to create colors.
WB0249 General Purpose Base
WB0249 base is used with WB-99 pigments. Mix pigments at up to 10% by weight to
create colors. General Purpose Base will not cure as quickly as the Quick Cure Base
so take this into account when adding WB-99 PS pigments. Any mixture made using
the General Purpose Base should be tested prior to production. WB0249 General
Purpose Base is less expensive then the other bases.
WB0255 Discharge Base
Discharge base is used with pigments. Mix pigments at up to 10% by weight
to create dischargeable colors. Test all color mixes for suitability prior to mixing
production quantities. User must add 3% to 6% by weight of WB0259 Discharge
Agent to activate this base. Only activate enough products to run 3 to 4 hours. The
additive should be mixed into the base with a high speed drill and or a homogenizer.
WB9067 Discharge White Plus

WB0256 Low Crock Binder
This may be added to heavily saturated colors to improve Crock resistance. WB-99
will normally pass industry Crock test standards as is. WB-99 colors will have better
crock results after the print ages 24 hours or more. Low Crock Binder would typically
be added to other pigment systems when using WB-99 bases. Add up to 10% by
weight of the Low Crock Binder to improve pigment crock test results.
WB0257 Penetrant
WB0257 is added to WB-99 inks at up to 5% by weight to provide better penetration
into certain fabrics thereby giving a softer feel.
WB0258 Lubricant
Add WB0258 at up to 5% by weight to provide more open time of the wet ink to
prevent drying in the screens.
WB0510 Thickener
Used at ½ to 1% by weight to increase viscosity of WB-99 ink. This would lead to an
increase in opacity, but will increase the hand of the print.
WB0277 JB Soft Crack Natural
WB0277 creates a soft cracked vintage look on 100% cotton light or dark fabrics. Mix
up to 30% WB99 PS pigments by weight to create colors. WB0277 must be cured

design.
MV0246 Shatter™
Shatter ink was created to give a worn, brittle, tattered look. Flash just after the
last print screen and then stretch it before it goes into the dryer to create a worn,
distressed, design with the look and feel of ink that’s falling off the garment.
MP0137 Sponge Puff™
Sponge Puff was developed as a soft hand puff product for creating a soft, more
durable print. Great for adding texture to your design from underneath or on top.
HG0186 Sparkle Gel™

Rutland® ModifierS & Additives
These specialty viscosity modifiers and additives were formulated to work with the Rutland
screen print ink mixing systems and series to allow the textile screen printer to adjust inks to
meet specific application needs.
M00001 VISCOSITY REDUCER
Use M00001 up to 1% by weight to reduce the viscosity of thick ink. This product will
not cure and should always be mixed in the correct ratio with a plastisol ink or base.
M00009 QUICK FLASH ADDITIVE
M00009 is mixed into a plastisol at up to 10% by weight to speed up the flash cure
time of the ink. Mix in thoroughly.
M00010 THICKENER #10™
Mix M00010 Powder Thickener into plastisols to raise the viscosity. Higher viscosity
inks will normally print with more opacity. Add up to 1% by weight to thicken a
plastisol. Make sure to stir properly to insure a complete mixture. This may require
a mechanical mixer. Results are immediate. This product will not cure and should
always be mixed in the correct ratio into a plastisol ink or base.
M00012 DE-TACK™
Use De-tack in plastisol inks at up to 1% by weight to take the wet tack or stickiness
out of the ink. This will allow the inks to process easier through finer screen mesh.
Take care not to use more than the recommend amount as not to affect the cure of
the plastisol. This product will not cure and should always be mixed in the correct
ratio into a plastisol ink or base.
M00015 DULLING PASTE / SUEDE ADDITIVE™
This multiple use product is used at up to 2% by weight to eliminate gloss in plastisol
ink products and used at up to 15% by weight as an additive to plastisol ink to create
a Suede looking print. This product will not cure and should always be mixed in the
correct ratio into a plastisol ink or base.
M00022 TACK FREE ADDITIVE™
Tack Free additive can be added to plastisol ink up to 5% by weight to decrease the
after flash or hot tack of the product. This product will not cure and should always be
mixed in the correct ratio into a plastisol ink or base.
M00023 FLAME RETARDANT ADDITIVE™
M00023 aditive is added to plastisol inks at up to 10% by weight to improve flame
retardency of the ink. Keep in mind that the combination of the ink and the fabric
substrate have to pass a burn test to be approved, not the ink alone.

