Story
Project X students
are Picture Perfect
The 2012 Fellowship Project X students were picture perfect
this month as they enjoyed their first shoot together, producing
a collection inspired by the theme ‘red carpet glamour’
at London’s legendary Bedhead Studios.
“It was a fantastic day,” said Project X leader Karine Jackson.
“The last couple of mentoring sessions have been about setting
themselves up as professional session stylists and honing their
presentation skills, so they were absolutely ready and raring to
tackle the shoot. The guys worked in pairs and had to design and
create two red carpet looks on their model – one hair up and the
other with hair down – but both had to represent modern glamour...
red carpet with a twist. The results were amazing and surprised
even the students themselves!”
When we first met, the students
were keen to have an opportunity
to practice their long hair work,
so it was great to be able to use
the shoot to bring all that to life.
Karine Jackson
The collection was shot by legendary TiGi photographer Ben Cook,
styled by Darren Knight and with über-glam make-up courtesy of
Sally Crouch. “When we first met, the students were keen to have
an opportunity to practice their long hair work, so it was great to be
able to use the shoot to bring all that to life,” added Karine.
Project X-er Stacey Morgan from Maxwells salon agreed; “There’s
quite a lot of pressure on shoot day, but it’s really helpful being able
to pool our resources – we all have very different skills to share.”
Fellow-student and colleague Lisa Collins added; “It’s a funny
combination of frustration and excitement when you’re creating the
looks but there’s no doubt the process makes you much more
confident. We can’t wait to see the pictures!”
With their first collection in the can, the Project X students are now
looking forward to their next assignment.

As you can see from this bumper edition
of FM we’ve had an exceptionally busy
month enjoying some truly superb events
that continually go from strength to
strength and perfectly epitomize our
motto…. Creative Excellence.
As ever things have been extremely busy here at Fellowship HQ
and unlike most salons across the country the summer recess
doesn’t exist in this trade body as we busy ourselves at
basecamp making plans for the busy final two quarters of the
hairdressing calendar.
As you can see from this bumper edition of FM we’ve had an
exceptionally busy month enjoying some truly superb events that
continually go from strength to strength and perfectly epitomize
our motto... Creative Excellence.
If you weren’t lucky enough to be there ‘in-person’ at either our
recent inspirational ‘Members Night’ or amazing ‘Evening of
Colour’ then leaf through and enjoy the fantastic imagery as this
will showcase more about our incredible memberships’ talents
than my words will ever portray. As you read through the event
reports I'd urge you to make a diary note to book your tickets for
the increasingly popular Fellowship events so as not to be
disappointed. Throughout the last couple of weeks I’ve received
numerous calls and emails from disappointed members as they’d
unfortunately left it too late to claim their complimentary tickets;
my advice is simple, as soon as the event goes ‘live’ on our
website or the flyer hits your mailbox then make that call for you
and your team. Whilst reading the reports you’ll no doubt be
focusing on the models and artists that took part as opposed to
who took the pictures or wrote the story. Please always take time
to acknowledge the 'small print' where you’ll find the credits for
those guys and girls behind the scenes that do help make it
happen. These individuals (sorry too many to mention here)
tirelessly give their time, energy and expertise to ensure our fine
calendar of events is brought not only to our membership through
FM but also to the wider hairdressing audience through all the
trade titles that support our reports.
Every single edition of FM always has a ‘small print’ credit at the
back of the issue that reads ‘jolly good fellows’, my kind thanks to
all of you guys for being exactly that.
Mark Creed
President
Chairman’s Review
The Fellowship’s motto and ethos of ‘Creative Excellence’ is
certainly in abundance! It’s so heartening to see the Fellowship
flourish with its ever growing membership applications, so
important to us that we have now dedicated a page per issue in
FM to welcome each and everyone over the course of time!
July 2nd found me proudly hosting Members’ Night held at
L’Oréal’s London Academy. It was wonderful, whilst at the same
time humbling, to witness the fantastic standard of creativity
displayed throughout the course of the evening. Congratulations
to each of the 16 teams that took part.
On the 9th July ClubStar went North, not only launching yet
another great Fellowship initiative by taking educational events to
our young members in the North, but to help grow our increasing
Junior Membership. Project Leader Simon Shaw along with
former F.A.M.E. Team 2011 duo Leah Walton at The Colour Room
and Joey Ferraro at Halo wowed the 60 plus audience at the
FM 04
L’Oréal Academy in Manchester, the evening confirmed a
resounding success. To prove our commitment to our members
in the North further dates have been confirmed with Jamilla Paul
at the Wella Manchester Studio on 24th September, and Charlie
Miller in Edinburgh on the 26th September. Check out our
website www.fellowshiphair.com for up-to-date events.
The 24th July saw the first round of judging with the largest number
of nominations received for selection and entry into the
world renowned F.A.M.E. Team! Make a note in your
diary and come along to be your own judge on the
F.A.M.E. Team Selection on Sunday 16th September
at the Wella World Studio. See you there!

