Breast Surgery Combined with Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction
by Charlotte Rhee, MD, F.A.C.S., P.C.
Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that can occur after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can grow to uncomfortable proportions or just the opposite can happen. A woman’s breast can
actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the breast appearing “deflated.”
Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with the
post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin and abdominal wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can
protrude and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can be so
weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite daily workouts including
sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed to restore these muscles.
ing breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their
body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed
to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast lift
is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a breast
reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed.
Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures.
Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the
same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast reduction or augmentation,
combined with tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. For those patients

Where did you grow up?
I’m a Long Island girl! I grew up in East Meadow and have
lived in Great Neck since 1978. I received a B.A. from LIUCW Post College.
You left a VP job at a large Long Island non-profit to work in
the field of autism.
My identical twin sons, Alex and Jamie, are severely autistic, non-verbal and have very challenging behaviors.
About six years ago, we discovered that they were gifted
runners. Even though they cannot speak, they can run …
and fast! They’ve competed in almost 100 national mainstream marathons, including Boston, Marine Corps and in
the Hamptons, and they’ve been featured in many publications. More than 80 trophies and medals adorn our
home, and my sons have inspired me to become an avid
runner, too. I now run in races along with my husband and
sons. As a breast cancer survivor, this has had a profound
impact on my lifestyle.
Tell me about the school you founded.
In 1995, there were almost no schools on Long Island exclusively for children with autism. As co-founder of the
Eden II Genesis School, I was determined to have my sons
educated in the best program to maximize their chances for
success. We began by raising money and opened the school
with just two classrooms and 12 students. Today, the Genesis School is one of the premier schools on Long Island,
with 32 students in the school program, 16 young adults in
the adult program, and serving more than 60 students in
the Genesis Outreach Autism Center.
In 2008, you co-created the “Blazing Trails 4-Autism” fourmile run in Great Neck.
Yes, the run has now become one of Long Island’s premier
grand prix road races, attracting more than 1,000 runners
from Long Island and the metropolitan area. We have raised
well over $100,000!

Menopause and Skin Care
What You Need to Know
To say that menopause changes your life is an understatement. Hot
flashes, decreased sex drive and night sweats can become an uncomfortable fact of life. But, when menopause is written all over your face, literally, due to dry, flaky or even acne ridden skin, is when the menopausal
experience really starts to set in, depress and confuse, many women.
Menopausal women experience a decrease in estrogen, leading to unexpected changes in the skin. As the amount of oil produced by the skin
drops dramatically, a more wrinkled and creased appearance is the result.
“The failure of estrogen production at the time of menopause accentuates intrinsic aging, and together with photo aging, this may dramatically
increase the apparent age of a menopausal woman,” explains Rolanda
Johnson Wilkerson, Ph.D. Senior Skin Scientist at Procter and Gamble.
“Estrogen deficiency can particularly affect the skin. Thinning of the skin
can be a part of this and is primarily related to a decrease in the production of collagen which can lead to the decrease in skin’s elasticity.”
This decrease of oil production brought about by estrogen loss is more
noticeable on the face rather than the rest of the body because of the
high number of estrogen receptors surrounding the area. Women can
also expect reduced production of collagen, delays in wound healing,
thinning of the skin, decreased hydration and the slower creation of new
blood vessels – all making skin seem years older. The texture and even pigment
in the face may seem to alter, leading some to want to
completely revamp their skin care process.
“The notion that, ‘I have used this product since I
was young, it should still work for me’ is not true.
It is necessary to take an assessment of the skin at
varied time points in our life to understand our skin
condition and if we need to alter the products we use
based on our growing skin care needs,” expresses
Wilkerson. “Our skin begins to lose elasticity in our
early twenties, so with this fact in mind, we can conclude that the 20’s is not
too early to use skin care products that address aging skin concerns (like loss of
elasticity and the need for miniaturization and sun protection.).”
While there is no way to erase wrinkles without surgical magic, there is a way
to reduce their severity and slow the formation of new lines. Moisturizing, exfoliating, incorporating products with collagen as well as daily use of sunscreen
are simple steps to care for pre and post menopausal skin. Always remember,
aging is a fact of life, looking your age, is not.
Aging is a fact of

age, is not.
Moisturize
The tight, itchy feeling of dry skin used to be something felt only during the
heart of winter. Aging skin, however, gradually loses its ability to maintain hydration, not just on the face but on the entire body as well, causing that irritated
and parched appearance year round. Water, since it is what the skin is craving,
should be listed as the first ingredient on the product label. Products that have
water, petroleum, lanolin, and mineral oil, as primary ingredients are also helpful,
as this will promote maximum hydration. When caring for the skin, remember to
think of the skin on the face, neck and chest as one unit, so care for them equally.
“Dry skin is a common skin concern for menopausal women so a rich moisturiz10r-0/(*4-"/%80."/rMay 2012
er is essential. Look for ingredients like shea butter as well as avocado, sunflower
and olive fruit oils to lock in hydration levels and help rejuvenate and revitalize
aging skin,” recommends Dr. Howard Murad, Founder of Murad, Inc. and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine (Dermatology), UCLA.

