Dear Family,
No matter what troubles we have suffered, our Heavenly Father
offers us a new beginning! He counsels us in Isaiah 43:18 to put
the past behind us and not to dwell upon it. In verse 19, He continues to say He has something better in mind for us. Only God
knows the end from the beginning, so don’t you think we should
trust in His love and His leading?
If last year was a wilderness period for you, keep your eyes
fixed on God. He has promised He “will do a new thing.” He will
make a way where there seems to be no way. Nothing is impossible for Him!
At 3ABN we celebrate the opportunities this New Year brings
to work in God’s harvest fields. Divine providence is opening doors to mend broken people
around the world with a message of eternal
hope. Thank you for standing in faith with us
to promote life-changing programming to a lost
and dying world!

A Life of Purpose
M
ay Chung has supported Three Angels
Broadcasting Network
for many years. In fact, she was
one of the earliest supporters we
had. She has traveled the world
over, finding the needs of the
people, and giving generously
to meet those needs. Many
orphanages, churches, and villages have benefited from her
various projects, and she has
met with heads of state around
the world. But what inspired
May to do so much for Jesus?
One could imagine that she had
benefited from the best Christian upbringing and guidance
during her formative years,
but nothing could be further
from the truth. May’s zeal for
the Lord’s work comes from a
deep gratitude for what He has
done for her, and her love for
her Savior, Jesus Christ.
“I was born in Richmond,
Missouri, the youngest of three
children,” she tells us. “Father
had deposited a bag of gold
coins in the bank for each of
us the day we were born. He
had planned a college education for us, and he didn’t dream
he would die before I was two
years old.”
Tragedy struck suddenly in
her family. “Mother lost everything in months. Through all
my early life she would go to
court to plead for the gold coins
to feed and house us. The court
would give her a pittance at a
time. We three children lived
in misery with her.”
Just when things couldn’t
seem to be any worse, life for
her became even more bleak.
“Mother took up with the local
sheriff, who became violent
when drunk. Earlier than I can
remember, I had planned to
run away, see California, and
end my life. However, before I
died I wanted to know if there
was a God. God was only a
swear word at our house, yet
I wondered if there could be
a God.”
Even though her young life
was so bleak, the Lord found a
way to plant a seed in her mind.
She tells that she has a bright
memory from when she was
six years old. “My first-grade
teacher had each child say a
Bible verse daily. She said, ‘If
you pray, God will hear and
answer your prayers.’ I tried
it. My family laughed. But the
words, ‘God hears your prayers’
stayed in my mind.”
May left home when she was
14, running away with her best
friend. Together they had a total
of perhaps $7.50. “Leaving gave
me a feeling of freedom,” she
says. “We caught a ride with a
European count in his brandnew, red convertible. Later we
rode with a kindly truck driver
who insisted on buying us din
ner. There were many wonderful people who were kind and
helpful.”
Her adventures took her
many places. She worked along
the way in a carnival, in a Mormon nursing home, and even
as a cook, making mountains
of mashed potatoes on a ranch
in Nevada. But eventually she
and her friend were picked up
in Wyoming, and when her
mother was notified, May found
out that her sister had moved
to California. When May was
released, she decided to move
there, but life seemed no better, despite the kindness of her
sister and brother-in-law. She
continued to be plagued by
thoughts of suicide, and still she
searched for a God she could

Her search took her to
numerous churches. At one
she met a Christian minister
who seemed offended at her
questions. “He knew nothing of
what happens to us after death,
and seemed to have thought less

