Placencia Assassins triumph despite the odds!
Early in the season it seemed as if the Assassins
might not qualify for the finals, but as the
competition began to wrap up, Placencia seemed
to have gained momentum. The team was playing
well, fans were excited and with a stunning win
on their home turf against RG City Boys, they
had done enough to advance.
The championship came down to the City Boys
of Belize City and the Placencia Assassins. The
first round of the championship finals saw the
Assassins fighting tooth and nail and while it
seemed as if almost every whistle blown in the
match was against them, Placencia still came
away with the game in a 2-1 victory up in Belize
City with goals scored by Luis Torres and Tom
Hitchcock.

Celebrate September 10th in Placencia:
Two-Day Fishing Tournament and More!
The Placencia BTIA will host its 13th annual
Placencia Fishermen’s Day Saltwater
Tournament the weekend of September 10th and
11th. Made possible by this year’s major sponsor
Yamaha Marelco and other generous
contributors, this two-day tournament will be the
focal point of activities that will take place all
weekend long at Placencia’s historic point and
main dock. With more than $8,000 in cash and
prizes up for grabs, crews will head out at 5 a.m.
each day to try their fishermen’s luck! Anglers
will be seeking the largest qualifying fish for the
barracuda, jack and kingfish categories and the
highest scoring extraordinary fish (dorado, tuna
or wahoo). Boats that bring in qualifying fish in
each of the barracuda, jack & kingfish categories
are eligible for the Grand Slam prize and the
highest scoring boat over all will be awarded Best
Boat for 2011!
While the boats are out, festivities will be
happening all day long both Saturday and Sunday
including the 10th Day Parade, the Rotary Club of
Placencia’s Rubber Duck Race, Cake Walks, Cast
Net Competition, Soldier Crab Races, the first
ever Sunday Dinna’ Contest and much, much
more. Any weekend is a good weekend to come
to Placencia but the weekend of September 10th
and 11th is a great weekend to come!
Pre-registration for the Placencia Fishermen’s
Day Saltwater Tournament is available from now
until Wednesday, September 5th! Register early
and only pay $150 per boat, $50 per captain/

The second game of the series on Saturday, July
30, was played at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium
in Independence Village. Crowds from Placencia,
Independence and throughout the South, crowded
into the stadium to support the Assassins while
much smaller contingent were present to root for
the City Boys.
Within minutes of the start, the stadium exploded
in cheers followed almost immediately by a
heavy shower of rain as the Assassins’ Ashley
Torres scored the first

PROTECTING
PLACENCIA LAGOON:
AN IDEA WHOSE TIME
HAS COME
By Stewart Krohn, BTIA Chairperson
There is a proposal being spearheaded by
Placencia Citizens for Sustainable Development
to give protected area status to Placencia Lagoon,
the mangrove islands within the lagoon and
publicly owned lands around the lagoon. This is a
long overdue initiative that deserves full
community support. It has been endorsed
unanimously by the board of Placencia BTIA and
should receive similar backing by the Placencia
and Seine Bight Village councils, Southern
Environmental Association and other groups on
the peninsula.
Historically Placencia Lagoon has been largely
ignored by local residents as a home to
bottomless swamps, fetid

Hotel managers and owners:
Four-day training opportunity
We are very pleased to announce the offering
of a tremendous training opportunity for the
owners and managers of small hotels. The
Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and
BTIA are the sponsors of the four-day course
titled, “SERVICE DELIVERY: THE
ENGINE
ROOM
OF
YOUR
ORGANIZATION.” The course has been
offered in the Eastern Caribbean and
received rave reviews from participants.
Here in Belize, through the lobbying efforts
of BTIA, it will be held in two venues:
Placencia, October 4-7 and San Pedro,
October 11-14.
Through the subsidy of CDB, and the
generosity of Robert’s Grove, we are able to
offer the course to Placencia BTIA members
at a reduced cost of $175, including lunch
and snacks for the four days. Non-members
pay $350.
Spaces are limited, as the
Placencia session will also be open to other
destinations in the south and west. This
training session is targeted specifically at our
small hotels and we urge you to take
advantage of the opportunity to take your
business to the next level.
Reservation of your space requires a deposit
of $100 payable at the Placencia Tourism
Center with the balance payable before
October 1. Spaces will be allotted on a first
come, first served basis.

