SCHOOL
NEWSLETTER
Issue 11, 2006
Dear Parents and Students,
The School Office will close on Friday, 22nd December at 5.00 p.m. and will re-open officially on
Monday, 22nd January at 8.00 a.m.
The Carol Service at First Church is the main school function this week – on Thursday, 7th
December at 6.00 p.m. with The Rev. Fyfe Blair, School Chaplain, officiating. It is a school
occasion with students up to Year 10 inclusive required to attend. The Senior girls on study leave
are also warmly invited to attend (in mufti if preferred). The attendance of parents and family
members (with students sitting with their families) is warmly welcomed.
As students arrive at the Church, they are invited to place gifts of food or other small presents at
the foot of the Christmas tree (in lieu of a monetary offering).
Painting of Constance Hall and Highgate Retaining Wall
We are very pleased that we have been able to secure a painting firm for the Christmas school
holidays and that the re-painting of the interior of the assembly hall does not now have to wait until
February.
The assembly hall interior is going to be painted cream with the varnished panelling remaining as it
is. The lighter colour of cream will give the interior a fresher, more spacious look. Work will begin
on the 18th December.
The floor is also going to be re-polished right at the end of the holidays after the painting is completed.
The decision has also been made to paint the high concrete retaining walls on Highgate (either
side of Katharine Buchan House) as we have been unable to completely remove the “tagging”. A
sealant will also be applied to the painted surface. It is very unfortunate that we have to spend
money on this type of maintenance, caused by vandalism.
Appointment made to the English Position
Mrs Tania Roxborogh, graduate of Massey University and Auckland College of Education, has
been appointed to the full-time permanent English position at the College which will begin next
year. Mrs Roxborogh is an experienced teacher of English and a previous HOD who in 2006 has
been Writer in Residence at the Dunedin College of Education. Some of our girls will already know
Mrs Roxborogh as she was the Tutor for one of our Creative Writing Extension programmes this
year.

Mrs Roxborogh will teach Years 13, 12, 11 and 10 English and also a Year 9 Social Studies class.
She has written extensively with published novels, plays and English text-books.
New Position in the Boarding-House – Registered Nurse and Office Receptionist
We are pleased to advise that Mrs Richelle Manson has been appointed to this important new rôle
in the Boarding-House and will join the team of three key managers: the Acting House Manager,
the Acting Catering Manager and the Registered Nurse and Office Receptionist.
Mrs Manson’s position is a permanent one and her hours of duty on week-days will be 8.00 a.m. to
3.15 p.m. During each term Mrs Manson will also be responsible for some wellness initiatives for
the boarders in out-of-school hours both to ensure she has contact with all the girls and to provide
them with useful information and guidelines for maintaining good health and fitness.
Mrs Manson is a Registered General and Obstetric Nurse with a current practising certificate, and
is currently a Clinical Nurse Educator in the Main Operating Theatres of Dunedin Hospital with
responsibility for the orientation and teaching of a structured programme to facilitate expert nursing
care in a highly specialised, technically advanced environment. We are very fortunate to have Mrs
Manson in the new rôle in the Boarding-House.
Mrs Manson is the mother of two teenage daughters and a younger son.
Grant from the Otago Motor Club Trust
We record with appreciation a generous grant from the Trust of $863.54 for the purchase of
warmer rain-jackets for the Road Patrol teams.
School Zone Signs on Highgate
Thank you to parents for their feed-back on the new School Zone signs on Highgate.
As a result of the feed-back, we have extended the times the signs will flash.
The times are now:
8.00 a.m. to 8.35 a.m.
3.15 p.m. to 3.50 p.m.
Please let us know if the signs are not flashing as they should be on school-days, as we have the
capacity to adjust them at school.
2007 Youth to Everest
Congratulations to Hayley Mahon in Year 12 this year on her
selection for Youth to Everest in April 2007.
Youth to Everest is a well-established annual trip for New
Zealand secondary school students, with a very experienced
guide as leader and which also has a particular community
focus each year. In 2007 the eighteen secondary school
students in the party will be involved in educating local people
about fire-safety in their homes.
Hayley has a wonderful experience to look forward to in April
next year.

Black Watch Dinner
I would like to extend a huge “thank you” to all those people who not only helped
with the planning and organisation of the Black Watch Dinner, but also those
people who donated goods so generously for the Auction, and wine , food and
services for the dinner. All this made the evening an outstanding success.
We had 101 people seated for dinner which was a perfect number for the DiningRoom, any more might have been a little “cosy”.
The Dining-Room was
transformed with the use of round tables and the beautiful flowers that adorned
them. The meal was glorious and entertainment was provided not only from the
band “Chocolate” but also by Tony Sycamore and his auctioning skills!!!
A special “thank you” must be given to the following for their very generous
support:
Delicacy Café
Bell Pepper Blues
Highgate Bridge
Corstorphine House
Pak’n Save
Westpac Bank
Invercargill Brewery
ABN Amro Craigs
Mitre 10 Mega
Southern Motor Court
Corporate Direct Wines
Temple Gallery
Pisa Moorings Vineyard
Anderson Lloyd Caudwell
Roslyn New World
PPCS
We raised $1 7,00 0.00 on the night and this would not have been possible without
the enthusiastic participation of all of those people who attended the evening.
Thank you,
Pa m T i mms

BOOK FAIR
The 2006 Columba Book Fair was a rousing reading success! The four day Fair was
well attended by parents, students and friends with many returning several times to
add more volumes to their collections. The Fair sold over $4,700 worth of books,
raising $1,300 for new books for the school library.
The Junior School students thoroughly enjoyed the lunch-time readings by the
parent volunteers—so many parents volunteered to do the reading, we ran out of days
to have them all come! We'll have to figure out a way to continue this programme and
take advantage of all the wonderful people with read aloud skills. Lorinda Barson
McLean, Leanne Kennedy and Shelley Griffiths-Shiels had crowds gathered around
them under the tree, eager to listen to the stories. The students were also delighted
with the presentation by local children's book illustrator, Jenna Packer. Ms. Packer
not only spoke about her work, but demonstrated by drawing a picture that will be
framed to remember her visit. The children laughed when she told them how she had
accidentally dipped her paint brush in her tea one day and liked the effect so much
that she uses tea all the time in her work now.
The students turned in many impressive submissions for the bookmark contest. It
was hard to choose! The artists selected for each Year level received a movie pass to
Hoyt's as thanks for their efforts. The bookmark artists were Jessica Ireland, Year
12; Gigi Mogil, Year 8; Jessica Elsom, Year 6; Alexander Black, Year 6; Prao
Chittapraneerat, Year 5; Priyal Patel, Year 5; Rafe Duncan, Year 4; Serena
Waterworth, Year 4; Alana Samuel, Year 3; Libby Sycamore, Year 3; James Walsh,
Year 2; Annabelle Payne, Year 2; Meg Sycamore, Year 1; Amelia Willis, Year 1. Copies
of the bookmarks were available at the Fair and were quickly snatched up by the
classes visiting the event. Hopefully, they have found their way into those students’
books to mark their places.
Thank you to the Year 8 girls who did such a marvellous job of gift wrapping all the
purchases. There will be lots of terrific books under many a Columba family tree this
Christmas! MANY THANKS to all the parents who came to help set up and run the
Fair and to those who made yummy muffins. Many hands made the work light and
helped make the Fair a great success.