Bible at all!”
She also visited a Catholic
Church, where the priest was
sympathetic and gentle. But
when she studied their views of
purgatory and hell, they seemed
at odds with the God of love in
the Bible. Feeling hopeless, she
sank into a life of risk-taking
and despair. “Night after night
I wept, planning how best to
end the fiasco of life. Where was
God?” she kept asking.
Then she met her new neighbors. She admired them, and
asked them many questions.
Instead of giving her their opinion, they showed her verses in
the Bible that painted a picture of perfect love. When she
asked them about what had
happened to her father after he
died, they showed her that the
Bible teaches he is in a deathsleep, not being tortured in
purgatory or hell.
“It was almost dark when
I started home, and my feet
barely seemed to touch the
ground!” she relates. “Joy transformed the world, and my head
was dazed with the goodness
of the universe — there was a
loving God behind the mystery,
after all. I felt I was truly walking on air. I couldn’t wait to tell
my sister, Jean.”
After showing her the passages her neighbors highlighted
in her Bible, her sister believed,
too! “I wept like a baby that
night as I knelt to pray. I gave
the Lord my thanks and love.
I saw my moral deformity and
mental depravity, my deep need
of His forgiving love and transforming power.”
Soon May was baptized into
the Seventh-day Adventist
church, along with her sister
and brother-in-law. “Faith gave
me confidence. I went to college to study medicine and met
my husband-to-be there. He
persuaded me that we should
marry when we were of age and
then go to Hawaii as missionaries. There we saw the desperate
need for a hospital in Kailua.
We fought a long, hard battle.
It was 13 years before the doors
were opened at Castle Medical
Center,” but together they began
a wonderful life of service.
Then tragedy struck again.
Her husband and five others
were killed in a small plane
accident. May and her children
were devastated emotionally
and financially. “Our income
had stopped, but our debts had
not. There were times when my
burdens seemed heavy, indeed.
At the time of my husband’s
death, I didn’t realize that he
had mortgaged everything we
owned, and borrowed even
more,” she says.
Faced with an enormous
burden, she made a radical
decision. “When I realized that
I was liable for half of his debt
— which was in the millions of
dollars — I told the Lord, ‘I will
never own another thing again.’
I turned my financial problems
over to Him, and He has never
failed me.”
Soon she realized that not
only had God supplied her
needs, He also had given her
the means to be a blessing to
many others in the coming
years! “When you turn your
money over to the Lord, suddenly He becomes liable,” she
says. “He manages it well. I
have given away millions of dollars, and for every million I’ve
given, the Lord has replaced it
with another million. When it
becomes His money, He takes
care of it!
“God has promised to bless
us abundantly here on earth if
we will minister to the least of
His brethren,” she says. May is
characteristically outspoken
about this subject. “Go. Sell.
Give! Too many Christians
think they can send a minister. Such duties cannot be delegated. Seventy-five percent of
the Africans do not have a safe
water supply, yet a well to supply a whole village can be had
for $10,000! In the Philippines
families starve. Farms can be
had and people helped in many
places. It is the Christian’s lot to
face these needs. We can say, ‘I
am only one, but I am one. I
can’t do everything, but I can
do something. What I can do by
the grace of God, I will do.’ ”

not only served on 3ABN’s
board of directors, but she has
also been a tireless advocate
for reaching the world through
television. “I see 3ABN’s purpose as reaching the common
people. Not with preachers, but
with ordinary people telling
what God has done in their
lives. 3ABN’s purpose is to prepare the nations for the coming
of the Lord.” For many years
now, May has hosted several
television programs on 3ABN

where she interviews ordinary
people who are doing extraordinary work for the Lord.
Another project that is near
and dear to her heart is called
Law By Choice For Freedom.
After meeting founder Gerry
Mahn, May has traveled to
distant lands with him, helping
to fulfill his dream of presenting a beautifully framed copy
of the Ten Commandments to
presidents and heads of nations
all over the world. “I’ve been
blessed to hand-deliver the Ten
Commandments to leaders in
16 countries,” she says. “But
perhaps the most memorable
one was when we presented
the Ten Commandments to
the president of Nicaragua.
‘Oh,’ he said, ‘this solves all my
problems — all my national,
international, community,
and family problems. I never
thought of the Ten Commandments like this.’ ”
God has blessed this incredible woman with favor in the
eyes of these leaders. Her
stories have amazed us for
many years, and we truly love
this lady who has dedicated
her life to spreading the good
news of Jesus Christ to the
whole world.

