From the Chair
DTD Names New
Executive Director
Paul Withrow joins Deliver the Dream as
Executive Director after more than 18 years
of experience in the not-for-profit arena.
Rick Catlett
Chairman of the Board
President, Gator Bowl Association
Deliver the Dream has appointed Paul Withrow as
its new Executive Director. Paul will oversee day-to-day
operations while working closely with the foundation’s
Board of Directors in its efforts to raise awareness and
funding for its family retreat
program. In addition, he will
work closely with the
organization’s Medical
Advisory Board and will be
instrumental in building
relationships and
partnerships with friends
and community supporters
of Deliver the Dream.
As I prepare to finish my tenure as Chairman of the Board, I do
so with a sense of pride and realization. Throughout the years,
I have always felt the most important responsibility I have held
has been to serve as an advocate for the voices of each and
every donor who have graciously entrusted their dollars to
fulfilling the mission of Deliver the Dream.
My transition gives me an opportunity to reflect on the
organization’s many accomplishments and reinforce that
Deliver the Dream has had some very defining achievements.
Successes that have occurred as the result of a passionate
staff, hardworking volunteers, and most importantly, because
of generous donors like you who have allowed us to continue
our efforts.
Commenting on the
appointment, Deliver the Dream
board chair elect Jim Kelleher said: “We are delighted to
announce this appointment. Paul’s insight and varied
experience will be a valuable addition to our
organization.”
Since 2002, Deliver the Dream has been honored to have more
than 2,700 family participants attend a healing family retreat
where they were able to begin the process of reconnecting
again after facing a crisis or serious illness. Mothers, fathers,
brothers and sisters…families facing many hurdles, were given
the opportunity to rebuild a trust and faith in one another,
rekindling a confidence that together they could face and
overcome anything!
Paul is proud to be a part of Deliver the Dream and its
mission and looks forward to making an impact on the
organization’s ability to help families to regain strength,
mend spirits and just be families and kids again. “I am
delighted to have an opportunity to play a role in the
ongoing success of this very important organization.
I look forward to sharing Deliver the Dream’s message of
hope and healing with the many donors, volunteers and
the public who support the families we serve with their
time and financial resources.”
In February of this year, Deliver the Dream celebrated its 50th
Family Retreat at River Ranch. This milestone event in our
history was graciously underwritten by a grant from our valued
corporate partner Wachovia and provided a healing retreat for
patients and their families from Chris Evert Children’s Hospital.
For those in attendance, the weekend was incredibly moving
and successfully representative of our mission. We really are
changing lives and I will be honest, we are all looking forward
to our 100th family retreat celebration - the day will be here
before we know it!
Most recently, Paul served more than four years as
the executive director at the South Florida Chapter of the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Previous to that
he spent nearly five years as a regional director for St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Paul graduated with a
bachelor’s of science in Communication from Clarion
University of Pennsylvania and resides in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
To help us get there, I ask you to continue your generous
support of Deliver the Dream’s purpose. Please use the
enclosed envelope to continue your support by making
a tax deductible gift to our program. Consider asking your
company to sponsor a retreat weekend. Ask your co-workers
to get involved by volunteering at one of our many
retreats. I promise you, it will make an impact on everyone
who participates.
Finally, I have been truly privileged to have had the honor to
serve in a leadership role for Deliver the Dream. I want you to
know…because of you and many others like you, we will never
be limited in our ability to help the children and families who
need us most. If this is the legacy of my Chairmanship then I
leave knowing I’ve done my job.

New Healthcare Partnership Welcomed
Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida has now joined the list of not-for-profit
partners working with Deliver the Dream to refer families for our specialized retreat program.
Deliver the Dream is proud to announce its partnership with Wolfson Children’s Hospital of
Jacksonville, Florida. Through this new alliance, Deliver the Dream is looking forward to delivering
hope, strength and joy to north Florida families that have children with a life-threatening illness or
who are experiencing a crisis.
Founded in 1955, Wolfson Children’s Hospital is a regional referral hospital serving infants and
children. It is the only children’s hospital in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Known for its
state-of-the-art clinical facilities, Wolfson Children’s Hospital has extensive partnerships at leading
research and specialty clinics in Jacksonville. Due in part to its strong commitment to children and their individual needs,
the hospital was placed 16th on "Child Magazine's" Best Children's Hospital survey in 2003.
Wolfson Children’s Hospital recently referred families who have a child with Spina Bifida to attend a retreat May 3-6, 2007 at
the Sandpiper Resort in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Larry J. Freeman, Administrator of Wolfson Children’s Hospital, commented:
“We are thrilled and honored to partner with Deliver the Dream to help north Florida families. Our first group of special
needs families who have children with Spina Bifida will be enjoying an upcoming weekend of fun and activities. I’m sure all
of the families and kids will have an exciting and uplifting weekend.” Our friends at Wolfson Children’s Hospital are already
looking forward to their next retreat scheduled for early 2008.

