FOR YOUR INFORMATION···
YOUR POTE’S
NOTES
THE CHIEF
RABBAN
by Dave Brady Sr.
I want to thank all were able
to attend the 2014 Nile Shrine
Installation of Officers, and
dinner. A special thank you to
our pianist Nancy O’Neil for
her music and Johnny Cohen
for his beautiful fresh flower
arrangements. To the rest of
the team, thank you for your
volunteerism and friendship.
You all made the evening truly
memorable for me and for
Lady Cyndi.
Except for a few, most of us
have our priorities in the right place and know what
we, as Shriners, are all about; the care of a child in
need. I have observed that some nobles have lost their
focus on who, and what, we are all about. They have
let personal feelings get in the way of good judgment
to the extent of creating a toxic, and hostile, environment within the Nile Shrine. Some have left on their
own because the election did not go their way. Some
have resigned their positions in their Unit feeling that
they are not appreciated. Is this what being a Noble
Shriner is all about? Shame on you!
Focus should always be on the Shrine Hospital for
Children and not on self. That is our mission; that is
why we put on fund raisers. You should be spending
your full attention on the health of a child and not
act like one. Turn that negative energy into a positive
energy of support. Remember, IT’S NOT ABOUT
YOU! It’s about bringing quality of life to a child.
Let’s move on and focus on upcoming events that will
educate and entertain us. On February 8th,prior to the
Oriental Band Crab Feed, the Nile Shrine will have
its’ UNIT AND CLUB SEMINAR. The Seminar will
begin at 8 am with coffee and doughnuts, followed by
a program lead by Chief Rabban, Dave Brady.
On Wednesday, February 12th please plan to attend
the OPEN Stated Meeting with your Lady and guests.
Lady Cyndi and I are planning a FUN Mardi Gras
event with a special, history making Honor Guard for
the evening. You will NOT want to miss this!
Most importantly, my Pote’s door is ALWAYS open to
suggestions. Please feel free to contact me in personally, via email or phone if you have any questions or
concerns about the Nile Shrine Center or ideas of
things we could do better.
I am looking forward to serving and working with you
all this year.
Our annual Kids Christmas
Party took place on Sunday,
December 15th. All the kids
had a good time with the
Magic show, singing Christmas carols, and greeting Santa
Claus and his reindeer. They
each received a circus fez full
of candy, a beanie baby, a
clown nose and a balloon plus
a chance to sit on Santa’s lap.
We had a great New Year’s Eve party on December
31st with a DJ and Telemus the Magician and Mind
Reader for entertainment. Everyone who attended had
a great time.
The installation for our 2014 newly appointed and
elected officers took place on Saturday January 11th.
Congratulations to all and have a great year.
The 2014 divan hit the ground running after the installation with traveling to club and unit installations and
installations at other Temples.
Don’t forget the Annual Oriental Band Crab Feed on
Saturday, February 8th at 6 pm. Tickets are $30 per
person.
If you have not been to a Shrine Club meeting, please
consider attending one near you. If you are not sure
where the closest one is located, contact the Nile office
for when, where, and what time they meet, or look in
SWN. Here is a list of the Shrine Clubs:
West Seattle SC (Burien),
Renton SC (Renton),
Olympic Peninsula SC (Sequim),
Kitsap County SC (Bremerton),
Whidbey Island SC (Oak Harbor),
Skagit Valley SC (Mount Vernon),
Northwest SC (Bellingham),
Eastside SC (Bellevue).
Karen and I look forward to our continued travels to
club and unit meetings this year. Until next month,
take care.