Monday July 2nd saw
The Fellowship for British
Hairdressing host their
Members’ Night at the
L’Oréal Academy, London.
The evening provided a chance to view various
Autumn/Winter 2012 collections from some of
Hairdressing’s most exciting salons; The Hair Secret, Hair
Advice Centre, Hair OTT, Hensmans, The Annex, Easton
Regal Hairdressing, ClubStar Art Team, Jacqueline Henri,
ID Hair, Ciente, Billi Currie, Michael Barnes, ghd,
Metropolis Hairdressing and Rush. The night didn’t fail to
disappoint, and each group ensured their presentation
offered something you won’t find elsewhere!
David Drew, Chairman of The Fellowship, opened the night
by reiterating how important the evening’s platform was for
its members before handing over to the host of the event,
Karine Jackson.
Second to present was Louise Wood from the Hair
Advice Centre in Englefield Green with their ‘Colour
Collection’. The styles were sleek and sophisticated,
using their ‘cubism’ technique to expertly colour the
models hair creations for uniqueness.
Natalie Lupton of The Hair
Secret, Berkhamstead
was the first to present, and
recreated looks from their
‘Festival Collection’. The trio
of models showcased
commercial, fashionable
and client-achievable looks
with a full-on boho twist.
FM 05
Hair OTT from Portsmouth,
showed their ‘Twisted
Simplicity’ collection, with
striking, bold styles portrayed
through classic, dynamic
shapes and colours, saluting
the fashion aid – the peplum
throughout.
Gavin Hills representing Hensmans Art
Team in Northampton used both male and
female models to present their ‘British’
inspired collective. Their finale model echoed
their Brit inspiration, with pearly white hair as
a base for the Union Jack – inspirational
colour by colourist Ashley Gillard.
The Annex in Edmonton, was represented by
Charlotte Johnson, who presented a spectacular
collection of ancestral hair and fashion. With
models named ‘Futuristic Ice Queen’, ‘Eve’
‘Queen Elizabeth I’ and ‘Marie Antoinette’.
The Fellowship’s ClubStar Art Team bade
their fine farewells and recounted their personal
enjoyment as members of the team, after
presenting their ‘Best of British’ collection.
FM 06
Representing Clerkenwell salon Easton Regal
Hairdressing, Hannah Akerman presented
their 1920’s inspired collection. Their in-house
team showed key influences of eclectic blend of
deco rolls, colour pops and fish braids.
The evening was not just a chance to
view creative hairwork, but also an
opportunity to get up close and
personal with special guest of the night,
Errol Douglas MBE. Errol
showcased his breathtaking
photographic archive endorsing why he
has earned his place in British
hairdressing, whilst taking them on a
journey from his beginnings as a
member of the Fellowship’s very own
F.A.M.E. Team!
Jacqueline Henri from
JacQueline Henri
Hairdressing continued
with the British vibe recreating
her Equestrian inspired
collection in which she took
her inspiration from 18th
Century paintings and twisted
the styles with a modern edge
infusing punk fashion.
Alexander McQueen
inspired Billi Currie’s
sophisticated collection
‘Highland Beauty’ keeping
the collective natural,
simple and beautifully
polished.
The ghd art team’s
collection ‘Absent Light’
took inspiration from
London Fashion Week,
closely concentrating on
Alexander McQueen’s
collection. There was a
dark romanticism through
their collection and they
were keen to show the
feminine silhouette, in
which McQueen effortless
portrayed.
Metropolis
believes that three
elements should
always be used in
collections;
Hair, clothes and
make-up. Their eye
popping and edgy
collection portrayed
simplicity in a very
robust light with a
masculine finish.
Ciente blended in
different tones of colour
and incorporated different
techniques to give the hair
more density to work with
in their collection ‘Anti
Gravity’, which blew the
audience away.
ID Hair from Wimbledon
showcased their ‘17th Century
2012’ Collection in which the
styles and shapes were very
texturized.
Jessie Mayfair and Ryan Johnson
from Michael Barnes collection,
combined softness with strength
and technique effortlessly. Showing
that ‘less is more’ with their styles.
Rush Junior Art Team’s Triptych
Collection used roundness as a
large factor in their collection for
this Autumn/Winter. Lianne Storer,
Pont Smith and Jamie Benny all
took inspiration from the L’Oréal
Colour Trophy making the hair
vibrant and bright.

