AGRICULTURAL SEED
MERCHANTS 2016
Welcome to our 2016 Catalogue
Welcome to our 2016 catalogue which I hope you will all find of interest. I’m sure you will also notice that this
year we have gone back to a stapled booklet rather than a loose leaf folder, which seemed to spill out on the
floor every time you opened it!!
With the ever changing EU rules we managed to place all of our Spring Contracts much earlier this year and most
were placed by early October. I can’t remember us ever having a filled order book so soon – well done to Kit.
I am pleased to announce James Todd will be joining us in early
February, assisting us with sales. James has worked in the industry
for several years where he gained much experience and Kit and I look
forward to working alongside him. James is married and lives locally
in Suffolk.
It has been a very busy season cleaning all varieties of seed this year.
With a kind harvesting season, we experienced good yields with
excellent germinations.
The photographs below we hope you find of interest/tonguein-cheek! For those in the know this was a ‘daily habit’
of the previous generations, which Kit and I
very occasionally enjoy!!

Peas
Exporting, Canning, Picking, Maple & Vining Peas & Seed Treatments
Church of Bures is actively involved in the production of 19
different varieties and supply over 40 different varieties of peas
each year.
Traditionally Maro has been the forerunner in terms of total tonnage.
As maintainers of the variety the company grows the Breeders seed
in single acre plots which are inspected and rogued four times during
the crop’s development. This enables us to produce and supply the
cleanest stocks of Maro available in the world.
Church of Bures is the UK agent for Pure Line Seeds Inc. Pure Line are
plant breeders who have been producing world-class quality vining
peas for over 60 years. As well as importing the seed from the USA,
we also produce seed in the UK. Growing contracts for vining pea
seed are available and have proven to be a very lucrative break crop.
Church of Bures, are the owners and maintainers of Minerva maple
peas. We have been growing this variety for many years and together
with our involvement with the marketing of Swift maple peas our
market share is now considerable in the pigeon pea seed industry.

PEAS, EXPORTING, CANNING, PICKING & MAPLE PEAS
Exporting and Canning Peas
Maro - By far the longest surviving variety in this sector as other
varieties ‘come and go’. The Japanese market for pea snacks is pretty
consistent year by year, and with a tried and trusted variety such as
Maro we have customers who always come back for more knowing
they will receive a product that works for them every year.
The processors and the grocery trade favour Maro also, as it has little
or no soaking problems. Typically, it will receive higher premiums
on farm than any other marrowfat, and, as the variety maintainers,
Church of Bures will ensure you get the purest and highest quality
seed available in the country. Maro is also an excellent variety for the
sprouting trade abroad, as it is a full leaved variety.

Clovers
RED CLOVER
Red Clover normally produces two main cuts and a small autumn cut.
Most early varieties are traditionally known as Broad Red or Double Cut
Clover. It is a useful component in the short-term grass mixtures for silage,
haylage, etc.
Essex Broad - Church of Bures, are the maintainers of Essex Broad
and still grow the variety in Essex. It is a 100% UK native variety in which
we have specialised for a number of years. Produces heavy yielding hay
and seed crops. It also provides a rich quality growth and leaves excellent
soil fertility.
WHITE CLOVER
White clover is a low growing high tillering plant which is a very important
constituent of our long term leys. In our mixtures we blend two varieties
this enables maximum benefit in terms of flexibility to most multi
purpose leys.
Church White Clover Blend - This is a blend of medium and
large leaved white clovers which will help bulk the grass for cutting and
grazing with excellent mid summer production without artificial fertilizer.
50% Large Leaf Clover
50% Medium Leaf Clover
CRIMSON CLOVER
Crimson Clover is a good choice for smothering weeds, fixing nitrogen
and is a fast growing bulky green manure. It has deep roots that penetrate
the soil, a mass of foliage and when ploughed in helps to improve the soil
structure. It will also produce lovely crimson flowers that are very attractive
to bees and other beneficial insects.

