Norman’s works are about motion, rhythm and mystery. She creates translucent,
surreal surfaces punctuated by color and light. She says of her work, “I enjoy
the tension that emerges when formal design meets fantasy. That tension invites
the image and the viewer to interact, to enter into a dialog.”
Menagerie presents an eclectic
collection of art and fine craft depicting
or inspired by animals, in a broad
range of media.

Note
Dear Friends,
Thank you for all of your support and for
being a part of our community this past calendar
year! Because of you, we ended 2015 with cause
for celebration.
Our class participation is stronger than ever, once
again confirming the value of the service we provide,
the dedication of our students, and the quality
delivered by our very talented instructors.
The Minnesota State Arts Board awarded an
impressive $67,000 grant for operations, and the
National Endowment for the Arts awarded two
$10,000 grants to support our work at the Ridgedale
Center. These grants affirm our work and help
make it possible for thousands of Minnesotans
to experience the profound transformative effects
of high-quality art experiences.
Our annual campaign contributions continue to
arrive at a brisk pace. Many thanks to all of you who’ve
responded! So far, 48 donors have given nearly
$50,000! We need to raise $100,000 by March 1 –
an ambitious goal, achievable only with your help!
Tax-deductible contributions may be made by mail,
in person or on our website. Your important gifts
help keep our programs affordable and accessible to
the widest possible audience. Without them, our
work could not continue.
On the Exhibit front, our Arts of the Holidays Show
was another unprecedented success! At this writing
and more than halfway through the sale, we are
well on our way to what we expect will be another
record-setting year. The artists provided amazing
work, well priced and perfect for gifting, and the
staff and volunteers did an incredible job of creating
a magical shopping experience. Congratulations to
the artists and my thanks to all you shoppers! This
sale is a great way to support our local artists and
give a little something to the Art Center at the same
time (60 percent of the proceeds from this sale go
directly to our artists).
All in all, 2015 was a pretty fine year. How fortunate
we are to have such a supportive and engaged
community!
I hope you enjoy this issue of Visually Speaking and
that you’ll celebrate the coming Spring season by
spending some time at the Art Center.
Best regards,
Roxanne L. Heaton

OUTREACH
Northwest Suburban Conference High School Day
For 17 years, the Northwest Suburban Conference
(NWSC) of high schools has sponsored a full day of
art at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. Last April,
multiple school buses pull up to the front door unloading
140 enthusiastic students ages 16 to 19, representing 14
different schools, for a 6.5-hour day at the Art Center.
It’s a day dedicated to making art and a chance for
students to work with professional artist-instructors
in mediums or projects not available in their schools,
according to Kevan Nitzberg, art teacher at Anoka High
School and one of the founders of the event.
The Minnetonka Center for the Arts cancels its classes
and opens the building and studios exclusively for these
high school students. Every spare space is used to offer
a full range of experiences, including the chance to:
• Experiment with glazing and experience the raku
firing process.
• Create colorful fused glass objects, dishes or jewelry.
• Carve 3D plaster molds and create pewter sculptures.
• Study professional watercolors in the gallery and
practice new techniques in class.
• Learn innovative acrylic painting techniques and
try new surfaces.
• Create a comic strip with a nationally-published
illustrator.
• Experience life and figure drawing with live models.
• Design and print original designs using silkscreen.
• Sculpt a ceramic caricature or self-portrait.
This is a life-altering, transformative experience for some.
Discovering that professional art centers exist and that
art can be a life-long career or avocation is an invaluable
awakening that occurs for many participating students.
“The big thing about this event is that the students get more
art time in one day than they would have in a week or two
of school. They can relax and inhabit the activity,” says
Artist-Instructor Bob Bowman, who has taught ceramics
and raku firing during several of these annual events.
“Professional artists talk about being ‘in the zone’ when
they reach a mental state in which their concentration
is deep and their work seems to flow along effortlessly.
This full day of art is the students’ chance to get a sense
of what that’s like.”
The Minnetonka Center for the Arts has been the site of the
NWSC art event for 17 of its 19 years because of its ability
to deliver a full spectrum of visual arts classes and the
facilities to host this sizable student population. Nitzberg
believes the breadth and depth of the Minnetonka Center
for the Arts youth programming and understanding of this
age group makes it an attractive destination.
Ten students attend from each of the participating schools:
Andover, Anoka, Armstrong, Blaine, Centennial, Champlin
Park, Coon Rapids, Elk River, Irondale, Maple Grove,
Osseo, Park Center, Spring Lake and Totino-Grace
High School.
Another benefit of the day is the rich exchange of ideas
that occurs as students see the artwork of teens from
other schools, work side by side with them and experience
learning from not just teachers but each other. NWSC
art teachers observe students opening up more easily and
ideas flowing more freely after the event.
Outreach is an essential aspect of the
Art Center’s mission. If your school district
is interested in a similar art experience,
please contact Nicole Buchholz, Children
and Youth Program Director at
[email protected].