Fellowship
Colour Night
PHOTOS RAYMOND BIRD
ASSISTED BY ALICE NORTH
The Fellowship for British
Hairdressing held its eagerly
anticipated annual evening of
Colour at Toni & Guy Academy,
London on 16th July 2012.
A sell out crowd braved the torrential rain and wind to hear
Fellowship President and Colourist Mark Creed introduce an
evening that he quoted as being ‘one his favourite nights of the
year.’ The amazing array of talent exceeded all expectations as
the audience were wowed with inspiration, technique, creative
excellence and an explosion of colour from the very best
experts, not only in the UK but also the world!
Compered by Fellowship Chairman, David Drew, this evening
reinforced the critical message that cut and colour work
together to enhance and maximise the very best results
Tai Walker
Head of Colour, Mahogany
Tai's stunning technique was inspired by Mahogany’s latest
collection ‘Duality’, contrasting and complementing techniques
in cut and colour, to create high impact looks that harmonise
dual texture and shading. He worked with interlocking triangles
adding magenta, blue, pale and intense coppers around the
head shape! These colours were further enhanced by a
charcoal slate brown base.
Christel Lundqvist
Global Colour Director, TIGI
Christel enthused about shared inspiration and education through the Fellowship.
The inspiration for her look came from Probel A/W 12 - seamless block colour with
infusion of tones for a shimmery effect. From the catwalk and street her theme was
fashion converting into colour. She showed stunning techniques using pale peach to
sandalwood and light blonde infused with gold and copper hues. She spoke about
the TIGI vision to drive the brand forward with music and street fashion through to
couture and high end to convert into colour and create collections.
Jo O'Neill
International Technical
Educational Director, Toni & Guy
Jo demonstrated the Sha Technique using
triangular and angular shapes with block colour
and root stretching. These techniques inspired by
Gucci are fast with movability. The strong juicy
colours of cerise and plum with pastel tones were
created to ooze strength and personality.
FM 08
Chris Williams
International Colour
Director, Rush
Chris worked with the roundness of the
head to create deep violet and violet
mahogany tones. Circular symmetrical
sections of dark blue, violet and blue/
green created tonal colour to merge
beautifully.
Becci Giacopazzi
Colour Ambassador,
Marc Antoni
Becci demonstrated a rainbow technique with
shadow effect using amber, violet and peach
tones. This colour technique with endless shade
selection complemented a new dimension to the
hair with definition and shine.
“It was such a fantastic evening - I brought six of my team
from the young ClubStar Members to my Senior staff. They all
loved it and are so inspired by the techniques. The diverse
work from commercial to high fashion and the use of strong
colours for subtle effects was stunning. We all loved the idea
of clothes/fashion to the hair.” Kerry Mather, KJM Salons – Fleet, Hampshire
Caroline Spencer
London Academy Director,
Sassoon
Inspired by Sassoon’s latest Elegiac
collection, Caroline worked with a short
dark base and added wefts to the hair.
Zig-zag techniques with deep violets and
raspberries helped to create this moody,
sultry and truly breath taking look.
FM 09
Carolyn Newman
Colour Director, Charles Worthington
Inspired by their Capsule Collection, Carolyn presented
an androgynous look with disconnection and texturizing,
exposing dramatic colour. The Dome Technique with blue
and black gloss was used to create flashing colour and
shine. Taking the dip-dye trend a step further she
demonstrated a band technique through black hair to
create a stunning tie-dye effect.
Mark Creed
Technical Director of Philosophy
and Fellowship President
Mark drew inspiration from the constant changes and evolution in fashion with
teenagers - “nothing stands still!” His ‘fusioned’ slices were coloured with daffodil
yellow, glowing copper, Cadbury purple and chilli red to produce a fusion of colour.
This technique was designed to offer a different look with every movement, mood
or hair parting! He described his bespoke technique as either an explosion of
colour or a more demure image depending on how the hair was styled.
David Drew then introduced the woman who pioneered colouring
as a profession all of it’s own! Former Global Technical Director
of the Sassoon Group - Annie Humphreys. Leading trade hair
journalist, Maria Weijers interviewed her chat-show style - with
the audience eager to hear everything about this industry icon
whose career began in 1955. She spoke about her strong
relationship with Vidal Sassoon, which began when he first took
over the salon she was working in and continued for 50 years.
She marvelled about his nurturing of a strong team spirit giving
everyone a voice. This ethos remains with the company today.
“With my petite size, I developed ‘Highlighting Shoulder’, standing
on my toes with my arms in the air, it became impossible for me
to continue with my work” she said, “but this stunning work
tonight makes me want to get up on stage and get involved!”
Maria asked what was the most important development she had
seen in hairdressing in recent years? Annie responded, “Safety I remember when we were working with very large bottles of raw
ammonia and 100% volume peroxide - we had to be very careful
and extremely quick, there were disasters! Now there are cut off
barriers and more effective buffers and conditioners allowing
creativity without the worry!” With such a wealth of experience
Maria asked what her biggest salon challenge was? Annie said,
“Having an eye for the person and not just their hair, their clothes,
lifestyle and enhancing their qualities. Remembering it’s a two
way street - it’s not always possible to give clients what they want
- so diplomacy is the key!” This lively and informative chat also
covered her exquisite taste and collection of jewellery, handbags
and shoes, as well as her own perfectly groomed hair.
Each model returned to the stage to rapturous applause and the
audience were invited to come forward and take photographs.
The evening finished with David Drew thanking the Fellowship
sponsors, together with Ann Herman for coordinating the event.

