Eustaquio Wins 91st Florida Amateur Championship
Judson Eustaquio fired a course record 4-under par 66 in the
final round to win the 91st Florida State Amateur Championship at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta
on June 19-22.
Judson Eustaquio, 20, of Lake
Worth, posted the only under par total
of the Championship at 2-under par 280
for the four rounds. In the first round,
Eustaquio carded a 2-under par 68 on
the par 70 Hills Course for the low
round of that day. Eustaquio jumped to
the top of the leader board after shooting
a second round even par 72 on the Village Course. Playing the Hills Course
on the weekend, Eustaquio shot a 74 in
the third round to trail the leader by one
stroke heading into the final round of
play. “I was very confident,” said Eustaquio about sitting one back from leader
Garrett Morrison. “I knew what I had
to do to win.”
In the final round, Eustaquio started strong with a birdie on the
2nd hole after holing out from the bunker. “That was a big momentum swing,” said Eustaquio. “I had
a plugged lie on the lip and just pulled
it back for birdie.” With a birdie on the
4th hole, Eustaquio made his only bogey
of the round on #6 and then recovered
with a birdie on seven. After making the
turn at 2-under par 33, Eustaquio continued to make birdie on hole #10 to break
away from the field. Eustaquio recorded
all pars on holes 11-17 and finished with
a birdie on 18 after his approach shot left
him eight feet from the hole. “I just tried
to make pars and if I hit a good shot capitalize on it,” said Eustaquio. Eustaquio
matched his front nine with a 2-under par
33 on the back nine to secure the title by
six strokes. “This win is up there,” said
Eustaquio. “It’s definitely one of my best
feats.”

Huffman/Olive Win Senior/Mid-Am Four-Ball
The team of Dennis Huffman and Phil Olive made birdie on the third playoff hole to win the Senior/Mid-Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The
Golf Club at Fiddlers Creek in Naples.
After 36 holes, Dennis Huffman and Phil Olive shared top honors with
first round leaders Austin Jones and Randy Jones to force a playoff. Both
teams made par on the first two playoff holes to continue onto the third
playoff hole. Playing the par 5, 6th hole, Olive hit his third shot within five
feet from the hole and made the birdie putt for the win. Huffman, of Bonita
Springs, and Olive, from Estero, shot a 67-69 for the tournament. Austin
Jones, from Tampa, and Randy Jones, from Lakeland, led after a first round
7-under par 65 and proceeded to shoot a 71 in the final round. The father and
son team won last year’s Parent-Child Championship. The South Florida
pair of Bill Griffith, of Miami Shores, and Marc Rosenbaum, of Hollywood, took third place recording a 68-69--137. In 2004, Griffith and Rosenbaum won the Mid-Amateur Four-Ball South Championship and Mid-Senior Four-Ball South title.
Aylwin/Graham Set Two-Man
Shoot-Out Record
Dennis Huffman and Phil Olive
The team of Kevin Aylwin and Wesley Graham recorded a tournament record 186
to win the Two-Man Shoot-Out by an overwhelming 16 strokes at LPGA International in Daytona Beach.
Playing modified alternate shot in the first round on the Legends Course, Aylwin
and Graham posted a 69 to trail the leading team by one stroke. The duo came back
strong in the second round scramble to fire a 17-under par 55 on the Champions
Course to take a commanding eight stroke lead heading into the final round of play.
On the final day of four-ball, the pair started the front nine of the Legends Course
with par, par then posted seven consecutive three’s, including an eagle on the par 5
8th hole, to make the turn at 6-under par 30. Finishing with a 32 on the back nine,
Aylwin and Graham carded a 62 to run away with the title.
Past members of the Florida Junior Tour, Aylwin, 19, and Graham, 18, demonstrate the tremendous talent of Florida’s junior golfers. This win only adds to
their growing list of accomplishments. Aylwin, of New Smyrna Beach, earned 2007
Junior Player-of-the-Year honors after winning the Public Links Championship and
Junior Match Play Championship. Graham, of Port Orange, is currently the topranked boy in the GolfWeek Ratings and signed to play at Florida State University in
the fall. Graham won the junior division of the Boys Junior Championship in 2005
and was a semi-finalist in the 2007 US Junior Amateur Championship.

