The Westcott House Foundation and Springfield Preservation Alliance join forces —
A new level of community engagement
T
wo Springfield groups dedicated to
promoting local architecture, design
and historic preservation have joined
forces to enable a new level of community
engagement. The new partnership – the
Westcott Center for Architecture + Design
– was formed with the intent of establishing a more prominent presence for architecture and design education in the region.
The Westcott House Foundation,
a non-profit organization and a steward
of one of the most significant landmarks
in Ohio – Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westcott
House – has dedicated its first eight years of
operation to growing educational programs
and expanding its role as a cultural and
economic asset for the region. A unique
and impeccably restored work of America’s
most famous architect has drawn tens of
thousands of visitors from outside Clark
County, while nurturing the local community through innovative programs including
multimedia design studios, concerts, and
exhibitions.

was established in 2003 to recognize,
preserve, and revitalize the architectural

A new home for the Foundation!
The Springfield Foundation has moved their offices to the Riverbend Office Building
located at 333 N. Limestone Street, Suite 201, Springfield, Ohio. The new office will
enable the organization to conduct more of their meetings regarding their services onsite
and to have all of their files in one area. Ted Vander Roest, Executive Director, stated
“Although our new offices are still quite modest, it will be more efficient to have everything we need to conduct business with additional parking and more accessibility. We are
excited to be more visible to the community.“ The staff invites anyone who would like a
short tour to stop by anytime!

Director’s
Message
This is the
Foundation’s
65th year! The
Foundation has
accomplished
a lot over the
years, we have
distributed over
$28 million
in grants and
scholarships and our assets are at
$64 million. None of this could be
possible without all of the caring
and thoughtful people that have
partnered with us over the years. A
big thank you to all of them!
As mentioned in the cover article,
the Foundation has relocated to the
Riverbend Office Building. Over
the last several years there has been
a desire to find a location that has
more visibility; we feel that Riverbend will allow us to have more of a
presence. Stop by the new location
and say hello.
The trustees and staff of the
Foundation are always looking for
ways to use our grant dollars to provide the most benefit. One method
we are going to use is allocating
some of our grant funds on initiatives in the community. The hope
is that by focusing our resources on
a certain area we can have more of
an impact. Other ideas are being
explored and more information will
be provided in future newsletters.

Welcome New Funds
Dr. Barbara J. Abma Memorial Fund
was established in January, 2013 through
funds remaining in Dr. Abma’s Charitable
Checking upon her death along with gifts
from her family and friends. Annually the
income from the Fund will be distributed in
Dr. Abma’s memory to the Humane Society
of Clark County, Women’s Partnership Fund
in Clark County and Planned Parenthood
Federation of America.
Harold Austin and Elizabeth Danielle
Chovan Goodrich Fund was finalized
in January, 2013. This is a Donor Advised
Fund that will make various charitable distributions as recommended by the family. The
Fund decisions will later be continued by
the second generation two daughters.
Community Hospital Health Services
Foundation transferred their endowment
valued at approximately $15 million dollars
to the Springfield Foundation. This partnership to assist them in the stewardship of
their funds will strengthen the mission of
CHF which provides health care and educational services in the community.
Northwestern-Clark HS Class of 1965
Education Enrichment Fund was formed
by the alumni Class of 1965 for the purpose
of funding in-school enrichment programs
for grade k-12 students in the Northwestern
Clark School District to support student
educational programs the school could not
otherwise fund.

at growing awareness and appreciation of
Springfield’s architectural history while connecting residents with their community.
Through the years, these groups have
collaborated on many programs, including the Design Detectives Summer Camp,
PechaKucha Springfield Ohio, and History
Hymns & Holly. Kevin Rose, founder of the
Springfield Preservation Alliance said, “It
was a natural next step for both groups to
forge a stronger alliance that allows us to
speak with one voice on the role of the built
environment in creating a strong sense of
place in the Greater Springfield Region.”
Marta Wojcik, Executive Director and
Curator of the Westcott House said, “Some
people have a misconception that the Westcott House exists solely to offer tours of the
museum. While this is an essential part of
what we do and we take pride in attracting so many visitors to our community,
meaningful educational outreach has been
our focus. Our new partnership with the
Springfield Preservation Alliance is an ideal
way to make these efforts more prominent
and long-lasting.”
To the partnership, the Alliance brings
a wealth of knowledge and a deep under-
standing of the region’s historic fabric.
Westcott House brings national recognition and vital local programming, as well as
staffing resources, grant writing experience
and infrastructure that allows the missions
of both organizations to carry on in a very
effective way.
To support the activities of the CA+D,
the Springfield Preservation Alliance has
established a $30,000 endowment at the
Springfield Foundation. This fund, with
mechanisms in place for continued longterm growth, will help ensure that these
vital programs have a solid future in our
community. All donations to this fund
directly support programs on architecture,
design, and historic preservation in the
greater Springfield Region. In addition, the
Springfield Foundation also manages an
endowment dedicated to the preservation
and long-term care of the Westcott House.