Meet the
Member
Mark Caswell
Mark Caswell enjoys the title of Principal Stylist and
Technical Director the Umberto Giannini Art Team.
Mark splits his time between servicing his loyal
clientele at the Umberto Giannini salon in Selfridges,
Bullring, Birmingham, trend forecasting for the
company and working in a session environment.
What’s the best thing about your salon
location?
Being in the heart of Birmingham, I’m never short of inspiration;
walking through Selfridges can be a weird and wonderful experience
but the diversity of its customers truly inspires me to get a little more
creative everyday.
What do you see from your office window?
My favourite building in the whole world! A bit geeky I know, but I
love architecture and we have one of the oldest railway buildings in
the world, Curzon St Station, beautiful Edwardian structure with
weathered sandstone!
With whom do you share your home?
My wife allows me to live with her so long as I don’t touch anything.
We don’t share our house with dust or dirt…
What do you see from your windows at home?
I wake up every morning to a beautiful wood and a huge park just
outside our bedroom window. One day it will be the English
countryside, but so far we’ve only managed to get eight miles outside
of Birmingham City Centre.
Describe your home in three words?
Home sweet home.
Dynamic, friendly and big.
What’s the first thing you do when you get
home after work?
Describe yourself in three words?
Strip off and wash my hands, I can’t stand hair cuttings in the house!
Straight after that I get cracking on my favourite hobby – eating!
Describe your salon in three words?
Honest, confident and creative.
How often do you do clients?
Most days I’m in the salon, but recently I’ve been working on more
and more shows and shoots, which I love.
What’s your favourite dinner menu?
Fillet steak and béarnaise sauce with creamed spinach and chips.
How do you relax?
Sofa, glass of wine, good film and comfortable clothes.
What type of hairdressing do you enjoy doing
most?
I have a real passion for session work, shoots and shows and I love
to bring it back to my chair so clients can benefit. If asked what I
enjoy most regarding salon work, it’s strong angular shapes that
really push my cutting skills.
Name the one product you couldn’t work
without?
L’Oréal Professionnel tecni.art Pli – I never go anywhere without it.
It’s the ultimate pre-styling spray for any type of work, both in or out
of the salon.
How do you get to and from work?
I drive and it’s a great opportunity to listen to my audio books.
What’s the last thing you do when you leave
home for work?
Give my wife a kiss and tell her I love her – every day.
Oh, and usually forget to pick up my lunch..!
Meditation or conversation?
Conversation; hairdressers never shut up!
What sport do you enjoy playing, watching?
Not a massive sports fan, but I unwind at the golf course quite a bit.
Which designer’s clothes do you like to wear?
I like plain simple casual clothes in neutral colours, Ralph Lauren has
always worked well for me in the past, but now I struggle to get stuff
that fits because I am a little circus-like, shape wise!
What fragrance do you prefer to wear?
Loving Tom Ford Black Orchid at the moment but my all time
favourite is Penhaligons Opus 1870; that’s how men should smell..!
What'’s the last thing you do at night before
turning off the light
I think, reflect or plan as this is the only ‘me time’ I get and my life
would fall apart without it. The last thing that goes through my head
every night is: ‘what will be will be.’

