Newsletter - October 2013 Edition
On behalf of Harmick Hacobian President of ASDC board
and all its members, we would like to sincerely thank all our
dance members, choreographers, parents and generous
sponsors for their continued efforts in the recent months.
All parties including the Zvartnotz Dance Ensemble of
Los Angeles worked tirelessly to make our dancers trip
to LA both a memorable and moving experience. ASDC
is proud to have marked a significant achievement in its
history, accomplishing a true milestone.
We are pleased to be presenting our latest news through
this publication. Thank you to all our dance members and
families for their tremendous support, encouragement
and cooperation throughout the year.

Upon arrival the Zvartnots Dance Ensemble
greeted our dancers as they made their way
through the arrival gates. The group gathered and
headed by bus to the Hilton Hotel in Glendale.
Later that night, Zvartnots hosted a warm
welcome dinner for the ASDC group.
On Sunday 22nd of September the group was
invited to perform at the Armenian Independence
Day Festival at Verdugo Park. The atmosphere
was great, as the park was filled with stalls, food
and music. Both the 18+ and 15+ group performed
a dance in front of over 800 Armenians and was
loudly applauded.
That night ASDC was treated to a “Dinner Dance” at
Arbat Banquet Hall with over 300 attendees and a
range of international performers including our favourite
Harout Pamboukjian.
The following day the entire group set out to Disneyland
to relax and enjoy the attractions before having to face
a busy schedule full of dance rehearsals. Over the next
couple of days after the daily group breakfast ASDC
members would make their way to the Zvarnots Dance
Hall to begin dance practice. Post dance practices ASDC
was involved in various group activities and social events
including trips to Armenian Church’s, Santa Barbara
Beach, Universal Studios and Hollywood to name a
few. At night ASDC would interact and socialise with the
Zvartnots dance members, it was here that friendships
were forged between both groups and a larger family
bond was created between two diaspora groups..
As the week progressed the excitement
of being in Los Angeles grew stronger
and the motivation to perform for
dancers was heightened. The support
received by Artistic Directors Vartan
and Armine Aghajanyan further
encouraged the group to perform to
the best of their ability.
A great opportunity arose for ASDC to organise a concert featuring talented young
Armenian singer Ohanes Ohanessian, also known in the general public as
Johnny Ohan at North Sydney Leagues Club on 23rd August, 2013.
Johnny, with his orchestra and backup singers and dancers entertained over 350
people with a variety of jazz songs from famous singers such as Frank Sinatra,
Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dhorsey and Count Bassie to name a few.
Guests including several non Armenian individuals left the venue on a high and very
impressed with such a talented and upcoming young Armenian singer.
Johnny very kindly donated all proceeds of the evening to the upcoming
Armenian Sydney Dance Company’s LA tour.
Thanks to all those who attended and made the evening a huge succes.
On Saturday the 14th of September ASDC held a disco for age group
13-18 at the Willoughby Cultural Centre. Fun was had by all with a great
turn out on the night. DJ Aris Varvarian set the mood with a fantastic
light exhibition and did a great job with almost blowing off the roof of
the agoomp with his fabulous dance music. So much fun was had that
ASDC was inundated with requests to organise another one soon, and
we will endeavour to fill that request.
On Sunday the 15th of September, ASDC participated in the annual Eurofest Festival held at Ararat Reserve, Frenchs Forest. Three
dance groups (9-10W, 9-12R and 11-13W) participated at this event and like previous years the crowd cheered on as our talented
dancers showcased their Armenian dances and heritage. The ASDC dancers are always a highlight of Eurofest which is always of
great interest to the community. ASDC is very proud to be associated with Eurofest for many years now and we look forward to future
participation in this cultural event.
On the morning of Sunday the 29th September 2013, the ASDC dance group arrived at Glendale High School with lots of energy and
excitement. As the group entered the doors of the auditorium and rehearsal began on stage, performing on an international stage finally
became a reality. The day was a whirlwind of costume preparations, stage co-ordination and hair and make-up arrangements. Time flew
by and before they knew it, the doors had opened and the Armenian community of Los Angeles had filled the auditorium with over 1,000
people. The anxiety disappeared once the opening curtains opened and the enthusiastic smiles of each dancer radiated to the audience.
The Los Angeles audience was treated to a rich programme that ranged from elegant female dances to energetic boy’s dances including
‘Avandagan Parer’, ‘Naz Pars’, ‘Gadak Par’ and a mixture of modern Armenian dances. The intensity and talent that was presented by
an international group and the array of Armenian culture that was showcased through the art of dance captivated the audience.
The performer members would like to thank President Harmick Hacobian and the rest of the ASDC Board for the countless hours of
hard work and dedication in making the Los Angeles Tour of 2013 a tremendous success.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our devoted choreographers Anita Kherlopian and Angineh Karabedian. Your
dedication to the craft brought out the best in our performers and as always, we are in great appreciation.
Overall, the Los Angeles concert was highly successful and will always be remembered as a magical night for the audience, dancers
and ASDC members. It will remain a part of our ASDC history as a great achievement and will be cherished as an amazing experience.
After such a successful concert in Los Angeles, ASDC is looking forward to their concert in Sydney on the 3rd of November at NIDA