L’Oreal (19.99).
Exfoliate
It is common to hear that exfoliation is important. But what is it and why does
everyone want you to do it? Exfoliation is relevant, not just skin on the face, but
for the entire body because it removes dead and dry skin cells, promotes collagen
production and brings oxygen to the skin. Every 28 days skin naturally sheds and
produces a fresh layer of cells. With age, this shedding process, called desquamation, slows down leaving fine lines, dry areas and an uneven skin texture.
“Exfoliating takes off dead skin that acts as a barrier, so that moisturizers and
treatments can penetrate better,” explains L’Oreal Paris Consulting Dermatologist, Dr. Gervaise Gerstner.
By gently exfoliating, either with a mild face or body wash, luster is restored giving a more youthful glow. It is best to exfoliate once or twice a week to prevent
irritation or remove healthy living cells. Exfoliation also gives skin the ability to
thoroughly absorb moisturizers and other skin products.

Estrogen has a very powerful role in the promotion of our human elastic glue,
known as collagen, which literally holds our skin in place. Collagen is a supportive protein structure of the skin and has elastic type fibers that provide the ability

to recover from environmental stressors and fight the signs of aging.
Look for products that encourage an increase in collagen production,
as this will help fill out the skin keeping a plump, youthful thickness.
Key ingredients should include Renova, Tazorac and Retin-A, which are
all names for prescription grade vitamin-A. These are the holy trinity for
collagen-building creams in the skin.
“Skin loses 1% of its collagen every year once we are adults so by
the time you’re in your 50’s your collagen levels are pretty depleted,”
according to Dr. Murad. “To fight back, eat foods that are rich in amino
acids like, goji berries, beans, seeds and eggs, which help restore damaged collagen.”
Avoid collagen zappers like smoking, excessive sun exposure, stress,
and poor hydration. A diet high in plant protein (soy protein, hummus, nuts, nut butters,
foods made with almond flour, etc) can offer
the support of plant estrogens, known as phytoestrogens, which can have a supportive effect
on collagen production.

Buyer Beware
Shopping for reliable products can be confusing. Which is why most
women have medicine cabinets full of products promising results, oftentimes bought on impulse, that are not right for their specific skin issue.
“Have realistic expectations from what you expect to get out of a jar,”
maintains Danny Griffin, VP Product Development for Kevyn Aucoin Beauty.
“If the claims are too good to be true, be wary.”
Realize that if an ingredient is a hot topic, many manufacturers will heavily push a product that may only contain a small amount of the breakthrough ingredient. When reading a cosmetics label, there is no way to tell how
much of a specific ingredient is actually in a product. If a product is claiming it is
packed with a specific ingredient, that ingredient will be listed first or second on
the ingredient list on the package.
“It is a myth that all beauty products promote good skin health are monitored by the FDA. In fact, they are not and are in a class called cosmeceuticals,
which is the supposed combination of cosmetic and pharmaceutical but are
considered cosmetics, legally,” stresses Joshua L. Fox, MD, FAAD; Medical Director of Advanced dermatology PC; Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery.
It is also a myth that all skin creams are the same and work the same, according to Dr. Fox. “Consumers should keep in mind that manufacturers can make most any claim they want to as long as it
does not claim to treat or prevent disease. Also the product
generally doesn’t tell you the percentage or concentration of
the active ingredients.”

Evans
Linda
She’s rich, famous, gorgeous and an amazing cook.
No, she’s not a fantasy avatar cooked up by Maxim,
she’s world-famous actress Linda Evans, and she’s
here to say exactly what you’d expect an iconic,
world-traveled, almost impossibly fortunate person
to say: she’s lucky and grateful – and has taken a
long, long journey to discover that happiness doesn’t
lie in luxury and success.
Of course, Evans says this just hours after returning from
her most recent African safari, so one can’t avoid the irony of
a woman who can do everything her way, choosing to do it the
hard way. “I was just in Africa sleeping on the ground for a week,”
the actress says in our late-winter chat. “I was just out there sleeping
on the dirt. I was not at a hotel or anything. Nothing like an adventure to keep
you young!”
It’s not that Evans disavows her years of living in high style, she just sees a
wider picture now. “It’s a great feeling to have all those things that everybody
thinks will make you happy,” she acknowledges. “My God, who wouldn’t want
wealth, fame and success? I love that I got to experience it. But an interesting
thing happened to me. I had the very fortunate opportunity to see that it
wasn’t the be-all and end-all it’s supposed to be. If it were, a lot of people that
are successful and wealthy wouldn’t have killed themselves. What makes me
happy is when I don’t look outside of me but inside of me for things to define
me. When I found peace within me, then I got happy. It didn’t require money
or people or anything else. Just an amazing love of self.
“Of course, that took my whole life!” Evans laughs. “Because you gotta go

