fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2
Whenever I smell the odor of Castille soap, I am back at my Grandmother’s house in Cleveland. Fragrances are very
powerful things. They can rocket you from the here and now to the past and maybe even “back to the future.”
In the heart of the summer, August, it is these fragrances that are my delightful companions. I love the smell of newly
mown grass; of pine perfume when the carpet of needles are baked in the sun; of freshly mixed yeast and flour rising
as dough in a bowl on the counter; of clean, clear lake water as the fragrance wafts off the surface and as it engulfs
you when you jump into it; of coconut oil and aloe from sunscreen liberally applied; and, most especially, the rich,
earthy smell of horses on my jodhpurs after a summer horseback ride!
When our ancestors prepared offerings to put on the altar to honor God, they were instructed to provide (cf: 2
Chronicles 13:11) burnt offerings and fragrant incense. The “altar of August” fragrances in New England must indeed
be “pleasing to God.” They certainly are pleasing to me.
This year, August will begin for me with a 250 mile eleven day bike trip around the back roads of Maine with my
husband and my nephew. The fragrances that we will experience on the trip will be many and memorable. They will
bring smiles to our faces and will help us to weave a memorable tapestry of fragrances to which we can return when
we want to relive the essence of each moment of the trip.
While we cannot bottle up and bring back the fragrances from our trip for you, we will certainly be able to share our
photographs with you when we return!

Service for Kim Marie at the Waterford First UCC Church.

Her ordination will take place on August 19 . The UCC
Council is requesting members of our congregation to
attend.

July 29 , Rev. Bob Linders will be preaching. Pastor Alison
will perform the service. On August 5, Rev. Bob Linders will
perform the entire service. August 19, Beth Gleason will
preach and Pastor Alison will perform the service. On
August 26, Pastor Alison will preach in Sweden at the
evening service. On September 2, Naomi King will perform
our entire service.
August 19, a coffee-hour reception after the service is being
planned to welcome our new Music Director, Jed Wilson,
and to thank Elsa Newhouse, Mary Wilson, and Joyce Koop
for graciously helping out during this time.

A new project for the Mission Team—Cooking Matters
for Adults. This is a six week program of hands on
cooking and nutrition classes with 10-12 participants. A
nutritionist from the Maine Cooperative Extension, a
chef, and other volunteers will be in attendance each
week to share their knowledge and seek your input as
you learn to make healthy, tasty, low cost meals. These
classes will be held in our Parish Hall each Tuesday
from 6:00-8:00 pm and are scheduled to begin on

September 18 .
This is a FREE Program! Your responsibilities will be
committed participation, sharing, asking questions and
practicing at home what you learn. Each week you will
take home a bag of groceries to do this. Contact Ellie
Waterman (542-3692) to learn more about this
program or to sign up. Childcare will be provided.
Space is limited, so sign up early!
The Mission Team continues to support the Brownfield
and Sweden Food Pantries and we welcome your
contributions. We also collect eye glasses and items for
the Fall Shoebox Ministry. Boxes for these are in the
Parish Hall.

The 11th Annual Thrift Shop Fashion Show and Ice Cream Social was very successful. Photos of some of the
models are displayed in the Church Vestry. The next Circle fundraiser will be the Sept. 7th Harvest Supper.
Be sure to mark your calendars now. As reported before, the Circle is looking into the cost of resurfacing the
Christian Education wing and having painting, curtains, lighting, etc. redone in the hallway, offices and
classrooms as well. Dave Mills is coordinating this project, and plans are already in the works. Jane Gleason
is responsible for July kitchen clean up, and Lois Brown is responsible for August. The next business meeting
will be held on Sept. 11 at 12:00 noon. Be sure to bring a sandwich or salad for lunch. No work or business
meeting is scheduled for August. The Circle is responsible for the Gift Table at the July 28 “Fun in the Sun”
Summer Fair. Other tables include Food, Produce, Treasures, Gifts, Flowers, Raffle, and the usual delicious
lunch. There are no membership requirements for Ladies Circle, so please feel free to join the group for

Please place empties in the
Girl Scouts – An assistant leader is still needed to work with Cheryl
Ackerman and Brownie Troop 3149 as well as extra adults to work with container available outside
all other levels of Lovell Girl Scouts for the 2012-2013 year. Call Linda at Lovell UCC
Libby for information on these volunteer positions. All the Lovell Troops participated in the Lovell Old
Home Days parade on July 21. Jr. Troop 208 is making plans to visit Fun Town later this summer. Teen
Troop 58 had a great time on their July 12-16 cruise from Boston to St. John, Nova Scotia on the Carnival
Glory. One day in St. John, Nova Scotia was included in their schedule. Transportation to and from Boston
was provided by Sutton’s Limo Service. This troop is also continuing their returnables collection (please be
sure containers are returnable) at the church, or donations may be left at Woitko’s Redemption Center on
McNeil Road. Just ask that GS Troop 58’s account be credited. The next Leaders’ meeting date for August

Boy Scout Troop 155 – Seven boys and two adults recently spent the week of July 8-13 at Camp Hinds. If

Cub Scout Pack 155 – Fun Pack and Family Weekend at Camp Hinds is scheduled for Aug. 11-12 and

The Lovell United Church of Christ is delighted to announce the
appointment of Jed Wilson as their new Music Director. Jed’s tenure at the
church will begin in August.
Jed Wilson grew up in Gladstone, Oregon, and began studying piano at a
young age. As a teenager, he was an active performer on the Portland, Oregon
jazz scene, and won prestigious awards (including Downbeat Magazine's 'Best
High School Jazz Soloist' honor three years in a row).
Wilson received a bachelors degree in Jazz Performance from New England
Conservatory in 2004. While still a student at NEC, he formed a long-standing
musical partnership with renowned jazz vocalist (and NEC faculty member)
Dominique Eade. The duo have toured widely, and in 2006 released a critically
acclaimed CD that appeared on many of the year's top-ten album lists. In his
review, Bill Beuttler of the Boston Globe wrote, "Wilson's piano work, skilled
and subtle, made plain why a guy so young has become Eade's duo partner of
choice."
More recently, Wilson has performed extensively with singer/songwriter
Heather Masse (of The Wailin' Jennys); the association with Masse has
resulted in two albums and a host of appearances across North America. He
has also recorded or performed with Aoife O'Donovan (of Crooked Still), Sloan
Wainwright, Darol Anger, Joe Walsh, Herb Geller, Nancy King, Jeremy Udden,
and The Wild Band of Snee (featuring Grammy-nominated cellist Rushad
Eggleston). He currently resides in Lovell, Maine with his wife, Deanna,
daughter Mona, age 3, and son Ezra, 11 months.
