please let the Church Office know and we will include their names during our remembrance time.

For those who know Avery, she is an avid
sport fan and is a gifted athlete in her own right. She
loves football and if allowed would play on the boys
team. She plays soccer, softball, basketball, and is
part of a swimming and gymnastics team as well. She
also is involved in track and field. She was a
participant as a representative of the Girls 9-10
Division of Track Field in the Hershey Youth Outdoor
Championships held on June 30 and July 1, 2016 at
Millersville University, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
She did very well and the following is her results for
the three events she participated in:
200 m dash: 23rd in the Nation
400 m dash: 19th in the Nation
Long Jump: 6th in the Nation
From the Heart of the Pastor:
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus! For
those of you who have been attending worship over
the last month, you are aware of the fact that I have
been sharing a series on the Christian Life using
different metaphors from the Scripture to help us
answer the question, “What In the World Is a
Christian?” Just recently I shared a message entitled
“We Are Athletes Who Press On Toward The Goal.”
I want to piggy-back off that message and remind us
all that as Christians we are called to run the race set
before us and run for the glory of God!
Thus, I can fulfill my promise that I made in
the September Cresset and share with you some
exciting news about one of our young athletes.
This someone as promised is not one of our football
players. Her name is Avery Miller and I was
blessed to have the opportunity to sit down with
her and interview her for this article.
Avery recognizes that she has been blessed by
the Lord and she desires to do her best, using the gifts
and abilities that the Lord has given her. She makes
sure that she gives the Lord the credit and is a positive
witness for Christ not only as she is involved in sports
and but wherever she finds herself, whether she is at
home, school, church, or out in the community.
Because of her willingness to do so, she has become
one of Pastor Hal’s favorite Christian athletes! Move
over Eric Liddell and make place for a shining young
star!
Avery is the daughter of Brian and Laura
Miller, and the sister of Brenten and Austin Miller.
She is also the granddaughter of Paul and Ruth
McFarland. You may recall on Pentecost Sunday,
2016, Avery, along with her parents and brothers, was
baptized and became a member of our congregation.
If I remember correctly, I first met Avery when she
was brought to worship by her grandfather Paul along
with her cousins, his other granddaughters. She would
also come to Sunday School. But I really got to know
her better when I began serving at the Pastor for the
Allegany Campers. Her dad Brian, who presently
serves on the coaching staff for the Varsity Team, was
one of the coaches who helped with both teams, and
her brothers played for the Campers. Avery was one
of the faithful ones who would help me fill up water
bottles for the players and carry them out to them
when they needed water.
So please pray for Avery as she not only
participates is sporting events but also she prepares to
go China! She has a great future ahead of her. But
please pray for each of us as well. Pray that we too,
like Avery, may not only run the race that is set before
us but we do so by keeping our eyes focus on Jesus
the Author and Finisher of our faith!
Your fellow runner in the race,
Pastor Hal
Avery is a fourth grader at West Side
Elementary School. She is part of the Chinese
Emersion Program and her fifth grade class will go to
China next year. She has had the cultural opportunity
to visit Philadelphia and have interaction with the
Chinese community and is planning to be part of the
trip to New York as well. Besides being excited about
learning Chinese, she also enjoys science.

Bible Study will Resume in October
For the past five years, the best time for Pastor Hal to lead a Bible Study with a prayer
time has been Wednesday mornings. Therefore, our Bible Study Time will resume on
October 5th. For those of you who have faithfully attended in the past and are waiting for the
Study to resume again, Pastor Atkins wants to thank you in advance for your patience and
your understanding. He looks forward to being with you in October. Until then continue to
take time to pray for our congregation and our many ministries.

Church News (cont.)
2016 Charge Conference – October 11
Each year every United Methodist Church has a Charge Conference to share how
the congregation has been used by the Lord to carry out its mission in the past year and to
share the missional goals that have been set for the coming year. The Charge Conference is also a time to affirm
the financial responsibilities that the local congregation will have already approved at the Administrative Board
Meeting prior to the Charge Conference.
This year our Charge Conference will be held here at Cresaptown UMC on Tuesday, October 11, at
5:00 p.m. Once again we will be joined by the three congregations located along the 220 Corridor with us being
the host congregation. These three congregations are: McKendree of Potomac Park UMC, Rawlings UMC and
Dawson UMC.
We are asking all those who serve on the Administrative Board and Council of Ministries who are
available please attend our Charge Conference on October 11.
Sunday School Recognition Sunday – Sept. 18, 2016
Here we are affirming our Sunday school teachers and
Children’s church helpers at the 11 a.m. service.
A Word about Kairos
One of the many ministries which we at Cresaptown UMC are involved in and linked with is the Kairos
Prison Ministry. Kairos is a lay-led Christian ministry that changes prisoners’ by their participation on a 3 ½ day
weekend. This weekend is filled with carefully coordinated talks, discussions, chapel meditations, and music all
done by outside volunteers in a prison such as the Western Correctional Institution (WCI or the North Branch
Correctional Institution (NBCI), both of which are located on Route 220 between Cumberland and Cresaptown.
Kairos Prison Ministry was planning to hold its ninth prison ministry weekend at WCI on October 2023rd 2016. Due partly to not having enough volunteers who were able to be part of this weekend as well as not
having a key leadership position filled, the October Kairos Weekend has been canceled and will be rescheduled
for another time. The good news is that Kairos #2 at the North Branch will take place on November 10-13.
Pastor Hal asks that you keep both prisons in your prayers but especially the Kairos Weekend held in November
at the North Branch. Pray too that God would raise up more people from our Tri-State area who would be able
to be involved in Kairos Prison Ministry and serve as a volunteer on a weekend.