of elimination. So we think the obvious things. The first thing I thought was,
`if I could be married and have a child, I could have the ultimate dream, a
woman’s dream, and that would make me happy.’ Then that didn’t quite work
out. Then I had a career and got the success and the money and the fame. I
thought, `Okay, that’s gonna make me happy,’ and it didn’t. And I thought,
`Okay, where do you look now?’ I mean, it’s the obvious; it’s yourself.”
What started Linda Evans on her process of self-discovery was the opportunity
to write a memoir, which she did with her stepdaughter, Sean Catherine Derek.
Titled “Recipes for Life,” the glossy volume is stocked with color photos, brief
but honest anecdotes and, yes, recipes. Filling out the volume’s 265 pages are
more than 50 edible creations with names ranging from “Mom’s Baked Mac and
Cheese” to “Duke’s Crab Dip” (the “Duke” being Derek family friend, John Wayne)
to “Lose-Your-Figure Potatoes with Cheese and Garlic.” Even that title could
make some jealous types sigh, since weight control has never been an issue
with Ms. Evans. “I am a naughty girl,” she confesses. “I eat everything. That I’m
healthy is a shocker. I eat what I like, and I love pizza and cheeseburgers and
pasta. My friends all go, `We don’t like you! You eat like a man and you don’t
gain weight.’”
Well, why doesn’t she? “I was born with a good
metabolism, that’s the truth,” replies Evans. “I
walk an hour to an hour and a half every day in
the morning. That kick-starts my metabolism and
gives me the opportunity to eat the things I like
and not gain a lot of weight. I mean, if I wanted
to be `Hollywood perfect’, I’d probably lose eight or
ten pounds and be back where I’ve been. But I’m very
content to weigh more and feel more comfortable with my
body. I also work out with weights, but those are just to keep
my strength, not to buff me up. I’ll be 70 this year. But I’m an
active person, and I want to remain active.”
That said, Evans did spend a period of time chasing the elusive fountain of
youth. Famously, she appeared on “Oprah” in 2010 with Teri Hatcher and Cybill
Shepherd to discuss the realities of aging in show business. Admitting that
she’d had plastic surgery at age 50 because she was dating a younger man
(musician Yanni), Evans told the TV titan that she didn’t regret the procedure.
“I wanted to look a certain way so I could feel better about that 12-year
difference. And it worked.”
Elaborating on those thoughts two years later, Evans says, “I think all women
want to look their best. As Bette Davis said, `Aging isn’t for sissies.’ But there’s
a line where you say, “Am I wanting to look the best I can, be the best I can
be, the healthiest I can be – or do I still want to compete? And when I’m in my
60s or 70s, do I try to look like I’m in my 40s and 50s? That’s a lot of work! And
thanks to medical science and all the options we have available to us today,
certainly, one could do that. But it was too much trouble for me. Once I found
that I was what I was looking for, I could let go of a lot of expectations that
weren’t reasonable for the time of my life.”
Assessing and examining her life have been the main by-products of Evans’
“Recipes” experience. “It was an intense journey because I didn’t know how
it was going to be until I finished it,” recalls Evans. “And, of course, if I hadn’t
had a stopping point where it had to go to press, I’d probably still be working
on it! Now I look at books and I wanna go up and kiss the book and say
congratulations to the author that he got it done. I have such appreciation of
people completing a book! But at the same time, I really recommend to anyone
50 years and older: look at your life and write it down. Because when you
write your life down, you revisit and see it from a different perspective. You can
look to see how the worst things that happened to you turned out to be the
best things that happened to you.”
It is common knowledge that, at least emotionally, the worst thing that
ever happened to Linda Evans was getting thrown over by her first husband,
actor-director John Derek, for the 15 year old who would become his fourth
wife, Bo Derek. “Her name was Mary Cathleen Collins,” recalls Evans. “And John
by David Lefkowitz
was making a movie with her. He asked me to work with her on her
acting because she had never done anything. So I worked for months
and months with her. And I really liked her. I never, ever in a million
years suspected that he would fall in love with her and go away with
her. It just wasn’t in my reality. So the shock of it was so intense,
and I was so devastated, that it took quite a while for me to realize
that he wasn’t coming back and I had to get on with my life. I don’t
blame Bo. I don’t think she went after John. I think John went after
her, and that was his choice. And since I liked Bo, we just became
friends. But the minute I decided to get on with my life and went out
and started doing films again, I met the man I was going to marry
[property manager-turned-disco entrepreneur Stan Herman]. More
importantly, if I’d stayed married to John, I never would have done
`Dynasty’ and never had the life I had. So in a way, John did me a
favor by running off with Bo.”
Of course, the crazy, fairy-tale-cum-soap-opera nature of her first
marriage isn’t lost on Evans. She first fell for husband John as a 13
year old watching him up on screen in “The Adventures of Hajji
Baba.” “He was a prince on an Arabian horse riding across the sand
dunes,” recalls Evans, “and I just fell in love. I said to my sister,
`I’m gonna marry that man!’ Then I read in a movie magazine
that he was married. I was devastated! So I went on with my life
and didn’t think much about it until I was doing the pilot for `Big
Valley.’ By this time, he was married to his second wife, Ursula
Andress. He called to take some pictures of me, and I thought,

