Feel like running wild? South Somerset is a place where you can explore
nature and watch wildlife
The rights of way network extends over 1,100
miles of paths and tracks making it the ideal escape
for ramblers and walkers. The diverse landscape
includes wooded hills and lush valleys and the
fascinating Somerset Levels and Moors - one of
the lowest and flattest places in the UK and an
important habitat.
You can see buzzards and kingfishers, otters and
water voles. Swell Wood has the largest grey
heron colony in the west country. On the Levels in
winter, huge numbers of starlings perform amazing
acrobatics in the evening before they roost and all
year round you can listen for the trumpeting call
of the majestic crane, reintroduced to Somerset
after 400 years.
If you like to enjoy the outdoor life at a gentle
pace, visit the Green Flag Country Parks. Yeovil
offers a green breathing space close to the
bustling heart of the town. Ham Hill is an ancient
hill-fort with great views and perfect to picnic.
The parks are well signposted and offer good
access with car parking and all-ability footpaths.
At Chard reservoir nature reserve there is a fullyaccessible bird hide with a board listing the latest
sightings - grebes, kingfishers and little egrets are
often seen.

A range of organisations look after
Somerset’s countryside, helping
nature to thrive and people to
work and enjoy their leisure-time
without harm to the environment.
These organisations offer many
opportunities to get out there
learning countryside skills and
heritage crafts, watching animals
and birds, or volunteering for
conservation work. How about
after-dark orienteering or a walk
discovering wild flowers?
Perhaps you prefer a spot of
fishing, or simply to roam…

interesting and fun activities.
Cranes on the Levels
Cranes are free flying and very mobile, turning up in pastures,
meadows and arable stubbles over a wide area. Improve your
chances of seeing them by looking first at the sightings pages
on the Great Crane Project website. Please do not disturb the
cranes and always follow the countryside code.

Walking
South Somerset is great walking country with an extensive network
of footpaths. You can set your own pace following recommended
town walks and routes around the Country Parks. Some of these
are all-ability trails, suitable if you use a wheelchair or buggy.
Stretch your legs a bit further using walks packs like Walking
the Hills and Vales around Yeovil, available from Information
Centres. There are also long distance trails across the district.
The Leland Trail follows the footsteps of 16th century traveller
John Leland, from King Alfred’s Tower to Ham Hill. It joins there
with the Liberty Trail, continuing cross-country to Lyme Regis.

The living heart of Somerset with plenty to keep you entertained, from stylish
clothes shops to galleries brimming with the work of local artists.
The towns have their serious side too. Look
around to discover our heritage in beautiful
churches and houses, puzzling street names and
buildings that stand testimony to the traditional
industries from which these towns grew –
agriculture, rope, sail and glove-making. The best
way to discover and enjoy all that the towns have
to offer is on foot. Local Information Centres will
give you town trail leaflets to take you around
the important features and best beauty spots.
And when you’re weary from exploring, seek out
one of the many places to eat and drink. From
quaint hostelries to modern bistros, you’ll find
a place to suit your mood and your pocket.

Discover our Heritage
The past is all around waiting to be explored – in beautiful buildings and ancient
sites, traditions and folklore.
Concealed beneath the hilly woodlands and
meadows of Ham Hill Country Park is an Iron Age
hill fort, the largest of its kind in Britain. A three-year
project began in 2011, to explore the archaeology
of the site. Visit the Ham Hill Education Centre for
information on summer tours of the dig, or look at
the website below.
Tracing family history? Every village and hamlet has
a church with monuments. Every town has a war
memorial and many have a small museum. In the

South Somerset has a rich industrial heritage from
agriculture and making rope and sails for Nelson’s
navy to the manufacture of leather gloves, engines
and aircraft. At the peak of the gloving industry in
the mid 1800s, three million pairs of gloves were
made in one year and there were 40 factories.
Many of these buildings have been renovated as
houses and apartments. Now Yeovil is most famous
for making helicopters which can often be seen