Franco Gentile
By Kitty Fox, Contributing Writer
I first met Franco when he walked into my
bar at Kitty’s Place Beach Resort –
sometime in the fall of 1989. We talked a
lot. He was so excited about Placencia –
the people, plants, animals, sea life,
weather, food. He asked questions about
everything. He signed our guestbook when
he left on 29 October 1989. His comment in
the book was “good company” (due in part I
believe by our shared enjoyment of Black
Label!)
Franco came back, again and again. He
chased down fishermen and befriended
shrimp trawler workers to get the best and
freshest seafood, including squid and
scallops. He cooked and cooked. We talked
and talked. He lived in the middle of
Placencia village (the last place I
remember was above Wallen’s market). He
totally embraced the life, the culture, the
entire environment of our little fishing
village.
In the early 90s, he drove down a little red
Jeep Cherokee. I had been driving a big
4WD Ford pickup and that little car looked
just perfect for me. So, Franco and I made
a bargain: one lot (yet to be surveyed,
subdivided, etc.) on the lagoon for one Jeep
Cherokee. We were both thrilled. Franco
now had his feet firmly planted in the
Placencia sand!
He made plans to come back in the late
summer of 1993 with the intention of
leasing the restaurant at Kitty’s Place.
Other things happened that
year, but in late 1994, he
undertook
his
first
commercial venture and
leased the restaurant at our
little resort. The kitchen
was tiny (and Franco was
not). The food was great.
And our kitchen workers,
now Franco’s, learned the
fine art of Italian cooking. It
was also quite a test of our
friendship; we worked it out
in the end.
The following year he began
the construction of Luba
Hati and built a proper
kitchen for himself! Many of
us remember birthday
parties, special dinners, and
the Mistletoe Balls that
were hosted at this lovely
establishment. And more and more
Belizeans were learning the fine art of
producing Franco’s cuisine…
In 2004 he sold the hotel. Twice. Another
Belizean experience. Franco and his wife
Mariuccia moved to Cayo, bought a
beautiful farm and built a fine house.
Franco’s heart was still in Placencia
though and he soon completed his
Placencia retreat, “Casa Nettuno”.
At the same time he embraced once again
a new vocation as a farmer. He eagerly
learned to raise sheep, goats, chickens,
geese, rabbits and also bred dogs. All

except the dogs were ingredients for more
culinary inventions.
Franco had just embarked on a new project
in Cayo selling delicious ready made meals
when he died on Tuesday, the 9th of
August. He was on his way to Placencia to
celebrate his 70th birthday. Sadly, instead,
Franco Gentile was buried on the farm in
Cayo on his birthday, the 11th of August
2011. Franco was a wonderful man —
kind and generous, very inquisitive, a
great conversationalist a superb and
creative cook and an artist. A very large
soul. A very fine friend. I will miss him
dearly for the rest of my life.

The Great Placencia Shoot Out
Wednesday evening a meeting was hosted by
Laura Baya Resort and featured Annelise Hagan
of Southern Environmental Association as a guest
speaker. Annelise explained how fragile the reef
system is and how we affect it.
The contestants returned to their homes with a
very favorable impression of Placencia and the
friendly people here. They also have won several
very nice prizes and each of them talked of
returning to Placencia in the future.
This photo of a loggerhead turtle won “Best in Show” for the first Placencia Shoot Out and is just one example of how the
photos captured during the competition lived up to expectations. If you would like to see all the winning photos you can
visit The Great Placencia Shoot Out! Placencia, Belize page on Facebook.
Many great images were taken during the threeday Great Placencia Shoot Out, and these will be
seen by many underwater photographers who
may be convinced to make a trip to Placencia to
take similar photographs. These photos will also
be used to attract more contestants to compete in
the second annual Great Placencia Shoot Out in
2012. A calendar, which will be produced using
the winning photos, will be given to each
contestant and will be sold by the Placencia
BTIA. The profits generated from the sales of
these calendars will be used to cover the costs of
this year’s and future contests. If you would like
to order a calendar for your use, or to sell in your
shop, please contact the Placencia Tourism
Center.
The first evening of the contest, a meeting was
held at Robert’s Grove and featured Bonnie
Pelnar as a guest speaker. Bonnie spoke about
how to compose better photos. Everyone there
learned how to take better photos and had a great
meal. The staff at Roberts Grove did a great job
in making everyone feel welcomed and showing
our guests what a friendly place Placencia is to
visit.
This event, much like Lobsterfest and the
Sidewalk Arts Festival has been designed to lure
visitors to Placencia during slow months of the
year. While this year’s photo contest did not draw
the numbers we had originally hoped for, we
know that it will grow into something that will be
a huge draw in the future. Our Lobsterfest and
Sidewalk Arts Festival have certainly grown over
the years. These two events now bring many
tourists to Placencia, and most people in
Placencia feel that The Great Placencia Shoot Out
will do the same in future years. Elysia Dial said,
“We have learned many things about how to run
this kind of event and by improving on those
things, we will see many more people at next
year’s Shoot Out.” One of the most important
things we learned is how and when to publicize a
contest like this. For the second Shoot Out, we
will have publicity out in plenty of time for
people to plan their vacation around it. We will
also make better use of the internet to let
underwater photographers around the world know
about it.
We received a lot of support from local
businesses and believe that the prizes and
discounts they donated will bring the winning
contestants back to Placencia. We will continue
to use prizes that not only attract people to enter,
but will also bring people back for future visits.