A
rlene Jankens struggled
with many adversities in
her 87 years of life, but
her faith in God and regular attendance at her
Lutheran church sustained
her through them all. Polio
at 17 months left her with a
deformed foot and a bad
limp. She battled cancer for ten
years, and as a result, lost a portion
of her face, lost her hair permanently, and underwent 15
surgeries. Her husband, Erhard,
was legally blind for 44 years
during which she was both his
chauffeur and his eyes. Then
she broke her hip in October
2002, and almost died after
the surgery. She also became
legally blind due to wet macular
degeneration. Sadly, after 64
years of marriage, Erhard died
of congestive heart failure. At
this point, one might imagine
that Arlene must have felt like
she was enduring the trials of
Job!
Meanwhile, her son, Tom,
and his wife, Maxine, had
been on a spiritual quest. They
had both been raised in the
Lutheran faith, but Maxine
had puzzled many years over
questions about the Sabbath,
what happens after death, and
the book of Revelation. She
questioned why God had put
a book in the Bible if it wasn’t
meant to be understood.
One day after earnestly pleading with the Lord, she received
a booklet in the mail. It was
a condensed version of Ellen
White’s The Great Controversy.
Many years went by, and Maxine’s spiritual hunger continued
to grow. Convinced of the need
to worship on Sabbath, she and
her husband began looking for
a Sabbath-keeping church. They
even looked up information
on the beliefs of Seventh-day
Adventists in their local library.
When they finally began attending their local church, it wasn’t

Although Arlene Jankens was concerned
about bapti sm by
immersion, she was
determined to follow
through. With the
help of her son and
her pastor, she joyfully
entered the baptismal
waters, following Jesus’
example.
long before they felt the Lord
leading them to be baptized,
and on November 25, 2000,
they began their new life with
Christ.
Before his death, Tom’s father
had undergone a tremendous
character change after watching
his son’s videotapes of Evangelist
Kenneth Cox. At his invitation,
Erhard and Arlene were just
starting to participate in a local
evangelistic series at their son’s
church when he took a turn for
the worse and he was unable to
attend anymore. “I know that
my father believed what he
learned,” Tom says, “and I am
sure that we will see him again
when Jesus returns!”
After her husband died,
Arlene found it increasingly
difficult to live alone, and Tom
invited her to move in with his
family. Arlene soon found that
she needed something to do
with her time, so he bought her
a dish to watch Three Angels
Broadcasting Network. The
center of her vision was gone
by now, but by turning her head
she could see quite a bit with the
aid of her big screen TV she had
brought to her new home.
Then one day, after watching Pastor Doug Batchelor’s
presentation on baptism, her
daughter-in-law, Maxine, asked
her, “Do you think you would
like to be baptized?”
“Yes,” she said, “but I have
some concerns.”
Arlene wondered if she could
wear her wig into the water, and
also if she would be able to
handle the steps into the baptismal tank. Tom, whose job of
engineering had prepared him
for problem-solving, had the
perfect solution. He took his
mother to the church while the
tank was still empty. Together
they tried out the steps, with
him holding her on one side,
and Arlene holding the rail on
the other.
“I think I can do this,” she
said.
Tom, now an elder in his
church, was in the tank with
his mother when she was baptized on September 10, 2004
— just six months after she
began watching 3ABN!
“I have learned so much
about Jesus,” Arlene beams.
“I pray to Him ever y day,
and it won’t be long before
He comes back. I look forward to His coming, and I am
learning more about Jesus
everyday on 3ABN! Before I
began watching I just went to
church. I wasn’t learning about
stories in the Bible. I understand things now which were
never taught to me regarding
baptism and what happens
when you die. It all makes
sense.” Arlene maintained her faith
through all her struggles by
putting herself in the Lord’s
hands. She says, “He was with
me through everything.” Tom
sees his mother more at peace
now, especially since she studied about what happens after
death.
To me, Arlene is a powerful example of how the Lord
reaches out to the hearts of
His children, young and old,
and how He longs to give us
peace in this life and the hope
of eternal life.
Postscript
Arlene reads today using a 20-inch TV screen that is hooked up
to a camera. Reading material is put on an X/Y axis table under
the camera, which takes a picture of a few words, and magnifies
them 50 or 60 times! “It takes a while to read when you are only
looking at a couple of words at a time,” Tom says, “but my mother
uses this machine each day to read her Bible and study her Sabbath
School lessons.”