YELLOW SWEET CLOVER
Fast to establish biennial legume. Can sow from May onwards, strong
rooting plant which improves soil structure.
CLOVERS & SMALL SEEDS
Small Seeds
FORAGE RAPE
This is a most useful crop and can be sown at any time from March to
September providing food from Autumn to Spring.
Broad Leaf Essex - More Winter hardy than English Giant and
slightly shorter.
English Giant - Broad-leaved variety and selected for its hardiness.
Immense growth and a large broad leaf.
WINTER & SPRING OILSEED RAPE
Oilseed rapes are constantly being improved with new varieties coming
onto the market each year. It is impossible to catalogue all the available
varieties that we can offer, however, we welcome your enquiries.
BORAGE
This is a cobalt blue flowered herb, said to have been introduced into
Britain by the Romans, but is now considered to be indigenous. It is a fast
growing annual completing its full growing cycle in about four months.
The plants are very robust and hardy and with its rapid growth rate, it
tends to smother out most weeds. Borage flowers attract both wild and
honey bees in very large numbers. Sown in the Spring at 8 kilos per acre
and swathed in July when seed-drop is imminent, this oil crop will thrive
on most soil types.
MUSTARD
Tilney - This variety produces high green weight matter up to flowering.
Church of Bures are the sole maintainers in the UK for Tilney Mustard.
It has excellent standing ability and produces large volumes of green
matter and residual fibre. There is a leaflet available from us, which offers
all the necessary information.
VETCH/TARES
Vetches are very important in UK agriculture. They form an essential part
of any green manure mixture as their leafy plant is ideal for ploughing in
to improve soil humus and structure. Arable silage mixtures also benefit
from the inclusion of vetches.
English Early - Its nitrogen-fixing properties and ability to smother
weeds due to its dense foliage make this an ideal part of the organic
conversion process. As a leafy and leguminous plant it is an excellent cost
effective crop especially on organic farms.

Marrow Stem - A valuable crop suitable for the dairy herd coming off
grass for the autumn. Has a thick stem and large nutritious leaves.
Thousand Head - Although it is not as palatable as Marrow Stem Kale,
it is more leafy and frost resistant. Provided it is not over-mature or grown too
large, cattle will eat the stem completely.
Graded Seed H - 1.75mm-2.00mm. For use with Stanhay Belt No. 7.5 or
8 Webb Selector Wheel B.
Graded Seed J - 2.00mm-2.25mm for use with Stanhay Belt No. 8.5 or
Webb Selector Wheel C.
When seed is graded, it becomes uniform in size thus easing precision drilling.
If you would like graded seed, please enquire when ordering.
FODDER BEET
A crop for cattle as it produces high dry matter yields with high energy values.
It is suitable for producing high quality feed in areas where forage maize is
unsuitable. It tends to be more drought tolerant than swedes and turnips. All
Fodder Beet varieties are pelleted in 1 acre boxes.
Kyros - Yellow intermediate type. Heavy yielding and with strong top. Roots
grow well out of the ground.
Magnum - Very high yields and dry matter, easily harvested by sugar beet
machines. White rooted beet.
MANGEL

Field Beans are one of the world’s most important legume crops and
world production exceeds four million tonnes per annum.
There is a substantial usage of small, uniform round-seeded tic beans in the
diet of racing pigeons in the UK, Belgium and Germany. Maris Bead is a tic
bean that is used in this market. Maris Bead is a Church of Bures variety
having been purchased from PBI. The input costs for growing tic beans are
not necessarily greater than for animal feed. The crop must be harvested
and dried very carefully. Tic beans should not be harvested less than 15.516.0% moisture where possible or dried at high temperatures because these
conditions cause seed to crack and split.
SPRING BEANS
Maris Bead - This is a Church of Bures variety. The round seed is small and

Conservation
The existing Environmental Stewardship schemes in England (ELS, HLS and
OELS agreements) will be succeeded from January 2016 by a new Countryside
Stewardship scheme. This will incorporate elements from Environmental
Stewardship, the Woodland Grants Scheme and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
Existing agreements will still be managed until their agreed end date and it is
expected that many of the options and mixtures that have been used in these
previous schemes will form part of the new scheme.
In addition to this, many of these mixtures can be used to meet certain Ecological
Focus Area (EFA) requirements following the latest CAP reforms.
We can supply a range of excellent standard mixtures as detailed or can produce a
completely bespoke mixture to suit your specific requirements please contact us to
order your personal mix or for more information.

CONSERVATION
ARABLE REVERSION
Conservation, Greening and EFA’s
WILD BIRD MIXTURES
Conservation mixtures are now commonplace in the countryside. This is part of APHA’s
commitment to restoring farmland bird numbers as stated in the Biodiversity Action
Plan. The acceptable mixtures must contain plenty of seed producing plants such
as quinoa, millet, sunflower, cereals etc. These mixtures provide a bird table of food
throughout the winter months that will help the vulnerable farmland birds and so
reverse the national decline.
These mixtures can also be used to fulfill some of the EFA’s under the new rules. For
more information contact us at the office or for a detailed insight into the new schemes
visit the campaign for the Farmed Environment. www.cfeonline.org.uk

This mixture is selected to feed the wild birds and encourage an increase in their
numbers.