ATTENTION NILE
MEMBERS:
This is important. Please forward to others.
Once again it is fund raising time for Beni Hassan
Shrine Temple #84 in Lynnwood. Each year they
launch their annual Money Drive and it creates plenty
of confusion. To assure the Nile members we have outlined some information that will be helpful should you
or someone you know receive a monetary solicitation.
• They are a legitimate 501c3 in Washington State
• They do not contribute to the Shriners Hospitals for
Children, they support their own local philanthropy
• The Nile Shrine Center DOES NOT phone solicit
• This year we learned that the solicitor is “Stephanie”
calling for donations on behalf of Beni Hassan Shrine
Temple. That is not Stephanie from the Nile Office.
• Please be aware of the similarities which is why we
are publishing this information for your use.
• Contribute wisely. Know you are contributing to and
should you have any questions or concerns please feel
free to call Nile Shriners at 425-774-9611 xt. 215 and
speak with the Recorder.
FUNDRAISING
by Ron Savage
I have been asked by the Potentate to design fund raising events that will tap into money from outside our
Shriner’s pockets. I have several potential events that
will bring in outside dollars, but I need clubs willing
to take on projects. If your club needs dollars for your
treasury, please contact Ron Savage at 360-551-2557
and we will get together to find a good fit for your club
or unit. This is for any Shrine related or associated
club that requires help.
Examples:
1. “Jazz Feed” Jazz band + Boil Feed + Picnic Atmosphere = Dollars in your treasury after you cook the
meat.
2) “Golf Tournament” 18 holes + Cart + Salmon Bake
+ Raffle = Dollars in your club or unit treasury. The
golf club has taken one of these and it should raise
around $1,000 for them.
3) “Family Picnic” Steak BBQ + Games for kids + Music + Picnic Atmosphere = Dollars in your treasury.
It is time to step up now so we can plan for success.

interested please contact Dave Brady (425-481-0159)
or Howard Wise (425-245-3289) for more information.
Dues are $50 a year.
Our uniform is a white polo shirt with the Nile mini
bike emblem on it, black pants, red jacket, and black

Currently we ride 1970 Honda Trail “70” mini bikes

such as two’s, fours, “V” formation, matching wheels
and figure eights. We have practices beginning in April
to get ready for our parade season. During parade
season we meet for breakfast and caravan together to
the parade and throughout the year we get together to
socialize and have fun. Please consider joining.

Working hard to finish up our new club house. Half
the project is done and we are working on the other

will be entertaining the cub scouts again for a week

A special thank you to last year’s President Arne Ringstad who took on several tasks including Chairing the
successful Nile Golf Classic Tournament and overseeing improvements to the golf patio. And another
thank you to George Young for his work on many
projects, especially the golf patio.
On a somber note, over the holidays we unexpectedly
lost one of our long time golfers: Noble Dr. Charlie
Schuetz. Noble Schuetz golfed regularly at Nile for
over 20 years. When once asked why he didn’t leave
town to go on more vacations, he responded that everyday that he golfed at the Nile with his friends he felt
like he was on vacation. He will be missed.

by Karin Ingleright
As the days get longer, our thoughts are turning to
golf and how to better our game this year. Three clinics will be held in March and all ladies are welcome to
attend. We have a wide range of golfing experience and
ability at Nile Golf Club, fun 18 hole competitions
every Tuesday from April through October, and even
an active nine hole group!
The first clinic will be held on Tuesday, March 12th
at 9:30 am in the Ladies Lounge. The following two
Tuesdays, March 19th and 26th will also feature clinics
at 9:30 am. Our golf pro, Joe Korn, will be refreshing
us on USGA and local rules as well as sharpening up
our short games and putting. We hope to meet and
welcome new ladies who may decide to join in the fun.

Eastside
Shrine Club
Great meeting of January 22nd. President D. J. Synnott
welcomed everybody, introduced the dignitaries and
laid out the ESC plan for the year.
Our meeting next month will give the history and
happenings of the Nile Oriental band. In March we
will tour a microbrewery or a winery. In April we will
hear about Masonic Charities. It is great to have good
leadership – think of what can be accomplished.
DJ went on to tell the 25 in attendance about the
activities of the Nile Hospital Transportation volunteers. Nile is fortunate in that it has substantial monies
available for transporting needy children to our hospitals. They do take advantage of opportunities that are
available from Amtrak, Southwest Airlines and others.
Their work with the School Nurses of Washington
(SNOW) organization offers many opportunities to
find children whom we can help.
It certainly looks like ESC will have a good year – you
may want to attend. Lunch on the 4th Wednesday of
the month, somewhere. Just call Henrietta (Armfield)
at 425 836-1278.

