Pastor’s Corner
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Last Sunday my mother called and I thought by the sound of
her voice something was wrong. But something was not
wrong but rather very right. My mother had received a call
from the hospital and there was a kidney available for a
transplant. On Monday my mother received a kidney and is
now recovering from her surgery. It is miraculous because
the average wait for a kidney is about four years. However,
the hospital said for a 72 year old woman all my mother’s
“numbers” are excellent and she is the prefect transplant
candidate. My mother credits your prayers for her kidney
and asked me to thank you all! Please also pray for the
repose of the soul of the 52 year old man who donated his
kidney and the consolation of his family.
For the past number of years our parish community has
been blessed to enter a float in the Benicia July 3rd
Torchlight Parade. If you never saw it, we had an 18wheeler with flatbed, a seven piece live band, a sound
system powered by a generator, and 50+ of our youths
singing and dancing. It was so impressive it won first place
two of the past three years. As you can imagine, to
coordinate all the equipment and participants requires
hundreds of man (and woman) hours and a bunch of lines of
causality to line up just perfectly. Unfortunately, this year
some of the pieces were not able to fall into place, so we will
not be having a float in the July 3rd Torchlight Parade this
year. I would like to thank our Saint Dominic Youth Group
(SDYG) and all who worked so hard over the years on our
float. If anyone would like to start a committee to lead a
2017 St. Dominic's Torchlight Float please contact the
parish office.
Finally, thank you to all of the volunteers that made this
year’s Cave Quest Vacation Bible Camp so successful. VBS
is one of the most popular programs for youth we offer, yet
requires a huge effort and energy to make it happen. We’ve
posted a video of the week in review on our kids page at
www.stdombenicia.org/gathering/kids-camps-and-events/
God bless you,
Fr. Jerome

Adult Confirmation
Begins this Summer!
Each year, Bishop Jaime Soto extends
an opportunity to receive the
Sacrament of Confirmation to
practicing, adult Catholics of the
Diocese of Sacramento, who have
received religious instruction, but for various reasons
were never confirmed.
The next celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation
will take place on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at St.
Mary's Church in Vacaville.
This opportunity is presented for those informed, adult
Catholics, who practice their faith in the parish
community. Because it is appropriate that each parish
offer formation for those who wish to be confirmed,
classes will begin in late September.
For further information, please contact Deacon Errol
Kissinger at (707) 335-4674 or
[email protected].
Classes will convene for six consecutive Sundays
beginning September 25 and end October 30, 2016.
Classes will be held 2:00-3:30PM in the Mary
Magdalene Room of the Ministry Center.
To participate the candidate must be a baptized Catholic,
who has received catechetical instruction at least up to
receiving the Eucharist (First Communion), be either
unmarried or in a marriage recognized as valid by the
Catholic Church, have a recent copy of their Baptismal

Good News Reflection
13th Sunday in Ordinary Time
1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21
Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-11
Galatians 5:1, 13-18
Luke 9:51-62
How to Handle Rejection
How well do you handle rejection? This Sunday's Gospel reading shows
us how the disciples reacted to rejection. They had entered a Samaritan
village ahead of Jesus, as he had asked them to do, to gather an
audience. But because the Samaritans had an anti-Jewish prejudice, they
didn't want to listen to Jesus. Their hearts were closed to anything he
might want to say. And so they missed an opportunity to experience the
Savior of the world.
How do you feel when close-hearted people reject your efforts to bring
Jesus to them? What do you feel like doing when someone refuses to
listen to you? Or when you try to explain a teaching of the Church but they
don't even want to try to understand?
Learning to
Walking Away with
Jesus
The disciples who traveled with Jesus didn't like rejection any more than we do. Two of his closest friends,
James and John, thought they would do Jesus a favor by asking, "Do you want us to zap them with a lightning
bolt?"
Jesus had previously told them to deal with rejection by wiping the dirt from their sandals and walking away.
Now he lived what he preached by walking away from these Samaritans. He didn't force his beliefs upon the
villagers, even though they definitely needed the truths he could have taught them.
There's a lot we have to give up when we follow Jesus, including the grudges we like to hold and our desire to
deal with rejection by retaliating. Why give others that kind of control over our moods? Wiping the dirt from our
shoes means we get rid of the bad feelings that steal our joy.
At the end of this scripture, Jesus explains that following him is always a forward motion. We're always walking
away from something -- away from rejection, away from our unloving reactions to prejudice, away from the close
-heartedness of those who are as yet unteachable -- and moving into the loving embrace of Christ.
To move forward, remember that the Holy Spirit is the only one who can prepare a heart to receive Jesus.
When we try to bring someone to Jesus and fail, we're not really failing; we're planting seeds rather than
harvesting the crop. Let the Holy Spirit finish the work while you move on to other fields.
Questions for Personal Reflection:
Who is frustrating you because he/she is not willing to change? What can you do to "walk away" lovingly and to
give yourself a break? (It might not be a literal departure.)
Questions for Family & Community Faith Sharing:
Share the story of a time when someone rejected you because you spoke the truth. How did you feel about it?
Did you walk away? How did (or might) the Holy Spirit work on that person's heart to prepare them to eventually
accept the truth?
