A LITTLE THIs, A LITTLE THAT . . .
It is hoped that when other members learn of such tall tales or even
slight coloration of truth, they pass it on to me to get clarification or
validation of the allegations. I will be more than happy to set the story
straight, correct any misinformation and inform you what is known
about the issue. You might recall the old party game Telephone where
something was told and as it went from teller to teller it morphed into
something far removed from the original. An incident can gather additional baggage in each retelling.
RUMOR HAS IT
In my job as your business representative and in my day-to-day
experiences I am often subject to hear many things about our members and jobs being done. Some of what I’m told is complimentary,
some outrageous and some other down right derogatory. I strive to
not be prejudicial. From an early age I learned to not believe everything I am told and become guilty of a rush to judgment. Taking it all
in and not making a decision until all facts be known. Truth is found by
seeing for yourself what has occurred and deciding the validity of the
claim. To only believe what you know to be true. I also learned not to
pass on and spread rumors or gossip be they true or false .I’ve known
of situations where members spoke of other members as passed
away, retired, working on a show or relocated out of state when in fact
they are alive, still an active member living in the area and looking for
work.
I recall a situation while hiring additional help for a large extra call.
While discussing some prospects on the availability list, another costumer said some really derogatory comments about a member listed.
Since I knew of both the member in question and the other costumer
with whom the informant had been confused. I corrected the misinformation and truth about the real source of the story. I admonished the
tattletale to not repeat what is heard but if they must be repeated at
least get the names right. Another point to ponder is you never know
the relationship between the listener and the implicated subject. They
could be best friends and the future employment ship you sank might
be your own.
I would venture to guess that there is scuttlebutt and untruths about
us all. I’ve had members related to me stories about my supposed
antics on projects I never worked or flings with people I don’t even
know. I’ve found humor in these instances. I have no gauge to judge
how these tales have affected my costuming career. It’s hoped some
might have caused me the loss of work, while others might have
helped. The scales being balanced. This is not to say that the retelling
of these situations either true or not is acceptable or can be condoned.
Idle gossip can damage a member’s reputation, career and livelihood.
You can never tell what damage an idle comment even told in goodnatured jest can create. The uninformed listener can misconstrue and
get a totally false impression or retell it with parts left out or confused. During World War 2 to prevent Allied shipping from Nazi U-boat
attack the slogan “Loose Lips Sink Ships“ became popular. In our case
“Loose lips can crash careers.”
We live in an age of social media. People most indiscriminately passing
on erroneous information in a nanosecond. That 140-character tweet
or face book entry can garner thousands of hits in an instant. Be careful what is posted, you never know the after effects of its worldwide
range. In my biological family we might reminisce and tell tales about
cousins or blood relatives’ .We are family and understand the context
of these recollections. In our 705 family this subtext is not always
available to understand what is being told. Be also aware that the
same people to which these rumors are being told, might advise someone to not hire the teller because they are a busybody, who likes to
gossip and diss other members rather than performing the work for
which they have been hired.
For the livelihood, reputation and career of your union brothers and
sisters take a minute before speaking about others. Ours is a highly
competitive field. We continue to gain employment by reputation.
That reputation should be one of a great costumer not a great gossip.
For your own well-being and prosperity make sure the ship sunk is not
your career. Remember each of us represents our craft and our Local.
Let us be known for our professionalism and skill not for tattling and
gossip. Let us be known by others, who say – Those costumers, they
stick together and always do the best, free of drama and unnecessary
conflict. Costuming a skill and craft of which to be proud. Local 705, a
union family of which to be to be proud. WE ARE 705.
Follow this homily – ‘’If you can’t say anything positive, don’t say anything at all” – and make it a rule to live by. These thoughts might be a
cliché but, like most clichés, truth can be found in them. It can be
argued that some untruths are spread by members who knowingly
pass on hearsay and unfounded rumors. I’m aware of at least one
example of a member being the subject of a poison pen e-mail being
circulated. I hate to believe this but unfortunately it can be true. I only
ask that any member indulging in these practices take a minute and
realize the possible consequences of dispersing these erroneous statements. The damage caused to the subject of these falsehoods in reputation and possible employment. As to the sender when identity is
discovered, what carnage have they caused to themselves, the victim
and our Local as a whole. Is our craft to be known as busybodies who
indulge in petty gossip and character assassination?