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Kathleen Michaelson
“My father always said you don’t retire from something,
you retire to something,” says Kathleen Michaelson as she
enters her second year on the Minnetonka Center for the
Arts’ Board of Directors. Considering retirement as her
third career, Kathleen keeps current, attending seminars
and staying involved with professional groups. She applies
these new skills with those acquired in her first career
as a banker and her second career in nonprofit
leadership in her service on the Board of Directors.
“Kathy’s past role as Director of Finance for the Minnesota
Humanities Commission makes her a valuable asset to
the board,” says Executive Director Roxanne Heaton.
“I appreciate the relevant information and industry trends
she shares with me and her perspective as an experienced
nonprofit professional.”
Considering the severity of the last economic downturn,
Kathleen is impressed with how well the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts navigated those years. “Some didn’t
make it, but the Art Center weathered it with a core
group of staff, students and community partners,”
says Kathleen. “Now we can look ahead and start on
the vision for the next 20-30 years. What I hope is that
the Art Center continues to grow its programs because
the visual arts are so important to us as emotionally
healthy individuals.”
She also applauds the exhibits program, which offers
a wide range of free exhibits in the Art Center gallery,
thoughout the building and at Ridgedale Center, because
it attracts diverse audiences and makes visual arts
accessible on a very broad scale.
With an undergraduate degree in design and a passion
for quilting, Kathleen has practiced sketching, painting
and weaving at different points in her life. With two grown
children and two grandchildren, she currently lives in
Chaska with her husband who is a senior site supervisor
for Habitat for Humanity.
STAFF SPOTLIGHT Melinda Alves
It’s time to come back to the Art Center Café! Under new
management since last April, Chef Melinda Alves shares
her culinary creativity in a deliciously varied new menu
each week, all made fresh from scratch.
A graduate of culinary arts from St. Paul College, Melinda
managed Café Bon Appétit at the Minnesota History
Center for four years. Melinda developed great organization
skills and honed her focus on flavor as she planned weekly
menus that included vegan and other dietary options,
managed the kitchen and controlled costs.
“It was my first management position out of culinary school
and a really good base because Bon Appétit expects you to
make everything from scratch. If you don’t know how to
make it, you better learn or find a recipe fast!” says Melinda.
Everyone in Melinda’s family cooks, and both her grandfathers
were butchers. Love of food and flavor runs in the family
but also surrounds her with critics, she admits ruefully.
Perhaps that’s why she loves the Art Center’s community
of artists so much. “Artists seem to appreciate it when a
plate looks pretty and that’s really gratifying,” she says.
The freedom and flexibility of a changing menu lets
Melinda be inspired by what’s fresh at the grocery store
or farmers markets. For students, here for weekly classes,
it provides something new to look forward to. While
standard deli-style sandwiches are always available,
each week’s menu includes a hearty, hot entrée plus
a homemade soup, feature sandwich and salad that
may be enjoyed individually or paired in any combination.
And then to top it off, there are the fresh-baked muffins
and cookies!
“I want the Art Center Café to be a place you can find
something really good to eat no matter what your dietary
restrictions,” says Melinda. “Ultimately, I want the food to
match the level of quality that the Art Center delivers across
the board.”

CALLIGRAPHY
Kristine MacDonald
Skill level: ALL
Make your writing beautiful whether
addressing cards or adding poetry to your
paintings. In this class you will learn
Copperplate script, a style of calligraphy

pointed pen nib that allows variation in
thickness through pressure and release.
Begin by learning the lovely traditional
Copperplate letter forms and then push
them into the 21st century by altering the
letter shapes to make them funky and
current. Materials included.

EARTHENWARE:
BUILDING A SURFACE
Kristin Pavelka
Skill level: AB, I, AD
Earthenware clay is forgiving, the low-fire
color palette is infinite and the firings are
economical, making this type of pottery
creative, easy and accesible! Explore
multiple ways to build up interesting
surfaces during each stage of the making
process: wet, leatherhard and bisque.
You will learn a variety of slip decorating
techniques, how terra sigillata can enhance
the surfaces and how to layer glaze to
create depth. In the last class, we discuss
the finished pots, providing good feedback
and ideas. Both wheel-throwers and
handbuilders welcome. While geared to
earthenware, the techniques in this course
will benefit ceramicists working in all firing
ranges and clay varieties.

This class will explore every artist’s
dilemma: how subject matter and its
selection are the core of a successful end
piece. Working in oils or acrylics, we
will look at how subject matter can be
manipulated to enhance the success of
a final piece without losing its original

BEGINNING DIGITAL
PHOTOGRAPHY
Abstract photography creates mood
and/or feeling without portraying
recognizable objects or scenes. In this
class you will experiment with ways to
carry photography beyond realism by
playing with scale, removing contextual
information and photographing through
water or other clear materials. You will
explore shadow, blurring techniques and
exposure times in order to find your own
personal expression and design aesthetic.
Color, contrast and composition will be
examined through weekly assignments and
in-class reviews. Bring a digital camera and
examples of your work to the first class.
This class will take beginning photographers through the fundamentals of digital
camera use. Learn basic operating procedures including manual settings, picture
resolution, focus and zoom options. You
will also learn how to email, print, file and
edit your digital images. Please bring your
camera and manual to class. Optional, yet
highly recommended, class workbook is