The Suspense is Killing Me
Debut Thriller Author Tackles Future Scientific Research
When author Kira Peikoff was in high school, her best friend passed away
from leukemia. For Kira, writing fiction was a way to render her own ending
to a situation she couldn’t change in real life. And in fact, Arianna Drake,
the heroine in Kira’s gripping debut novel, Living Proof, suffers from a lifethreatening disease. The story revolves around the search for a cure, but because the story is set in 2027—and the country has moved in a frighteningly
conservative direction with regard to stem cell research and reproductive
rights—this search must be conducted in secret. The story, the characters,
the unfolding plot and escalating suspense all make for a riveting read that
will keep your heart racing! I had the pleasure of meeting Kira Peikoff at a
recent panel of thriller authors at the Port Washington library and learned
more about where her ideas for the book originated.
Have you always been interested in writing?
I grew up as an only child and quickly found that writing was my main
source of entertainment. I was also an avid reader—I inhaled books—
and I used to write short stories when I came
home from school. I always knew this was what
I wanted to do. When I went to college, I studied
journalism and it gave me exposure to real-world
events and people and ideas, which stimulated my
imagination and gave me the idea for my first novel.
How did the story concept for this book come
about?
When I was working as a reporter in D.C. during
the summer of 2006, I was assigned to cover President Bush’s first veto of his presidency, which resulted in the denial of federal funding for stem cell
research. The bill had already passed in the House
and Senate, but Bush vetoed it. I had taken a course
in genetics and was familiar with all the research
going on in this area, and I was outraged. As a journalist, it was important to write a fair and balanced article, but l couldn’t
get over the fact that something devastating had happened. I wanted to
show the life-and-death stakes in the form of a story, and since I’ve always
been drawn to the fast-paced action of suspense novels, I decided to write
a thriller.
How long did it take to write?
I took a year off after I graduated from NYU and wrote full-time. I was 22
at the time, and then I spent the next several years rewriting it while working
as a journalist. I didn’t sell the book until 2010.
What is different about writing a thriller?
With a thriller, you have to keep the pace going all the time and there has
to be a lot at stake for your characters … really high stakes with characters
in ever-increasing danger.
Did you know how it was going to end or did the ending come about during the writing?
I decided on the ending first so that the events, characters and action would

have a logical and tight flow.
Why did you set the book in the future?
Society, as it is portrayed in the book in the near future, takes current ideas
one step further. I felt that this was a possible route if certain ideas took hold
and certain people got elected. I didn’t think it was implausible.
Why is this book so relevant during this particular election?
I think the book is now more relevant than ever. There is a contingent
of voters who are seeking to end stem cell research for good and to limit
reproductive rights by pushing a bill through state legislatures that restores
the legal rights of “personhood” to the pre-born. The bill is currently being
considered by more than a dozen states. Does the government have a right
to interfere with legitimate scientific research—especially when it’s religiously
motivated? What happened to the separation of church and state?
You seem to know a lot about the science of stem cell research.
I’m originally from Irvine, and UC Irvine has one of the foremost centers for
stem cell research in the country. I toured their labs and got a crash course,
and had the chance to interview scientists and doctors. It was very eye-opening! They’ve made paralyzed rats walk again, and they started conducting a
clinical trial with humans with spinal cord injuries, although they have since
had to abandon that research because of financial reasons.
I’ve heard one of your fellow thriller writers remark “Never let the truth
interfere with a good plot line!”
A book has to be accurate when you are talking about known facts. You can’t
make obvious and lazy errors. But when you get to the theoretical, the possible
or the future, then you must take some leeway for the sake of the story.
Have you enjoyed meeting the public?
I love hearing people’s reactions to the book. It’s an amazing feeling to
know that I made an impact on someone else. It’s so exciting—I can’t imagine how this would ever get old!