New and Departing Trustees
Trustees Gus Geil and Robyn Koch-
Schumaker, whose terms have expired with
the Springfield Foundation, were given
recognition at the
December, 2012
Full Board meeting.
Mr Geil joined the
Board in June, 1999
and Mrs. Schumaker
joined in 1993. They
have been invaluable to the Foundation through their
service on various
Koch-Schumaker
committees. We
sincerely thank them
for their many years
of faithful service
to the Springfield
Foundation. In their
place, we welcome
Mr. Steve Neely and
Mr. Rob Rue as new
Board Trustees.
Mr. Steve Neely
is
the
President of
Geil
Armoloy of Ohio
located in Springfield, Ohio. He graduated
from Wittenberg University in 1975 and
began his career by teaching for five years
in the Springfield City Schools. He is a
member of Covenant Presbyterian Church
and has served on numerous boards in Clark
County such as the Community Healthcare Foundation, Clark State Foundation,
Springfield Arts Council and the Wittenberg
Alumni Association, to name a few. He is
married to Mary Alice Neely and they have
three children, Katie, Matt (wife, Melissa)
and Chris.
Mr. Rob Rue is the Owner/Funeral
Director of Littleton & Rue Funeral Home
and Crematory located in Springfield,
Ohio. He graduated in 1988 from Springfield North High School and is a graduate
of Heidelberg College and the Cincinnati
College of Mortuary Science. Rob is a
member of Zion Christian Fellowship in
Powell, Ohio, and has an Associate of Arts
in Practical Ministry from the F.I.R.E. School
of Ministry. He is the Past Chairman of the
Board of Trustees of the Nehemiah Foundation and in 2009, he founded on behalf of
Littleton and Rue a community awareness
program called “Live Now – Promoting an
Active Lifestyle.” He is married to Jenny Rue
and they have four children, Zach, Lydia,
Brock and Rachel Hannah.
We welcome them to the Board of Trustees of the Springfield Foundation.
Rafinski First Awardee
We salute Karen Rafinski for being the first awardee of the Extraordinary Woman of Clark County, held in May, 2013, at the Hollenbeck Bayley conference center in Springfield, Ohio. As Karen enters
retirement from a stellar career as the presidency of Clark State
Community College, we salute her for her tireless efforts on behalf
of students and the community at large. Congratulations, Karen!

Dear Patty, I see in the obituary section
of the newspaper sometimes that a family asks for gifts to a local charity either
in lieu of flowers or even in addition
to flowers. I am interested in telling my
family to do that for me when I pass
away but we are not millionaires. Is this
out of the reach for an ordinary person
like myself? Signed, “Not That Old Yet,
But Like to Have Things Planned Out.“
Dear Planner, First, I want to commend
you on making your estate plan for the
future. Having your preplanning completed
is a thoughtful legacy to your family.
It’s easy to direct gifts to the Springfield
Foundation’s General Fund or even to a
specific fund. The request is included in the
obituary that is put together with the assistance of the funeral home with whom you
are working. We check the obituaries daily
in our office to make sure we are apprised
of any directives that have been stated so
we can follow the deceased’s intent for the
gifts exactly. It is helpful to have the funeral
home or one of your family members give
us a quick call, just to give us a heads up
and to provide us with a family member’s
contact information. Then, if we receive
any gifts in memory of your life, we can let
them know in case they want to send out
their own thank you’s on the family’s behalf.
Here at the Foundation, when we get the
donation, we immediately send out an IRS
deductible receipt and a thank you, many
times within forty-eight hours.
No need to be a millionaire to direct
gifts to the Foundation. The Springfield
Foundation is here to promote philanthropy
for all in this region and we take our role
very seriously. If you have any other questions, feel free to call me at 324-8773, and
we can discuss all of the options open to
you including opening a new fund at the
Foundation through your estate plan.

John Eldon Bowman Unrestricted Fund
was formed upon the death of Mr. Bowman
with the proceeds to be used for the Unrestricted use of the Springfield Foundation.
These funds will be used for the general
charitable purposes as deemed appropriate
by the governing body.
The Phillip Kepple Unrestricted Fund
was formed upon the death of Mr. Bowman
with the proceeds to be used for the Unrestricted use of the Springfield Foundation.

Kaffenbarger Truck Equipment Company Northwestern Scholarship Fund
was formed by owner, Larry Kaffenbarger, to
benefit students who graduated from Northwestern High School with a preference for
those students who are majoring in engineering or business.
The Pearl Endowment Fund was created
by an anonymous donor to provide financial
support to individuals who have dedicated
their lives to Christian service and may be
experiencing either financial or emotional
distress.
The Springfield Arts Festival Fund was
created by the Summer Arts Council to support the ever popular annual Summer Arts
Festival for now and in the future.
Catholic Charities of Southwestern
Ohio Endowment Fund was created at
the Springfield Foundation to enable donors
to contribute to support the future efforts
of all of the programs offered through the
organization.
Second Harvest Foodbank Endowment
Fund was created to support the services
offered by the Second Harvest FoodBank
which is a program administered by the
Catholic Charities of Southwestern Ohio
organization.