air and insects of every size, shape and variety. In
the last decade, with the proliferation of
excavators, dredges and draglines—not to
mention the rapidly rising price of beach front—
the face of the lagoon has been changing almost
on a daily basis. Not only have large areas of
mangrove been cut and filled but seabed under
several feet of navigable water has been parceled
out and has turned into housing estates. The
resulting siltation and loss of protective
mangrove has resulted in the degradation of large
areas of Placencia Lagoon. Fortunately, a number
of individuals and organizations have made us
increasingly aware of the problem and—with the
help of international partners—have taken
important steps to halt and even reverse the
destructive process.
This latest initiative is the culmination of those
efforts. But because the process of creating a
protected area is a long one that involves much
research, scientific and political input, the PCSD
initiative includes an extremely important
request: that a moratorium be instituted
(To the left)
PCSD’s Director
Adrian Vernon
has been busy
working along
with various
government and
non-government
agencies to secure
the proposed
moratorium to
give protected
area status to a
significant area
within the Placencia Lagoon.
immediately against the granting of any leases
as well as the conversion of existing leases into
title on any land or water in and around
Placencia Lagoon. This moratorium is
absolutely crucial as if all the lands and waters
of the lagoon have been parceled out there will
be no area to protect.
Already, we are hearing reports of leases being
solicited in these ecologically valuable
mangrove wetlands. I myself have seen a
surveying team on Drunken Man Caye cutting
lines through the island’s old growth
mangrove—an area that offers some of the best
kayaking in the country, an area that will form
the backbone of the peninsula’s future ecotourism
base. Requests for information on these
incursions have been met with denials from
officials and assurances that rumors should not be
mistaken for facts. But it was not rumors
manning the chain saws, machetes and survey
equipment at Drunken Man Caye and—as we
have seen in the past—rumors have a funny way
of morphing into reality, especially during the run
up to general elections.
Again, thanks to the folks on the frontline at
PCSD and all those supporting this initiative. Our
future generations will thank you.

Snakes
By Barnacle Bill, Contributing Writer
Belize has many different species of
snakes. Yea — I said, “Snakes.” The
mere mention of the word can send
some people into hiding. There are
a lot of myths about snakes, such as
they are slimy. Wrong, not the case.
When you hold one, and I suggest
you do if you have not, they feel
very un-slimy. Kinda silky so to
speak.
A lot of folks will kill every snake they
see. Why? For various reasons I have
heard. One reason being: “One day
that snake will bite me.”
Of course, that is not true. Snakes will
run from you faster than you will run
from them.
I am not saying all snakes are
harmless. And until you know what
snake you are dealing with, it should
be approached with caution.
Green Headed Tree Snake — “A very attractive snake.” (Photo by Barnacle Bill.)
I believe all snakes are carnivores.
When the rain pours, the frogs come
out. And right behind them, are the
snakes who hunt them. Snakes are
great for keeping the mouse and rat
population in check, but sometimes the
larger Boa Constrictors will meddle
with the cat crowd as well. (We try to
catch and re-locate those offenders.)
Placencia Ladies Enjoy a Day at Hatchet Caye
This little guy is a “Green Headed Tree
snake’. They are a slender snake, no
fatter than your pinky finger. A 4-5 ft
long one would be considered big. As
with most snakes their ‘paint job’ is
fascinating to look at. A very attractive
snake. From what I have seen, they
thrive on small frogs and house geckos.
They won’t bother you so try to get a

In the end, despite what was perceived by Assassins fans to be far too many
whistles against Placencia and far too little against the City Boys, the Assassins
triumphed in a 2-1 win and took the Belize Bank Super League! Drenched fans
poured onto the field to celebrate with the players and the rain did nothing to
dampen any of their spirits. For those within the stadium there had been little
doubt that the Assassins would be victorious - the energy within the stadium
was would allow for nothing less!
Congrats to the Placencia Assassins: Champions of the Belize Bank Super

