DEAR FRIENDS,
The demand for BRC’s housing and services continued
several successful new initiatives; city, state and federal
to grow in 2007 and BRC continued to respond —
agencies who continue to provide our core funding; scores
aggressively and effectively — meeting the needs of

thousands in crisis and helping them to reclaim lives lost.

Sincerely,
In 2007, BRC met a 9% increase in admissions with a
21% increase in successful client outcomes. The number
of housing placements our homeless clients achieved
was up 17% and the number of new jobs our clients
started increased 86%. Overall, two-thirds of those leaving

This year BRC took a calculated risk, creating two new programs providing men
and women living on the streets and in the subways a hand up and a way out.
INNOVATIVE
Our 69 Safe Haven beds offer a place to stay and
assistance in getting housing without the requirements
of sobriety, structured activity, and curfews that are the
norm in shelters. BRC took a chance, removing these
barriers to which many homeless people could not or
would not conform. The results have been impressive, as
some of the most hard core street dwellers — people you
might well recognize — have come in, allowed us to help
them, and found housing. Even more, the majority have
sought sobriety or cut back on their drinking and taken
steps to improve their health. We didn’t tell them to do it,
they chose to, because now they had something to live for.
Listening to the people we serve, we find some of the best ideas for ending homelessness.
EFFECTIVE
For USMC Captain Dale Clemons, a Vietnam veteran who
had seen the inside of an alcohol detox 26 times in the
past five years, the BRC Safe Haven was the solution he’d
been proposing. After 13 years on the street and just 5
months at the BRC Safe Haven, Dale signed a lease and
moved into his own apartment in BRC’s Clyde Burton
House, where he’s been living comfortably since April
2007. A positive result occurs for two out of every three
people who come to BRC; 2,061 people achieved a
positive outcome at BRC last year. Success matters!

With a diverse and comprehensive array of services, BRC provides a holistic solution to the crisis of homelessness.
INDEPENDENT
Our goal is more than simply finding someone a place to
live; we prepare them to live independently. A continuum
of services that includes outreach, residential and outpatient treatment, job development and housing enables
our clients to develop the skills and gain the confidence
they want and need to reclaim their lives. On an average
night in 2007, there were 784 men and women sleeping
safely under BRC roofs. And by the end of the year we
had helped 495 once homeless men and women move
to their own homes, reclaiming their lives and restoring
their independence and self-sufficiency. This year, we
plan to add capacity to house an additional 475 people.
Watch us grow!

Taking pride in his work is how STANLEY takes pride in all
that he’s accomplished. At BRC, our pride comes from
knowing we help our clients reach the day they no longer
need our help.

Our clients come to BRC with hope; not seeking pity.
RESPONSIBLE
Here they overcome all kinds of adversity and discover
their own strength to move forward and rebuild. As adults
they find what they lost in their youth: their potential. They
strive for the responsibility from which they ran. Having
lost it once, and suffered the consequences, they are that
much more determined to hold onto it this time around. At
BRC, we require our clients to take responsibility and we
hold them to account. We tell them we know they can
succeed, and that we expect them to. As a result, 253 times
last year, BRC clients started new jobs. Change happens!
You never know what you have until you’ve lost it.
FATHER
Stanley got his fresh start at FreshDirect, a valued
employment partner of BRC’s Horizons Employment
Program. FreshDirect benefits from the training,
structure and character building BRC provides men
and women like Stanley. And Stanley gets a good job
with good benefits and a career path (he’s already
been promoted). But ask Stanley what having this job
means most to him and he’ll tell you: “It means that
once again, after years of running away, I can go home
each night and tuck my kids into bed, and be the Dad
they deserve to have.”

Night and day, from Midtown to Montauk and the West
Side to Westchester, on the streets or underground,
BRC’s homeless outreach teams offer a hand up,
building RELATIONSHIPS upon which our clients can
depend. Last year, our teams made 1,701 placements
from the streets and subways.
Your call to the BRC HOMELESS HELPLINE —
212.533.5151 — starts the process of helping people
reclaim lives lost and 13,039 calls were received and
handled last year. Thank you!

We greatly value the relationships we’ve developed over the years.
PARTNERSHIP
We believe that people are more likely to succeed when
they work together. We are who we are because of the
generosity of thousands of individuals who give to BRC,
both financially and as volunteers. Without them, BRC
would not be BRC. And just as our clients achieve their
goals from building effective and trusting relationships with
our staff, BRC achieves its goals from having built and
sustained relationships with an ever-increasing number
of nonprofit, for profit, academic, civic, government and
philanthropic organizations throughout our City and
beyond. By being consistent in our values, we see them
instilled in our clients, so many of whom, having resolved
their own issues, move on to help others.
Thanks to all our partners!

Everything that happens at BRC occurs because 495 of the most dedicated individuals you’ll ever meet work here.
PERSONAL
FULFILLMENT
Our staff account for two-thirds of what it costs to make
BRC the successful organization we are, and we manage
our investment wisely, respectfully and with great care. Not
surprisingly, when surveyed anonymously 90% of our staff
said their work at BRC gives them a sense of personal
accomplishment and 88% said they would recommend
BRC as a place to work.
