PRESIDENT’S
DIARY FOR THE WEEK
(27 January – 16 February 2016)
DEAR FELLOW ROTARIANS,
G
ong Xi Fa Cai and Wishing all a Prosperous and Healthy
2016 ! At RCPJ, we kick started the Chinese New Year mood on
29th January with our Annual Chinese New Year Cheers at SJK
(C ) Chung Hwa Damansara, followed by our attendance at RC
Temerloh Chinese New Year Charity Dinner on 30 January. 2016
will be a good year for all!
Sealing
the
Final
Contract with new
SuperMum
Bakery
Contractor
28 January 2016. The long
waited moment is finally
here. We managed to find
a new contractor to run our
SuperMum Bakery in Taman
Megah. Mr Anthony and his sons from “Bake and Brew” will
be running the Bakery. They are running a few bakery shops
in the Klang Valley. Hence, having them to run the SuperMum,
we believe this will be a great success and more single mum will be trained by our Supermum
Program. Wishing Anthony and his team all success in running the Supermum Bakery!
RCPJ Chinese New Year Cheers at SJK (C ) Chung
Hwa Damansara
29 January 2016. The day starts in Chung Hwa School at 8.30am.
Dressed in Chinese New Year Theme dresses, the children join
in the celebrations. The Chairman of PIBG, Mr Sip Mun Yee and
the President of the School, Mr Lee Kim Chung were present to
receive us. I must say this was a very well organized event by
the school. Special Thanks to PP Shou Kong for sponsoring the
Lion Dance, PP Yeng Kit and Rtn YS sponsoring the Angpau and
Director PP Seng Chuan, PP
Albert Yong and Rtn YS who
have been coordinating with
the school to ensure we have a great success of the event.
RC Temerloh Charity Dinner
30 January 2016. This is the annual event for RC Temerloh to
raise fund. RCPJ has been a great supporter to their dinner
because of our strong sister ties. This year, we managed to bring
our newest members, Jegan and Shen to attend the dinner with
us at Temerloh. It was a good platform for our new members to

know our sister club, and more important, to establish the continuous relationships of the two clubs.
Special thanks for PP Dato Hiang for hosting our hotel stay and PP Boon Chong and his lovely wife
Kelly for hosting us for tea at their residence. It was a warm experience for all.
Luncheon Talk : Gopeng Resort & The International Award for Young People
16 February 2016. After the long CNY holiday break, this session
set the mood for our up-coming event at RCPJ. We have made
the arrangement with Mr Lim Kee Siang, owner of Gopeng
Resort to share with us the resort facilities and its programs as
we review new venue for our SuperCamp. Mr Lim is a multitalented young man running many businesses and he is also
the Chairman of Perak state Liaison cum Central Committee of
PUMM.
We also have Ms Joyce Lim from Gandingan Bersatu Malaysia
to share with us the criteria and requirement to qualify for The
International Award for Young People. This program was first
introduced in UK in 1956. In 6 November 2000, Malaysia was
appointed as international authorized body for this award.
At RCPJ, we are looking into ways and opportunities of our
Interactors to qualify more points which are recognized by MOE
for their higher education when they enter into university. This
is one of the program which provide the additional points to
the students. This program also required students to involve
in community and social service – which is the core of Interact
Clubs. It also requires students to go through a 2 Days 1
Night camp experience, which we can run it to replace our
SuperCamp. We are exploring into this program to see how
we can integrate this with our youth development program. We
keep all updated on this program development.
Next Tuesday EVENING Meeting on 23 February 2016 (Tuesday).
We have made arrangement for Master Kenny Hoo to be our guest speaker for our evening meeting
next week. It was not an easy task to get such prominent guest speaker for our event and am
looking forward to your support to attend the event next week. Master Kenny Hoo usually charged
RM9888 for talk session for 120 pax. So, do secure your seat now and register via our RCPJ Chat.
See you next week !
Sincerely,

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
FEBRUARY 2016
In life, sometimes the experiences that matter the
most are the briefest. They pass in the blink of
an eye: a few days, a few hours, a few moments.
They are the experiences that illuminate the
landscape of our memory, shining brightly even
years later. They are the moments in which we
see, suddenly, something we had not seen; we
understand something we had not understood;
we forge a connection we had not expected.
For me, this has been a Rotary year like no
other. I have been around the world, traversing
countries and continents. I have been to places
I had never seen before, and I have returned to familiar places and seen
them, as for the first time, through the lens of Rotary.
When you travel for Rotary, you travel with a different sense of perspective
and a different sense of purpose. There is an awareness of being part of
something larger than yourself. When you board a plane or a train, or leave
your home in the dark hours of early morning, you may be leaving for lands
unknown – but at your destination, there will be no strangers. There will be
Rotarians, waiting and welcoming. There will be work to do, something to
learn, and perhaps something to teach.
There will be connections to forge, friendships
to build, and memories to carry for a lifetime.
This year, I have been the traveler, and I have
been welcomed by Rotarians around the world.
A few months from now, from 28 May to 1 June, I
invite you to step into my experience: allow me to
welcome you to Seoul for our 107th International