protective rights of third parties are involved. It does not release the user from the obligation to test the suitability of the product for the intended purpose and application.
M00333 THICKENER (LIQUID)™
M00333 Paste Thickener may be mixed into plastisols to raise the viscosity. High
viscosity inks will normally print with more opacity. Mix up to 2% M00333 by weight
into a plastisol ink to make it thicker. This product may be stirred in by hand but
make sure the mix is uniform. Results take 1 to 2 hours after mixing. This product will
not cure and should always be mixed in the correct ratio into a plastisol ink or base.
M00683 FOIL RELEASE AGENT™
Mix release agent into a plastisol ink at 10% to 15% by weight to create a foil release
plastisol. This will allow the printer to make multicolor prints with foils only sticking
to the desired areas without using a water base ink. The addition of M00683 will
make the plastisol ink softer, more likely to fibrillate, and will cause crocking beyond
normal standards. Wash and crock test should be performed on the print to make
sure you achieve the desired results before running production quantities of prints.
Cure the prints as normal.
M20063 EXTENDER BASE™
Mix into the M2 ink system to extend the volume of ink. Remember as you add base,
you are reducing opacity and color strength.
MS0000 PRIMER CLEAR™
Primer clear can be mixed with other plastisol inks at a 1:1 ratio to create a very soft
hand feel for printing on light colored cotton. Primer clear used as an under coat will
assist in locking the fibers in place, and improve fibrillation. It is typically printed
through high mesh range (200 mc./in.) (78 mc./Cm.) and above. The mixture can
print through a wide variety of mesh ranges and will cure at 320 degrees F. (160
degrees C.)
MZ0001 FIBERBOND™
Mix 3% by weight FiberBond to colors when printing on light Cotton garments to
reduce fibrillation. Mix 7.5% by weight FiberBond to NM (Nylon Mesh Series) inks for
printing on tightly woven nylon such as umbrellas, bags and nylon jackets.
NA0005 CURABLE THINNER™
NA0005 is used to thin plastisol inks. It can be mixed into the product at any level
necessary to achieve the desired printability. Keep in mind that the more of any
thinner you add to ink, you are reducing the opacity and other properties of the
product such as low bleed. The mixture can print through a wide variety of mesh
ranges and will cure at 320 degrees F. (160 degrees C.)