The facilities at Cerveny are modern, but keep

of Cerveny by our DTD families, volunteers and
staff is Mandi’s Chapel, where DTD holds a nondenominational reflection time for families to
think about what they experienced and the
memories that were made throughout the
retreat.
Cerveny held its first retreat for DTD in
November of 2005 for families referred by
Nemours Children’s Clinic. Since then it remains
one of six venues DTD uses to carry out its
mission. The next retreat at Cerveny Conference

Thanks to the generosity of our many sponsors and donors,
this year’s Jeans and Dreams Gala was a tremendous success
netting more than $200,000 for Deliver the Dream.
96.1 WEZJ radio and Angela Spears of First Coast News returned
as the event’s co-emcees, while comedian/magician Michael
Finney pleased the crowd with his hysterical comedic routines
and illusions. Nearly 500 business leaders and community
supporters dressed in their best denim for an evening full of
dining, laughter and dancing.
Co-chaired by Elizabeth and Jack Diamond and Beth and Jim
McCague, and presented by Invision Industries and Southern
Manufacturing, the event was held March 3 at the scenic
Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Spa in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Of the net proceeds, more than $75,000 was raised during the
live and silent auctions. Travel packages were a huge hit this
year with bidding highlights including $10,600 for a trip for two

autographed guitar by country music star Craig Morgan, a NASCAR Nextel
Cup Race experience for two, a pair of David Yurman earrings, and two
catered dinner cruises aboard Jacksonville area vintage yachts, the Halcyon
and the Casa Mia.
The funds raised will allow over 250 Jacksonville family members facing a
medical illness or crisis to attend a Deliver the Dream retreat – free of

be families again. Deliver the Dream is thankful for all those that
supported this year’s event. We
extend our sincere appreciation to our
generous sponsors, volunteers, and
guests for your continued support
and commitment!
Amy’s aunt, Jennifer Lee, executive director of the
National Multiple Sclerosis Society North Florida
chapter, was on hand to excitedly claim the prize
on Amy’s behalf. Jennifer quickly pulled out her
cell phone and called her niece to tell her the
exciting news. With the crowd’s encouragement,
master of ceremony Arthur Crofton of Lite 96.1
WEJZ radio suggested Jennifer put Amy on speaker
so that all those in attendance could listen.
He personally told Amy the good news. “You are
kidding! No way!” Amy shouted, not believing
she was the winner. “It’s incredible, I can’t believe
this is actually happening,” Amy said.
With leadership from the Jeans and Dreams Gala
committee, nearly $40,000 was raised through the
charity raffle. This raffle was made possible
through the generous support of Southeast Toyota
Distributors, LLC, a major sponsor of the annual
Jeans and Dreams gala. Deliver the Dream would
like to extend thanks again to each of you who
participated in this year’s raffle.

Our Deliver the Dream Experience
Deliver the Dream family shares personal story of strength, hope, and renewal at Jeans and Dreams Gala
On November 30-December 3, 2006, the Maynor family
attended the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Retreat Weekend
at River Ranch in Lake Wales, Florida. The weekend was
for families who have a parent with cancer. From airboat
rides, to arts and crafts, to a live rodeo, this weekend was
full of fun! The opportunity for their family to spend time
together, relax and reconnect was more than they ever
dreamed possible. They met several families coping with
different aspects of cancer, and although the diagnosis
was different, they found that they all had things in
common and were able to learn from each other. It was
especially wonderful for the children to speak with other
kids that had a parent going through cancer treatments
and hear how they were dealing with it.
(l to r) Matt Maynor, Pat Moran, and Amy Maynor
at Jeans and Dreams Gala.
Matt and Amy Maynor, parents of a Deliver the Dream
retreat family, shared their family experience as part of
this year’s Jeans and Dreams Gala. Though not an easy
story to tell, both were very excited at the opportunity to
share their DTD experience and compassionately spoke
of Matt’s diagnosis with leukemia, his struggle with
treatment and finding support, and finally the opportunity
to attend a DTD retreat.
Today, the Maynor family is energized and invigorated
because of their Deliver the Dream retreat. They now go
on more bike rides and are more active. They understand
that cancer is a diagnosis, not a way of life. They also
know that while there may be more treatments for Matt,
there are people out there ready to support their entire
family.
It was over a year ago after a routine physical that Matt
first learned there was a problem with his health. He was
called in for a follow-up appointment and the worst he
thought he would hear was that he had high cholesterol.
Instead his doctor told him the heartrending words that
he had cancer, specifically leukemia. With his pregnant
wife due in just a couple weeks, and two bright young
children, Bryce, 10 years-old, and Amy, 7 years-old,
awaiting the baby’s arrival, he couldn’t dare tell his family
the bad news. It wasn’t until six months after his baby
girl Abigail was born that he told the family. It was
devastating to everyone, but even more so to Matt.
Matt and his family continue to stay well connected
to the Jacksonville area and are very active in the
community, volunteering for the Leukemia Society, the
Gator Bowl, the TPC, their church and other community
charities. In fact, Amy was on the steering committee for
the annual “Bag Ladies Lunch” and fundraiser for the
Leukemia Society.
The Maynors are very appreciative of Pat Moran and the
DTD Staff for their unique experience. All of them hope
to one day volunteer for a DTD weekend, to give back to
those who helped them in their time of need.
Over the next several months, he started undergoing
treatment at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer
Center in Houston and Shands Hospital at the University
of Florida in Gainesville. It was extremely trying for him
and his family as he experienced severe side effects from
his treatment including nausea, fatigue, and joint, bone
and muscle pain. But the toughest part for Matt was not
being able to do the regular activities that he loved to do
with his family. The activity that stands out for him most
was riding bicycles with his son Bryce. He just didn’t have
the energy that he had been used to.
We thank Matt and the rest of the Maynor family for
sharing their experience with all the attendees at the
Jeans and Dreams Gala to benefit Jacksonville
families facing illness or crisis. And we wish them all
the best in the future!
Another struggle that the Maynor family faced was
finding support from other families going through the
same diagnosis. Due to Matt’s young age and his rare
type of leukemia, there was not much out there for him.
He didn’t let this stop him. He spent many hours
researching organizations that could possibly assist him
and his family with this illness. When Matt discovered
Deliver the Dream, he was immediately embraced by
program director Susan Bellomy. He was delighted to
learn of the DTD program and that he and his family
would have the opportunity to participate.
