It's the ho-ho-holidays in Kingsville
The spirit of Christmas past is tenderly and
imaginatively brought into the present by Kingsville’s townspeople, municipal staff and Business Improvement Association.
There are so many celebrations that the festivities must
start early to accommodate
them all. In Kingsville, the holiday season officially begins on
Nov. 17 and continues till Jan.
6, 2013.

town to kick off the fun and
goodwill. Highlights include
the 20th Annual Fantasy of
Lights and the all new 8th Annual Santa Claus Parade.

Christmas Train
The trackless mini Christmas train will take
passengers of all ages on tours around Lakeside
Park from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., every
Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 18 to Dec. 9. “It’s a
great way to see all the lights,” promises Maggie Durocher, Kingsville Parks and Recreation
program manager.
Tickets are $2 per person or $5 for a family
of four. Children under 2 years ride for free.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 17, under the starry night sky, Kingsville’s primary thoroughfares
will be filled with lights, music and motion as
marching bands, entertainers, floats and the new
Christmas train parade through town.
The man of the hour, Santa Claus, is flying in
to take part.
The parade route concludes in Lakeside
Park on the shore of Lake Erie, where Santa
will perform the Flick of the Switch to signal
the official opening of the winter celebration
and the 20th Annual Fantasy of Lights.

After Santa turns on all the lights, many
charmingly illuminated displays will be revealed, transforming Lakeside Park and bringing joy and vibrant colour to the winter’s night.

Children’s Afternoon at the Park
Counting the sleeps till Santa comes, youngsters can share giggles from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 during the Children’s Afternoon at
the Park. The festivities are in Lakeside Park

Ice, Wine and Art at the Park
Naughty or nice, adults will be rewarded at
Kingsville’s Ice, Wine and Art at the Park in the
Lakeside Park Pavilion. From 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8, local vintners
will pour their wines and Simply the Best will
present its decadent desserts amidst a dazzling
setting of ice carvings, fine art and holiday music performed by Kingsville artists.
Hors d’oeuvres, desserts and three wine
samplings are to be had for a $10 donation.
Christmas Gingerbread Gazebo at the Park
Lakeside Park’s gazebo turns into a Christmas Gingerbread Gazebo, festooned with decorations created by young elves. The ornaments,
created by children and displayed until Dec. 15,
will be judged and the winners announced during the Big Screen Christmas Movie.

Family Caroling and Christmas Movie
Raising their voices together, families can sing
holiday carols and watch a Christmas-themed

Raise a Reader Book Trees
Kingsville is putting up two very unique
holiday trees to help promote literacy.
A six-ft. tall tree in Lakeside Park Pavilion
and a 12-ft. tall tree in Kingsville Arena, each
sporting sturdy shelves, are ready to be decorated with new or gently used children’s and
youth’s books from Nov. 17 to Jan. 6. Donated
books will benefit the Raise a Reader Program.

Small town with a big heart
When Kingsville shows its concern for
breast cancer patients, it goes all out to Paint
the Town Pink.
In April, the bows tied around the lampposts,
the flowers in the planter boxes, the displays in
the shop windows, even the specialty food and
beverages served in the restaurants – everything is in the signature pink of the Canadian
Breast Cancer Foundation.
The highlight of the Kingsville BIA’s Paint
the Town Pink campaign is a gala event, a joyous triumph of the spirit over cancer. Supporting
breast health awareness and the purchase of a
digital mammography machine for the Leamington District Memorial Hospital, the April 2012
fundraiser presented Viva La Diva, a musical extravaganza performed by breast cancer survivors
and regular performers at Migration Hall.
Paint the Town Pink was dreamed up five
years ago by Laura Jacobs, owner of Pinstripes
Ladies Fashions. Since then, the campaign has
raised more than $30,000.

November Fashion Shows
The community’s talents are put to good
purpose every November.
The women who own BIA businesses Mary
Kathryn’s Ladies Shop, The Towne Shoppe, The
Green Goose, Nova Goldsmiths, Swimsuits from
Tanlines, My Cousin’s Closet and Pinstripes Ladies Fashions co-host two fashion shows, again
to fundraise for the digital mammography machine in the nearby Leamington hospital.
This year, on Nov. 2 at Lakeside Park Pavilion, the Kingsville BIA will strut its style on
the runway with local women’s and men’s fashions, music, lights, wine and hors d’oeuvres.
“It’s a party!” Beth says. “Tickets sell out in
a matter of hours.”

Arts, culture thrive in Kingsville
Surrounded by natural beauty, Kingsville
inspires artists, even those who have not yet
tapped into their own creativity. To make opportunities available to people of all ages, the
town has established two centres dedicated to
the arts, a garden and the new Arts and Culture
Association of Kingsville.
Carnegie Arts & Visitor Centre
Nearly four years ago, the Town of Kingsville decided to invest in its cultural development and enjoyment by converting its former
library into the Carnegie Arts & Visitor Centre.
Now open year-round, the centre at 28 Division St. S. is home to the Kingsville BIA and an
expanding menu of creative, educational activities organized by the Arts and Culture Association of Kingsville.
War of 1812 Carnegie Peace Garden
In September, Kingsville unveiled its War
of 1812 Peace Garden, 200 years after the war
took place. Gracing the grounds of the Carnegie Arts & Visitors Centre, the garden was a
community effort that is now drawing tourists
following an 1812 commemorative garden trail
across Ontario.
The Kingsville Horticultural Society worked
with town’s Parks and Recreation horticulturalists to design the garden. Municipal horticulturalists selected heritage plants in keeping with a
formal British garden of early 1800s, framed
with a hedge of green boxwood.
Staff and students of Kingsville District
High School contributed the garden’s focal
point, a hand-hewn waterwheel, symbolizing
the town’s early roots. A plaque tells the story
of Kingsville, its involvement in the War of
1812 and its evolution.
“The fishing and lumber industries were
huge in the 1800s in shaping Kingsville,” notes
Maggie Durocher, Kingsville Parks and Recreation program manager.
“The Port of Kingsville serves as a safe
shelter when winds make the Port of Leamington inaccessible. Kingsville has always been a
community on the watch, ready to help when
need be and that is indicative in this peace garden,” she adds. “It’s a beautiful site that causes
people to pause and admire.”

exhibitions and performances. Starting in January 2013, there will be art classes for children

from the public to showcase art and arts and
crafts and we welcome any suggestions or offers to hold classes.”

Tall Ships come a-sailing