Know Your Liquor License
This is the time of year when all
business places that sell alcohol
start the process of renewing their
“Liquor License”.
have the “Placencia Tourism
Center” to act as our “facilitator”,
and making the process much more
convenient for all.
There are many different types of
licenses, but they ALL have at least
two things in common. The first
and foremost, is that they are all
governed by the “The Intoxicating
Liquor Licensing Act” Chapter 150
-- “Revised Edition 2000”, which is
the law. The second being that all
liquor licenses expire on January
31st of any given year, thus the
influx of newspaper adds, and the
general scramble to get together all
the necessary documents in order
for renewal.
The Stann Creek Liquor License
Board holds scheduled quarterly
meetings, traditionally scheduled
for the second Monday of January,
April, July, and October, with the
January meeting being the primary
one. To avoid any unnecessary
expense and hassle, it’s always a
good idea to check ahead of time,
as meeting dates can change. To
meet with the “Board” on any other
occasion, will be labeled as a
“Special Meeting”, and will incur a
cost of $100.
In order to obtain, or renew an
existing license, a person must first
submit an application to the
following; Stann Creek Liquor
License Board (along with your
newspaper advertisement), the
Police, the Public Health Inspector,
and the Fire Department. In the case
of new applicants, a letter of
approval from the Placencia or
Seine Bight Village Council is also
necessary. Before any license can
be approved, or renewed, the
business premises must be
inspected by all the parties
mentioned above. Here on the
peninsula, we are very lucky to
Now, let’s take a look at the various
types of liquor licenses that we
have on the peninsula. I will start
with the more common ones.
Publican Special:
This is basically a “bar” license. It
allows the holder to sell beer, wine,
and intoxicating liquors, “To be
consumed on the Premise”. Their
hours are from 10 a.m. to midnight.
Most restaurants prefer this type of
license, in order to cater to a larger
clientele. The annual fee for this
license in the rural areas is $1,500.
By Harald Wallen, Placencia Village Council
Restaurant:
This license is quite a bit more
restrictive than the publican special,
because it only allows alcohol to be
served with the purchase of a meal.
This license holder is allowed to be
open from 6 am until midnight, and
the annual fee is $500 in rural areas.
Shop:
This license allows primarily
grocery stores to sell “retail”
alcoholic beverages “NOT to be
consumed on the premises.” This
license holder is allowed to have its
premises open for business daily
from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. However, the
establishment must remain closed
on Good Friday and Christmas Day,
and the annual rural fee is $500.
Publican General:
This license is basically the same as
the “shop” liquor license, with one
major difference. This is the only
license where an establishment is
allowed to sell alcohol
“Wholesale” (by case). The annual
fee for this license is quite a bit
higher, at $2,500, and has caused
much controversy primarily in
Dangriga where shop owners are
selling by case, while dodging the
high priced license allowing them
to do so.
Hotel (1);
This is for the smaller hotels that
have a combination restaurant and
bar and allows them to sell retail
drinks to be consumed on the
premises, and sealed containers to
be consumed off the premises, only
to their guests, or bona fide
travelers. The annual fee is $1,500,
and the hours are daily from 9 a.m.
to midnight.
Hotel (2+):
This license is for the larger hotels
and resorts which have multiple
bars. The annual fee is therefore
increased to $2,500. Hours and
limitations remain the same.
Malt and Cider:
This license holder is allowed to
sell beer, stout, and wine “To be
Consumed on the Premises.” No
hard liquor such as rum is to be
sold. Hours are daily from 9 a.m. to
midnight, and closed on Christmas
and Good Friday. The annual rural
fee for this license is only $300.
Convenience Store:
This is one of the newer class of
licenses, and it targets primarily gas
stations. This establishment is
allowed to sell retail, in sealed
containers, “Not to be Consumed
on the Premises.” They are allowed
to be open daily from 6 a.m. to
midnight, and the annual fee is
$1,200.
Night Club:
Because these types of bars are
required to be sound proof, they are
allowed to sell retail drinks “To be
Consumed ON the Premises,” and
to remain open for longer hours on
the weekends. On Thursdays,
Fridays, and Saturdays, their hours
are from 10 a.m. until 2 a.m. the
following morning. The rest of the
week, they need to close at
midnight. The annual fee for this
license is the highest of all, being
$3,000.
These are the types of “annual”
liquor licenses that we see on the
peninsula. In addition to these, there
are two other types that are issued
only on a “per event” basis.
The “SPECIAL” license is for
individuals or groups that want to
sell alcohol for a special occasion,
such as sporting events, fundraisers,
etc. This license is issued for certain
hours only, costs $50, and requires
the holder to have present two
uniformed security (police). Many
times, the $50 fee can be waived
with a letter of recommendation
from the village council.
The “EXTENTION”, allows the
holder of a “Night Club”, or a
“Publican Special” license, ONLY,
to stay open for business for up to 2
additional hours. The fee is $75,
and also requires the presents of the
two uniformed security.
A few other notes of interest are
that in order to obtain any license,
“To be Consumed ON the
Premises”, the establishment must
provide its customers with both a
male, and female bathroom, in
addition to a wash basin. Also, the
employees of any establishment,
weather they be waitresses,
cashiers, shop clerks, etc. are
required to always have a current
“Food Handlers Certificate.”
Once again, the Placencia Tourism
Center comes to the rescue by
organizing group sessions with the
Ministry of Health, whereby
stakeholders can conveniently get
all their employees certified.
So here you have the basics. For
more detail information, you can go
to the “ACT”, or call the “Liquor
License Board” in Dangriga.

take place in November!

