I am composing this report while on a Probus Trip to Norfolk Island.
This is a combined trip also involving members of Campbelltown Probus
and would have to be one the most enjoyable group trips that Robin and I
have experienced.
The camaraderie so common on our day outings has been extended to
this longer trip. Members of both Clubs are polite, helpful and happy. I
have not seen one upset person on our trip at any stage. We have been
looked after very well by our hosts and have found out a lot about the
people and places on Norfolk Island.
Our Club members are very grateful for the efforts others put into
organising these extended outings. For this trip I would like to thank
Ruth and Ray Pipet. The results of their efforts are exemplary. Another
good job well done!
I look forward to seeing you at the coming meeting.

TREASURER
Wim Reyntjes
As we have a number of new members, and as a reminder to some of our
other members, please note that when payments are made for any of our
functions, theatre outings or any other of our activities, you can do so in
the following ways:
By direct deposit on line to our bank account. Details of our account
appear each month in Pro-Buzz. This method is preferred as it saves you
and I carrying around cash, it provides you with an immediate record,
and is the most secure method.
* By cheque which should have noted on the reverse details of what the
payment is for;
* By cash at the meeting.
If you elect to pay by cheque or cash, you should place it in an
envelope with your name, amount enclosed, and the details of the
payment on the outside. Please try to plan ahead with the exact amount,
as it is often difficult to give change at the meeting.
In accordance with normal business practice, receipts are issued for
cash payments only, and will be available at the following month’s
meeting. The contents of envelopes are checked by two people at every
meeting to ensure the contents as shown on the front of the envelope
agree.

Each month Pro Buzz will have a code (usually two or three letters) which will enable those paying by direct
deposit to identify what their payment is for. When you pay by direct deposit, the bank will ask for a reference
which will help the recipient (Probus) to identify what the payment is for. Please ensure the codes shown in Pro
Buzz are used. An example appears in each issue of Pro Buzz and also on the Club’s website.
If you omit a code I can usually work out what it is for. However there have been occasions where I have
had to guess. For example, an $80 payment could be for one theatre outing, or for two other outings of say $50
and $30. If I incorrectly allocate your payment, and one of your intended functions is fully booked with a
waiting list, you could miss out.
If I can help anyone who is unsure of how to process a direct deposit let me know and I will help walk you
through it.

CARD SHARPS
Margot Shugg
Our first October get together was held at Margot’s on the 8th, where eight members turned up for some of our
usual uproarious fun. It’s been decided to hold our second cards afternoon on the 22nd at Maggie’s house.
We now have thirteen members, which is a comfortable number for the time being and no, we’re not
superstitious.
Q &A
with Maurien McNevin
Question: Did you know that tomatoes were once considered poisonous?
Answer: They still are. The tomato is native to Central and South America and is a
member of the nightshade family. Every part of the plant except the fruit (what we call a
tomato) is indeed toxic.
THEATRE
“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with
another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”

The King and I
Once again Probus Members were treated to a brilliant afternoon
of Musical Theatre, this time the lavish production of The King and I at the
Opera House. The music and colourful costumes were spellbinding. Well known
songs such as Getting to Know You,
Whistle a Happy Tune, Hello Young
Lovers to mention a few were met with
rapturous applause from a delighted
audience. The highlight of the
production came when stars Lisa McCune and Teddy Tahu Rhodes performed
the Shall We Dance sequence. Judging by all the smiling faces as we made our
way home along our magnificent harbour this was another Probus outing to
remember.

THE WHARF REVIEW
On Saturday evening 27th September, several members of Leumeah Probus attended The Wharf
Revue at Casula Powerhouse.
A political satire performed by four very talented actors (three male and one female), it featured
past and present politicians. One memorable skit depicted Scott Morrison in bed with his wife who
was obviously in an amorous mood. Scott, however, was not willing to admit anything or make any
sort of commitment.
Also featured was the Palmer United Party and a blank-faced Jacqui Lambie and a group of political lobbyists making
a pilgrimage to Canberra (based on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales). One of the male actors did a very clever impersonation
of Paul Keating in typically sarcastic Keating fashion. A thoroughly entertaining evening enjoyed by all.
John Cashel
A Tribute to Tommy Tycho
The Tribute to Tommy Tycho Concert held at the Sydney Town Hall on 1st October was a great event. We
experienced great performances from Bernard Walz (pianist and conductor) and soloists Jacki Love
(vocalist), Adam Scicluna (tenor vocalist), Ian Cooper (his violin was almost talking) and David Parsons
(almost 82-year-old trumpeter) plus the fabulous 26-piece Good Old Days Concert Orchestra.
We received an insight into the wonderful talents of Maestro Tommy Tycho, realising how lucky we
were that he shared his talents with us. The performance, arranged and orchestrated by Tommy Tycho,
was presented by performers whose careers were greatly influenced by the Maestro. Tommy’s daughter Vicki spoke of
her childhood days growing up with music, providing various snippets about her humble father. I am sure all those who
attended enjoyed the two hours entertainment.