It’s a tie! Now, what do we do?
by Jack Pultorak, FSGA Director of Rules and Competitions
In golf, like many
other sports, the
round or rounds
are completed and
the players are tied.
So who’s the winner? It is the job of
the Committee in
charge of the competition to decide who
the winner is and how the winner is determined.
Rule 33-6 tells us that “The Committee
must announce the manner, day and time
for the decision of a halved match or of a
tie, whether played on level terms or under handicap. A halved match must not
be decided by stroke play. A tie in stroke
play must not be decided by a match.”
In match play, the Committee may extend the stipulated round by as many
holes as are required for a match to be
won. In such a case, if you are tied with
your opponent at the completion of the
stipulated round or rounds, you may
continue on a hole by hole basis until
a winner is determined. You may notice results such as Jones beats Smith in
23 holes. That means Jones and Smith
each halved the first four extra holes and
finally Jones won the fifth extra hole to
beat Smith. Other times, as in the Ryder
Cup matches, the match can end in a
tie in which case an equal allotment of
points is given to each side; one-half or
one full point for each side.
In stroke play, it is recommended that a
tie be decided by a play-off. Many times
a hole by hole play-off is instituted.
Commonly known as “sudden death”,
the first competitor to record a score
lower than the other competitor or competitors is the winner.
In the Florida Amateur Championship,
we use a three hole aggregate score
play-off to determine the winner as does
the USGA in determining the Women’s
Open Champion. The Open Championship conducted by the R & A uses a four
hole aggregate score play-off while the
US Open uses a 18 hole play-off such as
the Tiger Woods - Rocco Mediate showdown. In each of these cases, if they are
still tied after the play-off, they continue
on a hole by hole basis.
If a play-off is not feasible, the USGA
recommends matching score cards (page
123, “How to Decide Ties” in The Rules
of Golf Book). Usually the last nine
hole totals are compared to determine
the winner. If still tied, the last six hole
total, then three and finally the last hole
are compared. If still tied, the winner is
usually decided by lot such as a flip of
a coin.
In individual handicap stroke play competitions, if the last nine, last six, last
three method is used, one-half, one
third and one sixth, etc. of the handicaps
should be deducted for those holes.
Regardless of the type of play-off used,
the Committee must announce in advance the method to be used. It is usually
listed on the entry form or the Notice to
Players. You can imagine the problems
that can pop up if the Committee forgot
to determine the method and ended up
with a tie at the Club Championship!
Remember, use the index or the table
of contents to find the correct rule that
applies to the situation and follow the
Rules of Golf to help yourself to enjoy
the game of golf.
Amateur Championship (continued from page 1.)
This victory adds to Eustaquio’s 2004 Boys Junior Championship title. At Florida Southern, Eustaquio was runner-up in the Division II Men’s Championship
and received the Phil Mickelson Award for the most outstanding freshman in
Division II Men’s Golf.
Third round leader Garrett Morrison, 34, of Orlando, fell to second place
after carding a final round 73. Morrison shot a 72-69 in the first two rounds and
led after three rounds shooting even par. For the Championship, Morrison finished six back from Eustaquio with a 286 total. Three players tied for third place
shooting a four-round total of 290. Robbie Wight, 21, of West Palm Beach, shot
a 74-70 and finished with a pair of 73’s on the weekend. Eustaquio’s teammate
at Florida Southern, Danny Evelyn, 20, of Wellington, also tied for third with
rounds of 74-77-68-71. David Johnson, 21, of Palm Bay, carded a 72-75-67-76
for a share of third place.
Eustaquio receives a crystal vase and his name inscribed on the Clarence
Camp Championship Trophy. The top 15 plus ties receive an exemption into the
2009 Florida State Amateur Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
Before reaching the Championship, more than 900 participants attempted Judson Eustaquio
to qualify at one of 13 sites across the state setting a new tournament record for
entries filed. The top 168 amateur golfers in the state played 18 holes each on the Village and Hills Course on June 19-20. After 36
holes, the field was cut to the low 70 and ties with a two-round total of 153. The final 36 holes of the Championship were played on
the Hills Course on June 21-22.

Championships Receive
Record Number of Entries
The 2008 Championship is off to a great start as four major
Championships have received record number of entries filed.
The Senior, back in April, received more than 385 entries for
the Championship at Old Corkscrew GC compared to 379 in 2007.
Since the number of entries received has always surpassed the
capacity of the Championship, a qualifying stage was instituted
in 2005 when 346 golfers attempted to qualify.
The Amateur Championship at Jupiter Hills received 923
entries this year. Last year at Innisbrook, 848 golfers signed up
for a qualifying site.
In addition, the Boys Junior, Four-Ball and Match Play set
record numbers. The Junior received over 350 entries up just a
few from last year while more than 260 entries were received
for the Four-Ball at TPC Sawgrass. That is almost 100 more than
last year’s event! More than 320 players filed an entry for the
Amateur Match Play in only its second year of qualifying.
We hope to continue this upward trend for the remaining
season and years to come!

Future of Golf Foundation Awards Five Scholarships
The Florida State Golf Association (FSGA) is pleased to announce that five deserving juniors have been awarded scholarships
through the Future of Golf Foundation. The Future of Golf Foundation provides college scholarships to employees and the dependents of employees of member clubs as well as junior golfers in the state.
Casey Clayton, 18, from University Park, finished her senior year at Riverview High School where she maintained a 4.6 GPA.
Casey will be attending University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in the fall with hopes of becoming an oral surgeon. Casey played in
the Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association and varsity golf for the high school.
Bria Hitt, 17, from Miami, graduated from Coral Reef Senior High School and will be attending Florida International University
where she has been accepted into the mechanical engineering program. Bria plays and volunteers with the First Tee of Miami and
also played on her high school’s golf and tennis teams.
Sara Hodges, 18, attended First Academy in Leesburg and will be going to Yale University in the fall. Sara ranked first in her
class with a 4.7 GPA. She works at Arlington Ridge Golf Club and also played varsity golf and is a member of the Lake County
Junior Golf Association
Janet Keatley, 18, from Casselberry, attends University of Central Florida majoring in psychology. Janet keeps a 3.25 GPA at
UCF while staying active in community and school activities.
Eric Baker, 17, from Lady Lake, graduated from Leesburg High School last month. He has worked at Harbor Hills Country Club
and Tree Tops Driving Range. An avid golfer, Eric also helps teach junior golf camps at Harbor Hills.
In addition to providing college scholarships, the Foundation assists junior golfers with entry and travel expenses to state and
national tournaments. This summer, we anticipate supporting many of Florida’s outstanding junior golfers with financial expenses
to USGA National Championships. In the past, the Foundation has enabled juniors to travel and compete in such Championships
as the United States Junior, United States Amateur and United States Women’s Open. The Foundation also provides reduced entry
fees into Florida Junior Tour events. Last year, the Foundation awarded more than $90,000 in scholarships, financial assistance and
grants.
