The Society is looking for a
committed owner to take on this
beautiful piece of B.C.’s maritime
history. Marcelle II is a 32’
pilothouse sailboat beautifully
designed by Tom Halliday who
also designed the famous RCMPV
St. Roch , which is displayed at
the Vancouver Maritime Museum.

Boat Society at 250.746.4955 or [email protected]
Allow me to introduce myself!
I am Dale Gagné and am the current treasurer for the
Society. My husband, Dave Sharrock (also on the Board) and I
came to Maple Bay with our vintage wooden boats (1926 and
1954) last summer after both retiring from B.C. Ambulance in
Vancouver. I have volunteered to be the editor of our
newsletter and hope everyone enjoys the new format.
Comments are welcome if you would like to see any changes,
or have ideas for some articles. As we are a volunteer board,
we need as much help as we can get. If you have some time
that you would like to contribute, please let the Society know
at 250-746-4955.
My email is [email protected]. Emails can be sent to the
Society at [email protected]. Check out our website at
www.classicboats.org for current course information, upcoming
events and the latest happenings with the Cowichan Bay
Wooden Boat Society!
Did you know???
The Cowichan Valley Dragon Divas operate out of our
centre!
They paddle in the Bay every Monday and Thursday
evenings around 6:00. What an amazing group of ladies!!
Marcelle II was built in
Vancouver in 1948 by Frank
Goodwin and J. Minot using only
the finest of materials: 1" old
growth yellow cedar planking and
1 3/8" X 2 1/8" steam bent oak
ribs on 10" centres.
She has since gained all new
mahogany trim on the handrails,
toerail, rubrail, and hatch. With
over 6000 hours having gone into
her restoration since 2004,
including a rebuilt Volvo engine
and cockpit renewed with epoxy
and fiberglass over new plywood,
Marcelle II also has numerous
brand new features such as
electronics, upholstery, and a
galley Cookmate double burner
alcohol stove. This motorsailer’s
overall length is 32’ and in
rebuild every effort has been
made to make the vessel
structure accessible.

Our 2015 Summer Students!
Please come into the center and say hi
to these three amazing assistants!
Kelly Agnew
Kelly is currently attending McGill
University in Montreal and will be
heading into his second year of
Mechanical Engineering in the fall. He
grew up in Maple Bay and has plenty
of experience on the water including
sailing in Maple Bay and competitive
rowing at Brentwood College. Having
commuted by boat to high school,
Kelly is very familiar with the coastline
from Sansum Narrows to the Satellite Channel.
Olivia Belcher-Coward
Olivia is a commerce student
entering her third year at the
University of Victoria’s Gustavson
School of Business. She
successfully completed all
components of the Bronze, Silver,
and Gold levels of the Duke of
Edinburgh Award through her
participation in group trips with the Sail and Life Training
Society (SALTS). Born and raised in Victoria, she is
thoroughly enjoying her time in the beautiful Cowichan
Valley this summer.
Hannah Cormack
At the age of 4, Hannah spent a year
sailing in the Caribbean with her
parents. She then moved to Asia,
spending 5 years in Indonesia
followed by 8 years living in Beijing,
China, before moving back to British
Columbia to attend university in
Vancouver. While living in Asia, she
returned home every summer to Shawnigan Lake and
enjoyed recreational water activities like sailing, kayaking,
canoeing, and swimming. Most summers her family would
take a week to rent a sailboat out of Nanaimo and sail
around the islands. She currently attends UBC and is
going into her 3rd year as a Psychology major in the
Faculty of Arts.

COVEY HERITAGE
MARINE WAYS
Two Sisters - 1954 - 31’ Locke Sailboat
The Covey Heritage Marine Ways, an
integral part of our living museum, are
of the traditional railway type.
Boats are floated onto a carriage and
then hauled onto dry land. Visitors like
to watch first the haul-out process and
then the work on the hulls, which are
often old wooden boats in need of
repair and maintenance.
These marine ways were donated to the
Maritime Centre by Ron Lindsay of
Covey Marine. Ron built, owned and
operated the marine ways for 20 years
in Cowichan Bay. This installation was
supported by volunteers and most
materials were donated locally.

30th Annual Wooden Boat Festival
June 27 & 28
Come and celebrate our maritime heritage.
Mark your calendars for our 30th Annual Wooden Boat Festival and bring your family and friends.
Whether you choose to enjoy the live entertainment; pancake breakfast; face painting, children’s
boatbuilding and fishing derby; Salmon BBQ on Saturday evening; steam bending and steam engine
demonstrations; voting for your favourites among the boats displayed; filling up on samples during
the much-loved Clam Chowder Contest; watching the water races; perusing the silent auction
tables; wine tasting; or any of the other great activities planned, the 30th Annual Wooden Boat
Festival is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our local maritime heritage and have
some fun.
This year the festival is proud to feature Maureen and Wayne Loiselle’s "Grail Dancer", an
extraordinary 61’ traditional schooner based upon the hull lines of an 1866 schooner named
"Emma C. Berry". Taking almost 20 years to construct, she was built on Thetis Island out of local
Douglas fir and yellow-cedar. Festival goers will have the opportunity to step aboard and see the
fine workmanship for themselves.
Come and enjoy all that the festival has to offer. Complete festival details, including a schedule
of events and boat registration forms, are available at www.classicboats.org.

18 th Annual Fast & Furious Boat Building Challenge
Make a splash participating in the 18 th Annual Fast & Furious Boat
Building Challenge, taking place on Sunday, June 28, the second day of the

you will undoubtedly benefit as a team and have much fun in the process. The