KRYH-LP, 104.7 FM
We refer to KRYH-LP as
the “miracle-a-day” station.
They did 18 months of work in
less than 32 days! On January
13, 2004, the project leader,
“Out on a limb of faith with the
Lord.” When asked how God
helped them to meet the challenges they faced, Ed said, “God
didn’t let us know it couldn’t be
done in one month.” Instead,
God provided a miracle a day
for 20 working days. Here are
just a few:
January
13th •3ABN Radio said go for
it!
16th •Ed and Luis consulted a
3ABN Radio Engineer.
20th •Filed request for building
permit with city.
21st • Building permit granted
— in less than 24 hours!
waives four-tosix month process and gives
approval in three days.
27th •Tower vendor couldn’t
get top two sections; found
another vendor with all pieces
for $400 less.
28th •Local engineer offered to
construct tower. No charge.
29th •Local firm offers to
build tower foundation. No
charge.
26th •FAA

Luis Hernandez, called 3ABN
Radio to ask if it was possible
to build a radio station in
one month. We said yes, but
they’d have to hurry . . . and
they did!
Luis and friend, Ed Medford,
spent a solid month on nothing
but radio. The two men soon
found themselves, as Luis says,
30th •Electrician hired to wire
studio; contractor wanted to
reschedule cement work — he
didn’t realize the deadline was
non-negotiable — contractor rearranged his schedule
instead.
February
2nd •
Water pipe (2-inch main)
hit while digging tower foundation; plumber came right
away. No charge.
3rd • Trouble getting receiver
tuned.
4th • Foundation poured;
rain started just as they finished; during a break in the
rain, Luis went up on the
roof again to turn (kick) the
dish to get the receiver tuned
— and it worked!
10th •Crane arrived; tower
raised. You guessed it: No
charge.
11th •If you think those were
major hurdles, wait . . . they
had no transmitter!
12th •Still no transmitter. It
was sitting in Virginia — with
two days left! They installed
the antenna on tower. Talk
about faith!
13th •Snowed three inches,
with ice. Ed called Luis in the
morning and asked, “How’s
your faith today?” Luis had
asked Ed that same question every morning, so now
it was Ed’s turn! UPS didn’t
open until 4:00 p.m., but they
opened the doors at 8:30 a.m.
just to give Ed the transmitter.
Connections made, testing
done by 2:30 p.m., and on
the air at 3:00. Filed online
for license. No problem. Even
had a couple hours left over!
They praised the Lord!
14th •And on Sabbath they
rested.
Luis, not one to ask for help,
said, “If God doesn’t want you
to go it alone, He’ll bring people
into your life to help do what
needs to be done!”

