sometimes forget to hydrate ourselves while swimming. It is recommended that you increase your fluid intake regardless of your activity
level. A reminder to keep your children drinking as much fluid as possible with recommendations of 16 to 32 ounces each hour.
Kids are very active during the summer and never think about stopping to get a drink of water until they are just worn out.
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer no matter what you are doing or where you are. Please come visit us here at the pool
sometime this summer to relax and take some time for yourself.
POOL SAFETY TIPS

•
Don’t talk to lifeguards while they are on the stand.
•
Swim Diapers for those children still in diapers.
•
Drink plenty of fluids.

Golf Course News
As the drought of 2011 continues and the forecast for the rest of the Summer and Fall shows no
end of the drought in sight, we are continuing to implement golf course maintenance programs
to assist us in having good greens, tees and fairways. The fairways on the Old Course continue to
struggle with good consistent turf quality as the sodium levels continue to increase. The high sodium (salt) in our irrigation water, along with the drought, has provided us with many challenges
to overcome. We will continue to manage these conditions, much like we do on greens and tees,
with applications of Hi-Calcium Lime and Gypsum that allow Calcium (Ca) to replace Sodium (Na)
in the soil along with heavy irrigation or hopefully rain to leach excess sodium out of the root zone.
Excess sodium in the soil dries out roots and binds up the soil that prohibits water penetration,
therefore the leaching of the salts (sodium). Calcium replaces sodium in the soil, aids in turfgrass
Greg Hinton
wear & heat tolerance and improves watering infiltration and efficiency. Sodium, at extreme levels,
Dir. of Golf Course Maint.
which we are reaching at the Old Course, can cause severe turf damage which we are experiencing
on portions of #18 fairway and the chipping area at the practice range. We will continue Lime and Gypsum application along with
spiking to help improve these problem areas.
There are a few things you may experience while playing the golf course, things which we are doing to help the turfgrass survive
the drought…slight increase in greens and fairways mowing heights (higher mowing heights promote deeper and healthier root
systems), ropes & stakes and signs to restrict and direct cart traffic (please observe, this is critical for turfgrass recovery), consistent
spiking of Old Course fairways to promote salt leaching, therefore turf recovery, irrigation heads running during the day as we continue to check for proper operation of heads and hand watering of greens.
One special note! As our irrigation needs continue to increase and our irrigation water source stays the same, we will be
restricting irrigation to the roughs which will allow us to focus
better irrigation/watering practices on greens, tees and fairways.
The roughs will begin to show increased stress and discoloration.

Sign-up for the GCM Weekly Update @ [email protected].
Tip of the Month: Drought management practices for our
golf courses and your home lawns and landscapes. The keys
to managing severe drought conditions now and into the future are as follows: pick the correct plants and turfgrass that can
handle future drought conditions, always apply large amounts of
Calcium based products (Lime & Gypsum at 8-10 lbs. of product
per 1000 square feet, monthly) to displace salts in the soil, apply
potassium based fertilizer (last number on the bags analysis at
1-2 lbs. potassium per 1000 square feet per month in the growing season - potassium promotes root growth and drought tolerance within the plant), avoid excess nitrogen (first number on
the bag), heavy mulch in landscape beds (3-4” deep), apply heavy
amounts of composted organic matter or fertilizers (they provide
moisture retention and root growth, and have a low salt-index) to
your lawns and beds and finally water heavy & deep and less frequently, this promotes deeper roots…these are all practices we
try to accomplish on the golf courses, but we have 369 acres, you
may have 1/8050th of that, so good gardening. Observe all city
water ordinances!

In the last few months, we have had some
great events in May. We fnished off with
our Memorial day event. We had several
participants and everyone enjoyed the fruit
kabobs. Then, on June 6th the following
weekend, we had a duel with the ladies
from Lubbock. After some great tennis in
the morning, the ladies were treated to a
luncheon. All of our guests really enjoyed
our food and loved our club house! On the
16th of June, we had our Round Robin & Hambuger Cook – Out. Our event started and the temp was 110 degrees, so it was
probably 120 on the court, but everyone survived the heat. After three sets of
tennis everyone was ready for burgers, beers, and brownies. I would like to thank
Ryan, Eddie, and Justin for their great service on all these events. Thanks Guys!
Members, please stay hydrated when you come out and play tennis. Make sure
you have plenty of sunscreen and wear a hat at all times.