Renton
Shrine Club
by Margaret Gerber, Acting Secretary
The Renton Shrine Club Christmas Holidays meeting
had a small but fun group in attendance for this final
meeting of this year. Virgil Mudd brought Sylvia and
Gary and Dorothy Livie brought cookies for dessert.
The elections were held and the new officers to be
installed next month are:
President
Dick Gerber
1st Vice president Gary Mudd
2nd Vice president Dick Brandon
Secretary/Treasurer
Andy Wangstad
Chaplain Marv Jackson
Dave Petersen moved that a unanimous ballot be accepted, Virgil Mudd seconded it and that was that.
President Brandon thanked Pam for handling the
ladies gifts and decorations and for helping him get
through his year as president. Good job, Pam!
Dave Petersen spoke of the PNSA in Boise next year
and asked for (and received) volunteers to help out
when it will be held at Nile.
Skagit
Shrine Club
by Charles Tewalt, Secretary/Treasurer
The January 17th meeting was well attended by members of the Nile Divan. Officers present were installed
by Chief Rabban Dave Brady as follows:
Noble Charles Tewalt - Secretary/Treasurer
Noble Roy Donaldson - 1st Vice President
We will continue to try to fill vacant positions in
upcoming meetings. Volunteers to Pro-Tem in these
positions for upcoming meetings are needed. Roy
Donaldson has been very reliable in taking care of
the donations and drawings. We need to get more
members attending so that we can conduct a proper
meeting and fulfill our obligations and conform to our
By-Laws. I will continue serving as Secretary/Treasurer
and will help run the meetings and do what I can to
keep the Club going. I am retiring this summer and am
planning on going south for extended times during the
winter months.
Reservations have been made to hold the next three
meetings at the Farmhouse Restaurant. The dates are
February 21, March 21 and April 18. Other locations
were discussed for future meetings and will be determined by the next Club President. Please plan on attending. Bring guests and family members. The rooms
we meet in allow attendance of minors.
THE NORTHWEST SHRINE CLUB INSTALLATION
CR Dave Brady gave a report on the status of Nile.
The Club and Unit Seminar is scheduled for February
8th at Nile Temple. Gene Gilbert, P.P., shared information about Shrine Hospitals and answered many
Hospital questions. There was a question directed to
the Divan about the Nile’s parade schedule and if the
Sedro Woolley parade was included. The schedule is
not out yet so we will have to wait for confirmation.
We want to get back to scheduling some type of entertainment for the Dinner Meetings. Suggestions are
needed and any help securing suitable entertainment
would be appreciated. Guest speakers should also be
included.
The Skagit Shrine Club and family members have been
invited to Burlington United’s “Sweethearts Dinner” on Thursday February 6th at the Sedro Woolley
Temple. Dinner is at 6:00 PM. The Worshipful Master intends to hold a quick Stated meeting at 7:30 and
resume social activity in the Dining Room.
NEXT MEETING: February 21st at The Farmhouse
Restaurant, Corner of Hwy 20 & La Conner/Whitney
Rd. Zem-zem: 6 pm, Dinner: 6:30-7:00 pm. Order off
the Menu. For reservations contact Charlie Tewalt,

Qualifying for Medicare
If you are unsure whether you qualify for Medicare
you can go the Social Security website to view the
pamphlet called “Medicare” at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/EN-05-10043.pdf.
Medicare and Medicaid
Most people don’t know the difference between the
two programs. Medicaid is state run and provides
hospital and medical coverage for people with low income and few to no resources. Each state has different
criteria for who is eligible and what is covered under
Medicaid. People may qualify for both Medicare and
Medicaid. For more information about Medicaid,
contact your Masonic Outreach Services team at 206878-8434/1-800-820-4630
For More Information