Seaweed Farming Near Placencia Becomes a Reality!
By Lisa Carne, Contributing Writer
After waiting almost a year for funding since the project was
approved in June 2010, the Placencia Producers Cooperative
Society Ltd (PPCSL) has finally established seaweed farms
near Little Water and Hatchet Caye. The funding comes
from the Community Management of Protected Areas
Conservation Programme COMPACT ($90,000BZ) and the
project lasts 18 months from its (new) starting date, June
2011. The goal of COMPACT in Belize is to preserve the
ecological integrity, biodiversity and character of the Belize
Barrier Reef Reserve System - World Heritage Site, by
developing and supporting a range of conversation and
sustainable livelihood activities through transparent and
democratic partnerships with coastal communities and other
stakeholders.
The project is fully endorsed by the Belize Fisheries
Department, Southern Environmental Association (SEA)
and the Placencia Village council and aims to reduce fishing
pressure in and around Gladden Spit and the Silk Cayes
Marine Reserve by providing what we hope will be a
profitable alternative livelihood from traditional commercial
species (like lobster & conch).
women’s vital role in the co-op in the past. The seaweed will
be offered both dried and vacuum-sealed (with a shelf life up
to one year), and processed as a ready-to-use gel (which
needs to be refrigerated, for shakes, etc).
COMPACT funded a market study conducted in 2009 and
Belize only suggested gross profits are possible up to
$700,000BZ/year but we hope to glean yield data that will
allow us to expand to international markets, where seaweed
is used as feed for fish farms and a base in cosmetics and the
biotechnology industry.
For more information on the project contact Sydney Lopez,
Jr., Chairman of PPCSL, Lisa Carne, Project Coordinator,
Kurt Godfrey local seaweed expert, Carlton Young, Sr. (Mr.
Jack) and/or the Facebook page entitled “Placencia Seaweed
Farmers” which also houses a short video on the project
produced Janelle Chanona and funded by the Healthy Reefs
for Healthy People Initiative.
The year-long delay came about because it was mandated
the co-op should lease the sea beds where the farming will
occur. After seeking help from Department of Environment
(DOE) and Lands we were told government would lease the
sea beds to PPCSL for $70,000BZ/year, far out of the range
of the project budget. With help from the Fisheries
Department and some personal intervention, we now have a
research permit for the duration of this project to avoid those
costly fees.
The species being farmed is Euchema spp. which was taken
from Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve with special permission
from the Belize Fisheries Department as a one-time
allowance to generate seed stock. Weather was on our side!
Tropical Storm Harvey disturbed a large patch (over 100m
long and in some places 4m wide) where participants were
able to cull from in a refresher cultivation workshop at
Glover’s Reef Aug. 23-25, 2011. The original seaweed
cultivation workshops were conducted by Alan Smith
(deceased) with funding from WWF, UNEP, ICRAN and
BFCA in 2005, and the PPCSL has wanted to implement
farms since then.
Included in the project are funds to renovate the co-op
building for processing and packaging the seaweed, and
funds to hire up to three women part-time in recognition of
Brothers Louis and Dale Godfrey show off their seaweed harvest.

Hurricane Season! Be Prepared!!!
When it comes to tropical storms some people are
not as concerned as they should be. However, this
year TS Harvey taught Belize a lesson, that a
tropical storm can move very quickly and be on
us in no time and that forecasts are not always
100 percent sure. No one even expected that
Harvey would cause chaos on an inland village
like Crooked Tree, unleashing a tornado that
destroyed houses and trees. Therefore, we should
be extra careful and be prepared for anything
when a tropical storm is near, not to mention
stronger hurricanes.
June to November are the months we should all
be prepared for, these months mark the hurricane
season here in the Tropics. This is when we are
all worried, but the biggest question you should
ask yourself is “am I prepared?” The most
common answer you’ll find is NO, most people
believe that because their house is built to stand a
powerful hurricane, they are safe. They may be
wrong. We can not predict the weather for sure,
so it’s better to be prepared than to be sorry.
These are some tips you should take into
consideration when doing your hurricane
plan:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Stay tuned to radio and television stations for
regular bulletins.
Rely only on official bulletins; do not check
these over the telephone.
As long as your house is inland and well
built-with strong foundations and a good
roof, stay at home.
Use storm shutters or board windows
securely, protect outward door.
Stock up on food that has a long shelf life.
Check that oil and butane stoves are in
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
working order; replenish stock of kerosene,
charcoal and butane.
Sterilize baths and all containers and cooking
utensils to store water. If in doubt, drink
boiled or treated water only.
Keep flashlights, candles and storm lanterns
handy along with batteries and matches.
Store all garden implements and furniture
inside if possible.
Lighten foliage of fruit trees near buildings.
If very strong winds are likely, remove all
coconuts.
If you are evacuating, leave early so that you
are not stranded by flooded roads, fallen
trees, wires and traffic jams and make sure
you have enough fuel in your vehicle and
follow routes and highways.
If there is a lull after the 'eye' of the storm
has passed, stay in a safe place, except to
make emergency repairs. The wind may
return suddenly with even greater strength.
Since 90 percent of hurricane casualties
occur from drowning, you must evacuate
islands and beaches and other vulnerable
locations as early as possible.
Those seeking shelter should shut off water,
gas and electricity before leaving home. These are tips that are given by NEMO, the
National Emergency Management Organization.
You can visit the NEMO site at
www.nemo.org.bz
Finally after the storm, do not leave shelters or
homes until the “All Clear” is given. There might
still be trees falling and electrical wires all over.
We are still prone to flash flooding and weather
changes. So be prepared, be careful and be safe!
REPORTING FIRES
With the presence of Phillip Molina
of the National Fire Service (NFS) in
Placencia, it is important that efforts
between the NFS and the Peninsula
Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD) be
coordinated to maximize firefighting efficiency.
One area of particular concern is the reporting of
fires by the public. In order to be in a position to
respond quickly and efficiently, we ask that calls
to report a fire be directed to one of the
following:
Phillip Molina (NFS) 503-3222
Kathy Anglin (PVFD) 626-0667
Placencia Police 503-3142
Seine Bight Police 503-3148
To get the Fire Department to the correct place
as quickly as possible and to ensure that the
proper equipment and personnel are brought to
the scene, please be prepared to provide the
following information:
♦
♦
♦
♦
♦
Your Name and Telephone Number
The Exact Location of the Fire (using an
address, landmark, mile marker,etc.)
The Type of Fire (brush or structure)
Any Information Regarding People in a
Structure
Any Structures Nearby Threatened
Additional information may be requested when
the call is made that will assist in the response.
The Public’s cooperation in this is vital to
provide the best fire protection service possible.
This is your Fire Department and they are
protecting your property and lives, please
support them and, in the event of a fire, be
prepared to provide as much information as
possible. Thank you for your support.

