Kaldnes - Water Treatment Technologies
Kaldnes™
AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR Technology
The KaldnesTM biofilm process
Highlights
• Compact design, demands very little foot print
• Easy to care for
• Flexible – different reactor designs as well as
existing tanks can be used
• Efficient
• Robust and stable even at big loading variations
• Tolerant against disturbancies
• No risk for clogging
• Future expansion possible by increasing the filling degree of carriers
• Useful for many different applications; in one or
multiple steps
Applications for treatment of
municipal wastewater:
•
•
•
•
BOD-removal
Nitrification
Pre-denitrification
Post-denitrification
The first Kaldnes™ biofilm process for municipal
wastewater treatment was put into operation in
Norway in the early 1990s. Today, with more than 200
municipal installations, the Kaldnes™ process is one
of the most well documented biological solutions for
treatment of municipal wastewater. Based on
AnoxKaldnes very flexible and versatile MBBR technology, the Kaldnes™ biofilm process can be designed
for different municipal applications and levels of
treatment. As for example, BOD removal can be
achieved in a simple high-rate Kaldnes™ process
in one or two stages, while far reaching nitrogen
removal can be performed in multi-reactor systems
comprising stages for pre-denitrification, BOD-removal, nitrification and post-denitrification. Utilization
of different MBBRs with specialized and highly active
micro-organisms is the key to the high efficiency and
compactness of the Kaldnes™ process. As the
Kaldnes™ biofilm process is operated without sludge
recycle, only excess biomass formed in the process
has to be separated in the following separation unit.
This means the choice of separation is very flexible
and compact units such as Actiflo™ or dissolved air
flotation can be used to create a totally very compact
plant.