Convention.
The Koreans have a saying: 사람이
나면 서울로 보내라. In English we
would say, “When a person is born,
send them to Seoul.” For Seoul is
a city of opportunities: a wonderful
destination with rich traditions, modern
conveniences, and a culture unlike any
other. But I ask you to join me in Seoul
not only for all of this, but also for the
experiences you will have there with
your fellow Rotarians.
Sungnyemun (숭례문, 崇禮門) Exalted Ceremonies Gate
For a brief moment in time, you will experience Rotary as I have experienced
it: in all its diversity, all its warmth, and all its potential. You will be greeted as
an old friend by people you have never met; you will share your thoughts,
even without a shared language. You will learn with wonder of what Rotary
has achieved, and leave inspired to achieve even more.
Before this Rotary year comes to its close, I ask you to do what I have done:
to leave your homes, to board your flights, to travel toward the unknown
with an open heart and an open mind, confident that Rotary will welcome
you. Join me, and your fellow Rotarians, as we Connect with Korea – Touch
the World.

TEACHING AND TOUCHING
THE FUTURE
BY JULIA PHELPS
DEAR FELLOW ROTARIANS,
In May 2013, four science teachers from the
Philippines were preparing to return home
after a visit to the United States as part of a
vocational training team (VTT). They’d spent
30 days observing classrooms, visiting science
museums, meeting with policymakers, and
making presentations to Rotary clubs in
Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
It was an emotional time for all of us, as we had
learned much more than science instructional
strategies. We had learned that, no matter what
country we hail from, we all want the best for
our students. We want them to succeed. And as
teachers, we want to make a difference in their
lives.
Rotary International Director Julia Phelps served
as associate commissioner for the Center for
Curriculum and Instruction for the state of
Massachusetts before retiring. She is a member
of the Rotary Club of Malden.
As hosts, we were very proud of what we had accomplished. The teachers
returned to their schools in the Philippines and immediately made an
impact. They won regional and national teaching competitions, they were
promoted to master teacher, and the performance level of their students
improved significantly. They were making a difference.
I was in the Philippines last month and made a point to reconnect with the
members of this vocational training team. I was able to visit two schools and
see the teachers implementing the hands-on techniques they had learned
during their VTT experience. I saw young girls conduct an experiment
and then explain why they thought the results had happened. I watched
students work collaboratively to complete assigned tasks. Students were
excited and engaged in learning science. It took me back to our original
conversations, but this time, they were not abstract ideas or comments or
thoughts.

Had the visit ended there, it would have been worth the time and effort.
However, Manny Sy Peng, the governor of District 3770, had arranged for
an intercity meeting where we got to hear from the team members about
life after they returned home. They told us about the impact the VTT had
on them professionally and personally. We heard the following:
“Thank you, (District Governor) Terri Kidder, you
changed the life of a simple teacher.”
“I came out of myself, I became more selfconfident. The VTT journey has never ended.”
“My dream is to create a teacher resource center
in my school.”
“Julia, you told us to come back and make a
difference in our schools and communities and
we have.”
RI Director Julia Phelps, back left, visits a
classroom in the Philippines taught by one
of the teachers who benefited from the 2013
vocational training team.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I listened to these and other comments.
How many times have I called on Rotarians to “make a difference?” These
teachers took my words to heart and did just that. I was bursting with pride,
not only as an educator but as a Rotarian, at what we had collectively
accomplished.
The impact was truly what Rotary leaders had envisioned when they
designed the new grant model. We were asked for long-term impact. Here
it was, right in front of me.
Teacher and U.S. astronaut Christa McAuliffe said, “I touch the future, I
teach.” This sentiment was evident in the classrooms I visited and in the
lives of the four teachers who were members of this vocational training
team.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF PETALING JAYA
The Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya was
sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kuala
Lumpur and received its charter from Rotary
International on January 6th 1961 with 35
founding members.
Within the first 15 years of its existence,
the Club provided Petaling Jaya’s urban
community with its first public library and
kindergarten. At the national level, it succeeded in founding the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia and RCPJ
members have been serving on the Foundation’s board for the last 47 years. ( since 1969)
Over the years, the Club expanded its service activities, establishing regular community support in the form of youth
development through Rotaract and Interact Clubs, the Golden Child Project, the Ten Pin Bowling Project and the Super
Mum project.
The Club meets every Tuesday at 12:45pm for lunch at the Grand Dorsett Hotel Subang and the
Sultan of
Selangor, DYMM Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, is currently the Royal Patron of the Club.
