AQUATIC PROGRAMS - PRE-SCHOOL & RED CROSS SWIM KIDS
Starfish (4 to 12 months) / Duck (12 to 24 months)
Starfish: An introductory class for babies and their parent or caregiver. To enter this level,
babies must be able to hold their head up. The goal of this orientation to water class is to
experience buoyancy, movement, entries, along with enjoying songs and play in the water.
Duck: For toddlers or older babies with a parent or caregiver. Learn how to use floating
objects for support and explore different water movements through games, songs and
active water play.

Swim Kids - Level 2
This level helps the child build skills in front and back swims. Children are introduced to
deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Endurance is
built on flutter kicking with assisted aids.

For toddlers with a parent or caregiver. Swimmers learn through fun games and songs.
Combine skills like how to kick with a buoyant object, perform basic floats, glides and kicks.

This level provides and introduction to front crawl and diving. Children will work on floats

Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop
basic floats and glides, along with swimming 1 metre. They also learn age-appropriate water

The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed. Children
work on kneeling dives, surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety by
understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25-metre swim.

Children will learn assisted floats and glides, through games and songs. The fun includes
learning to jump into chest deep water.

Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try
stride dives and receive an introduction to safe boating skills. Endurance is developed
through dolphin kicking and a 50-metre swim.
Preschoolers work on stroke and skills progression. Learning also focuses on good
judgment in, on and around the water, entries and floats in deep water.

This is an entry level for children ready to move in shallow water. This level provides an

Crocodile: The beginning of independent glides and kicking in deep water happen in Crocodile. Endurance is built through longer front and back swims. Swimmers learn about

Whale: Children will learn to swim independently to increase their distance and improve
skills in both front and back swims.

Front & back crawl continue to be refined as the elementary backstroke is newly introduced. Children are also introduced to safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with
throwing assists, treading water and the front dive. Endurance is built through a 75-metre
swim.

Level 7: Building skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back
stroke and introduces whip kick on the front. Children learn about airway and breathing
obstructions, and participate in timed treading water for increasing endurance. Endurance
is built through timed treading water and a 150-metre swim.
Level 8: Introduction to the breastroke, foot first surface dives, and rescue entries. Children learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, and the performance of rescue
breathing on children and adults. Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and 300-metre
swim.

Swim Kids - Level 9 & 10
Level 9: Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be
refined. In this level children are encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks
for fitness. They also work on head-first surface dives and standing dives and learn about
wise choices, peer Influences.

Swim Kids 9/10 Continued
Level 10: Further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a
warm-up/cool down stroke for fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from
the ice, and head-first and feet first surface dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick and
butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim.

PRRA Leadership Courses
Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI)
This course further develops instructional ability by focusing on how to apply the information learned in the AWSI Course to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim
continuum (Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids and Aqua Adults programs). Candidates apply their teaching skills and knowledge during 12 hrs. of practical teaching experience.
Prerequisite: AWSI and minimum of 15 years of age
Red Cross Babysitter's Course

This course focuses on teaching participants the essential skills needed to be a responsible child-care giver and the steps necessary to take in emergency situations.
They will be armed with the proper knowledge and will feel confident when it comes to
the needs and safety of children of all ages. Upon successful completion of the
course, participants will receive a Canadian Red Cross babysitter's certificate.
Bronze Medallion (CPRB) includes Emergency First Aid & CPRA
Bronze medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in
the four components of water rescue - education - judgment - skill and fitness. Provides both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the lifesaving techniques
of rescue breathing and emergency care.
The PRRA offers access online
for our customers to register for programs including
swimming lessons and leadership courses.

Tried of slippery sidewalks and other
unpredictable weather conditions?
The Viterra Fitness Centre is 4000 sq. ft. filled
with user friendly equipment to challenge you! If
you are a beginner or novice there is everything
you need to achieve success, resulting in healthy
and active lifestyle!
The Portage CO-OP Walking track offers a
comfortable setting for a walk or jog with 210
metres of impact absorbing track. With two
one metre-wide lanes, the track can
accommodate users of all ages and abilities.

The Walking Track is available free of charge

Your Experience Playing
Ultimate Frisbee (so we can do
our best to create well rounded
teams)
You will be placed on a team and will
play for 4 weeks. Register as an individual or as a group (if you wish to
play on the same team as someone
you know). On September 14th and
21st, come at 6:00pm to review the
rules of the game and learn how to
play from experienced players. Cost
is$15. If you make at least 3 of the 4
games you will get a free
Frisbee on the last night.
Bring payment to the first game.