WILD BIRD SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING
Wild bird seed crops produce a large amount of food for farmland birds throughout
the winter. As the weather deteriorates however, their ability to provide a reliable
supply of seed becomes less. This is when it is important to ‘top up’ that shortfall with a
supply of key seeds to give the birds a reliable food source through until the Spring.
Supplementary feeding provides additional feed from December through to the
Spring alongside existing wild bird seed cover. This ensures that when the cover crop is
depleted of seed, the birds can then switch to the supplementary feed.
We can supply an excellent range of either ‘premixed’ seeds to meet growers
prescribed requirements, or we can supply them as ‘straights’ for those who wish to
mix their own.

Bag size is typically 25kgs or we can pack into Big Bags.
CONSERVATION, GREENING & EFA’S
GREEN MANURE MIXTURES
These are becoming more popular all the time as they have 2 very important roles.
They add organic matter to the soil and make nitrogen available to the following
crop. Typical ingredients used are Red Clover, White Clover, Phacelia, Mustard, Vetch
and Rye. This can also be made up of Rye, Vetches, Italian Ryegrass and Minerva
Maple Peas.
GREENING AND EFA’s
Following CAP reforms the Single Payment Scheme for farmers was replaced from
1st January 2015 for a Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) This scheme contains mandatory
greening requirements, which will account for around 30% of the
total payment.
One key aspect of this scheme is the so called ‘3 crop rule’ whereby farmers with
more than 30ha of arable land that are not exempt are required to grow at least
three different crops with the largest crop not covering more than 75% of that arable
land. This has triggered a higher demand for growing pulses, which can also offer an
alternative break crop to oilseed rape. Please contact us for more information about
the options with pulses and see the relevant sections within
this brochure.
Another key aspect of the scheme is the introduction of Ecological Focus Areas (EFA),
which dictates that any farm with over 15ha of arable land that are not exempt must
ensure that an area equivalent to 5% of the arable area be EFA. There are five options
that can be used in combination to fulfill the EFA area requirement but these options
are not all weighted equally whereby some will require a larger or smaller area to
count as a hectares worth of EFA. Options are: Hedgerows, Buffer Strips, Fallow,
Nitrogen Fixing Crops and Catch/ Cover Crops.
Full detailed information on all aspects of the new schemes can be found at
www.gov.uk/cap-reform.
Some of our standard seed mixtures are EFA compliant as outlined but we are also
able to produce completely bespoke mixtures to your particular specification. At
Church of Bures we are placed extremely well to cater for these demands as we
produce most of the crops ourselves.
Please contact us to discuss all your requirements.

Conservation, Greening and EFA’s continued
BUFFER STRIPS
Weighting: 1m in length= 9m2 EFA
(i.e. you would need to have 1.1km of buffer strips to count as 1ha EFA)
Buffer strips must be next to a watercourse and be a minimum of 1m width. Grazing and
cutting is allowed, if the strip is temporary grass, but there must be no crop production. You
can use the same buffer strip required for cross compliance as an EFA also.
• Use Church’s General Purpose Wildlife Mixtures or create your own mix to include wild
flowers or legumes.
In field buffer strips parallel to watercourses are also permitted and can be sown with wild
bird mixes or nectar sources- use Church Wild Bird or Pollen and Nectar with Grass.
FALLOW
Weighting: 1m2= 1m2 EFA
(i.e. 1ha fallow land will count as 1ha EFA)
To qualify the fallow period is on arable land from 1st January to 30th June in the
same year. The minimum area is 0.01ha and must have a minimum width of 2m.
Temporary grass, wild bird mixes and pollen and nectar sources can be sown but
these cannot be harvested or grazed.
• Use Church Wild Bird, WM1, Nectar Rich or Grass Margin mixtures.
NITROGEN FIXING CROPS
Weighting: 1m2= 0.7m2 EFA
(i.e. you would need to sow 1.4ha of nitrogen fixing crops to count as 1ha EFA)
Nitrogen Fixing Crops must be in the ground between 1st May and 30th June, and have be
a minimum of 0.01ha in area.
A full list of eligible nitrogen fixing crops is available at www.gov.uk/cap-reform and there
are three classes available: arable leguminous crops, pasture legumes (without grass) and
mixed legumes (where all of the crops are considered to be individually leguminous).
• Use Peas, Beans, Vetch, Lucerne, Sanfoin, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Clovers.
CATCH CROPS AND COVER CROPS
Weighting: 1m2= 0.3m2 EFA
(i.e. you would need to sow 3.3ha of catch/ cover crops to count as 1ha EFA)
Both Catch Crops and Cover Crops must have a minimum area of 0.01ha and consist of a
mix of at least two different eligible cover crops and be a minimum of one cereal and one
non cereal crop. Any percentage mix can be used as long as there is sufficient ground cover
and at least two different crops are visible.
A catch crop must be established by 31st August and retained until at least 1st
October in the same year.

