Beautification/Historical “Yard of the Month” Contest
Brownstown residents have some of the finest looking yards Downriver. Why not show yours off by entering the
Brownstown “Yard of the Month” competition? The “Yard of the Month” contest is a way of recognizing those residents who go above and beyond in maintaining their property.
For the months of June through September, members of the Beautification/Historical Commission will select nominated
yards the best reflect “curb appeal” that include the following criteria:
Maintenance
Design and Landscaping
Lawns should be healthy, neatly mowed and edged
Trees and shrubs pruned and trimmed
Planting should be healthy
Minimum weeds in flowerbeds
Yard free of debris and clutter
Use of Color and or texture
Creativity, such as baskets, pots, yard art, feeders etc.
Balance in keeping with home and lot size
Overall attractiveness
All planting must be living, no artificial plants
One yard will be selected each month, June through September. The same property cannot receive the “Yard of the
Month” more than once a year. Winners will receive a special “Yard of the Month” sign to display in their yard, have
their yard featured in photos on the Township website, and receive a $25 gift certificate ...and get bragging rights!
To enter the contest, you must nominate your property. Just email a photo of your yard in all its glory, along with your
name, address and phone number to [email protected]. Yards will be judged the third week of each month. Remember,
to take the best photos, try shooting at eye level and also take photos at the first or last light of day. Midday sun can turn
delicate planting into stark shadows and glare. Good luck!

live to serve, but find themselves working for a continual series of unsuccessful masters, from T. Rex to Napoleon.
Without a master to grovel for, the Minions fall into a deep depression. But one
minion, Kevin, has a plan; accompanied

fantasy, set in a world where the dinosaurs never went extinct, an amiable
young Apatosaurus named Arlo (voiced
by Raymond Ochoa) loses his father in a

with his family, and befriends a prehistoric human child known as Spot (Jack
Bright) along the way.Peter Sohn directed this heartwarming Pixar adventure, with Jeffrey Wright, Frances

Our Township Roads – What You Need To Know
a message from Supervisor Andrew Linko
The Charter Township of Brownstown is one of 1,240 townships in Michigan.
Townships provide essential services to over 51% of Michigan’s citizens. A significant difference between a city and a township is that townships do not own any
roads and they do not have the authority to perform maintenance and/or construction on roads. Townships don’t receive any of the tax revenue collected for road
purposes as outlined by Michigan law, Public Act 51 of 1951. Only cities and
counties receive those funds.
The McNitt Act of 1931 transferred authority and responsibility of roads from
townships and gave that authority to the County DPW and/or County Road Commissions. In Wayne County the Department of Public Services is responsible for
the all of its township roads with the exception of state owned roads or highways.
It is Wayne County’s statutory responsibility to keep our roads in a safe condition.
Brownstown township officials has been informed Wayne County does not have
sufficient resources to take care of all the road needs and concentrates on main
county roads that handle large volumes of traffic. Recognizing Wayne County’s
financial limitations and the need to address our road conditions, the Brownstown
Township Board of Trustees authorized our engineers, Wade Trim, to conduct a
township wide study of all subdivision roads beginning Spring 2016. This is
known as a PASER study (Pavement Surface and Evaluation Rating). PASER is a
recognized simple, efficient and consistent method for evaluating and identifying
individual road conditions.
Township officials will utilize the results of the PASER study to lobby Wayne
County and the State of Michigan for funding to begin the ongoing repair and
maintenance of roads in Brownstown. We have met with residents and Homeowner
Association representatives to inform and establish dialogue regarding this important issue. Please call the Supervisor’s Office at (734) 675-0071 if you would
like us to attend your HOA meeting to discuss these issues.