to help provide both scalp comfort and protect hair
quality from root to tip.

Toni & Guy talent
The Project X 2012 students have
enjoyed a truly inspirational day
with stars from the legendary
education team at Toni & Guy.
Current London Hairdresser of the Year Richard Mannah,
presented to the group, followed by cut and colour demos by
Silje Vincent and Jane Stacey. To round off the morning
session, ex F.A.M.E. Team member and avant garde superstylist Indira Schauwecker joined the group – much to the
delight of the students.
“The guys produced the best
moodboards I’ve seen since I
took over Project X – well done
to all, and a huge thank you to
the team and mentors at the
Toni & Guy Academy.” Karine Jackson

In the afternoon, the group worked on models and then
presented their moodboards. Toni & Guy’s Gary France had set
them a challenging brief… to create their own product and
explain how they would research and market it.
Project leader Karine Jackson was extremely impressed: “The
guys produced the best moodboards I’ve seen since I took over
Project X – well done to all, and a huge thank you to the team and

Both Leah and Joseph spent the day busily preparing for the

With over 60 people confirmed to attend and the telephone still
ringing the event was already deemed a success. Mentor of
ClubStar, Simon Shaw introduced the evening, speaking of the
attributes of ClubStar membership.
With Leah Walton focussing on long hair dressing, Joey Ferraro
dedicated his presentation to a hair cut. Both fans of ClubStar they
added to Simon’s pitch by saying what a fantastic opportunity
membership was for young members of the Fellowship.
Joey presented a strong, solid hair cut with hidden colour panels
to compliment. Introducing a technique which he uses to create
texture in the hair with the blades of his scissors, whilst Leah complimented Joey's haircut by keeping her hair-dressing strong
with a flaunt of texture - reflecting current trends. Sharing her tips
for success - Leah showed the audience how padding can help

F.A.M.E.
Team 2012
meet with...
...Akin Konizi
BY ASHLEIGH HODGES
Three times winner of British Hairdresser of the Year, International
Creative Director of HOB, Akin Konizi found time in his hectic schedule
to spend the day with a very privileged F.A.M.E. Team 2012.
Ashleigh Hodges of Flame said: “Meeting such an industry icon
was a huge honour for the F.A.M.E. Team. We were all fans of his
work and were eager to see what the day would entail.”
Not to be disappointed, Akin commenced the day by introducing
both himself and the company ethos at HOB. Talking about how he
built his career and sharing what he believed to be, the secret to his
success. Akin also explained how, despite all the bravado in the
industry, what really counts is giving clients wow hair and that we as
hairdressers have a responsibility to make people look good.
Undertaking what Ryan Harris commented on as a fantastic haircut,
Akin went into great detail explaining his precision cutting technique
and hair-line detailing. He also took time to explain the process
behind the successful client experience at HOB.
Working in a workshop format in the afternoon, the team of four
worked on live models. Summing up the days experience Becky
Hunt at Sanrizz commented: “Akin is an extremely passionate
hairdresser who desires to be the best and it really reflects in his
teachings. Todays workshop taught us the importance of connecting
with the client to ensure he/she feels transformed when they leave
the salon. We also learned some valuable presentation skills that will
improve our live shows!”