EXECUTIVE BOArD MEETING MINUTES
Sister Bohatila presented a donation and event request from
Design Showcase West for their upcoming luncheon. Sister
Nancy Grossi made a motion for a table of 10 at Design Showcase West for $1000.00. The motion was 2nd and passed unanimously.

EXECUTIVE BOARD

Sister Bohatila presented a donation/event request for the UCLA
Labor Center 2016 Banquet. Brother John Van Hout moved to
buy two tickets to send Bob Iannaccone and Catherine Wall to
the UCLA Labor Center Banquet for $400.00. The motion
was 2nd and passed unanimously.
CALL TO ORDER/APPROVAL OF MINUTES
President Nickolaus Brown called the monthly meeting of the
Executive Board to order at 11:02 a.m. and asked for approval of
the Executive Board meeting minutes of April 2, 2016, the New
Membership Committee meeting minutes of April 2, 2016,
and the General Membership meeting minutes of April 9, 2016.
Sister Nancy Grossi moved to discuss the minutes. They were
2nd and approved unanimously.
BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT
Brother Iannaccone presented a donation/event request for the
Heartbeat of Hollywood Golf Classic. Brother Iannaccone
explained the event and made a motion we spend the $1700.00
to play as we have before. The motion was 2nd and passed
unanimously.
Brother Iannaccone brought up the topic of legal fees for recently
dismissed charges against him and excused himself from the
conversation. Sister Deborah Ash moved to have the Local
cover Bob’s legal expenses. The motion was 2nd. Discussion
ensued. Brother Van Hout moved to table and was 2nd. The
vote failed 5-4. The original motion passed 6-1.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
President Brown reported on conversations with members and
our need to engage members and to give them a voice. Brother
Brown relinquished the Chair to Vice President Debby Curtis
and moved to request that we adopt the recommendation from
the Vision Quest Survey in the Transparency and Accountability section (page 36) to create an anonymous suggestion box on
our web site. This will inspire trust in 705’s leadership and
thoughtful conversation within our Local. These suggestions
should be published on the website, giving our members confidence that we are listening to their needs and making positive
changes as a result. The motion was 2nd and discussion ensued
about creating the proper procedure for addressing suggestions
to be discussed at the next Executive Board meeting. The
motion as amended passed unanimously.
CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS COMMITTEE
REPORT AND PRESENTATION
Sister Bohatila presented in the absence of Constitution and
By-Laws Chair-person Jeffrey Schoenberg and read the recommendation from the committee. Sister Curtis excused herself
from the conversation. Sister Bohatila handed out the new
proposed language. Sister Ash moved to accept the proposal to
amend our Constitution and By-Laws making the Vice President an automatic District 2 delegate. The motion was second.
Discussion ensued. Brother Iannaccone voiced concerns about
the District 2 Constitution & By-laws and will check with the
District 2 Secretary-Treasurer to be sure we are in alignment.
Sister Grossi moved to table the motion to the next meeting. The
motion was 2nd and passed 7-2. The Executive Board Thanks
Jeffrey Schoenberg and the Committee for all their hard work.
Brother Brown took back the chair.