WALK REPORT
$
John Vickery
On Monday 22nd September the weather was fine, some cloud, but definitely no rain as 13 walkers boarded the
train for Circular Quay. The group was small, but the enthusiasm was positive.
We were fortunate to be the only passengers on the #504 bus as we began our journey from Circular Quay to
Iron Cove Bridge – fortunate as the chatter we generated was deafening.
The walk was along the foreshores of Iron Cove and Parramatta River, and the streets of Balmain and
Birchgrove. There was plenty of history to take in, interesting houses, buildings and parks to see with good
harbour views, and plenty of steps. By the time we arrived at Birchgrove Wharf, most of us had negotiated just
over 400 steps – some did less by taking a lift adjacent to one of the sets of stairs.
The walk ended at Birchgrove wharf, in time to catch the 12:30 ferry back to Circular Quay, with the
majority of the group deciding to lunch at the Orient Hotel in the Rocks.
Another great walk – thanks Kevin, and thank you to all walkers for making it a great day.
FUTURE WALKS
SCULPTURES BY THE SEA
The walk has been organized for 27th
October 2014 and is about 2.5 km
long, beginning at the southern end of
Bondi Beach. We will see a variety of
sculptures by Australian and world
renowned artists. This walk is to the
same location that we attended last
year, where the sculptures are located
along the “Bondi to Tamarama Walk”,
which has been transformed into a
temporary 2 km long sculpture park.
At your pace, you are free to take a
leisurely walk from Bondi to
Tamarama and on to Restrooms, >>
which are available at both Tamarama and Bronte.
Summary
Date of walk
Monday 27th October 2014
Rendezvous time and 8:19 am Airport Line train at Leumeah, second carriage if possible. Change trains
at Central (change from Platform 21 to 24) for the 9:29 or 9:32am train to Bondi
travel mode
Junction. At 10:07am we catch the #380 bus from Bondi Junction Interchange
Stand A1 for a 10 minute journey to Campbell Parade, Bondi Beach.
Walking distance
Estimated time

Transport
Coffee/Lunch
IMPORTANT
There is a bus terminal towards the southern end of Bronte Park where buses run
frequently to Bondi Junction, then on to the City for the return journey.
About 2.5 km
2+ hours + morning tea and lunch stop
Medium. Walk is on mostly sealed paths with some grassed areas and some
beach sand. There are lots of steps (both up and down) but all are formed and
most have handrails Covered shoes with good grip are essential. A walking pole
would be beneficial.
Train and bus at your expense. Please note that the bus trip is a prepaid service –
those who DO NOT hold a Seniors Card will need to purchase a ticket at the PrePay machine at the bus interchange.
Bring or purchase – there are coffee venues along Campbell Parade at Bondi
Beach. At Bronte Beach there are covered seating facilities for lunch in Bronte
Park. There are also some cafes on Bronte Road for those wishing to buy lunch.
As we walk for several hours, you need to be reasonably fit and be able to
maintain a steady walking pace.
GARDEN APPRECIATION GROUP
Barbara Reyntjes
Wow – talk about Spring hitting with a vengeance! Just three weeks ago there were some early signs that
Spring might be approaching. Then almost overnight our garden burst into a mass of colour with fresh coloured
leaves on our maples and the natives coming into full flower. The camellias and azaleas also burst into colour. I
just love Spring!
The report last month mentioned our next garden outing details, but due to a glitch somewhere the
information failed to appear in last month’s Pro Buzz.
Here it is again:
The Nan Tien Temple at Berkeley on Thursday 16th October.
Meet at Wests car park at 10:00 am.to travel by car. We will car pool where possible, depending
on the number of members on the day and the vehicles available.
The outing we would normally have in November clashes with our trip to the Hunter Valley, so there will be
no garden visit next month.
Something which I don’t like about gardening is getting the weeds out of the lawn. However I have invested
in a marvellous weeding tool which means no more bending or getting on your knees to dig out those
dandelions and other flatweeds.
Fiskars Weed puller is a great invention for removing weeds, such as dandelions, in a quick and environmentally sound manner. The tool is easy and comfortable to use and requires no digging or bending down in
non-ergonomic positions. The Weed Puller’s deep-reaching stainless steel claws grab the weed’s root from
multiple directions, and pull it out of the ground – no toxic chemicals are needed. The handy ejection system
ensures a clean, efficient result. (I should get paid for this.) It costs around $60 at garden centers/hardware
stores and is worth every cent.
If you haven’t already done so, look at your favourite garden centre and you will be spoilt for choice to plant
seedlings either in the garden or hanging baskets/pots. Your creativity is only limited by your imagination. >>
