WELCOME
Hello to all our friends of the German Shepherd Dog,
On behalf of the German Shepherd Schutzhund Club of Canada, Western Region, and the 2013 National
Championship Committee, I want to send a warm message of thanks to all of you for attending our 34th annual
National German Shepherd Championship and Sieger show.
I want to particularly thank the members from the Western Region who formed the 2013 National
Championship Committee, volunteering their time and experience. As you can see from our surroundings,
organizing an event like this is not a small task. Their energy and dedication made it possible.
The Fraser Valley of British Columbia is a special place. There is a wonderful diversity in this region and we
are delighted that we could hold this event in these beautiful surroundings. The 2013 National Championship
Committee thanks the City of Abbotsford and Abbotsford Tourism for all their help and guidance.
One other very important thank you must be extended to Art Postma and his family. Mr. Postma has allowed
us to use his fields for the tracking portion of this competition. Without people like Mr. Postma and his
generosity, our particular dog sport could not continue. Thank you.
The 2013 National Championship Committee has done its very best to make this competition as fair and
consistent as possible. We have selected judges who share this commitment. We know that the winners at
the completion of this four day event will have earned their titles.
In the end, the true winners of this event will be those of you who, like us, are dedicated to the continued
improvement of our German Shepherd Dog and the spectators who will have the opportunity to watch what we
know will be a very exciting competition

HEAD JUDGE
Frank Mensing
Mr. Mensing has been a member of the SV since 1972 and was the founding president of the
GSSCC (1979) He is an honorary lifetime member of the GSSCC.
He is a two time Canadian Sch. Champion and a WUSV WM competitor representing Canada
twice in the early 80’s.
He has been a German shepherd breeder since 1972 under the Kennel name “Norbreeze”.
SIEGER SHOW JUDGE
SV Wilhelm Nordsieck
In 1973: against the will of his parents he bought himself a German shepherd puppy for the
first time (Gany vom Fiemereck).
In 1983 he became a member of the SV.
In 1989 he began breeding German Shepherd dogs under the kennel name “vom Externstein
In 1990: Boss vom Externstein • placed V 22 GHKl males in the Siegerschau’ in Frankfurt:
In 2000 he was appointed to be a judge of the SV -Since that time he is very active, judging
many of shows in Germany .
PERFORMANCE JUDGE
SV Rainer Voortman
Mr. Voortman has been a member of the SV member since 1980 and has been judging since
2005. He has judged national Schutzhund Championship in various countries. He has also
captained and evaluated the Spanish WUSV team since 2006.
He has been a competitor in various Regional and National Championships in Germany. Best
result was the 5th place at the BSP with "Kinte de Parayas".
He is active as a Working line german shepherd breeder with the kennel name "de Bellaterra".
TRACKING JUDGE Raino Flugge
Mr Flugge has been a member of the SV (Germany) since 1976, and a member of the German
Shepherd SC of Canada member since 2001 he is a past President of the GSSCC.
He has been an SV working Judge since 1993. He has represented Canada as a WUSV WM
competitor.
He is an active German shepherd breeder under the kennel name " vom Kiebitzende" •

Championship and Sieger show. I wish all the competitors the best of luck in the event. I would also like to

Finally thank you to all the spectators for coming out and supporting the competitors. A lot of work goes into
training a dog to this level and the biggest appreciation the competitors get is from the spectators in the stands.

Why Protection
The well informed understand that all dogs bite because
biting is an integral part of their natural social and survival
behavior.
It is not possible to actually teach a dog to bite. We can
only teach them when it is, and is not appropriate.
The uninformed may argue that it is wrong to train dogs in
aggression or protection because it teaches dogs to bite
people. That is a perception not based on fact nor accurate
knowledge of dogs and dog behavior.
The sport educates both handler and dog in responsible
behaviors making both better informed.
Schutzhund training and testing of dogs in protection and
aggression skills is very important because it creates a
safer and more reliable dog. It teaches the dog to
recognize the difference between threatening situations,
and passive or surrender situations.
Training teaches the dog to be controllable under
provocation and identifies those dogs that can not be
readily controlled.
Almost all recorded unprovoked bites on people are
from pet dogs that are not trained in any way.
Proper Schutzhund training significantly decreases the risk
of unprovoked bites because absolute obedience is an
integral part of the training.

Why test the dogs
German Shepherds are assigned to the majority of police,
military service dog and search & rescue roles for good
reason. They are the product of a realistic and
comprehensive civilian based training, testing and breeding
program called Schutzhund.
This 113 year old civilian program is free to the tax payer
and for the most part, relieves the police services and their
valuable resources to focus on their core business, of
policing, not dog breeding.
To provide these remarkably talented dogs for public
service we train and then test them in Tracking, Obedience
and Protection before we breed them. (Protection is really
obedience under extreme distraction and/or duress) It is
from this process that the vast majority of service dogs
come.

It is extremely important to know if the dog is capable
before it is deployed because lives may depend on it.
We really do need to know all of the above and more,
before each dog is to be bred, so that they do not pass on
the wrong tendencies to the next generations.
The ability to handle adversity is essential for both a
service and a sport dog. That ability is all rolled up in
their genes, and that package includes their natural or
“genetic” talent for hunting and protecting.
Training and testing of dogs in protection skills is a very
important element for the selection of suitable candidates
for breeding because it identifies some very significant
qualities and traits within each dog.
Before we put a dog into service:
We really do need to know if the dog would retreat or even
hide behind the police handler when there is a threat or risk
to deal with.
We really do need to know that a dog can stay controllable
to the handler when engaged in physically subduing an
individual and we need to know that before it is deployed.
We really do need to know if a dog becomes uncontrollable
when engaged in a confrontation.
We really do need to know if the dog's ability to engage in
physically subduing an individual is affected by travel in
cars, trucks, boats, planes or helicopters, or by loud noises,
gun fire, lightning & thunder, severe weather, heavy traffic,
unstable or slippery surfaces, heights and stressed &
traumatized people.
Training and testing the dog in protection exposes the dogs
to many of those situations and helps to identify those dogs

The German Shepherd Schutzhund Clubs of Canada
The beginnings of the working German shepherd dog and the
founding organization (SV) started in Germany in the early
1900s and spread throughout Europe and around the world.
THE CORPORATION
More commonly known as the GSSCC, The German Shepherd
Schutzhund Club of Canada is a corporation with members
and member clubs in all of the provinces and one of the
territories.
The GSSCC was formed and accepted as Canada's official
representative in the World Union of Shepherd Clubs (WUSV)
in 1979.
The Corporation is structured in such a way that all member
clubs must register and operate as non-profit societies. The
GSSCC is divided into Regions with each Region administered
by an executive board to better address the local needs and to
provide more efficient service and support.
The GSSCC Western Region
The Western Region of the German Shepherd Schutzhund
Club of Canada, includes all of British Columbia and the
Yukon.
The original Club in the region was the Western Rescue &
Schutzhund Club. The club was founded by Eric Morphy and
was situated in the municipality of Langley, BC, mid way
between Langley and Aldergrove.
The formation of the Western Region as well as the Prairie
Region, the Ontario Region and the Eastern region took place
around 1988 when the growth of the sport in Canada
necessitated the subdividing of the country into smaller areas.
It was thought the sport could be developed better by the
addition of local leadership.
The Western Region is currently comprised of 11 clubs. Three
on Vancouver Island, one in Surrey, three in Langley, one in
Kelowna, two in Prince George and one in the Yukon.
Clubs in Kelowna, Kamloops and Quesnel have been
members intermittently but have struggled from the lack of
experienced people to maintain a solid core of interested
handlers.