Kale - Traditionally this has always been the most popular game cover crop. It stands
well throughout the season and its broad leafy plant with thick stems provides the
perfect game cover. Underneath the plants is a bare floor, which is ideal for pheasants
especially when hand fed. Thousand Head is popular due to the large number of broad
leaves and Marrow Stem’s thick stalk creates an effective umbrella type canopy.

Wild Flowers
CONSTABLE MIXTURE
This all purpose wild flower mixture is unique to Church of Bures. It provides a stable way of
establishing a beautiful meadow using attractive native species and has been formulated to provide
a wide range of strong UK native flowers. The Constable and Gainsborough Mixtures give excellent
variety and colour throughout the flowering season, from April through to October. The mixtures
will not only delight the eye with their rich diversity but will also prove very attractive to butterflies
and other insects.
Since enhanced soil fertility will have an adverse effect on the persistence of Wild Flora by
encouraging more aggressive grasses, clovers with their atmospheric nitrogen fixing properties
have been omitted entirely from the mixtures.

The Gainsborough wild flower mix has been formed to include less species than the
Constable Mix, however there are far more seeds of each wild flower specie included. This
improves the chance of establishment especially in areas where the soil is quite fertile and
the grasses are allowed to grow quickly and dominate. This is a beautiful mixture which is
completed by the attractive non-aggressive meadow grasses.

LAWN GRASS
Almost all the different amenity grasses we use in our mixtures are in the top ten varieties listed
by The Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI). Each cultivar is selected by us to ensure their all round
performance regarding tolerance of close mowing, shoot density, fineness of leaf, cleanliness of
cut, winter greenness and the ability to grow strongly after mowing.
Dwarf Perennial Ryegrass - This is our best selling amenity grass. Its main attraction
being its low cutting frequency with good persistence and stability which makes it
ideal for many different grass situations at a low price.
Brown Top - This is the finest and highest quality grass which makes it an essential
component for a first class lawn.
Chewings Fescue - A very fine fescue which is distinguished by its strong root and
sward development. It has excellent tolerance to frequent close mowing and has a low
rate of leaf increase which makes it an ideal mixing component with other fine leaved
varieties.

Creeping Red Fescue - This fescue is perfect for amenity mixtures as it fills out the
bottom of the sward and helps to keep a good colour in summer thus making it an
essential ingredient for excellent lawns.
Rough Stalked Meadow Grass - Requires moist conditions and thrives on strong soils.
Suitable for tough-wearing situations.
Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass - As a drought resister this is very valuable under dry
conditions. It is suitable for shady areas and has thick shoot density for good ground
cover even when mown very short.
These top quality amenity grasses can be blended to form mixtures tailor-made to suit your own
special requirements for all situations i.e. golf greens, tees and fairways, horse gallops, car boot
fields, playing fields, air strips and runways, road side verges as well as different mixtures for low

AGRICULTURAL GRASS
Cocksfoot
Cocksfoot produces high yields in late summer and is suitable for use as autumn keep in November
and December. It is sometimes used as a special purpose grass on the drier, free-draining soils of East
Anglia. It is often used in strips of cereals to provide habitat for aphid eating beetles. Early varieties are
available with high yields at first conversion cut.
MEADOW FESCUE
An excellent hay type, which is also good for early grazing.
ITALIAN RYEGRASS
These grasses grow quickly and early for a short duration. They provide the bulk of hay and under
suitable management, continuous grazing.
WESTERWOLTH RYEGRASS
Fast growing, useful for quick cropping, patching of leys and building up humus in orchards.
TIMOTHY
High yields with a very good first conversion cut at 67D. Excellent ground cover and mid-season
digestibility.
PERENNIAL RYEGRASS
These vigorous grasses are durable, long lasting and tiller well. They form the basis of most pastures
and their root capacity makes a big contribution to soil humus and thus soil fertility.

HAYLAGE MIXTURE
Haylage is simply forage that is baled at a higher moisture content than dry hay and then stored
in a sealed plastic wrap. Because of the high moisture level and air tight environment, the forage
ferments and is preserved by acid production during fermentation. A big advantage of this is
obviously the decreased curing time needed from cutting to baling which makes weather less of
a factor.