Arise
&
Shine

“I
am here to find out why
channel 21 is not on the
air.” Laura was a Pentecostal believer that had been
watching 3ABN Latino on a
local channel in Puerto Rico
that had been purchased by
3ABN more than ten years
ago. Unfortunately, due to new
digital television regulations, we
were required to stop broadcasting while the Federal Communications Commission granted
us channel 44 to replace it, and
there was a period of time when
3ABN Latino was not on the air
in that area. That’s when Laura
visited the Magnolia Seventhday Adventist Church in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, to ask about
the station.
After that, she continued
visiting the church on a weekly
basis, and we praise the Lord
that after a recent evangelistic
series, Laura was one of the pre-
cious souls that made a decision
to be baptized just a few weeks
ago. She tells us that it was the
programming on 3ABN Latino
that convinced her that what
she was hearing was truth.
But don’t turn the page!
There’s more.
Lourdes was a night club
singer who suffered from severe
depression because her son was
in prison. Her whole life seemed
made up of one problem after
another. One night she came
home from a party intoxicated.
She cried as she considered her
problems, and she felt that they
were the cause of the crushing
pain in her chest. She poured
out a handful of sleeping pills
and was considering taking the
whole bottle, hoping that she
would never wake up again.
While she was thinking these
things, she turned on the TV. As
she flipped through the chan-
nels, she discovered one she
had never seen before — it was
3ABN Latino.
As she told me her story she
began to weep. “God spoke to
me through the man that was
on that program,” she said. “I
heard the words, ‘Why are you
carrying such a heavy burden

In her intoxicated condition
she recognized that God was
speaking to her, and in tears
she prayed and gave her heart
to Jesus Christ. With joy in her
voice, Lourdes told me that she
slept that night with a peace
she had never known before!
It is my great joy to report that
on the same day that Laura
was baptized, Lourdes was also
baptized — in the same church!
Please remember Laura and
Lourdes in your prayers.
But while 3ABN Latino con
tinues to grow rapidly in other
countries, it has been extremely
difficult to get cable systems in
the United States to add us to
their lineup. But we celebrate
each victory — and praise God:
3ABN Latino can now be seen
in New Britain, Pennsylvania!
This is only the second cable
system to add 3ABN Latino
in the United States. Please
pray that this year many more
will do so! Much remains to
be done within the shadow of
our doors.
I encourage you to consider
God’s invitation to you this year,
“Arise, shine; for your light has
come! And the glory of the Lord
is risen upon you. For behold,
the darkness shall cover the
earth, and deep darkness the
people; but the Lord will arise
over you, and His glory will be
seen upon you.” Isaiah 60:1–2
(NKJV).

Life
Unfolding
Exactly as it should
Feature
O
ver the past 21 years
there have been thousands of inspiring stories
on 3ABN. But among those
thousands, there’s a story that
is still unfolding — the story of
Annette Christian.
When her first marriage
ended, Annette was left alone
to care for her young daughter.
Born to a Sicilian father and an
Irish-German mother, she was
never afraid of hard work. Some
of the jobs she took included
writing a newspaper column,
and working as an adult education counselor and a part-time
psychiatric nurse. But when she
began working as a night shift
nurse, she was so pale and weak
that her daughter began to worry
that her mother was dying!
Her next job was working
at a radio station, where she
met Jay, a tall, handsome man
with an incredible passion for
everything New Age. “He kept
telling me that I would make a
fabulous New Ager,” she says
with a laugh. “He would talk
about the Bible and kept telling
me that it was really good for its
time, but that we were so much
more advanced now.” Annette
realized that Jay had grown up
in a church that taught an angry,
punishing God, but she also recognized a seeker’s heart, and she
never missed an opportunity to
share her faith in a winsome,
attractive way.
Jay eventually attended
church with her, partly out of
curiosity and also because he
wanted to meet the pastor. His
hope was to convince Annette,
and even the pastor, to become
New Age believers! But his plan
was in vain, because in a short
time he became a Seventh-day
Adventist himself!
“One day, he called to say
hello,” Annete recounts, “but
the real shock came a moment
later when he asked me to marry
him! I remember telling him,
‘No! I haven’t even dated you,
why should I marry you?’ But
later, the Lord impressed me
that I should not take his marriage proposal lightly.”
After their marriage, her
career as a marketing director for a long-term health care
corporation thrived. Jay was
the general manager for Blue
Mountain Television, and their
lives were busy and happy. Jay’s
new book detailing his New
Age experiences landed him
an interview on 3ABN Presents, and not long after, they
both received a phone call from
3ABN inviting them to join the
staff.
“This was not an easy decision,” Annette adds. “I wanted
to be involved in a more direct
ministry, but it was a struggle to
give up my career. I had found
the first house that felt like