...Robert Masciave
BY ASHLEIGH HODGES
The F.A.M.E. Team accepted the invitation to visit the fabulous
Metropolis salon in Kingston to spend the day with Avante Garde king
Robert Masciave. Known for his wild and flamboyant design we were
excited to learn how he creates such masterpieces!
Robert began with an introduction to his career, explaining the path he
followed and relevant successes. He then went on to explain how literally
everything in life inspires him and how each of his designs incorporate the
following elements; Beauty, Sex, Macabre and Fantasy. Concluding in the fact
that everything in art is created from something that already exists.
A fantastic demonstration followed wherein Robert showed us how to create a
strong foundation and the importance of this first stage of an Avante Garde look.
Moving on, he demonstrated a range of techniques sharing secrets along the
way of his stunning award winning looks as he showed us how to create a
sturdy ponytail using his technique with elastic bands, that is secure enough to
attach the large avant garde pieces to. In the afternoon we each had live models
and we started by creating a strong base in the form of a ponytail, then added
height with doughnuts. We then used large hair pieces to create roll-like
structures which quickly built an organic shape. Robert then allowed us to
experiment using his hand-made hair pieces. The result was an impressive
structure softened by feather-like accents. It was great as we all started using
the same techniques and base and we each created completely different looks
but with a slight link between them all.
“Nothing is lost, nothing
is created, everything is
transformed.” Robert Masciave
...Darren Ambrose
We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Robert. He is passionate about the industry
without being intimidating. He is generous and a great teacher, we came away
feeling confident and buzzing with ideas for our own show.
BY BECKY HUNT
The workshop with Darren Ambrose was amazing. He started by
demonstrating his masterful hairstyling on two amazing models.
The first was an Alexander McQueen ‘Print inspired’ look. Setting the
hair to create a disheveled wave, keeping the top very sleek. Darren
then applied gel to create a firm surface on which he then used a
mix of Mac pigments and serum to paint an abstract pattern directly
onto the hair! This technique was very exciting as it allowed you to
create vivid tones and patterns on the hair in a completely
temporary way. The second look was a beautiful Parisienne inspired
hair-up. Both looks showed the importance of the overall image,
taking careful consideration to colour and styling.
In the afternoon we each had long hair models. I experimented with
intricate braiding, pulling and twisting the hair to create an organic
shape that when folded showed the detail of the braid. Izzy Ryan's
model was a finger wave blended into a frizzy wave through the ends.
Ashleigh Hodges and Ryan Harris opted for a dread lock hair up finish,
inspired by the Dior and Chanel catwalks. Using a back combing
method then straightening over twists they created fashion dreadlocks
then draped them over the face and into a anti head shape form at the
back. Creating a beautiful tribal look. Darren was a fantastic mentor for
the day. He gave some really great advice and new hairdressing
techniques.

