INTENSIVE COURSE IN
Geriatric
Medicine
& Board Review
September 9-12, 2015
Hyatt Regency Century Plaza
Los Angeles, California
Words from the Chair
Greetings!
When the UCLA Intensive Course in Geriatric Medicine
began 32 years ago, the average life expectancy in the
United States was 74.6 years. Today, thanks in large
part to advances in better treatment and prevention
of disease, it is almost 80 years. Now more than ever,
people are living longer, more productive lives. Medical
professionals need to be prepared to diagnose and
treat complex age-related conditions such as dementia,
osteoporosis, delirium, and frailty, as well as be familiar
with the unique presentations of common disease in the
elderly.
With one of the world’s premier programs in Geriatric
Medicine, UCLA has provided education and training
to thousands of health professionals on the care of older
patients. We draw from the expertise of the vast faculty
of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and
the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, consistently
ranked the Best in the West hospital by the U.S. News and
World Report since 1990, as well as nationally-renowned
guest speakers. The course faculty will impart attendees
with the current standards of care and cutting-edge
developments in the field of aging. The topics for this
year’s course include updates in:

This year, our Solomon Awardee/Speaker will be Stephanie Studenski, MD, MPH, Chief
of the Longitudinal Studies Section of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and Director
of the Baltimore Longitudinal Studies on Aging, one of the nation’s longest and most
prestigious studies of aging. The renowned neuroscientist Claudia Kawas, MD, Principal
Investigator of the 90+ Study of the oldest old will be the Cherkin Awardee/Speaker.
Through findings from their respective research studies, Drs. Studenski and Kawas will
provide course attendees with important insights into such topics as balance and mobility,
prevention of dementia, and lifestyle factors that lead to successful aging.
The venue for the 2015 course will be the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, conveniently
located in close proximity to the UCLA campus in Westwood, shopping centers and
restaurants of Century City and Beverly Hills, and the famous beaches and boardwalk of
Santa Monica. It is centrally located between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
and downtown Los Angeles.
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the 32nd UCLA Intensive Course in Geriatric
Medicine, I am looking forward to personally welcoming you to Los Angeles in
September. Thank you for considering to join us!
Course Overview
O
ne of the longest-running courses of its kind, the UCLA Intensive Course
in Geriatric Medicine is a four-day course and board review in geriatric
medicine that emphasizes an evidence-based and functional approach to the
comprehensive care of older adults. It is designed for health professionals who
wish to enhance their ability to care for older adults, and for physicians who are
preparing for the initial certification or re-certification examinations in Geriatric
Medicine offered by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the
American Board of Family Practice (ABFP).
ӹӹ The 32nd Annual UCLA Intensive Course is presented concurrently with
the 2015 Intensive Course in Geriatric Pharmacy and Board Review, and
participants may attend sessions in either course.
ӹӹ Speaker presentations and supplementary materials are provided in a
searchable and annotatable PDF syllabus.
ӹӹ Over nine hours of optional interactive board review sessions are offered.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:
ӹӹ Identify the basic principles of geriatric medicine
ӹӹ Apply principles of geriatric assessment, geriatric pharmacology,
rehabilitation, and long-term care to the patient care setting
ӹӹ Understand key aspects of neurology, cardiology, psychiatry, urology,
pharmacology, and rheumatology as they apply to older patients
ӹӹ Identify psychosocial problems and ethical issues in decision-making, and
formulate an approach to these problems
ӹӹ Comprehend the major geriatric syndromes such as incontinence, pain
management, osteoporosis, and explain the appropriate geriatric medicine
approaches to them

Disclosure Statement
The FDA has issued a concept paper which classifies commercial support of scientific and educational programs
as promotional unless it can be affirmed that the program is “truly independent” and free of commercial
influence. In addition to independence, the FDA requires that nonpromotional, commercially supported
education be objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous. The policy further states that all potential conflicts
of interest of the CME staff and faculty be fully disclosed to the program’s participants. In addition, Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education policy now mandates that the provider adequately manages all
identified potential conflicts of interest prior to the program. We at UCLA fully endorse the letter and spirit of
these concepts.
