FIRST DANCE
After recording a fourth-place finish in the MidAmerican Conference in 1986-87, the Eastern Michigan
University men’s basketball team entered the 198788 season with hopes of challenging for the league
title.
The then-Hurons did indeed win the school’s firstever MAC men’s basketball title and a whole lot more
by the time the season officially came to a close, March
18, 1988, in Lincoln, Neb.
Senior center Grant Long and freshman point guard
Lorenzo Neely were the catalysts for an over-achieving
EMU squad that won the MAC regular-season and
post -season titles, while qualifying for the school’s
first-ever NCAA-Division I Tournament appearance.
With Long providing the inside scoring punch with
a 23.2 scoring average and Neely running the offense
as the point guard, the Hurons won the MAC’s regularseason title with a 14-2 record.
Heading into the MAC Tournament as the No.
1 seed, the Green and White knocked off Western
Michigan, 95-88, in the first round and handed Ohio
University a 94-80 setback in the championship tilt.
From there it was on to the Bob Devaney Sports
Complex at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for
the NCAA regional.
The No. 15-seeded Hurons squared off against
the No. 2-seeded University of Pittsburgh in the first
round, March 18, 1988. The Panthers, paced by the
highly touted threesome of Charles Smith (31 points),
Demetreus Gore (24 points) and Jerome Lane (22),
knocked off the Hurons by a 108-90 count.
Eastern was led by guard Brad Soucie with 26.
Long, in foul trouble from the start, was limited to 15
points. Neely added 18 points.
For the season, Long was named MAC Player of
the Year and Neely was named MAC Freshman of the
Year.