It’s a Fellowship
Knockout!
PHOTOS ALICE NORTH
Picture the scene: A gloriously hot summer’s day
at The Country Club, Theobolds Park, Cheshunt.
President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing Mark Creed
welcomed each of the 8 teams partaking in the action-packed
family fun and team-building day wrapped in one!
The teams, two from Philosophy and Clipso, The Hair Secret,
Karine Jackson, Ciente and Professional Hairdresser first set
about electing their team leaders who were Tom, Luke, Jody, Ian,
Natalie, Sam, Paul and Laura respectively!
Ably compered by David from Graham Fisher on behalf of It’s A
Knockout, the games which followed involved a lot of water and
washing up liquid – the consequence of which were bubbles
flying everywhere! With each team getting the opportunity to play
their ‘joker’ once and double any points they won, the team took
turns to collect parts of a flower and assemble the finished bloom
in the It’s A Knockout ‘garden’; collect parts of a picture puzzle
whilst being pushed in wonky wheelbarrows and
assemble prehistoric pictures, collect water in ‘hats’ in the kitchen
and dump in measured barrels play ‘lumberjack’ collecting
coconuts and then knocking them off palm trees whilst
blindfolded. The most demanding game however was ‘Le Prison’
where teams carried ‘goodies’ to their prisoner across miles of
very slippery vinyl, if successful releasing their prisoner to rush
back to the beginning.
FM 18
All completely ridiculous but such great fun! Everyone entered
into the spirit of the day and luckily there were no injuries, albeit
plenty of aches! By the end of the day the teams learned their
final placings:
8th place
7th place
6th place
5th place
4th place
3rd place
2nd place
1st place
Clipso Hemel

Philosophy B (by 0.5 points!)
Mark Creed and Karine Jackson presented medals to team
members to the top three teams along with a bottle of
champagne to celebrate their brilliant achievements!
Closing the day at 4pm, Mark thanked everyone who had taken
part including Project Leader Karine Jackson and Carol Spencer
from the Fellowship office, and the brilliant team who were
responsible for running the show for providing such wonderful
facilities.

For lunch I usually eat...
anything green and healthy.

Something black; textures and styles change depending if I’m

by Lancome Genifique Serum. I use MAC Mineralize make-up,

set the house alarm.
While walking to work I use the time to...
Plan my day, think about the clients booked in, come up with shoot
ideas, focus on opportunities for the session team and dream about
my soon-to-take holiday in Croatia.
I usually leave the salon...
anywhere around 7:30 to 8-ish.
My favourite way to wind down after work is...
with a cold glass of wine.
If I’m staying in I’ll wear...
something loose and comfortable.
And if I’m going out I’ll wear...
Pretty much anything. At the moment it’s Disco Pants from
American Apparel, a camisole top and my Prada flame-heels.
My bedtime beauty regime is to...
Remove my make-up and apply Elemis Pro-Radiance Cream
Cleanser. This is followed by a Rodial Five Minute Facial Mask
and then Rodial Glam Balm.
The last thing I do before I go to sleep is...
set my alarm for the morning.
On my to-do list today is...

My perfect Sunday consists of...
A lie-in, followed by a fitness session with my personal trainer;
then a great Sunday lunch followed by an easy, chilled evening
watching a movie.

Meet
the NEW
Member
Sally Montague
The Fellowship is delighted to
welcome Sally Montague, Sally
heads her six salon group in
Derbyshire.
How did your career in hairdressing
begin?/When was the salon opened?
Tell us five words to describe yourself/your
salon?
I worked as a Saturday girl before embarking on an
apprenticeship with a well known Midlands based hair group.
After working my way through the ranks I opened my first salon
in 1983 in Derby City centre.
Myself: Passionate; dedicated; enthusiastic; vivacious; energetic.
Committed, Positive, Innovative, Determined and Professional.
What did you do next?
I have since opened six salons in and around Derbyshire,
employing over fifty staff and setting up an in-house training
school and art team.
Where is your salon/where are your salons?
Two of the salons are in Derby City centre, one is in the university
campus and the other salons are in surrounding historical market
towns.
What’s so special about them?
We have worked hard to build a fantastic reputation in the area.
As a group, I have encouraged each salon to have a unique
style and atmosphere whilst remaining true to our brand
aesthetics and values. This allows clients to frequent the
salon most suited to them whilst knowing that all our salons
have the same high-standards.
What’s your next step?
As well as opening two more salons this year I am also
restructuring the entire In-house apprenticeship training
programme so it’s a very busy time!
What has been the biggest moment in
your/your salons career?
Winning the ‘Derbyshire Business Person of the Year’
was a huge moment for me.
FM 20
Who would you most like to meet/have met?
I find Julien d’Ys creativity incredibly inspirational and would love to
meet him.
What are the best things in your life?
Apart from my family, the challenge of growing the business and
watching one of my daughters, Angel, forge her own path in the
session world whilst combining that with a busy column has
made me very proud. In the salon, being able to give something
back to the people who really need it through ‘My New Hair’ is
immensely gratifying.
Do you have a motto/does your salon have
a strap-line?
Welcome to ‘Our World’. We wanted a strap-line that would reflect
the total experience we endeavour to provide to our clients.
Why did you join The Fellowship?
I have been meaning to become a
member for a long time but this
year I decided to make it happen,
the prestige and high standing of
The Fellowship in our profession
was what attracted me to become
a member.
Ashleigh Hodges has been
hairdressing for just 5 years.
She works at the Flame Hair
Studios salon in Towcester
and fast tipped to become a
legend in the future – thanks to
her coveted position in the 2012
Fellowship for British
Hairdressing F.A.M.E. Team.
Books that changed my life...
I grew up with Harry Potter so any Harry Potter book is very
special to me.
Recurring dreams...
I dream about being chased, not sure what that means!
Most loved fairy tale...
Beauty & the Beast.
Song known by heart...
Anything by Nirvana.
Will never throw away...
I'm a complete hoarder! I still have a doll from my childhood!
Dream lunch dates...
Coco Chanel, Steve Jobs, Audrey Hepburn,
David Attenborough, Kurt Cobain.
Favourite film...
Edward Scissor Hands, I love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp!
Worth fighting for...
Family.
Brains or beauty?
You always need beauty to catch an eye, but your brains will
keep you/them interested forever!
Personal motto...
Everything happens for a reason.

