PEACE RIVER
• Named in the 1700’s when a truce was agreed to after a long
battle between the Cree and the Beaver native aboriginal tribes
and the great river they called Unchaga [Peace] became the
boundary between their hunting territories.
• Originates in the Rocky Mountains
• Length 1923 km and drains an area of 293,000 square kilometers
• Level fluctuations are influenced by the WAC Bennett Power

First mill specifically designed to produce
Aspen Hardwood Kraft pulp
The Peace River pulp mill uses high quality aspen and
balsam poplar trees for their HW furnish , and spruce/ Pine
for SW.
“Continuous Kraft” process
The mill is legislated environmentally to control emissions to
the atmosphere and to effluent discharged back to the eco
system.
As of today DMI is completely self sustained in terms of
power supply

PRPD Challenges
• Rising costs vs Pulp Pricing.
• Transportation
– For chips – Up to 350 km from mill.
– For Pulp – Customers are not near mill
• China, Japan, USA are major export markets.
• 1200 kms from nearest port.
• Closest US customer 2600 kms away
– For inputs
• Chemicals
– Caustic, acid, chlorate etc etc.
PRPD Challenges
• Energy cost and efficiency
– Every MWh not used can be exported and
sold to the power grid.
– Every tonne of steam not consummed can be
turned into electricity for export.
– Every tonne of hog fuel (waste wood) not
required can be diverted to other processes.
– Every cubic meter of water not needed does
not have to be treated, heated, cleaned and
returned.
Opportunities
• Whole tree debarking and
chipping:
– Slash and residues are
underutilized.
– Estimated to have 1 million
tonnes of accessible and
sustainable residues.
– Looking for ways to
improve yields and lower
transport costs.
– Looking for technologies to
use residues that are
financially viable.
• Densification, in bush
converstion.
Opportunities
• Multiple under utilized waste or process
streams:
– Waste fiber is incinerated
• fines from screening pulp chips
• Small fiber that is loss during pulp process.
– Organic sludge from ASB is land applied
– Dregs and grits are landfilled.
– Stripper off gases (high in MeOH) are
incinerated in lime kiln
– Black liquor is densified and burned for power
and recovery of chemicals.
Other opportunities
• Under utilization of undersized wood
stands:
– May never be merchandizable as pulp or saw
wood.
– Need to find processes that are viable in
coverting this wood into value added
products:
• Fuels, chemicals, building materials, bio
enhancements.
Thank you

Global Semi Chemical Wood Pulp Market

Global Semi Chemical Wood Pulp Market The pulp is defined as the lignocellulosic fibrous material that is prepared by chemically or mechanically separating the cellulose fibres from wood or waste paper. There are various ways of manufacturing wood pulp; mechanical methods, chemical methods. Chemical pulping uses various chemicals to separate cellulose from lignin. The wood pulp thus created provides very high quality paper. The different types of chemical pulping methods are kraft, sulfite, and semi chemical pulping methods.
