NRMCA`s Annual Convention
NRMCA
ANNUAL
CONVENTION
2016
Sunday, April 10 - Tuesday, April 12, 2016
Loews Coronado Bay Resort, San Diego, CA
Dear Colleague,
Each year, as industry leaders gather at NRMCA’s Annual Convention, I am reminded of the strength and determination of
our members to provide a better work environment for their employees, a better return on their business investments, and a
better, more sustainable environment for us all. This commitment from our members has facilitated the launch of a major new
NRMCA initiative to promote the advantages of concrete construction in the low/mid-rise buildings market. Taking back market
share from the wood industry will create more concrete jobs, enhance investment in the industry and educate the design/build
community on the life-cycle advantages of building with concrete. At NRMCA’s Annual Convention, you’ll hear all about the
progress we’ve made in designing a long-term program to boost this important market segment.
We’re also proud to present a slate of speakers that will pique your interest and inform your outlook on the housing market,
relating to Millennials and examine the exciting developments of the Panama Canal Expansion Program. We’re happy to
welcome back housing expert, Arthur (Chris) C. Nelson, Ph.D., ASCE, FAICP. Dr. Nelson is professor of planning and real estate
development, as well as associate dean for research in the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at the
University of Arizona. Nelson will discuss how the Baby Boom shaped America’s housing market
and why the future housing market will be nothing like the past. Author and speaker
Nadira Hira will discuss how Millennials are breaking all molds and going their own
way. And finally, we will present Luis Ferreira, communications specialist officer
and engineer operations coordinator, Panama Canal Authority who will discuss
concrete’s role in this impressive expansion project.
As always, our Annual Convention will also feature a celebration of the
industry’s best at the Annual Awards Breakfast – always an emotional
highlight of the Convention – as well as our annual Business Meeting and
CONCRETEPAC events.
I look forward to seeing all of you in San Diego!

lUNCHTIME pRESENTATIONS
Steve Coppinger, CalPortland:
Discussion of the advantages of developing an energy management program
based on the ENERGY STAR guidelines. Includes highlights of some of the tools that ENERGY STAR offers and provides some examples
of practical energy savings at ready mix plants. It also highlights the ENERGY STAR Challenge which is a voluntary program for plants
to improve energy efficiency by 10% over a five year period. Including mentioning a few companies in the industry that have taken the
challenge and succeeded.
Jeremy Gregory, MIT:
The MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub: transforming innovation into implementation
The CSHub at MIT is conducting research on quantitative engineering sustainability for buildings and pavements. This includes analyses
of performance, economics, and environmental impacts. The intent is to conduct innovative research that supports engineering design for
sustainability decisions, and then transfer that knowledge to decision-makers using an implementation process. This talk will provide an
overview of the CSHub’s innovation and implementation activities for building and pavements, including opportunities for industry partners
to become involved in implementation efforts.

garden—and is prepared with innovative techniques.

nap or for relaxing after a swim. Just steps from the door is the
stunning Silver Strand State Beach. And during the summer
months on the beach, complimentary beach chairs, towels and
boogie boards are provided for guests to use.
We invite you to do absolutely nothing—or take advantage of
all the property has to offer. Pamper yourself with a signature
treatment at the Sea Spa, or unwind in the Steam Room and
Dry Sauna after a workout in the sun-soaked Fitness Center. Try
yoga, kickboxing or a spinning class. Or take a Jet Ski, kayak or
sailboat out on the water. There is even a resort marina if you
dream of sailing up to the doorstep. Of course, beach cruisers,
kids’ bikes and even tandem bikes are also available. If you’d
like a new swimsuit or the latest in resort wear, check out the
on-site boutiques.
Area Attractions
We know that the best parts of any trip are often spent taking
in the local attractions. And with so many to choose from just
a short drive away from the resort, it’s hard to focus on one in
particular. So don’t. Throw yourself into as much as you can.
The Beach Boys have a song about Surfin’ USA. If that sounds
like your scene, check out the Coronado Surfing Academy. Kids
of all ages will love a visit to the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San
Diego or LEGOLAND California.
Activities and Amenities
From the moment you come over the causeway and arrive
in the Coronado Bay resort, you know your stay there will
be memorable. We provide all the services and amenities
you need to make you feel like you’ve just checked into your
own private island oasis. Here, you can relax by one of the
three heated pools while you sip a frozen cocktail delivered
poolside. A pool cabana is the perfect place for an afternoon