Fellowship News Round Up...
BY ANN HERMAN
BRITISH MEN’S
HAIRDRESSER OF THE
YEAR JAMIE STEVENS
GIVES FRANKIE
COCOZZA THE CHOP
“We have been looking for young talent
that we can nurture and help progress in
the hairdressing industry. It would be
fantastic to help launch the career of the
next fashionista - a rising star of the
future. The calibre of the stylists today
was beyond expectations and made a
really difficult judging process. I believe
we have selected a fantastic team and
can’t wait to see the team progress over
the next year” says Jo Robertson.
The team will meet for their first training
session next week and will be
representing ghd at the Malibutique event
in July.
Frankie Cocozza has trended on
twitter after Jamie Stevens, twice
British Men’s hairdresser of the Year
and nominee for 2012 British
Hairdresser of the Year, cut off his
trademark long hair at his new salon
in Kensington.
Jamie, Global Ambassador for Matrix
haircare said, “Everybody wanted me to
cut Frankie’s hair when he was on The
X Factor but it was a real part of him and
when you’re going on stage in front of
millions of people the last thing you need
is your confidence stripped away. He’s a
good looking boy though and I always
thought he’d suit a more groomed style.
I’ve done his hair and his eyebrows and
he looks great.”
GHD ‘STYLE SQUAD’
AUDITIONS
ghd has announced the successful
candidates in its audition process to
find the first ever ‘Style Squad’ –
a team of talented up-and-coming
stylists who will support the brand in
its consumer-facing events
programme.
Around 100 applicants from around the
UK made an initial application, from
which 28 were shortlisted and invited to
ghd’s Style Academy in Leeds for the
judging day this month/week.

at the award winning salon. Senior Stylist
Gemma Howe was on hand to ensure
Lauren’s hair was styled to perfection with
a sleek and volumous finish, after Colour
Technician Frankee Hissey refreshed her
blonde locks, just in time for the summer
months!
RICHARD WARD HAIR
& METROSPA NEW
PARTNERSHIP WITH
MIZANI
HABB Chairman Phillip Rogers greeted
the audience and said; “We are not just
here to watch an incredible show and a
great team, but to help those less
privileged. Although we help many
people, there are many more we’d like to
help!”
Phillip handed the evening’s proceedings
over to Sassoon UK Creative Director,
Bruce Masefield who introduced the
Sassoon Colour Team. Bruce informed
everyone that the looks are inspired by
their latest collection Elegiac.
The evening was a huge success and
raised an impressive £2700 for the charity
HABB and it’s many beneficiaries, with
audience members taking away
incredible tips and tricks to use in their
own salons.
The Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa
