"Dear Host Family" Letter
Dear Host Family,
My name is Marcilio, I am 23 years old, I graduated in International Relations in December 2011
and I study Foreign Languages Applied to International Negotiation. I am a very respectful person,
polite, gentle, lovely, sympathetic and responsible. At least that is what people always say about
me. In my free time, I like staying at home watching TV programs, different kinds of movies, such as
horror, science fiction and romantic comedy, series like The American Horror Stories, Smallville,
True Blood, The Games of Thrones, Glee, The Wizards of Waverly Place, etc. I love listening to
songs from Adele, Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, Coldplay, U2, Enrique Iglesias, The Wanted,
Rihanna, Kate Perry,LMFAO, Bruno Mars, Maroon Five, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. I like walking,
swimming and working out, but sometimes I play soccer with my little brother. When I am not
reading books from the university, I read books such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The
Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, The Twilight Saga,
etc. Sometimes I go to the cinema with friends, I go to the beach, I walk along the beach, etc. And
finally, when I have time I help my mother and my grandmother with the home services. I clean up
the house, bathing the pets, and I also take care of my little brother.
Besides Portuguese and English, I also speak a little bit of Spanish and French, I have been
studied these two languages since 2010. I love studying new languages, and in order to improve
my English I went to USA in 2010. I stayed there one month. I lived in San Diego, California, from
December 12th 2010 to January 15th 2011. It has been the best experience of my life until today.
There I lived with an American family, the Wakayama’s, who I keep in touch until today. This
experience provided me a feeling that I will never forget, and that is why, I would like to go to the
USA again. Furthermore, in my opinion, having this rich opportunity of living and working with an
American family is the best way to learn about the United States, their culture and lifestyle.
I live in João Pessoa, the city where I was born. It is located in the northeast of Brazil. It is not a very
big town, it is calm, lovely, pretty and it also has many beautiful beaches. Because of these
characteristics, retired people from other parts of Brazil and from other countries too are coming to
live here.
My parents are divorced and I live with my mother, my stepfather, my grandmother, my sister and
my little brother. My father has another family. He lives with my stepmother. From my father`s side I
have two brothers and three sisters. Moreover I have many uncles and cousins. In short, I have a
big family that loves me and supports me in everything. I feel so blessed for it. Among my seven
siblings I have just three older than me. The others are teenagers and one is infant, he is 4 years
old. My for years old is my pet, he is so cute and so funny. My mother is a housewife and my father
is a teacher. All my older siblings are graduated (Phonoaudiology and Law) and all my younger
siblings are at school.
I have many plans for my future. For my profession, I think that learn new languages is very
important as a differential, at least four languages besides Portuguese. Thus, the first thing that I
intend is to speak English fluently. Because of this, is very important stay for one year in an
Anglophone country like United States. Moreover, spending one year in a different country I will
learn a new culture, something extremely important for an international negotiator. Before the au
pair program, I intend spend three months in a Hispanic country to improve my Spanish. When I
return to Brazil I will finish my second graduation and after travel to China and spend more one year
outside of Brazil and learn mandarin. After these plans, I would try a master or a MBA. There are
many plans, but I just know that I wish to invest in my learning, especially linguistic, to assure a
great job in the future. The beginning of my career I intend to work in the private sector but in the
more distant future I intend to work in the public sector, perhaps as a diplomat.
I think that all or almost all families should ask themselves why the applicant wants to be an au pair.
So why do I want to be an au pair in USA? I met this kind of program about three years ago looking
for an exchange program. Since then, I have read blogs from females and males au pairs and
information about the program. My will in become an au pair grows every day. I found in this
program the better way to do what I like and what is important for me: to take care of children and to
become my English fluent, I mean join business with pleasure. Fluent English is primordial for my
profession. In my opinion, it is necessary to begin my professional life. This unique experience will
provide me a personal and professional growth. I will gain not just money, it is not the most
important, but I will gain a new family, new friends and an important cultural knowledge.
I have a driven license since 2007, but I have driven since 2008. I started to drive in a car with a
stickshift transmission, but nowadays I drive in a car with automatic transmission. I consider myself
a nice driver. Four years driving as in the city and other cities as in highways I gained experience
and confidence to drive. Furthermore I've never had auto penalties.
I have worked taking care of children since I was 18 years old. Someday the Raposo family who
lived near my house asked me if I would like helping caring of their baby, so as I love children I
accepted. At the begin was hard, because I had never took care of any kid outside of my family, but
I did my job and today it is a nice job for me. It was my first job caring for children, working with them
since 2006 when the little girl was just seven months old. Today she is 6 years old. I work with them
five days per week, sometimes weekends night when I am available. I use to make meals, play
with her at home and outdoor, sometimes pick up her at school, help with her homework, we watch
cartoons, etc. I love her as my own child.
Was my hostmother who introduced me to the others current families who I work for. My other
current second job is with the Guedes family. At the begin in 2007, I worked five days per week
during two years, but nowadays, because of my time I just can work for them two days per week.
With them, I take care of two kids, 12 years old and almost 6 years old girls. I use to make meals,
help with homework, play with both, sometimes go to the cinema watch cartoons, go to the park,
etc. Nowadays, with nights care, I put them to the bed too. And finally, the last one is the Barros
family. I work them since 2008. The hostmother of this family is the first family hostfather’s sister.
This job is like a babysitter job. I just take care of the kids, a 13 years old girl and 5 years old boy,
two Sundays or Saturdays per month during the night. So I just read books for the younger,
prepare meal, play games, play on the garden, entertain them, put them to bed, etc. I look forward
