Ted Baker WELCOME TO FASHION IN THE BIG LITTLE CITY This month marks the start of NZ Fashion Festival (24 Feb – 4 Mar) and the inaugural ‘Fashion in the BIG little City’ event (Sat 3 Mar), brought to you by Resene. The BIG little City believes in fashion. We believe that like fashion in the world’s greatest cities (London, New York, Paris, Milan) fashion inspires us, it keeps us connected to colour, the seasons, trends and textures – it allows us to celebrate our own individual style and our diversity. Whether it’s admiring fashion on someone else, enjoying a runway show at an event like NZ Fashion Festival or treating yourself to some fabulous new thing. Fashion is a fun way to keep up with what’s new and exciting, in awe of beautiful colours, rich new ideas and provides that note of allimportant glamour to our lives. This is why, on Saturday 3 March, we will be celebrating the very best of fashion in our city, with over 100 of the CBD’s favourite retailers providing amazing offers, 8 FREE on-street fashion shows, a team of paparazzi roving the streets looking for our best dressed citizens and an end of day event with celebrity guest judges to help award our ‘best dressed’ guys and girls with prizes. If that wasn’t enough to get you itching to turn the pages and find out more, we’re also giving one lucky visitor the chance to walk away with a $10,000 Ultimate Fashion Weekend for 2 in the City. So go on, get inspired, have some fun and best of all get amongst it and participate …because this time (unlike NZ Fashion Week – which is closed to the public), both these fabulous events are for you. WWW.BIGLITTLECITY.CO.NZ Fashion Fever HITS TOWN The fashion temperature has risen another whole notch in Auckland city. There’s an undeniable sense of style like never before as you walk the streets – thanks to sophisticated changes occurring almost daily in the CBD. The city, with its waterfront redevelopment, new uber-urban Britomart precinct, local and international designers, restyled streets and new art gallery has taken a huge leap forward in cosmopolitan standards of style and fashion. With more fashion retailers and slick hangouts than ever before Auckland City has come of age and the fashion crowds are flocking. So what’s making our city so hot? Exactly why are fashionistas falling so feverishly in love with it? At the heart of all great fashion capitals lie the streets of the CBD. Walking past the cafes, galleries and retail stores of Auckland’s central city it’s easy not to pay attention to the subcultures emerging here every day. But it’s right at the heart of our urban environment that popular culture, entertainment, creativity and youth are combining to create tomorrow’s trends. And it’s these distinctly unique New Zealand trends that have attracted fashion insiders to our retail personality. Like the great cosmopolitan centres of London, Paris, New York, Milan and Tokyo, downtown Auckland has become the country’s answer for style-conscious consumers. From WORLD’s dramatic colour blocking to Karen Walker’s off-beat glamour it’s where you can get a taste of kiwi originality at its best. International style icons from Beyonce & Jay-Z, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to Sir Richard Branson have all chosen the CBD to shop while here on business. Amazingly, if you want to go shopping in downtown Auckland today you have a palette of over 280 of the best fashion retailers to choose from. To help you accessorise your look there are 38 jewellery retailers, 24 shoe shops (girlie heaven!), 19 personal accessory specialists and 3 large department stores. Oh the joy of living in a fashion capital. Auckland has long held the title of the country’s fashion capital. This is where the majority of our leading designers are based, where most launch their first inner city flagship store, where creation of many of the finest locally-made fashion garments takes place and where fashion magazines are published – all generating significant income, as well as making this the stylish and chic place it is to live. Add to that glamorous fashion events and trade fairs such as New Zealand Fashion Week and New Zealand Fashion Festival (open to the public and being held between 24 Feb – 4 Mar 2012) that now take place on our waterfront every year; international luxury brands bringing their beautiful retail stores to Queen Street and the fact you can spot more stylish people between Vulcan Lane and The Viaduct than anywhere else in the country and you can see why Auckland is officially our fashionably attractive city. A place of inspiration. Right on your doorstep. Britomart Precinct High Street DISTRICt – The Original Home of NZ Fashion Right at the heart of any fashion destination are the core streets where fashion professionals and fashion lovers instinctively converge, groundswell begins and labels are literally born. For London you could argue it’s Carnaby Street, New York Seventh Avenue. For Auckland this has traditionally been in the form of a flourishing sub-culture in the small but