home, and there were plenty
of incentives to stay where we
were.” Her daughter Cari also
struggled. She finally had the
family she longed for, and now
her decision would make the
difference on whether the family
would move or not.
Finally, Cari decided that
if she received a request from
3ABN for her résumé, it would
be a sign from God. She told no
one about this, and when she
received an unsolicited phone
call from 3ABN asking for her
résumé, she was convinced!
For several years they worked
happily at 3ABN, but then tragedy struck. In 2000 Annette was
diagnosed with breast cancer
and underwent surgery. She
made drastic changes in her diet
and lifestyle, but continued to
suffer pain in her spine and hip.
Finally, she was incapacitated,
and forced into bed rest. For
the next few years she cheer3ABN World : January 2006 19
fully gave the Lord thanks for
her life, but living with chronic
pain disguised the fact that the
cancer had returned — this time
to her bones.
“On November 26, 2004, I
got into my bathtub and took
my Bible with me. I told the
Lord, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong

with me, but You do, and I’m
in Your will.’ I was so weak I
couldn’t even turn the pages!”
she recounts. “Finally the Lord
gave me enough energy to just
open my Bible, and He made
sure I opened it to Psalm 30, ‘O
Lord my God, I cried out to You,
and You healed me. O Lord, You
brought my soul up from the
grave; You have kept me alive,
that I should not go down to
the pit…. You have put off my
sackcloth and clothed me with
gladness….’ ”
“I read the chapter and it
brought hope to me,” Annette
continued, “but I didn’t know
if I’d just found this by accident.
So I prayed, ‘Please give me
another scripture that tells me
that it’s for me!’ ” Her Bible fell
open to 3 John 2: “Beloved, I
pray that you may prosper in
all things and be in health, just
as your soul prospers.”
Annette felt the Lord was saying that her spiritual life must
prosper before her physical
healing, but then she asked for
another scripture that she didn’t
have to look for. Next, her Bible
fell open to John 4 and 5 and
the stories of Jesus’ miraculous
healings.
Soon the test results came
back. “The doctors told my
husband that the cancer was
widespread and nothing could
be done for me except to control
my pain until the end,” she says.
“My response was, ‘Man’s hands
usually mess up everything
they touch anyway. Now I’m in
God’s hands, and they’re perfect
hands, so everything will be
exactly as it should be.’ ”
Her family and 3ABN’s staff
were devastated. Her pastor
and a handful of church members gathered around her for an
anointing ceremony outlined
in the Bible. When everyone
else left, one friend remained
behind. “I was floored when
he told me to get up and walk,
but I did it! I got up and walked
three or four times around the
kitchen. Soon my color began to
return, and I began to eat, and
the slow process of improvement started.
“People are looking for a miracle, but I think they’re looking
for magic,” she says. “I think
God has dealt with me in this
way because spiritual healing
has to come a day at a time.
The real miracle is that I have
one more day, one more choice,
and one more battle of faith to
fight. The miracle is that I have
time to do it.
“Sure, God could have healed
me instantly,” she says, “but God
expects me to do everything in
my power to cooperate with
Him, and I have to make sure
that my faith is solid.”
Throughout her illness,
Annette has continued to speak
and sing in churches. She also
produces Auntie Annie’s The
StoryHouse, and this month she
began co-hosting a new pro
gram with 3ABN Radio veteran,
Theresa Boote, called Women at
the Well. This program is produced by Nikki Anderson and
takes the stories of the women
of the Bible and draws modern-day applications from their
inspiring lives.
“Having this disease is a
blessing,” she adds. “Because
I’ve had cancer I’ve had time
to write, to think, and to give
people material that can change
their lives.”
What keeps her going in the
difficult days? Lots of prayers,
and lots of Bible promises. “The
Bible says, ‘Let the weak say I
am strong,’ so I do. The Bible
says to reach out our hand, and
I do that, literally, many times
when I’m in pain. I’ve even
claimed the promise that what
we bind on earth will be bound
in heaven. I’ve prayed, ‘Lord,
in the name of Jesus I am going
to bind this pain,’ and bang, it
was gone!
“There’s nothing anybody can
do for me — for my illness. God
has to be real. He wants me to try
and to test Him. He reminds me
again and again who He is, and
who I am.” She smiles and adds,
“All is working out — exactly as
it is supposed to.” 3ABN World : January 2006 21