17
NA0839 S.H.A.P.E.™
NA0839 is used to extend a plastisol ink and to make it print with a softer hand.
NA0839 may be mixed in at any ratio but it will reduce the opacity and color strength
of the ink. The mixture can print through a wide variety of mesh ranges and will cure
at 320 degrees F. (160 degrees C.)
NP0055 PUFF ADDITIVE™
NP0055 is a puff concentrate. Use at up to 15% by weight to make a puff ink from
any opaque plastisol color. Mix thoroughly. NP0055 may also be used to take the
gloss from plastisol ink. Add 2% by weight to plastisol ink to make a matte finish.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT PLASTISOL INKS
Plastisol Inks are widely used in garment printing because they
are easy to print, do not dry in the screen, can be opaque on dark
garments, and can adhere to most textiles. They are composed
primarily of PVC Resin (a white powder ) and plasticizer (clear
liquid). Plastisol must be heated 300 to 340 degrees F. (143 - 166
degrees C.) to dry (cure).
Controlling Dye Migration: Dye migration is the problem
caused by dyes in polyester fibers transferring to and changing
the color of plastisol inks. The colors most likely to migrate are
Red, Maroon, Kelly Green, and some of the darker Blues. Dye
migration may appear immediately after the ink is cured, or
hours, days, or up to two weeks later.
Plastisol Inks can be printed on virtually any surface that can
withstand the heat required to cure the ink and is porous
enough to permit good ink penetration. Plastisol Inks do not dye
the fibers. Instead, the ink wraps around the fibers and makes
a mechanical bonded with the fabric. For this reason, they will
not adhere to nonporous substrates such as plastic, metal, and
glass. They will also not adhere well to woven, waterproofed
nylon without adding a bonding agent (Fiber Bond).
To control dye migration use the following procedures:
For More Information About Rutland Screen Printing Products:
Technical Data Sheets and Material Safety Data Sheets for
all our products are available by fax, email or our website at
www.rutlandinc.com.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Concerns: Plastisol inks
are innocuous when used with reasonable care. A true Plastisol
ink contains no air polluting solvents and very low levels of
Volatile Organic Compounds (V.O.C.’s). The manufacture,
transportation, storage, use, and disposal of Plastisol inks do
not cause injury, illness, or environmental contamination as
long as the appropriate safety and environmental protection
procedures are followed. (See MSDS Info)
Plastisol Ink Additives: A word of caution about ink additives:
It’s easy to upset the chemical balance of plastisol inks by adding
too much or by using the wrong additives. The result can be
a print that never cures properly, a problem that may not be
discovered until your customer washes a shirt and the design
falls off. To avoid this, use only those additives recommended by
Rutland, read the Technical Data Sheets for each ink and additive,
and carefully follow the instructions. NEVER add mineral spirits
to plastisol ink. Although mineral spirits will make it easier to
print at first, later the ink will thicken up while standing. Also,
it is possible that too much mineral spirits will prevent the ink
from curing properly.
Ink Storage: Store Plastisol inks at room temperature. Prolonged
exposure to temperatures above 95 degrees F. (33 degrees C.)
can cause the ink to start to cure while still in the container.
Screen Wash Up: Clean Plastisol ink off screens with
nonhazardous screen washes, designed for Plastisol.
Stencil: For Plastisol inks use Direct, Indirect or Capillary Film
Print Washability: The washability of properly cured direct
prints and transfer prints is excellent. Do not dry clean. Do not
iron the printed part of the garment.
22
• Print with high-opacity, low-bleed inks.
• Use no more heat than necessary to cure the ink.
• Excessive heat can trigger dye migration.
• Print and Flash-Cure a low-bleed white underbase, or
Dyno Grey, then print the desired color over that.
• Avoid the problem entirely by printing on 100%
cotton fabrics.
Transfer Printing: Most Plastisol heat transfers fall into one of
three categories, hot split, cold-peel, or puff. When hot-split
transfers are applied, the paper is stripped of the garment
immediately after the heat transfers press is opened. The ink
layer splits, leaving part of the ink on the garment and part on
the transfer paper. Hot split transfers are barely indistinguishable
from a soft-hand direct print. When cold-peel transfers are
applied, the transfer is allowed to cool before the paper is
removed. All of the ink transfers from the paper to the garment.
Cold-peel transfers have a glossy surface and are preferred for
glitter transfers. Some transfers can be either hot-split or coldpeel. Puff transfers are printed with special puff transfer inks
and produce a puff design. Transfers that have been properly
printed and applied are as durable as a direct print.
Curing Transfer Prints: When printing heat transfers, the ink is
gelled or brought to a semi-cure between 180 - 250 degrees F.
(82 - 121 degrees C.) just past the wet state. If they are overcured, the ink will not transfer well. Transfers that have been
semi-cured become fully cured when they are applied to the
garment.
Testing For Cure: To determine the correct dryer settings
for transfers, increase the conveyor speed, or decrease the
temperature of the curing unit until the stacked prints begin to
stick together or show a slight amount of set off on the back of
the upper sheet, then decrease the conveyor speed enough to
eliminate the sticking. Another test for gel (through not always
accurate) is to peel the ink off the release paper and roll it into
a ball. If the ball unrolls when laid down, the transfer is over
cured. A third test is the stretch test. The ink layer should be
gelled just enough that you can peel it off the paper, but if you
stretch it, should break with very little stretch.
Always Test Inks Prior To Production Runs: Always test inks to
determine their fitness for your particular application especially
new types of inks or when printing on new substrates. Before
printing a production run, print a sample for testing of adhesion,
crocking, opacity, washability and specific job requirements.