ohso influential High Street. The area along High Street, Vulcan Lane and O’Connell Street is the place to head if the best New Zealand labels are your passion. It’s in this precinct that many of our New Zealand A-List designers have started their careers, with their original flagship stores now destination stops for visitors to our city, and country, as the world discovers their brands. In true intimate kiwi style it’s not unheard of to find yourself sitting right next to one of these famous designer names drinking a coffee at the cafe table next to you or to meet them in store. Zambesi was one of the first to open in the uber-cool cobbled Vulcan Lane, followed by other local heavyweights including Helen Cherry, WORLD, Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester, Moochi, contemporary tailors Crane Brothers, Strangely Normal, Ruby, and most recently Andrea Moore and Turet Knuefermann’s TK Store. These New Zealand originals have also been joined by Australia’s designer fashion label MARCS and high-end shoe store for those with a serious passion, Ashley Ardrey. BRITOMART PRECINCT - The Hip New Destination The hot new area of town right now is the new Britomart precinct. Its stylish design and leading fashion brands attracted our early adopters from the minute it opened in 2009 and since then the area has continued to add a whole new exciting level to shopping in the heart of the city – with everything from the hip bike shops to valet parking. Symbolic of the fashion elegance at Britomart is the Atrium on Takutai – full of retail names previously unseen in New Zealand and designed with stunning talking point ‘green walls’ - largescale vertical plantings which are watered with harvested rainwater. Its impressive drawcards include luxury fragrance and cosmetic brands Jo Malone, M.A.C and L’Occitane, high-end sportswear stores Nike and Lululemon Athletica and debut New Zealand store for London Karen Walker TREND WATCH BOX This season’s five trends to look out for are: 1 ‘40s Glamour There’s a definite sense of the 1940s in store with the return of fitted knitwear, the high-waisted pant and pencil skirts. 2 Great Coats The must-have garment of the season is one beautiful coat – it takes you anywhere. 3 Colour Watch out for a palette of colour arriving in store to warm your winter mood – reds, mustards, blues and greens. 4 Boots & Hats Super sexy knee- length boots and the return of hats - from berets to cloches - add a sense of European glamour to Winter. 5 Sparkle and shine A touch of the old razzle dazzle – sequins, Ted Baker Smith & Caugheys plays host to Art Deco theatres, beautiful high end department store experiences, luxury stores and many great everyday accessible chain store brands. The experience of shopping at Smith & Caughey’s with its extensive cosmetic department, famously expert lingerie fitters, national and international high-end fashion labels and great powder rooms can only be found in Queen Street. Similarly the luxury brands of Dior, Burberry, Loewe and Tiffany & Co are all part of the exclusive DFS Galleria Customhouse shopping experience. Queen Street is also home to some of the biggest stand alone fashion names in the business. Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Lacoste anchor the lower end of the street with some of the most luxurious stores in town. They sit alongside other international labels of distinction like Ermenegildo Zegna and Ben Sherman. And for those with a taste for style, but not a budget for big name fashion brands, Queen Street also hosts all of our well known accessible fashion chain stores including Glassons, Dotti, Cotton On and Supre. Plus you’ll find directional fashion designer Ted Baker. New Zealand shoe designer Kathryn Wilson has also joined Britomart with her pop up shoe box store. As have iconic Brazilian flip flop brand Havaianas with The Concept Store, plus Co-Lab, Curate, MADE, Coucou (famously stocking London’s TopShop, ASOS, Zara and H&M!), Storeroom, Coop (in its groovy shipping container shop), Onitsuka Tiger, Laundromat Boutique and Debut. And, as if that were not enough of a smorgasbord, Tyler Street is about to see Zambesi, WORLD and Kate Sylvester move in this month. And of course, it’s just a short walk from here to whip along the waterfront to Trelise Cooper’s Quay Street store on Princes Wharf. trends interpreted with style at the likes of Max, Country Road, Overland and Politix and all the usual surf and skatewear brands; Billabong, Quicksilver, Rip Curl. Plus the Sunglass Bar and iconic swimwear specialists Blue Dude. Lorne Street – The Arts Precinct Lorne Street is known as the arts and culture precinct of the BIG little City, with fashion and art so inextricably related it is well worth a visit. It’s home to over 10 galleries including the wonderful new Auckland Art Gallery on the corner of Kitchener and Wellesley Streets, the Gow Langsford Gallery and OREXART. Scotties with its imported fashion labels still anchors the street as one of Auckland’s most exclusive and long-standing fashion