ROTARY CLUB OF PLACENCIA NEWS
The Rotary Club of Placencia hit the
ground running in July as we begin a new
Rotary year. Bingo returned with a new
schedule and location (not to mention the
addition of a progressive jackpot game),
the Summer Reading Program was held in
Seine Bight, our first Fireside of the year
was enjoyed by all, some work was done at
the cemetery in Placencia Village and
plans were made for projects in September.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Last year, Placencia Rotarian Linda Cazin
Burrow
organized

children
in Seine
Bight who were having problems reading.
The program was funded by the Rotary
Club of Placencia and was conducted with
volunteers from the Club and our
scholarship students. Based upon the
success of last year’s program, Linda
arranged for this year’s program to be two
weeks and accepted the generous offer of
assistance from teachers representing the
Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Canada.
The program started on Monday July 18
with 16 students and ran through Friday
July 29 with an average daily attendance
of around 10 students. Testing on all
students was performed over the first two
days and again at the end of the program
with improvements noted in most of the
students that attended through the entire
program. The daily sessions featured
snacks for the children, individual tutoring
sessions, and games that made learning
fun, as indicated by the results.
The many people that we wish to thank for
their participation in this program include
Edmonton West, Canada Rotarian Al
Sanderson and teachers Karen Sanderson,
Wendy Mitchell, and Cathie Graves-Evans
for their expertise and tireless efforts, as
well the opportunity for us to get to know
such outstanding people; our scholarship
students Aleen Vicente, Andrea Chironos,
B’John Augustine, Damone Martinez,
Dasha Guzman, Denicia Aranda, and
Tiana Felix for their hard work and good
natures; Harriet Augustine for providing a
place to hold the first session; the Seine
Bight PTA for making the pre-school
available for the rest of the sessions;
Placencia Rotarians Lydia Villanueva,
Lynn Ann Snellman, Wanda Stakutis, and
Greg Valiton for their efforts (with special
thanks to Lydia for sending the kids home
on the last day with a jar of her delicious
jam); and, especially, Placencia Rotarian
Linda Cazin Burrow for all her hard work
putting this program together. Discussions
have already started regarding next year’s
program using what we learned from this
one and we hope to include a program in
Placencia Village as well as continuing the
program in Seine Bight.
from the previous Bingo goes in to the
progressive jackpot, which started at
$250). The crowd was lively as the
numbers were pulled with the lucky
winners including Adrien, Isme, Janeen,
Karen (twice), Charles (Dicky), Mariam
(twice), Jason and Wendy (split pot),
Myrtle, and Wendy. The winner of the
“cover all” game was Gail, however, the
card was not completed in 49 balls or less
so the jackpot grew from the original $250
(new jackpot value will be announced at
the next game). The money raised from
this game is designated for the Rotary
Club of Placencia’s Scholarship Fund.
Another night of Bingo was held on August
4 with the lucky winners being Brent, Ivan
(4 times), Gail, Wendy, Jordanna, and
Keith. The winner of the “cover all” game
was Angela, however, the card was not
completed in 49 balls or less, so, the
progressive jackpot, which was worth
$500, will grow for the next game on
August 18. The money from this game is
also designated for the Scholarship Fund.
Our thanks go out to J-Dees for providing
the venue; our new Bingo coordinator
Sandra Steele for all of her efforts; our
Placencia scholarship students Andrea
Chironos, Tiana Felix, and Marco Funez
for assisting; Kathy Anglin for calling the
games; and, of course, all that came out to
play and support the Rotary Club of
Placencia. It is our intention to hold games
on the first and third Thursdays of every
month, so, the schedule for the next two
months is:
♦ September 1, 2011
♦ September 15, 2011
♦ October 6, 2011
♦ October 20, 2011
All games will start at 6:00 PM. Please
watch for ads on cable TV and around the
Village or check our Facebook page
(Placencia Rotary) for updates.
BINGO
Bingo returned on July 21 at the new
location, J-Dees Restaurant. The first
game of the new Rotary Year was well
attended as word got around about our
new progressive jackpot game which we
hope will encourage more people to come
out and play as the jackpot grows (a
percentage of all the preliminary games
FIRESIDE
The first Fireside of the new Rotary Year
was held on Friday July 29 at Linda Cazin
Burrow’s house. The Firesides are held at
least 4 times a year to allow members of
our Club and their spouses or guests to get
together for an afternoon/evening of fun
and fellowship. These are always well
attended and, with everyone bringing a
dish to share, the food is as good as the