Dear Friends:
Dear Members of CUMC,
The Interfaith Community Pantry
wishes to acknowledge, with our thanks and
appreciation, your very generous check for
$500. Please thank the congregation for
this incredible gift. It will be an enormous
help in feeding those in need. Since the need
for support is with us throughout the year,
we are truly grateful to those who are so
faithful with their food and financial help.
Again, thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Joyce White, Secretary
On behalf of victims and survivors of domestic and sexual
crimes in our community, thank you for your gracious
donation! Each and every donation directly impacts the
efforts to assist domestic violence and sexual assault victims.
Unfortunately, the grants awarded to Family Crisis Resource
Center, Inc. (FCRC) do not fully support our programs.
Financial donations like yours fill in the gaps in a variety of
areas, including program costs, repairs, maintenance,
insurance, and equipment. Thank you for joining FCRC in
our mission: To assist victims and survivors of intimate
partner violence, rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse, child
abuse, and stalking and to reduce these crimes in our
community. The victims and survivors in Allegany County
depend on your support!
Warm Regards,
Sarah L. Kaiser, MS,
Executive D

Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled
Whenever I am troubled and lost in deep despair
I bundle all my troubles up and go to God in prayer.
I tell Him I am heartsick and lost and lonely, too.
That my mind is deeply burdened and I don’t know
what to do.
But I know He stilled the tempest and calmed the
angry sea
And I humbly ask if in His love
He’ll do the same for me.
And then I just Keep quiet and
think only thoughts of Peace.
And if I abide in Stillness my
“restless murmurings” cease.

Card received states: “There have been
angels in my life…angels who show up when
a kind word is needed, when a smile or an
act of caring can make a big difference. Yes
there have been angels in my life, and one of
them is you.”
Thank You So Much for the calls,

THE SHUT-IN OF THE MONTH…
This month we are beginning a new ministry to reach out
to our shut-ins. It will be called The Shut-In of the Month.
While we are seeking to remember all our shut-ins, especially
those who are in Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities,
with cards, visits and prayers, each month we will now focus on
a particular person.
The Shut-In of the Month for the Month of October
2016 is June Diehl. June is presently living at the Goodwill
Mennonite Home, 891 Dorsey Hotel Road, Grantsville, MD
21536.
June is a long-time member of our congregation. Due to
health reasons she moved to Goodwill, but after a few months
moved back home. After some time at her home in Cresaptown,
she realized it was important for her to go back to Goodwill
where she has lived now for the past few months. June would
truly appreciate hearing from you. During my last visit with her,
she sent greetings to the congregation and thanked me for our
continual prayers!

News Concerning Our New Bishop
On September 1, 2016, our newly elected
Bishop, the Rev. La Trelle Miller Easterling, began her
official term. Just thirteen days later, on September 14,
2016, Pastor Atkins had the joy of being part of a
gathering for the Pastors of the CumberlandHagerstown District where we had the opportunity to
meet together and welcome our new Bishop. The
meeting was held at First Church in Berkley Springs,
WV. We had a time of worship and prayer together
along with a meal. We heard a powerful testimony
from Bishop Easterling who shared about her
upbringing and how she is proud to called a “Jesus
Freak,” a term that comes from the Jesus People
Movement of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Bishop
Easterling is Christ-centered, Spirit led and holistic in
her approach to life and ministry. She demonstrates
passion for social justice issues and has a heart for the
social and spiritual needs of the people who reside
within the borders of our Baltimore-Washington
Conference. We found she has a listening ear to the
Spirit and to people. Please continue to keep her in
your prayers.
Join Pastor Hal Atkins on the local Crop
Walk on Sunday, October 9, at 2 p.m. If
you are not able to walk with him, please
support Pastor Hal prayerfully and
financially as he and others walk to end
hunger. If you are interested in walking or
supporting him and need more information
please contact him and let him know.
While our local walk helps to end hunger
worldwide, most of the money raised during
walks in Allegany County remains in our
area to support the growing need. Thank
you for your help!
