HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!
A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people,
promptly announces she never did care for pie. ~Tenneva Jordan
Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It
is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most
commonly in spring. (e.g., April–May in the northern hemisphere,
October in Argentina, but northern hemisphere spring, May, in
Australia).
It is time to remember our spiritual mother Mata Sahib Kaur (November 1681 1747) known as the "Mother of the Khalsa".
She earned the distinction by instilling the first
Amrit with the sweetness that balances
its fierceness. Because of her purity, Guru Sahib
declared that Sikhs should consider Mata Sahib
Kaur as the spiritual mother of the Khalsa.

“There are two gifts we can give our children.; One is roots, the other is wings”

A Matter of “Principal”
ROOTS & WINGS
(Poem written by Denis Waitley)
As the current school year draws to a close, we find ourselves filled with both reflection and anticipation. Reflection
upon our successes and anticipation of how we may continue to create and sustain a culture of excellence. From a
simple quote we can find lessons for reflection as well as anticipation, lessons that inspire success and lessons that
renew our commitment to excellence.
One of the fundamental goals and responsibilities of educators is that of giving students both Roots and
Wings. We must give students the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence. We must give students the
roots of their culture, faith and tradition and give them wings to prepare for their futures. We must create an
environment in which students are nurtured and experience success so that they may develop self-confidence and
independence. We must enable students to have a strong identity and develop character and values so that they
develop the wisdom to make good choices and have the freedom to make mistakes.
These roots help students build a firm foundation upon which to build the rest of their lives – a foundation that will
support them when they spread their wings to soar and pursue their dreams.
If I could give you many things,
The source of your inner determination.
I’d give you gold and silver rings
Wings to soar over obstacles, wings to fly free,
Of knowledge that I’ve gained with years
Wings to glide to the heights of the best you can be.
The gift of smiling through the tears
And when obstacles loom, from your Roots grows a
Confidence, courage, determination,
hand
Laughter and spirit and love of creation,
Providing a strong, sturdy, safe place to land.
Wrapped up in a box with a bow,
I’d choose these two things for the gifts that are best,
I’d give to you these gifts to keep for as long as you live.
For with Roots and with Wings, you’ll find all the rest!
If I could give you just two things,
One would be Roots, the other, Wings.
Roots, not to tie you to the ground,
But to guide you to where your fulfillment is found
The nourishing start, the firm foundation,

The Habit of the Month for May is
Habit 7: Sharpen the saw!
Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have--you. It
means having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual.
As you renew yourself in each of the four areas, you create growth and change in your
life.
Sharpen the Saw keeps you fresh so you can continue to practice the other six habits.

Milk Program
The goal of the milk program is to make fresh, cold milk available
at school for students to enjoy and to fundraise for the school.
At the beginning of every month, all division 1 students will receive a milk order form to order milk/yogurt/chocolate milk. They
will be able to select days. Everyday they will get 1 item for 1 dollar each. Studies show that well-nourished students are able to
concentrate longer and perform better in school. Canada's Food
Guide recommends 2 to 4 servings of milk products each day. Did
you know that milk contains 16 essential nutrients and builds
strong bones and healthy teeth? A glass of chocolate milk contains
the same amount of sugar as a glass of unsweetened apple juice.
Milk is fortified with vitamin D. Milk helps children grow healthy
bodies and minds.
No other beverage comes close to matching the nutritional value
of milk. There are large amounts of calcium found in both white
and chocolate milk.

are excited to share our stories with you!

how they have changed over time. Please share your stories with us at home so we can share them at school with our class.
Get ready! In Art we will be celebrating Spring by making bright and festive art work and bringing it home for you to decorate in the
house.
In order to sharpen the saw in Physical Education, we will be skipping, dancing and playing soccer.

Grade 2
For Literacy, we are working on our fifth genre of writing. We have been looking at procedural texts. Purpose: tells the
reader to do something. For example, how to make cookies, feed a pet, or play a game. The writing could be simple or
complex.
For Math, we currently are working on 3-D Objects. We will be focusing on describing the characteristics of 3-D objects
and 2-D shapes, and analyzing the relationships among them. Students will be able to describe, compare, and construct 3
-D objects, including: cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, and pyramids. Students will also be able to identify 2-D shapes as
parts of 3-D objects in the environment.
Currently, our main focus in the “Magnetism” unit is to be able to identify where magnets are used and why they are
used. Also to distinguish materials that are attracted by magnets from those that are not. Later our focus will be on the
last unit which is “Buoyancy and Boats”. Students will be able to understand, describe and classify materials on the basis
of buoyancy. Students will learn to distinguish between material that sinks in water and those that float.
For Social Studies, we have continued learning about Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit. We will be focusing on our third
unit which “Looking at Work”. Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how geography, culture,
language, heritage, economics, and resources shape and change Canada’s communities.
Ms.Konard, Mrs.Kaur and Ms.Gill
Grade 3
Spring has arrived and the students are ecstatic about the weather. The Grade 3s have had a fun and exciting time during the month of April participating in various activities. In Literacy, students are learning
to write different kinds of stories including a stuck and a copycat story. Each story includes a certain format which will help students with their planning and story writing. Students are also continuing to learn
about Tunisia. Did you know that a Tunisian man is not to carry his child in front of his father? In science,
students have wrapped up the unit “Testing Materials and Design” and are now taking what they have
learned and applying it to the next unit “Building with a Variety of Materials”. I am sure your child has
asked to collect different household materials from home to help them with their projects. Be sure to
stop by and see what your child has made. In physical education, students in Mr. Hasegawa and Ms. Rendell’s class have put a hold on their gymnastics unit until the new gym has opened in May. They will move
onto the floor hockey unit focusing on cooperation and fair play. Ms. de Jonge’s physical education class
will finish up their volleyball unit and flip and roll their way to their gymnastics unit. Finally, students in
Ms. de Jonge and Mr. Hasegawa’s math classes are learning about measurements; specifically exploring
different units of time, measuring using a ruler, and measuring perimeter. Ms. Rendell’s class is also continuing with measurements and will shortly be moving onto fractions. Even though we are getting close
to the end of the school year, there are still many exciting activities the students can look forward to.
Yours in Education,
Mr. Hasegawa, Ms. de Jonge , Ms. Rendell