McCullock provided the games, which were
enjoyed by everyone and, mercifully,
resulted in no lasting injuries to the
participants. We wish to thank Linda
Cazin Burrow for hosting the party and
our Canadian guests Wendy Mitchell,
Karen Sanderson and Cathie GravesEvans for attending and giving those who
were not able to participate in the Summer
Reading Program an opportunity to get to
know them.
CEMETERY CLEANUP
On August 6 and August 13, members of
the Rotary Club of Placencia and several
local residents gathered at the Placencia
Village Cemetery to do some cleanup and
paint the fence. There will still be some
work required that will be performed in
the coming weeks (weather permitting),
but most of the front sections of fencing
now have a fresh coat of paint on them and
the rest will be done soon. We thank the
Rotarians that took the time to come out
and help and we also wish to thank
Vincent, Matthew, Nettie, and Christine
for their assistance as well as Tiana and
Marco (2 of our scholarship students) for
their hard work.
UPCOMING
Following completion of the Placencia
Village cemetery work, we hope to do
additional painting and cleanup at the
soccer field and the playground at the
Primary School in Placencia Village. We
will post dates and time for these projects
on our Facebook page (Placencia Rotary)
and encourage residents to join us in
performing this work. In addition, we are
planning the Flag Raising Ceremony for
September, which will, once again, include
a performance by Truckee Graphite, and
will, as indicated above, be continuing with
Bingo on the first and third Thursdays of
each month.
DUCK RACE
An additional Duck Race has been added
to the schedule for this year and it will be
held on September 10 during the Fishing
Tournament. Tickets will be going on sale
soon, so, make sure you get yours early to
avoid being disappointed (tickets usually
sell out well before the race is held). The
money raised in this event will be used for
the purchase of some much needed medical
equipment for the Clinic.
OUR CLUB
The Rotary Club of Placencia is proud of
what has been accomplished by our small
group of members, but, we know that much
more can be done if more people get
involved. Joining Rotary, or just
participating in our various projects, will
give you an opportunity to make a
difference and give back to your
community while having fun working with
some great local people and getting the
opportunity to meet incredible people from
other Rotary Clubs, such as our friends
from Canada that were just here to assist
with the Reading Program. Please consider
attending
one
of
our
meetings
(Wednesdays at 12:30 PM at Yoli’s until

the Turtle you will have access to private snorkelling, swimming,
banana/ tube rides, fishing, sightseeing, or just relaxing on the sea.
Full day and 1/2 day rentals. Rates available upon request.
The main reason for this investment is due to the fact that there is only
one Government fogger to service the entire Southern Belize and we
found it to be very hazardous to the health of residents and visitors to
allow the buildup of mosquitoes and also are very concerned about a
dengue fever outbreak or any other health hazards related to
mosquitoes.
Fogging has commenced and will continue throughout the rainy
season, which is when the mosquito problem is the worst.
Kindly note that we spray in the early morning and late evening for
this is the optimum time to spray to get the mosquitoes in their
cycle. The chemical used does have a foul smell that lasts for about 5
minutes and dissipates, however it is not harmful to human beings and
is the same chemical used by the Ministry of Health. We apologize for
any inconveniences this may cause. The Council does its best to
inform the public when we will commence fogging.
For more information, we welcome you to contact us at

Placencia…a thing of song…...
Once again Placencia has been the
inspiration for a musician that felt
compelled to share his story of
Placencia.
John Dale was first introduced to
Placencia by founder of the Book Bag
Santa project, Gary Hunt. Hunt was
preparing for his 2010 trip down to
Belize when he and John got to talking.
It wasn’t a hard sell. John signed up for
the trip and joined the excited group
who stuffed their luggage full of school
supplies to carry to our little country.
While here on that 2010 trip John went
places and met people that would
change his life—it was the true
Placencia experience. Almost as soon
as he arrived back home in Roanoke he
contacted Gary and secured his spot on
the 2011 trip!
While home, his time here stayed on his
mind, and it wasn’t long before the song
that John later came to the Placencia
Tourism Center to perform began to
form.
True to his word John headed back with
the group that recently visited
Placencia. He’s one of the first to make
a second trip with Book Bag Santa and
proud of it!
Listening to his song and speaking with
him afterwards, it was clear that once
again Placencia had worked its magic!
Down Here in Belize
By John Dale
I got D’Tached by the Sea Spray the second Maya Island Air touched down
I found the Barefoot Bar, Creole Grub at Omar’s & Juan’s taxi for riding around
Rum fish, barracuda & Tipsy Tuna shooters & Paul at the Boson’s Chair I found
Sure beats all that whining & complaining I left back in my home town.
I took a well deserved vacation, island hopping thru the Caribbean Sea
I told my boss “I’ll see you later”, I’m going to see some coconut palm trees
That was over twenty years ago, I hope she is not waiting on me
Cause I’m extending my extended vacation again down here in Belize
It’s amazing how I’ve adapted in this land of pineapple and lime
& my attitude acclimated to what is called Belizean time, which means
If it’s supposed to start at seven it might get started by nine
& if it don’t there’s always tomorrow and no one seems to mind
These pretty little black haired, blue eyed beauties take good care of me
Rubbing my head, rubbing my feet & bringing me TuttiFrutti Ice cream
I think I might have died and gone to heaven, guess I’ll just wait and see
Cause this Hokey Pokey waiting way of life is what I love down here in Belize
Waiting for a bloody Mary, waiting on a gorgeous sunrise
Waiting on lobster to cook, waiting for a Baker John’s pie
Waiting to see that pretty Patty to smile down at the Splash Dives
Or waiting for that perfect cheeseburger down at Paradise
Well I think I might have finally found my calling, I’ll know in a few more years
Meanwhile I’ll keep sorting my thoughts & drinking this Belikin Beer
I keep waiting on something to change my mind and convince me to leave here
But what could be better than tropical weather, beautiful women and sailing all year
Yes I keep waiting on something to change my mind about where I ought to be
But I am living it up in this land of speed bumps, Placencia Belize
But I love waking up in this land of speed bumps, Placencia Belize

