COATED ABRASIVES
Abrasive wheels are actually thousands of
abrasive grains bonded together to form a
single cutting tool. As the wheel contacts the
material, the exposed grains begin to cut
and grind material away.
As the wheel grinds, the material fractures
the surface of the grains, exposing new
cutting points. It also wears away the bond
between the grains exposing fresh grain.

Eventually the surface grains are consumed.
The old grains are released as the bond
wears away, and new grains are exposed.
This process continues until the wheel is
completely consumed.

Coated abrasives are a single layer of abrasive
grain bonded to a backing.
As the grain contacts the material, it starts to cut
and grind the material away.

As the grains grind, they fracture to form new
cutting points extending the life of the abrasive.

When the grains fracture to a point where they
are no longer exposed above the bond,
the abrasives will no longer effectively remove
material and should be replaced.

STRUCTURE
Very flexible and open non woven base structure is coated with abrasives grains.
This open structure prevents loading and reduces heat build up.
As pressure is applied, some of the pressure makes the abrasives contact the work piece and some is absorbed by the flexibility
of the non-woven structure. This allows for the abrasive to conform to the shape of the surface, giving a more uniform finish and
a finer finish in fewer steps then with coated abrasives
As the grain breaks down, the base structure also wears away to expose the nest layers of grain until the abrasive is consumed.
TYPES OF ABRASIVE GRAINS
Aluminum Oxide
Tough durable grain used for cutting, grinding and finishing of metal in bonded
abrasives, and metal, wood and coatings in coated abrasives
Treated Aluminum Oxide
Aluminum oxide grain with a coating that increases bond strength for harder longer
lasting bonded abrasives
Zirconia
Tough durable grain with fine crystal structure used for rugged stock removal of metal
in bonded abrasives, and metal and wood in coated abrasives

Ceramic
Tough durable grain with very fine crystal structure to create many more cutting
edges in each grain. Used for the highest stock removal of metal in bonded and
coated abrasives
Silicon Carbide
Very hard and brittle grain used on concrete and very soft or very hard metals in
bonded abrasives, and for very fine finishing of metal and coatings in coated abrasives
Diamond
Very hard and durable grain for use in cutting and grinding concrete and metal

DEWALT® utilises an industry recognised colour coding and identification system to help users identify the right bonded abrasive wheel for their
application. There are also several other key identifiers to look for on a wheel; RPM’s, wheel size, thickness and arbor size to ensure the correct
product is used.