ASST. BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT
Sister Bethany Jane Bohatila went over the monthly financial
reports with the Executive Board and discussed the various
expenses the Local accrues during the year with yearly audit and
accounting expenses and Production Alerts for the year. Sister
Bohatila explained the member’s dues line item is high because
members are paying them on time. The Local is doing pretty
well this year with increased membership and diligent members.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
The business of job descriptions from the office staff was still
pending. The Executive Board expressed their Thankfulness to
the office staff for all their hard work. Brother Van Hout
moved we have President Nickolaus Brown get Thank you cards
for each of the office staff on behalf of the E-board. The
motion was 2nd and passed 9-1.
Sister Bohatila updated the Executive Board about the Young
Workers Conference and explained that the conference was
filled to capacity before the application due date so Local 705
young workers will not be going this year, but we will try again
next year.
Sister Bohatila reported the email poll of the Executive Board
for a donation and tickets to the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor Cinco de Mayo Celebration was passed 7-1 for
two tickets for $200.00 total.
Sister Bohatila presented a request for a donation to Project
Angel Food. Brother Bob Iannaccone moved for a donation of
$500.00 to Project Angel Food. The Motion was 2nd and
passed unanimously.

The Executive Board discussed the moving of the August Eboard meeting to Saturday, August 13 and the board agreed to
the date change.

Sister Bohatila presented a proposal from Education Chair-person
Renee Nault to continue the Day-checking class. Sister Bohatila
moved to grant the Education Committee the funds needed to
teach the Day-checking class in April and October after the
General Membership meeting at $500.00 per class. The motion
was 2nd and passed unanimously.
January 7, 1931 – April 19, 2016
Florence, as she was known, began her career as a
milliner at Ice Capades in 1971
and later worked for Western Costume.
She retired in 2001.
Brother Brown relinquished the chair and Sister Curtis continued
the meeting. Brother Brown presented and moved to request,
per the recommendation from the Vision Quest survey in the
modernization section (page12), that we ask the Constitution
and By-laws Committee to repeal the classifications of Male
Finished Costumer and Female Finished Costumer and combine
them into one gender neutral classification, Finished Costumer
in an effort to erase sexism and unintended anti-trans-gender
language from our Constitution.

A member since 1955, He is best known for his
long-term partnership with Bob Mackie & Ray
Aghayan at EC2 during the heyday of Live TV.
Ret ‘s credits include
Sonny & Cher and The Carol Burnett Show.
Discussion ensued and Brother Iannaccone moved to table the
motion until legality can be determined. The motion was 2nd
and passed unanimously.
Brother Brown took back the chair.
Sister Bohatila presented and moved to request, per advice from
the Vision Quest survey i.e.: the members, that the Local 705
Technology/Communications Committee create a proposal for
an initial social media presence for the Local 705 by officially
taking over and utilizing our Facebook page and creating Twitter
and Instagram accounts on our behalf keeping in mind the
Local’s security at all times as well as monitoring for content not
suitable or appropriate to our Local with limited administrative
access to those accounts to be brought to the Executive Board to
be vetted before launching. The motion was 2nd. Discussion
ensued and the motion passed as amended unanimously.

Sister Carmen Lozano voiced her concerns for the security of
our Local’s offices. She moved to look into installing security
system/surveillance for the office at a minimum of 4 cameras,
2 upstairs and 2 downstairs covering both the interior and
exterior to protect the staff and the building. The motion was
2nd and passed unanimously.
ADJOURNMENT
Sister Bohatila moved to adjourn. The motion was 2nd and the
meeting of the Executive Board adjourned at 12:55 p.m.

President Nickolaus Brown called the Special Membership meeting to
order at 11:25 a.m. at the Local 80 Stages.

Brother Brown turned the meeting over to the Local’s Lawyers Hope
Singer and Lisa Demidovich.
Ms. Hope Singer reported that the meeting was because there have
been charges from one member against other members. She explained
that no details of the charges would be read at this meeting. The
members charged are Executive Board members so Ms. Singer consulted with the IATSE national office and was instructed how to move
forward. She described the process of the trial and choosing five trial
board members and 2 alternates.

to the process claiming not everyone had received the email blasts notifying members of the meeting.
The proceedings were handed over to the office staff to hand out pre
numbered ballots. The ballots were filled out, collected, and counted.
The following members were chosen for the Trial Board (in no specific
order): Amy Elise Roberts, Adam West, Radford Polinsky, Mitchell
Kenney, and Jeffery Schoenberg with Bill Edwards and Leo Castro
chosen as alternates.