The Pickled Parrot Chili Cook-Off!

The Judges - Photo by Muzamanzie Photographs
Congrats to the winner of the Chili Cook-off and the GrillnGo Award Kathy Anglin! Jack Linker came second and Suzanne Riegel third.
The croc was given to marine
authorities.
Kai Parham from Belize found this
crocodile on the ironshore in front
of his grandparents’ house in Old
Man Bay on Saturday. Kai and his
brother are staying with Ann and
John McFarlane for the summer.
A big thanks to the judges - John Lee, Dawn Pollard and Russell
Czarnecki...and to our bean counter, Bagel Bob!
Our sponsors, Mosquito Coast Ice, Old Master Rums and Belikin beer,
helped make this a special event in which we raised $200 for the Placencia
Football Club. Ed was our fantastic photographer - we will send out photos
later. Keith and Kathy livened up the event with their great music.
Thanks to Wallen's Market (Luci!) and the BIGGEST thanks to all who
entered the event and everyone who supported the Chili Cook-off!

A voluntary community organization dedicated to animal care and protection.
July 2011 Vet Clinic
Usually there is only minor swelling and redness;
Clinic was held early in the month of July and
was just a one day clinic on Saturday the 9th.
This was due to many of the regular volunteers
having other
commitments for the regular
3rd weekend of the month. Fortunately, this clinic
was able to be scheduled¸ enabling the
continuation of the monthly series of shots for
many pets. If anyone would like to volunteer a
day or two each month to help with clinics, so
this won’t happen again, please contact Pat
Sylvester at 610-0522. Or if you would like to
help with any other of the PHS programs, please
contact Mary Smith (523-4306) or Jacque Fuller
(628-0992) to see what areas of volunteering you
would best fit into.
BAKING SODA. This is one of your
grandparents' home remedies that work. Make a
poultice by mixing 2 tablespoons of baking soda
with just enough water to make a thick paste.
Apply this to the bee sting.
CALAMINE LOTION. This works well for both
humans & their pets. It can be applied directly to
the swollen area. Repeat every 2-3 hours.
So, being a light clinic, there were only 21
animals seen by Dr. Bennett in July. And despite
the fact that there were no surgeries scheduled,
there was an emergency surgery done for repair
Question for this month: Do cats purr because
they’re happy?
(Look for the answer in next month’s Clinic
Article)
your pet will be irritated, itchy and a little sore. A
small number of pets have allergic reactions.
Most reactions are in the form of swelling,
sometimes throughout the body (hives). Some
reactions are more serious, resulting in
anaphylactic shock. You may see difficulty
breathing, vomiting, weakness, trembling and
collapse.
TREAT THE SWELLING. Most pets only need
to be treated for swelling. The most effective
treatment is an antihistamine such as Benadryl or
chlorpheniramine. The Benadryl dose is 1mg per
lb.: a 10lb cat can get 10mg or 1 teaspoon of the
liquid or ½ of a 25mg tablet. Repeat every 6-8
hours as needed.
to a dog’s nose. The damage was due to a run-in
with a raccoon.
Some of the other services given to pets by Dr.
Bennett at this clinic were:
Dogs:
14 6 in1 vaccinations
7 rabies vaccinations
Annual memberships were received from Brenda
Squires and Suzanne Riegel. This let them take
advantage of the FREE nail trim that is one of the
benefits that current paid up PHS members
receive.
The Feral Cat Program was not forgotten with the
shortened July clinic. Deb Coston & Penny Dial
set out traps for a Feral Clinic, which was held on
Friday, July 8th. Thirteen feral cats were caught,
9 females and 4 males. After their surgeries and
a recovery time, they were released back to the
areas where they were trapped.
Thanks to the volunteers who were able to give
their time to make the feral and monthly clinics
possible.
Now to last month’s question:
What can you do when your pet is stung by
one or more bees, wasps, or other insects?
Answer: (This comes from Pet First Aid Secrets
- http://www.petfirstaidsecrets.com)
COOL IT DOWN. A cold pack or compress will
reduce the pain and inflammation. Cover the area
with a cold cloth, and place an ice pack of the
swollen area (frozen peas work well). Keep it on
until the ice starts to warm. If your pet will allow
it, repeat this within 1-2 hours.
REMOVE THE STINGER. If you can see the
stinger, remove it. Scrape it free with a blunt
knife blade.