stores, founded and owned by fashion doyenne Marilyn Sainty. The Arts Precinct also offers the delightful Auckland Library and venues including our Town Hall, Classic Comedy Bar, Basement Theatre, Civic Theatre, Aotea Square and the wonderful new Q Theatre. Take in a play or musical in the Arts Precinct, immerse yourself for an afternoon or evening and remember what it is that makes Gucci Queen Street M D IN E Ti A m N el es ew s Ze al a nd de sig . n, ta ilo re d to fit . WWW.BIGLITTLECITY.CO.NZ NZ FASHION FESTIVAL SASHAYS UP QUEENS WHARF This month the biggest public fashion event in the country takes place on the Auckland waterfront. Created by the organisers of NZ Fashion Week, NZ Fashion Festival is the show for anyone who just simply loves fashion. Following an overwhelmingly positive response from the public, New Zealand Fashion Festival returns for its third year this month. This time with an even bigger and better format, and a new location at Shed 10 on Queens Wharf. Notable this year is the extensive programme of events happening across the city. From High Streets’ First Light event on Friday 24 February, to the ‘Long Lunch’ being held this year in Britomart on Friday 2nd March and Heart of the City’s day of fashion – an event with support of over 100 retailers on Saturday 3 March. Add to this the everpopular Designer Garage Sale at Queens Wharf on both Saturday 3, and Sunday 4 March, and suddenly there is a dimension to NZ Fashion Festival that we’ve not seen before. A delightful retail and cultural programme that makes it even more accessible, attractive and all importantly possible for people to come along and be involved. The exciting week of style seminars, fashion shows, retail opportunities, VIP parties, beautiful people and great sounds is your chance to be part of the style and creativity that makes Auckland the fashion capital of New Zealand. “This is a totally inclusive event for everyone,” says event organiser Myken Stewart. “It’s a publically ticketed event which means you can attend any seminar or runway show you want. Anyone with a passion for clothes, makeup, shoes and style can come along. It’s fresh and it’s fun.” “Plus, unlike industry events where buyers are buying a year ahead, all the fashions in Fashion Festival are the current Autumn/ Winter season,” she adds. “So everything you see on the runways will be in store for you to purchase the very next day.” Stewart is part of the same team that brought New Zealand Fashion Week to Auckland. When they realised how much interest there was from Aucklanders in the event, and how much they would love to have come to Fashion Week (which is an invitation only trade show - albeit a very sexy one) they decided to launch the festival in the opposite season so all could attend. “It’s also the perfect way to get a great overview of what is happening this season, and how to style it, before you go out and spend your money,” adds Myken. If you’ve never attended a runway show or fashion seminar before, prepare to be excited. pRESENTS UNVEILING THE NEW SEASON FRIDAY 24TH FEBRUARY LAUNcH OF NEW zEALAND FASHION FESTIVAL pLUS DESIGNERS’ NEW SEASON cOLLEcTIONS IN-STORE. Just some of the labels taking part this year include Sabatini, Chaos & Harmony, BLAK, Kagi, Lonely Hearts, Turet Knuefermann, Andrea Moore & Co, Ioanna Kourbela, Debra Fallowfield Contemporary Jeweller, Laundromat. Auckland’s High Street district has a long and proud history as the melting pot for much of New Zealand’s best modern creative culture. Through the years, the streets and laneways in this inner city precinct have fostered many of our greatest fashion talents, shaping the world-class style we see on our streets today. It’s the home of the new and first seen. To celebrate this unique fashion pedigree and kick off NZ Fashion Festival, the High Street Guild in partnership with BIG little City, brings you Auckland’s First Light, a free event welcoming purveyors of style to come and shop, socialise and experience the High St district on Friday 24 February from midday. First Light celebrates the new and the fresh, embracing High Streets traditions of “starting here” and being the soul of Auckland’s fashion, retail and nightlife. It will be a magical evening when the district’s fashion houses, retailers, restaurants, bars and galleries all open their doors, hold in-store events and showcase the best of the Autumn/ Winter’s fashion, food and culture. The streets themselves, usually already soaked in atmosphere, will also be buzzing BE IN TO WIN AN Ultimate Fashion Weekend tŚĂƚĞǀĞƌLJŽƵƐĞĞŽŶƚŚĞĐĂƚǁĂůŬĂƚE&ĂƐŚŝŽŶ&ĞƐƟǀĂůĐĂŶďĞŝŶLJŽƵƌǁĂƌĚƌŽďĞƚŚŝƐLJĞĂƌǁŝƚŚ&ĂƐŚŝŽŶŝŶƚŚĞ /'ůŝƩůĞŝƚLJ͕ĂŽŶĞĚĂLJƉƌĞŵŝĞƌĞǀĞŶƚ͘'ĞƚƚŚĞůĂƚĞƐƚƚƌĞŶĚƐĨƌŽŵLJŽƵƌĨĂǀŽƵƌŝƚĞĚĞƐŝŐŶĞƌƐĂŶĚƚŚĞďĞƐƚĚĞĂůƐŽŶ ĞdžƋƵŝƐŝƚĞŐĂƌŵĞŶƚƐƚŽŵĂŬĞLJŽƵƌǁĂƌĚƌŽďĞƉŽƉ͘zŽƵĂůƐŽŚĂǀĞƚŚĞĐŚĂŶĐĞƚŽǁŝŶĂŶhůƟŵĂƚĞ&ĂƐŚŝŽŶtĞĞŬĞŶĚ ĨŽƌƚǁŽǁŽƌƚŚΨϭϬ͕ϬϬϬƉůƵƐĨŽƵƌĐŚĂŶĐĞƐƚŽǁŝŶΨϭ͕ϬϬϬĂƚƚŚĞďĞƐƚͲĚƌĞƐƐĞĚĐŽŵƉĞƟƟŽŶ͘ &ŽƌŵŽƌĞŝŶĨŽƌŵĂƟŽŶǀŝƐŝƚďŝŐůŝƩůĞĐŝƚLJ͘ĐŽ͘Ŷnj HOC1340_fashion_thirdpg_NZHS_V4.indd 1 10/02/12 5:05 PM 12 fashion in the city. 23 february 2012.