a really neat teamwork picture this month! (She’s really good with colors! Even
though the snow is cold, the colors are warm!) So find something you can do
as a team, and I’ll see you next month!

feet shod with the preparation of
the gospel of peace”

salesmen to a faraway
country to explore the new
market. After a few days, one
salesman wrote back a telegram:
“I am returning shortly. Dead
end! Nobody here wears shoes.”
The other salesman also sent a
telegram: “Urgently send me a
large supply of shoes. Everybody here walks barefooted!”
Scandinavia is a place where
few people, spiritually speaking,
“wear shoes.” Yet the greater the
need, the greater the possibilities to reach “barefooted” souls
for Christ, and the greater the
grace He is ready to bestow.
Soon LifeStyleTV will start
broadcasting from southern
Sweden, targeting the whole
of Scandinavia. 3ABN pres-
ently covers Europe through the
Hotbird satellite, and we have
heard of several people coming
in contact with the Seventh-day
Adventist message by watching.
But in Scandinavia few people

been praying for a way to reach
a much larger audience. The
Lord has now miraculously
opened the door to broadcast
LifeStyleTV as part of the Canal
Digitals Family Package, as well
as free-to-air, on the Thor II
satellite. This is the most popular satellite in Scandinavia, the
equivalent of the DISH Network
or DIRECTV systems in the
United States. Can you even
begin to imagine the potential
of reaching five million satellite viewers — over a fifth of
the Scandinavian population
— twenty-four hours a day, with
the gospel?

New Book:
The Gift
of Tongues
A
new book by Hal Steenson entitled, The
Gift of Tongues — From Heaven’s Point of
View, is now available from 3ABN! As a
member of our Pastoral Ministries team, Hal has
answered hundreds of questions about the gifts of
the Holy Spirit, and recently sat down to write a
short statement to e-mail to anyone who may be
asking the same questions. What happened,
though, is that he wrote a whole book!
Hal and Mollie Steenson moved to
southern Illinois 24 years ago and founded
a rapidly growing Charismatic church,
where speaking in tongues was seen as

“I was taught that tongues were the
physical supernatural evidence,” he says,
“but I grew increasingly uncomfortable with the
idea. When the Lord opened my eyes to the truth
of His Word, I was relieved, because I had shelved
my tongues years before.”
“Jesus first commissioned this gift in Mark
16:17,” he continues. “It says, ‘And these signs
shall follow them that believe: In My name shall
they cast out devils; they shall speak with new
tongues.’ There is no mention of ‘unknown’
tongues as Jesus gave the disciples their prime
directive about how and where to use this divine
gift. Matthew 28:19 states, ‘Go ye therefore, and
teach all nations…’ How could the disciples go,
teach, and baptize people in all nations if they
couldn’t speak their language? They couldn’t, and
I believe that this is the one and only reason for
the gift of tongues. This gift is not used for any
other purpose in Scripture than to proclaim the
gospel of Jesus Christ.”
In this new book, Hal explains simple foundational principles for the correct use of the gifts of
the Holy Spirit, which were being misused in the
Corinthian church. He explores the truth about
tongues, as well as the errors and the exploitation
of this truth by many misinformed Christians.
