the local college radio and indie music scene of San
José, San Francisco and Oakland, California. Pow!

years, was distributed by record stores throughout
California and the East Coast. The magazine was
put together by musicians, artists and volunteers
interviewing bands, DJs and club owners. Mayhem 2011
featured two four-hour shows highlighting interviews
and music from the college bands of the era. The
third and final installment will feature the Psychedelic
Underground music of LA and beyond in the late
‘80s with unpublished tape interviews and reviews

George Jones
MONday 10:AM to 2:PM

1954, and he is still touring and recording today. Tune
in for four hours of George — the greatest voice ever
to sing country music.
Brother from Another
Planet: Johnny Otis
TUESday 6:PM to 10:PM
Hosted by Art Crimes and John Goldfarb
Johnny Otis (1921–2012) came from the most unlikely
background imaginable for a person who would end
up defining black rhythm and blues from the late
‘40s thru the ‘50s. Born in Vallejo, this son of Greek
immigrants proved to have a golden touch, writing,
producing, and/or backing up Little Esther Phillips,
Johnny Ace, Big Mama Thornton, Etta James, Johnny
Guitar Watson, and countless others, as well as a few
hits under his own name (most notably, “Willie and
the Hand Jive”). And if that wasn’t enough, he was a
farmer, a politician, a pastor, and a DJ. We’ll hear the
evidence to support Johnny Otis’ desire to be black by
choice, if not by birth. Johnny’s talented son Shuggie
will also be featured, as we hear his own recordings
and session work.

Arbor Michigan. Nancy Reagan will host a special

Saturday 7:PM to 9:PM
An important figure in the art world, Mike Kelley

contributions.
Fans usually think of the guitar as the dominant
instrument in Surf Music, but in the early days
the saxophone shared the limelight. We’ll take a
trip back to the 1960s and also explore how the
sax continues to ride the waves of Reverb.

The Revival of
100% Pure Part 1
Hosted by Goodwrench
In the ‘90s, the 100% Pure Label, based in
Amsterdam, was a standard-bearer for quality
Dutch Techno. They sadly ceased operations
after 1998, but sprang to life again in 2004. This
special will look at the prolific output of this
label since that time, including releases from
Shindoe, 2000 and One, DJ Madskillz and others.
TouchY Me Here!:
The Luie Luie Special
For two Mayhem evenings, we’ll feature the
best of the Firesign Theatre’s albums and
excerpts from their radio show, honoring the
memory of Peter Bergman (1939–2012), the

A recreation of the legendary Hip-Hop radio
show, “The Monday Beatdown,” hosted by
Spiderman on KFJC each Monday, 10 am–2 pm,
circa ‘95–00. During its time, “The Monday
Beatdown” (and Spiderman) garnered much
respect and a dedicated following — both in
the Hip-Hop Community and the Independent
Music Community in general. “The Monday
Beatdown” was a unique listening experience.
For those that tuned in, they definitely got
their fix of Hardcore Underground Hip-Hop,
but it wasn’t uncommon to hear the likes of
Voivod dropped in a set with Non Phixion,
Third Sight and El Stew or Godstomper in
the mix with Pharaohs of Funk, Organized
Confusion and The Derelicts. So, tune-in for
some rough & rugged sounds along with a few
surprises.

Nothing seals the deal in a pop song better than
to hear the voice of the singer as he or she stops
for a moment, and launches into a monologue
that conveys the true dimensions of their misery.
They slowly open up to that good friend...
the one who’s always there when it counts...
that’s you, dear listener. We’ll hear some of
the saddest (and jaw-droppingly ridiculous)
recitations ever, sampling from a smorgasboard
of genres: country, soul, blues, and the saddest
of them all... disco.

director of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s bands from

The Revival of 100%
Pure Part 2
Friday 10:PM to 2:AM
Tune in for two hours of exploration of John
Cage’s work. Exhilarating or maddening? You
decide. Alex Ross in The New Yorker, October
4, 2010: “John Cage held that an artist can work
as freely with sound as with paint: he changed
what it meant to be a composer, and every kid
manipulating music on a laptop is in his debt.”

With Malice Aforethought Part 2
Wednesday 7:PM to 10:PM
Hosted by Goodwrench and Greta Clue
There are covers that equal or better the original
song. Then again, there are covers that butcher
the original, sometimes with an extra twist of
knife for good measure. There are also those
covers (however earnest) that make you rear
back and exclaim, “what the **** were they
thinking?” At any rate, there was a special in
2008 offering up seven hours of said covers. Sad
to say, there’s a lot of malice and misplaced zeal
about in the world, and a lot of audio butchery
yet to be revealed. Mark your calendars for
three more hours of audio comeuppance, along
with clueless individuals (sometimes it’s a group
thang) getting it hilariously wrong.
tions and music from Nigeria and Ghana. The
eventual results were Afrobeat and his creation
of a communal nation-state: the Kalakuta
Republic. We’ll look at Fela’s development
beginning with the transitional highlife-jazz
of Koola Lobitos, and then add large doses of
political activism and James Brown-style funk
for his big bands Nigeria ‘70, Africa ‘70 and Egypt
‘80, often powered by Tony Allen, his drummer
of choice for many years. We’ll follow up with
where Afrobeat has gone in the post-Fela era.
